Impact of politeness and performance quality of android robots on future interaction decisions: a conversational design perspective

Despite robots being applied in various situations of modern society, some people avoid them or do not feel comfortable interacting with them. Designs that allow robots to interact appropriately with people will make a positive impression on them resulting in a better evaluation of robots, which will solve this problem. To establish such a design, this study conducted two scenario-based experiments focusing on the politeness of the robot's conversation and behavior, and examined the impressions caused when the robot succeeds or slightly fails at a task. These two experiments revealed that regardless of whether the partner is a robot or a human, politeness not only affected the impression of interaction but also the expectations for better task results on the next occasion. Although the effect of politeness on preference toward robot agents was smaller than those toward human agents when agents failed a task, people were more likely to interact with polite robots and human agents again because they thought that they would not fail the next time. This study revealed that politeness motivates people to interact with robots repeatedly even if they make minor mistakes, suggesting that the politeness design is important for encouraging human-robot interaction.

A Literature Review on Safety Perception and Trust during Human-Robot Interaction with Autonomous Mobile Robots That Apply to Industrial Environments

Occupational ApplicationsAutonomous mobile robots are used in manufacturing and warehousing industries, to transport material across the facility and deliver parts to work cells. Human workers might encounter or interact with these robots in aisle ways or at their workstation. It is important to consider factors that impact worker safety and trust when implementing autonomous mobile robots in the workplace. This paper reviews prior research that aims to improve the safety of human-robot interaction with autonomous mobile robots and identifies needs for future research. Researchers used a variety of questionnaires and behavioral assessment methods to measure perceived safety. Factors such as robot appearance, approach speed, and approach direction, significantly affect perceived safety. Additionally, projection of signals on the floor, turn signals, and haptic communication devices, can improve the predictability and overall safety of robot navigation.

Is Politeness Better than Impoliteness? Comparisons of Robot's Encouragement Effects Toward Performance, Moods, and Propagation

This study experimentally compared the effects of encouragement with polite/ impolite attitudes from a robot in a monotonous task from three viewpoints: performance, mood, and propagation. Experiment I investigated encouragement effects on performance and mood. The participants did a monotonous task during which a robot continuously provided polite, neutral, or impolite encouragement. Our experiment results showed that polite and impolite encouragement significantly improved performance more than neutral comments, although there was no significant difference between polite and impolite encouragement. In addition, impolite encouragement caused significantly more negative moods than polite encouragement. Experiment II determined whether the robot's encouragement influenced the participants' encouragement styles. The participants behaved similarly to the robot in Experiment I, i.e., they selected polite, neutral, and impolite encouragements by observing the progress of a monotonous task by a dummy participant. The experiment results, which showed that the robot's encouragement significantly influenced the participants' encouragement styles, suggest that polite encouragement is more advantageous than impolite encouragement.

Human–Robot Interaction in Industrial Settings: Perception of Multiple Participants at a Crossroad Intersection Scenario with Different Courtesy Cues

In environments shared with humans, Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) should be designed with human-aware motion-planning skills. Even when AMRs can effectively avoid humans, only a handful of studies have evaluated the human perception of mobile robots. To establish appropriate non-verbal communication, robot movement should be legible and should consider the human element. In this paper, a study that evaluates humans’ perceptions of different AMR courtesy behaviors at industrial facilities, particularly at crossing areas, is presented. To evaluate the proposed kinesic courtesy cues, we proposed five tests (four proposed cues—stop, deceleration, retreating, and retreating and moving aside—and one control test) with a set of participants taken two by two. We assessed three different metrics, namely, the participants’ self-reported trust in AMR behavior, the legibility of the courtesy cues in the participants’ opinions, and the behavioral analysis of the participants related to each courtesy cue tested. The retreating courtesy cue, regarding the legibility of the AMR behavior, and the decelerate courtesy cue, regarding the behavioral analysis of the participants’ signs of hesitation, are better perceived from the forward view. The results obtained regarding the participants’ self-reported trust showed no significant differences in the two participant perspectives.
