Abstract
New technologies such as multitouch-multiuser tabletops (MMT) and virtual reality (VR) provide modern neurorehabilitation options. The aim was to describe the structure of acquired social communication deficits in children with neurological disorders (ND) and implement a new PowerVR method- combined MMT/VR interfaces, into social neurorehabilitation. The study was designed based on the Structured Social Rehabilitation Model. Sixty children with ND aged 8-13 years participated: 28 with epilepsy, 10 with traumatic brain injury (TBI), 3 with tic disorders, 3 with stroke, 16 with other ND. A total of 16 patients (M = 10.5 years, SD = 1.8) completed trainings with pre- and post-intervention assessments. Forty-four patients participated in base-level assessment (M = 10.2 years, SD = 1.6). Two age-matched patients practiced in pairs on MMT and individually in VR. The most impaired components in patients were theory of mind (ToM) skills. A total of 64% of children presented behavioral problems related to executive dysfunctions. Patients lacked conflict resolution (median 38% out of 100%) and empathy skills (25%). After trainings, communication and cooperation, pragmatics, social attention, conflict resolution, and empathy skills improved. Patients' general verbal ToM and understanding false beliefs (p < .005) increased. Children's ability to start conversations improved; they experienced less bullying. Findings suggest that the combined technology-based intervention PowerVR offers increased power for multicomponent training of socio-emotional skills.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Substance abuse negatively affects the youth who use substances, their families and especially their parents. The use of substances impairs the health of the youth and is linked to an increase in noncommunicable diseases. Parents become stressed and they need help. Parents fail to carry out daily plans and routines because they are not sure what the substance abuser can do or what can happen to the substance abuser. When the parents' well-being is taken care of, they will be able to take care of their youth when they need help. Unfortunately, little is known about the psychosocial needs of the parents, especially when their child abuses substances. OBJECTIVES This article aims to review the literature to explore the need for support for parents of youth abusing substances. METHOD The study adopted the narrative literature review (NLR) methodology. Literature was retrieved from the following databases and search engines: electronic databases, search engines and hand searches. RESULTS Substance abuse has been found to affect the youth abusing substances and their families negatively. The parents, being the most affected, need support. The involvement of health professionals can assist the parents in feeling supported. CONCLUSION Parents need support programmes that will give support and strength to their existing abilities.Contribution: Focusing on the support needs of the parents of youth abusing substances will help to ensure parents are supported and mentally healthy.

Abstract
Children and adolescents who survive the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) with an acquired brain injury (ABI) often demonstrate a variety of physical, cognitive, emotional/behavioral, and social sequelae termed post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). Social communication and interaction challenges have also been observed clinically, and there is growing literature documenting these occurrences in youth following ABI. The extent of these social changes varies among patients, and a subset of patients go on to exhibit social and behavioral profiles closely resembling those of autistic youth. We reviewed empirical research regarding social functioning in youth following ABI, as well as the overlap between individuals with ABI and autistic youth, published from January 2009 to August 2022 on PubMed and Scopus databases. Clinical case examples from a well-established post-PICU follow-up program are also provided to exemplify the complexity of this phenomenon.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A significant minority of adolescents will have persistent postconcussion symptoms after an injury, potentially having a negative impact on family functioning. However, the reasons for a family's negative impact are not clearly understood. The objective of this study was to determine whether preinjury/demographic factors, injury characteristics, and/or worse postinjury symptoms are associated with higher levels of family stress in youth with refractory postconcussion symptoms. SETTING Pediatric refractory concussion clinic in a tertiary care center. PARTICIPANTS A total of 121 adolescents (13-18 years old) who were 1 to 12 months postconcussion. MEASURES Primary outcome was the mean stress rating on the Family Burden of Injury Interview (FBII), a 27-item questionnaire rating the impact on a family as a result of an injury. Preinjury/demographic and injury details were collected. Youth and their parents also completed measures of postconcussion symptoms, depression, anxiety, and behavioral problems. RESULTS Participants had a mean age of 16.0 years (SD = 1.3), of which, 65% identified as female, and were on an average 5.2 months (SD = 2.4) postconcussion. FBII ratings were not significantly correlated with demographics, preinjury functioning, injury severity, duration of persistent postconcussion problems (ie, time since injury), or self-reported postconcussion symptoms. Greater family burden (higher FBII ratings) significantly correlated with worse parent-reported postconcussion symptoms, worse psychological functioning (self-reported depression, parent-reported anxiety, and depression), and worse behavioral functioning (parent-reported conduct problems and peer problems). A multiple linear regression model revealed that parent-perceived postconcussion cognitive symptoms (β = .292, t = 2.56, P = .012) and parent-perceived peer problems (β = .263, t = 2.59, P = .011) were significantly associated with family burden ( F8,105 = 6.53; P < .001; R2 = 0.35). CONCLUSION Families of youth with refractory postconcussion symptoms can experience a negative impact. The severity of reported family burden in those with slow recovery from concussion was significantly associated with parents' perception of their child's cognitive symptoms and peer problems. These results could provide support for family-based interventions in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite increasing evidence of a link between early life brain injury and anti-social behavior, very few studies have assessed factors that explain this association in children with traumatic brain injury (TBI). One hypothesis suggests that childhood TBI elevates risk for anti-social behavior via disruption to anatomically distributed neural networks implicated in executive functioning (EF). In this longitudinal prospective study, we employed high-resolution structural neuroimaging to (a) evaluate the impact of childhood TBI on regional morphometry of the central executive network (CEN) and (b) evaluate the prediction that lower EF mediates the prospective relationship between structural differences within the CEN and postinjury anti-social behaviors. METHODS This study involved 155 children, including 112 consecutively recruited, hospital-confirmed cases of mild-severe TBI and 43 typically developing control (TDC) children. T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences were acquired sub-acutely in a subset of 137 children [TBI: n = 103; TDC: n = 34]. All participants were evaluated using direct assessment of EF 6 months postinjury, and parents provided ratings of anti-social behavior 12 months postinjury. RESULTS Severe TBI was associated with postinjury volumetric differences within the CEN and its putative hub regions. When compared with TD controls, the TBI group had significantly worse EF, which was associated with more frequent anti-social behaviors and abnormal CEN morphometry. Mediation analysis indicated that reduced EF mediated the prospective association between postinjury volumetric differences within the CEN and more frequent anti-social behavior. CONCLUSIONS Our longitudinal prospective findings suggest that detection of neurostructural abnormalities within the CEN may aid in the early identification of children at elevated risk for postinjury executive dysfunction, which may in turn contribute to chronic anti-social behaviors after early life brain injury. Findings underscore the potential value of early surveillance and preventive measures for children presenting with neurostructural and/or neurocognitive risk factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish whether poor parental supervision is associated with head injury and self-reported reactive aggression (ie, aggression in response to perceived provocation or threat) in adolescents in a Young Offender's Institute, by examining correlations between these variables. Understanding this population is important, as they are at a key pivotal age for intervention to prevent lifelong reoffending. METHODS Ninety-six male participants aged 16 to 18 years were recruited from a UK Young Offender's Institute. Self-report measures of remembered parenting, reactive aggression, and head injury history were administered during individual interviews. RESULTS Seventy-four percent of participants reported having experienced a lifetime traumatic brain injury (TBI), and 46% of participants reported experiencing at least 1 TBI leading to a loss of consciousness (LOC). We found that poor parental supervision, length of LOC following TBI, and self-reported reactive aggression were all positively correlated. CONCLUSIONS Findings show that there are correlational relationships between poor parental supervision, length of LOC following lifetime TBI, and higher levels of self-reported reactive aggression. This suggests there may be pathways resulting from poor parental supervision leading to both TBI with LOC, and reactive aggression. We advocate for future research with longitudinal designs and larger samples to examine the nature of these interactions, and to establish whether poor parental supervision is a prospective risk factor for more TBIs leading to LOC, and reactive aggression. This is key to understanding whether parenting interventions could help to reduce the disabling effects of TBI in adolescents, and help to prevent contact with the law.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine whether adolescents with persistent postconcussion symptoms (PPCS) differ from healthy peers in their personality traits and social supports. SETTING Specialty Concussion Clinic and Primary Care Clinic affiliated with an academic medical center. PARTICIPANTS Ninety-seven adolescents (42 with PPCS, 55 healthy peers; age: 15 ± 2 years). DESIGN Participants completed a web-based survey that included medical and demographic characteristics, mechanisms of concussion, 10-item Big Five Inventory, and Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale. A Student's 2-tailed t test with multiple testing corrections was used to compare the youths with PPCS to healthy peers. MAIN MEASURES The primary outcome was PPCS, defined by the presence of 2 or more concussion-related symptoms on the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS), lasting for more than 4 weeks after initial injury. The secondary outcome was perceived personality traits and social support, based on the 10-item Big Five Inventory and the Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale, respectively. RESULTS The PPCS group had higher neuroticism scores on their Big Five Inventory than healthy peers. They also reported less social support from teachers and classmates than healthy peers. CONCLUSION Youths with PPCS report specific personality and social support characteristics that differ from their peers. These findings suggest that individual personality and school-based social supports may influence concussion recovery.

Abstract
Although childhood traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been linked to heightened risk of impaired social skills and behavior, current evidence is weakened by small studies of variable methodological quality. To address these weaknesses, this international multi-cohort study involved synthesis of data from two large observational cohort studies of complicated mild-severe child TBI in Australia and North America. Both studies adopted a unified approach to data collection and coding procedures, providing the opportunity to merge datasets from multiple, well-characterized cohorts for which gold standard measures of social outcomes were collected during the chronic recovery phase. The study involved 218 children, including 33 children with severe TBI, 83 children with complicated mild-moderate TBI, 59 children with orthopedic injury, and 43 age- and sex-matched typically developing control children. All injured children were recruited from academic children's hospitals and underwent direct cognitive assessments including measures of theory of mind (ToM) at least 1-year post- injury. Parents rated their child's social adjustment using standardized measures of social skills, communication and behavior. Results showed a brain-injury specific effect on ToM abilities, such that children with both complicated mild to moderate and severe TBI displayed significantly poorer ToM than children without TBI. In mediator models, poorer ToM predicted poorer parent-rated self-direction and social skills, as well as more frequent behavioral symptoms. The ToM mediated the effect of severe TBI on parent ratings of communication and social skills, as well as on overall behavior symptoms. The findings suggest that deficits in ToM are evident across the spectrum of TBI severity and represent one mechanism linking severe child TBI to long-term social adjustment difficulties. The findings underscore the value of large-scale data harmonization projects to increase the quality of evidence regarding the outcomes of TBI. Clinical and scientific implications are discussed.

Abstract
Childhood traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects over 600 000 children per year in the United States. Following TBI, children are vulnerable to deficits in psychosocial adjustment and neurocognition, including social cognition, which persist long-term. They are also susceptible to direct and secondary damage to related brain networks. In this study, we examine whether brain morphometry of the mentalizing network (MN) and theory of mind (ToM; one component of social cognition) mediates the effects of TBI on adjustment. Children with severe TBI (n = 15, Mage = 10.32), complicated mild/moderate TBI (n = 30, Mage = 10.81) and orthopedic injury (OI; n = 42, Mage = 10.65) completed measures of ToM and executive function and underwent MRI; parents rated children’s psychosocial adjustment. Children with severe TBI demonstrated reduced right-hemisphere MN volume, and poorer ToM, vs children with OI. Ordinary least-squares path analysis indicated that right-hemisphere MN volume and ToM mediated the association between severe TBI and adjustment. Parallel analyses substituting the central executive network and executive function were not significant, suggesting some model specificity. Children at greatest risk of poor adjustment after TBI could be identified based in part on neuroimaging of social brain networks and assessment of social cognition and thereby more effectively allocate limited intervention resources.

Theory of Mind and Parental Nurturance as Predictors of Peer Relationships After Childhood Traumatic Brain Injury: A Test of Moderated Mediation. J Int Neuropsychol Soc 2019; 25:931-940. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Traumatic brain injury (TBI) sustained in childhood is associated with poor social outcomes. This study investigated the role of theory of mind (ToM) as a mediator of the relation between TBI and peer rejection/victimization and reciprocated friendships, as well as the moderating effect of parental nurturance on those relationships. METHOD Participants were children of 8-13 years old (M = 10.45, SD = 1.47), including 13 with severe TBI, 39 with complicated mild/moderate TBI, and 32 children with orthopedic injuries. Data on peer rejection/victimization and friendship were collected in school classrooms using the Extended Class Play and friendship nominations. Parents rated parental nurturance using the Child-Rearing Practices Report. Finally, ToM was measured based on children's average performance across three tasks measuring different aspects of ToM. RESULTS Severe TBI was associated with poorer ToM, greater peer rejection/victimization, and fewer reciprocated friendships. ToM mediated the relation between severe TBI and peer rejection/victimization (i.e., severe TBI predicted poorer ToM, which in turn predicted greater rejection/victimization). Parental nurturance significantly moderated this relation, such that the mediating effect of ToM was significant only at low and average levels of parental nurturance, for both severe and complicated mild/moderate TBI groups. Neither the mediating effect of ToM nor the moderating effect of parental nurturance was significant for reciprocated friendships. CONCLUSION High parental nurturance may mitigate the negative effects of ToM deficits on risk of peer rejection/victimization among children with TBI. Interventions designed to increase parental nurturance or ToM may promote better social outcomes among children with TBI.

Abstract
People living in vulnerable environments face a harder set of challenges adapting to their context. Nevertheless, an important number of them adapt successfully. However, which cognitive and socio-affective variables are specifically related to these variations in social adaptation in vulnerable contexts has not been fully understood nor directly addressed. Here we evaluated socio-affective variables (anxious attachment style, internal locus of control, self-esteem and stress) and cognitive variables (fluid intelligence, crystallized intelligence, working memory, numeracy, probabilistic reasoning and logical reasoning) to explain variations in social adaptation in a sample of 232 adults living in vulnerable contexts (M = 42.3, SD = 14.9, equal amount of men and women). Our results show that an important amount of variance in social adaptation can be explained by socio-affective variables, principally by self-esteem, while cognitive variables also contributed significantly. As far as we know, this is one of the first steps towards understanding the role of cognitive and socio-affective features on social adaptation. In the long run, this area of research could play an important role on the assignation of resources to ease people’s integration into society. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Children with acquired brain injury (ABI) can present with disruptive behavior, which is often a consequence of injury and parent factors. Parent factors are associated with child disruptive behavior. Furthermore, disinhibition in the child also leads to disruptive behavior. However, it is unclear how these factors interact. We investigated whether parental factors influence child disruptive behavior following ABI and how these factors interact. METHODS Parents of 77 children with ABI participated in the study. Parent factors (executive dysfunction, trait-anxiety), potential intervention targets (dysfunctional parenting practices, parental stress, child disinhibition), and child disruptive behavior were assessed. A hypothetical model based on the literature was tested using mediation and path analysis. RESULTS Mediation analysis revealed that child disinhibition and dysfunctional parenting practices mediated the association of parent factors and child disruptive behavior. Parents' executive dysfunction mediated the association of dysfunctional parenting practices, parental stress and parent trait-anxiety. Parenting practices mediated the association of executive dysfunction and child disruptive behavior. Path analysis indices indicated good model adjustment. Comparative and Tucker-Lewis Index were >0.95, and the root mean square error of approximation was 0.059, with a chi-square of 0.25. CONCLUSIONS A low level of parental trait-anxiety may be required to reduce dysfunctional parenting practices and child disinhibition. Impairments in child disinhibition can be exacerbated when parents present with high trait-anxiety. Child disinhibition is the major contributor of disruptive behavior reported by parents and teachers. The current study provides evidence of parent anxiety and child disinhibition as possible modifiable intervention targets for reducing child disruptive behavior. (JINS, 2019, 25, 237-248).
