Graphene oxide-sulfated lanthanum oxy-carbonate nanocomposite as an adsorbent for the removal of malachite green from water samples with application of statistical optimization and machine learning computations

A comprehensive study for the potential removal of 152+154Eu radionuclides using a promising modified strontium-based MOF

A facile modification of a strontium-based MOF using oxalic acid was carried out to prepare MTSr-OX MOF, which was used as a potential substance for eliminating 152+154Eu radioisotopes. Various analytical techniques were used to characterize MTSr-OX-MOF. The prepared MOF had a rod-like structure with a BET surface area of 101.55 m2 g-1. Batch sorption experiments were used to investigate the sorption performance of MTSr-OX-MOF towards 152+154Eu radionuclides where different parameters like pH, contact time, initial 152+154Eu concentration, ionic strength, and temperature were scrutinized to determine the optimum conditions for 152+154Eu removal. MTSr-OX-MOF showed superior effectiveness in the elimination of 152+154Eu with a maximum sorption capacity of 234.72 mg g-1 at pH 3.5. Kinetics fitted with the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model correctly described the sorption mechanism. The thermodynamic variables were carefully examined, demonstrating that the 152+154Eu sorption was endothermic as well as spontaneous. The MTSr-OX-MOF has been found to be a significantly more effective sorbent towards 152+154Eu than that of many other adsorbents. When applied to real active waste, MTSr-OX-MOF demonstrated excellent removal performance for a wide range of radionuclides. As a result, the MTSr-OX-MOF can be recognized as an attractive solution for the 152+154Eu purification from active waste.

Graphene-based materials for effective adsorption of organic and inorganic pollutants: A critical and comprehensive review

Water scarcity has been felt in many countries and will become a critical issue in the coming years. The release of toxic organic and inorganic contaminants from different anthropogenic activities, like mining, agriculture, industries, and domestic households, enters the natural waterbody and pollutes them. Keeping this in view in combating the environmental crises, removing pollutants from wastewater is one of the ongoing environmental challenges. Adsorption technology is an economical, fast, and efficient physicochemical method for removing both organic and inorganic pollutants, even at low concentrations. In the last decade, graphene and its composite materials have become the center of attraction for numerous applications, including wastewater treatment, due to the large surface area, highly active surface, and exclusive physicochemical properties, which make them potential adsorbents with unique physicochemical properties, like low density, chemical strength, structural variability, and the possibility of large-scale fabrications. This review article provides a thorough summary/critical appraisal of the published literature on graphene-, GO-, and rGO-based adsorbents for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater. The synthesis methods, experimental parameters, adsorption behaviors, isotherms, kinetics, thermodynamics, mechanisms, and the performance of the regeneration-desorption processes of these substances are scrutinized. Finally, the research challenges, limitations, and future research studies are also discussed. Certainly, this review article will benefit the research community by getting substantial information on suitable techniques for synthesizing such adsorbents and utilizing them in water treatment and designing water treatment systems.

Novel Graphene oxide-Polyethylene Glycol mono-4-nonylphenyl Ether adsorbent for solid phase extraction of Pb2+ in blood and water samples

A novel and efficient Graphene Oxide-Polyethylene Glycol mono-4-nonylphenyl Ether (GO-PEGPE) nanocomposite was synthesized and used for solid phase extraction of trace levels of Pb²⁺ in different water and blood samples. The synthesized adsorbent was then characterized by the Fourier Transform-Infrared spectrophotometry (FT-IR), Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). To optimize the critical parameters including pH of samples solution, amounts of adsorbent and extraction time, the response surface methodology based on the central composite design (RSM-CCD) was used and based on the results, pH = 6.0, extraction time = 22 min and amounts of adsorbent = 15 mg were selected as the optimum conditions. The relative standard deviation based on seven replicate analysis of 2 µg L^-1 Pb²⁺ was 5.2% and the limit of detection was 0.023 µg L^-1 (n = 8). The results of adsorption isotherm investigation show that the adsorption of Pb²⁺ onto the GO-PEGPE nanocomposite obeyed by the Langmuir isotherm with the maximum adsorption capacity of 69.44 mg g^-1. Also, based on the Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich (DR) isotherms, the adsorption of Pb²⁺ onto the GO-PEGPE nanocomposite is a physisorption phenomenon and the consequences of the kinetic models illustrated that the adsorption of Pb²⁺ followed by the pseudo second order adsorption kinetic model. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied for preconcentration of Pb²⁺ in different water and blood samples of turning industry workers.
