Effectiveness of (Active) Lifestyle Interventions in People With a Lower Limb Amputation: A Systematic Review

Appraising the Physical Activity Levels of Saudis with Physical Disabilities: Effects of Disability Type, Mobility Assistive Devices, and Demographic Factors

Physical activity (PA) has numerous health benefits for individuals with physical disabilities (IWPD). However, it is common for activity levels to fall below the suggested limits. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, pattern, and levels of PA among IWPD in Saudi Arabia. It also investigated the effects of individuals' type of disability, mobility assistive devices, and demographic features on PA levels. Data were collected from 238 participants, mostly male (62.2%), aged 39.76 ± 12.19 years. Among them, 19.3% had spinal conditions, 14.7% had progressive muscular dystrophy, 15.1% had multiple sclerosis, 17.6% had cerebral palsy, 16.4% had poliomyelitis, and 16.8% had limb or foot amputations. The participants were assessed using the Arabic version of the Physical Activity Scale for Individuals with Physical Disabilities (PASIPD-AR). The results showed that 62.6% (64.9% of males and 58.9% of females) met the minimum PA guidelines specified by the WHO. The average PASIPD-AR score was 10.33 ± 10.67 MET-hours/day, indicating lower PA levels, and 8.4% of individuals did not participate in any form of PA. Significant discrepancies were detected in disability type and mobility assistive device use after age adjustment. Marital status, education, and occupation greatly affected PA components. Greater attention should be paid to promoting an active lifestyle among IWPD in Saudi Arabia.

Rehabilitation Following Above-Knee Amputation in a Pediatric Osteosarcoma Patient: A Case Report

The earliest stages of osteosarcomas are primitive mesenchymal cells. It generally occurs close to the long bones' metaphysis and typically affects the long bones, such as the arm and leg. This case report underscores the pivotal role of physiotherapy in the rehabilitation of a 14-year-old male diagnosed with osteosarcoma, who underwent above-knee amputation. The structured six-week rehabilitation program, encompassing passive, active-assisted, and active exercises for the affected limb, alongside strength training for unaffected joints, produced notable gains in the pain rating scale and the lower-extremity functional scale in just 15 days. These outcomes underscore the significance of early and targeted physiotherapy interventions in optimizing functional outcomes and quality of life for young patients with osteosarcoma after surgery.

Effects of Virtual Reality on Transtibial Amputation Rehabilitation Outcomes: A Randomized Study

Purpose: Virtual reality is widely used in patients with chronic musculoskeletal problems. However, the short-term effects on individuals with transtibial (TT) amputation during this process remain unclear. This study aimed at investigating the effects of virtual reality on rehabilitation outcomes in TT amputees. Methods: The study included 20 TT amputees who were using TT prostheses. The participants were divided into two groups randomly as follows: physiotherapy (PT) and virtual reality (VR). Participants were treated 3 days a week, for 4 weeks, and evaluations were made before and after treatment; a 6-minute walk test was used for performance, a single-leg balance test for balance, Trinity Amputation Prosthesis Experience Scale for prosthesis satisfaction, a 10-meter walking test for gait speed, and a wearable smart t-shirt to determine cadence. Results: It was found that there was a statistically significant difference in performance, balance, prosthesis satisfaction, cadence, and gait speed before and after PT (P < 0.05). There were differences in terms of performance, prosthesis satisfaction, balance, cadence, and gait speed before and after VR (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between PT and VR (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The 4 weeks of VR training improved performance, prosthesis satisfaction, balance, cadence, and gait speed in TT amputation rehabilitation similar to physiotherapy methods. The addition of VR training to amputation rehabilitation will bring improvements since it is a fun and safe intervention.
