Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the landscape of osteoarthritis (OA) biomarker research through the citation analysis of top-cited articles, identifying trends and gaps in this field. METHODS The Web of Science Core Collection was utilized to retrieve the top 50 cited articles on OA biomarkers. Data extraction included publication characteristics, citation metrics, and biomarker categorization. Statistical analyses were conducted to discern correlations and assess significance. RESULTS The top 50 cited articles spanned the years 1999 to 2020, and collectively cited 4849 articles, accumulating a total of 6177 citations, resulting in an average of 123.5 citations per document. Citations per article varied between 78 and 359, with a citation density ranging from 3.9 to 23.93. Analysis of the top 50 cited articles revealed comparable impact between recent and older publications. Predominant trends included cartilage-related and blood-based biomarkers, while inflammation-related, radiomics, and multi-omics emerged as potential future research directions. In BIPEDS classification, gaps were identified in biomarkers evaluating intervention efficacy and safety. CONCLUSION Despite significant advancements, there is no universally acknowledged biomarker for OA. Addressing gaps in biomarker exploration is crucial for enhancing OA management strategies. This study provides insights into prevailing trends and future research directions in OA biomarkers, guiding future investigations and therapeutic development.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyze the bibliometric characteristics of the top 50 cited articles in elbow arthroscopy. METHODS The Web of Science Core Collection was employed to systematically retrieve publications related to elbow arthroscopy. Subsequently, the top 50 cited articles meeting the predefined inclusion criteria were meticulously documented and subjected to comprehensive bibliometric analysis. RESULTS The top 50 cited articles spanned the years 1999-2017, with the 2010s emerging as the most prolific decade. Citations per article varied from 24 to 211, and citation density ranged from 1.61 to 9.17. The United States dominated in article production and citations. Predominantly, the articles took the form of case series and expert opinions, with a notable absence of level I or II evidence. The keywords with the highest frequencies were "arthrofibrosis," "complications," and "release." These keywords formed five main clusters: stiff elbow, osteoarthritis, osteochondritis dissecans, and lateral epicondylitis. CONCLUSIONS The majority of the top 50 cited articles in elbow arthroscopy comprised case series exhibiting Level IV or V evidence. Despite a dynamic development post-2010, elbow arthroscopy articles showed lower mean citations and citation density compared to other joints, potentially influenced by concerns about complications. However, with the increasing prevalence of elbow arthroscopy procedures, it is anticipated that higher-level articles, particularly those focusing on complications and exploring additional indications, will supersede some of the articles included in this analysis. Abstract
Background Humeral fractures (HF) are common orthopedic pathologies. Reviewing the content and quality of influential literature over time is important to advance scientific research regarding a specific topic. This study aims to explore and appraise the fifty most cited HF studies that had been published in orthopedic literature. Methods The Web of Science database was used to conduct a systematic search for articles pertaining to HF. Articles were sorted out in descending order of citations and were included based on their relevance to HF. Data and metrics of the included studies were recorded. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the Modified Coleman Methodology Score (MCMS) and the Methodological Index for Non-randomized Studies criteria. Statistical analysis was conducted to explore any significant relationships between the date of publication and other relevant variables. Results Included articles (N = 50) were published between 1959 and 2015, with a total of 14,864 accumulated citations. Europe and North America contributed to all but one of the included studies. The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery contributed to the highest number of included articles with 27 articles (54%). The proximal humerus was the most commonly explored HF location in our study (72%). The average MCMS and Methodological Index for Non-randomized Studies scores were reported to be 64.6 and 10.4, respectively, and the majority of articles (52%) were considered level four case series. Year of publication was found to have a positive correlation with increasing level of evidence(r = -0.301, P = .044), citation density (r = 0.734, P < .001), and MCMS score (r = 0.41, P = .01). Conclusion The level of evidence, MCMS scores, and citation density of influential HF literature has been increasing with time, reflecting the increasing effort and work being put in that field. While the findings seem encouraging, additional high-quality research is needed to help achieve better treatment strategies and outcomes.

Abstract
Background With the burgeoning advancements in disease modeling, drug development, and precision medicine, organ-on-a-chip has risen to the forefront of biomedical research. Specifically in tumor research, this technology has exhibited exceptional potential in elucidating the dynamics of metastasis within the tumor microenvironment. Recognizing the significance of this field, our study aims to provide a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of global scientific contributions related to organ-on-a-chip. Methods Publications pertaining to organ-on-a-chip from 2014 to 2023 were retrieved at the Web of Science Core Collection database. Rigorous analyses of 2305 articles were conducted using tools including VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R-bibliometrix. Results Over the 10-year span, global publications exhibited a consistent uptrend, anticipating continued growth. The United States and China were identified as dominant contributors, characterized by strong collaborative networks and substantial research investments. Predominant institutions encompass Harvard University, MIT, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Leading figures in the domain, such as Dr. Donald Ingber and Dr. Yu Shrike Zhang, emerge as pivotal collaboration prospects. Lab on a Chip, Micromachines, and Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology were the principal publishing journals. Pertinent keywords encompassed Microfluidic, Microphysiological System, Tissue Engineering, Organoid, In Vitro, Drug Screening, Hydrogel, Tumor Microenvironment, and Bioprinting. Emerging research avenues were identified as "Tumor Microenvironment and Metastasis," "Application of organ-on-a-chip in drug discovery and testing" and "Advancements in personalized medicine applications". Conclusion The organ-on-a-chip domain has demonstrated a transformative impact on understanding disease mechanisms and drug interactions, particularly within the tumor microenvironment. This bibliometric analysis underscores the ever-increasing importance of this field, guiding researchers and clinicians towards potential collaborative avenues and research directions.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify and assess the clinical impact of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the surgical management of femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) through a citation analysis. METHODS MEDLINE, EMBASE and CENTRAL were searched from inception to April 22, 2023 for RCTs assessing the surgical management of FAIS. Study characteristics were directly abstracted from included trials and citation metrics were obtained from the Clarivate Web of Knowledge database on May 19, 2023. The continuous fragility index (CFI) was calculated for eligible outcomes. Univariate regression models were used to explore correlations between total citations per year and various study characteristics. RESULTS Ten studies comprising one thousand two hundred ninetypatients were eligible for analysis. Studies were published from 2013 to 2023. Eight countries were represented across various trials with 91% being either North American or European. The mean journal impact factor of published studies was 39.684 (median 2.982; range 1.31-202.73). The mean citation density was 14.17 (range 0.33-48.67). The median CFI was 4.8 (range 1-32.2). Correlation analysis demonstrated strong and statistically significant correlations to study sample size (R = 0.75, p = 0.012), journal impact factor (R = 0.80, p = 0.006) and continuous fragility index (R = 0.95, p = 0.015). CONCLUSION Trials assessing the surgical management of FAIS present with a wide range of clinical uptake based on citation density and are published in journals of broadly variable impact factor. Despite promising citation metrics, high-quality evidence on arthroscopy for FAIS is limited to the United States and Europe with an unclear international impact. Future knowledge translation efforts are warranted to maximise the international uptake of evidence regarding arthroscopic management of FAIS. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE I.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To analyze the 100 most cited articles (T100) on ocrelizumab using bibliometric methods to determine the current situation and identify research hotspots. METHODS Articles with "ocrelizumab" in their title were searched for in the Web of Science (WoS) database, identifying 900 articles. After the exclusion criteria were applied, 183 original articles and reviews were obtained. The T100 were selected from among these articles. Data on these articles (author, source, institution, country, scientific category, citation number, and citation density) were analyzed. RESULTS The number of articles showed a fluctuating upward trend from 2006 to 2022. The total number of citations for the T100 ranged from two to 923. The average number of citations per article was 45.11. The most articles were published in 2021 (n = 31). The "Ocrelizumab versus Placebo in Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis" study (T1) was the most cited article among the T100 and had the highest annual average number of citations. T1, T2, and T3 were clinical trials on treating multiple sclerosis. The USA was the most productive and influential research country, with 44 articles. Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders was the most productive journal (n = 22). Clinical neurology ranked first among the WoS categories (n = 70). Hauser Stephen and Kappos Ludwig were the most influential authors, with 10 articles each. Biotechnology company Roche was at the top of the publication list, with 36 articles. CONCLUSION This study's results can give researchers an idea about current developments and research collaborations on ocrelizumab. These data can help researchers easily obtain publications that have become classics. We conclude that the clinical and academic communities have shown a growing interest in ocrelizumab for treating primary progressive multiple sclerosis in recent years.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine a series of papers from top ranked orthopaedic journals with respect to the number of citations over a 10-year observation period to identify factors that lead to high citation rates. METHODS The Web of Science database was consulted to identify all published papers from the first-year term of 2010 (January-May) from four top orthopaedic journals: AJSM, Arthroscopy, JBJS Am and KSSTA. The database was used to analyze and compare the papers with respect to their characteristics and citations up to 2019. Basic information for each paper was collected including the author, country, study type and average citations per year (ACY). The most (Top20%) and least (Bottom20%) frequently cited papers were identified and differences were extracted. RESULTS Five hundred sixteen papers were included with a total of 19,261 citations. Most of the published papers were from the United States (n = 245). On average, a paper received 37.3 citations over the 10-year observation period. The most cited paper was cited 322 times. The most cited study type was randomized controlled trial (RCT) (Ø80.8). The Top20% papers were cited 37 times more often than the Bottom20%. Among the Top20%, the largest group was cohort study (n = 20) followed by case series (n = 19). Among others, the number of authors, the number of keywords and the number of references significantly correlated with the number of citations (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Factors influencing citation frequency were identified.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is an advanced tissue engineering technique that has received a lot of interest in the past years. We aimed to highlight the characteristics of articles on 3D bioprinting, especially in terms of research hotspots and focus. Publications related to 3D bioprinting from 2007 to 2022 were acquired from the Web of Science Core Collection database. We have used VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R-bibliometrix to perform various analyses on 3,327 published articles. The number of annual publications is increasing globally, a trend expected to continue. The United States and China were the most productive countries with the closest cooperation and the most research and development investment funds in this field. Harvard Medical School and Tsinghua University are the top-ranked institutions in the United States and China, respectively. Dr. Anthony Atala and Dr. Ali Khademhosseini, the most productive researchers in 3D bioprinting, may provide cooperation opportunities for interested researchers. Tissue Engineering Part A contributed the largest publication number, while Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology was the most attractive journal with the most potential. As for the keywords in 3D bioprinting, Bio-ink, Hydrogels (especially GelMA and Gelatin), Scaffold (especially decellularized extracellular matrix), extrusion-based bioprinting, tissue engineering, and in vitro models (organoids particularly) are research hotspots analyzed in the current study. Specifically, the research topics "new bio-ink investigation," "modification of extrusion-based bioprinting for cell viability and vascularization," "application of 3D bioprinting in organoids and in vitro model" and "research in personalized and regenerative medicine" were predicted to be hotspots for future research.

Abstract
Background: While database studies have become more prevalent in the literature, there is concern over their value. In addition, the questions they are suitable to answer are limited. Questions/Purposes: We sought to determine the incidence of database studies in the orthopedic literature and in each subspecialty. In addition, we wanted to assess the impact of database studies on the literature by determining whether citations and Altmetric Attention Scores (AAS) varied by study type (studies using internal or external databases and those not using databases). Methods: We searched PubMed for articles published in impactful orthopedic surgery journals in the year 2018. All articles were discoverable on the Altmetric explorer portal database. Impact was determined by journal impact factor. Study design, subspecialty, number of citations, and AAS were obtained. Univariable analyses were conducted between study type, demographic variables, and the outcome of either citation count or AAS. Multivariable analyses were performed to identify independent predictors of the primary outcomes. Subgroup analyses were performed to differentiate the impact of external and internal database studies compared with non-database studies. Results: A total of 2684 total articles were eligible for inclusion. Of these, 366 studies (13.6%) were database studies. Hip and knee articles had the greatest incidence of database studies. Database studies had significantly more citations (5.9 vs 4.0) and significantly higher AAS (12.8 vs 11.3) compared with non-database studies. External database studies had significantly more citations (6.7 vs 4.8) and significantly higher AAS (14.0 vs 10.7) than internal database studies. Internal database studies had higher traditional citation counts but similar AAS to non-database studies. Conclusions: In 2018, database studies in well-reputed orthopedic journals had a greater number of citations but similar AAS compared with non-database studies. Further studies are warranted.

Abstract
Study Design Bibliometric analysis. Objective Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a typical surgical method in spine surgery and has progressed significantly in the last several decades. The purpose of this study is to determine how the 100 most-cited original articles on ACDF have been the most influential in this field by identifying and analyzing them. Methods The articles on ACDF were identified by searching the Thomson ISI Web of Science database on 30 May 2022. The 100 most-cited articles were selected according to specific criteria. The data extracted from the articles included title, publication date, total citations, journal name, first author, institutions, and keywords. Results The total number of citations was 13,181, with a mean number of 131.81 ± 100.18. The publication dates ranged from 1994 to 2018. Most of these articles originated in the United States (68%) and were published in the 2000s (32%) and 2010s (48%). Spine published most of the articles (30%), followed by the Journal of Neurosurgery-Spine (16%), Spine Journal (14%), and European Spine Journal (13%). The most prolific author was Dr. Todd J Albert (n = 7), with 1,312 citations. The Texas Back Institute was the most productive institution (n = 10). The keywords ACDF, cervical spine, cervical spine, and fusion showed the highest degree of centrality. Conclusion One hundred top-cited articles on ACDF were identified and analyzed in this study. We demonstrate that ACDF is a growing and popular area of research, with the focus of research varying through timeline trends. This will provide a comprehensive and detailed basis for spine surgeons to make clinical decisions and assimilate the research focus of cervical spine surgery.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Latarjet is among the procedures indicated to treat shoulder instability, producing excellent results, including low instability rates and high patient satisfaction. The aim of this study was to report the characteristics of scientific articles that address the subject of the Latarjet procedure through the use of bibliometric analysis. Materials and Methods: Bibliographic searches were performed for original articles published in journals indexed by the Web of Science database until 2021, with no language restrictions. Results: A total of 668 articles published in 87 journals were included. The first publication was in 1981; the most registered publications were in 2018 and 2021 (89 articles), with an annual percentage growth rate of 11.9. Provencher MT was the author with the most published articles, and the institutional affiliation with the most original articles was the Steadman Philippon Research Institute. The most cited article was a study by Burkhart and Beer, and the scientific journal with the most publications on the subject was the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. Most published studies included keywords such as dislocation, instability, and meta-analysis. Conclusion: There has been a sustained increase in original articles on the Latarjet procedure. However, the greatest growth in articles has occurred during the last decade, demonstrating the considerable interest among the world scientific community.

Abstract
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has garnered widespread and increasing attention in recent years. We aimed to characterize the most influential articles in PRP research while clarifying controversies surrounding its use and clinical efficacy and identifying important areas on which to focus future research efforts. The Science Citation Index Expanded subsection of the Web of Science Core Collection was systematically searched to identify the top 50 cited publications on orthopedic PRP research. Publication and study characteristics were extracted, and Spearman's correlations were calculated to assess the relationship between citation data and level of evidence. The top 50 articles were published between the years 2005 and 2016, with 68% published in the year 2010 or later. Of the 33 studies for which level of evidence was assessed, the majority were of level I or II (18, 54.5%). Seventeen articles (34%) were classified as basic science. All clinical studies were prospective, and most (12 studies, 60%) included a high number of metrics related to the PRP preparation protocol and composition. Knee osteoarthritis was the most common topic among clinical studies in the top 50 cited articles (11 studies, 34%). More recent articles were associated with higher citation rates (ρ = 0.46, p < 0.001). The most influential articles on orthopaedic PRP research are recent and consist of high-level of evidence studies mostly. Randomized controlled trials were the most common study type, while basic science articles were relatively less common. The most influential clinical studies reported a high number of metrics related to their PRP preparation protocol and the final PRP composition. These results suggest a rapidly evolving field with the potential to better explain inconsistent clinical results with improved understanding and documentation of basic science concepts such as PRP composition, preparation, and combination techniques.

Abstract
Predicting future trends in arthroscopic and related surgery can be a challenging task for researchers, authors, editors, and clinicians alike. Analysis of high-citation articles from the past may guide future research. Cartilage had been the most highly cited topic in the arthroscopic literature, but the last 5 years has been overtaken by shoulder and rotator cuff. Following close behind is the hip arthroscopy literature, which is clearly moving up in the citation rankings. As highly cited "classic" articles become common knowledge, their overwhelming impact on citation will lessen, allowing the next generation of articles and topics to flourish. We may benefit from the analysis of arthroscopic topics in smaller time frames to predict future trends to give us a more up-to-date prediction of the future. The sweet spot may be somewhere between 5 to 10 years rather than since the inception of journal metrics to help predict where the literature is going. This is not to say that the classic articles aren't critically important, but they are just that, classic, and not necessarily predictive of the future.
