Innovative applications of artificial intelligence during the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges worldwide. Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies hold tremendous potential for tackling key aspects of pandemic management and response. In the present review, we discuss the tremendous possibilities of AI technology in addressing the global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. First, we outline the multiple impacts of the current pandemic on public health, the economy, and society. Next, we focus on the innovative applications of advanced AI technologies in key areas such as COVID-19 prediction, detection, control, and drug discovery for treatment. Specifically, AI-based predictive analytics models can use clinical, epidemiological, and omics data to forecast disease spread and patient outcomes. Additionally, deep neural networks enable rapid diagnosis through medical imaging. Intelligent systems can support risk assessment, decision-making, and social sensing, thereby improving epidemic control and public health policies. Furthermore, high-throughput virtual screening enables AI to accelerate the identification of therapeutic drug candidates and opportunities for drug repurposing. Finally, we discuss future research directions for AI technology in combating COVID-19, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. Though promising, barriers related to model generalization, data quality, infrastructure readiness, and ethical risks must be addressed to fully translate these innovations into real-world impacts. Multidisciplinary collaboration engaging diverse expertise and stakeholders is imperative for developing robust, responsible, and human-centered AI solutions against COVID-19 and future public health emergencies.

Stacked deep learning approach for efficient SARS-CoV-2 detection in blood samples

Identifying COVID-19 through blood sample analysis is crucial in managing the disease and improving patient outcomes. Despite its advantages, the current test demands certified laboratories, expensive equipment, trained personnel, and 3-4 h for results, with a notable false-negative rate of 15%-20%. This study proposes a stacked deep-learning approach for detecting COVID-19 in blood samples to distinguish uninfected individuals from those infected with the virus. Three stacked deep learning architectures, namely the StackMean, StackMax, and StackRF algorithms, are introduced to improve the detection quality of single deep learning models. To counter the class imbalance phenomenon in the training data, the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) algorithm is also implemented, resulting in increased specificity and sensitivity. The efficacy of the methods is assessed by utilizing blood samples obtained from hospitals in Brazil and Italy. Results revealed that the StackMax method greatly boosted the deep learning and traditional machine learning methods' capability to distinguish COVID-19-positive cases from normal cases, while SMOTE increased the specificity and sensitivity of the stacked models. Hypothesis testing is performed to determine if there is a significant statistical difference in the performance between the compared detection methods. Additionally, the significance of blood sample features in identifying COVID-19 is analyzed using the XGBoost (eXtreme Gradient Boosting) technique for feature importance identification. Overall, this methodology could potentially enhance the timely and precise identification of COVID-19 in blood samples.

Empowering elderly care with intelligent IoT-Driven smart toilets for home-based infectious health monitoring

The COVID-19 pandemic highlights the need for effective and non-intrusive methods to monitor the well-being of elderly individuals in their homes, especially for early detection of potential viral infections. Conspicuously, the present paper develops a Multi-scaled Long Short Term Memory (Ms-LSTM) model for the routine health monitoring of elderly patients to detect COVID-19. The proposed method offers home-based health diagnostics through urine analysis by leveraging the IoT-Fog-Cloud paradigm. Mainly, the proposed model constitutes a four-layered architecture: data acquisition, fog layer, cloud layer, and interface layer. Each layer serves distinct functionalities and provides specific services, thereby collectively enhancing the overall effectiveness of the model. The statistical results of the study demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed Ms-LSTM model in comparison to state-of-the-art methods, including Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), K-Nearest Neighbors (K-NN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest, and LSTM. Further, the proposed model attains a mean temporal efficiency of 39.23 seconds. It exhibits high reliability (92.97%), stability (70.06%), and predictive accuracy (93.25%).

Computer-aided methods for combating Covid-19 in prevention, detection, and service provision approaches

The infectious disease Covid-19 has been causing severe social, economic, and human suffering across the globe since 2019. The countries have utilized different strategies in the last few years to combat Covid-19 based on their capabilities, technological infrastructure, and investments. A massive epidemic like this cannot be controlled without an intelligent and automatic health care system. The first reaction to the disease outbreak was lockdown, and researchers focused more on developing methods to diagnose the disease and recognize its behavior. However, as the new lifestyle becomes more normalized, research has shifted to utilizing computer-aided methods to monitor, track, detect, and treat individuals and provide services to citizens. Thus, the Internet of things, based on fog-cloud computing, using artificial intelligence approaches such as machine learning, and deep learning are practical concepts. This article aims to survey computer-based approaches to combat Covid-19 based on prevention, detection, and service provision. Technically and statistically, this article analyzes current methods, categorizes them, presents a technical taxonomy, and explores future and open issues.

A hybrid random forest deep learning classifier empowered edge cloud architecture for COVID-19 and pneumonia detection

COVID-19 is a global pandemic that mostly affects patients' respiratory systems, and the only way to protect oneself against the virus at present moment is to diagnose the illness, isolate the patient, and provide immunization. In the present situation, the testing used to predict COVID-19 is inefficient and results in more false positives. This difficulty can be solved by developing a remote medical decision support system that detects illness using CT scans or X-ray images with less manual interaction and is less prone to errors. The state-of-art techniques mainly used complex deep learning architectures which are not quite effective when deployed in resource-constrained edge devices. To overcome this problem, a multi-objective Modified Heat Transfer Search (MOMHTS) optimized hybrid Random Forest Deep learning (HRFDL) classifier is proposed in this paper. The MOMHTS algorithm mainly optimizes the deep learning model in the HRFDL architecture by optimizing the hyperparameters associated with it to support the resource-constrained edge devices. To evaluate the efficiency of this technique, extensive experimentation is conducted on two real-time datasets namely the COVID19 lung CT scan dataset and the Chest X-ray images (Pneumonia) datasets. The proposed methodology mainly offers increased speed for communication between the IoT devices and COVID-19 detection via the MOMHTS optimized HRFDL classifier is modified to support the resources which can only support minimal computation and handle minimum storage. The proposed methodology offers an accuracy of 99% for both the COVID19 lung CT scan dataset and the Chest X-ray images (Pneumonia) datasets with minimal computational time, cost, and storage. Based on the simulation outcomes, we can conclude that the proposed methodology is an appropriate fit for edge computing detection to identify the COVID19 and pneumonia with higher detection accuracy.

Hybrid learning method based on feature clustering and scoring for enhanced COVID-19 breath analysis by an electronic nose

Breath pattern analysis based on an electronic nose (e-nose), which is a noninvasive, fast, and low-cost method, has been continuously used for detecting human diseases, including the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Nevertheless, having big data with several available features is not always beneficial because only a few of them will be relevant and useful to distinguish different breath samples (i.e., positive and negative COVID-19 samples). In this study, we develop a hybrid machine learning-based algorithm combining hierarchical agglomerative clustering analysis and permutation feature importance method to improve the data analysis of a portable e-nose for COVID-19 detection (GeNose C19). Utilizing this learning approach, we can obtain an effective and optimum feature combination, enabling the reduction by half of the number of employed sensors without downgrading the classification model performance. Based on the cross-validation test results on the training data, the hybrid algorithm can result in accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity values of (86 ± 3)%, (88 ± 6)%, and (84 ± 6)%, respectively. Meanwhile, for the testing data, a value of 87% is obtained for all the three metrics. These results exhibit the feasibility of using this hybrid filter-wrapper feature-selection method to pave the way for optimizing the GeNose C19 performance.

Processing Decision Tree Data Using Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence Technologies with Special Reference to Medical Application

Alternative methods are available for a wide range of medical conditions. Idealistically, doctors would have a tool that would analyse their patients' symptoms and suggest the most accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Artificial intelligence uses decision trees to predict and classify large datasets. A decision tree is a versatile prediction model. Its main purpose is to learn from observations and logic. Rule-based prediction systems represent and categorize events. We discuss the basic properties of decision trees and successful medical alternatives to the classic induction strategy. The study reviews some of the most important medical applications of decision trees (classification). We show researchers and managers how to accurately assess hospital and epidemic management behaviour. Additionally, we discuss decision trees and their applications. The results showed the effectiveness of decision trees in processing medical data by using internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence technologies in medical applications. Accordingly, the researchers recommend the use of these technologies in other fields of studies.
