Differential impacts of ionizing radiation on a sexually dimorphic trait in male and female Acheta domesticus

PURPOSE

In many Orthopteran species, including crickets, forewings exhibit substantial sexual dimorphism driven by sexual selection. In the cricket, Acheta domesticus, females are the 'choosy' sex and males exhibit multiple sexual signals to attract and successfully mate. Male forewings have highly specialized structures critical for acoustic signaling and mating. In contrast, female forewings currently serve no known purpose in this flightless species. Forewings also differ morphologically with male forewings containing complex acoustic producing and resonating regions and females lacking any defined structures. Due to their importance to mating as well as their structural complexity, impacts of environmental stress that target cricket forewing development may therefore have more severe consequences in males than females. Here, we investigate the sensitivity of a sexually dimorphic trait, forewing morphology, to an early life environmental stressor.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We applied ionizing radiation (0--27.8 Gy) as a stressor as dose can be precisely applied as well as its relevance in both environmental contamination and use in the Sterile Insect Technique.

RESULTS

A canonical variate analysis indicated that wing shape was significantly altered in males at all doses; .58 Gy, 2.3 Gy, 4.6 Gy, 16.2 Gy, and 23.2 Gy. In females, shape was significantly altered at 27.8 Gy and 23.2 Gy groups and to a lesser extent at .58 Gy and 16.2 Gy. Linear regression analysis of centroid size indicated a dose dependent decline in wing size in both sexes, with males exhibiting more decline. Fluctuating asymmetry, a measure of environmental sensitivity, revealed that males were more sensitive to shape changes due to stress than females. This difference in sensitivity is likely due to the complexity of male forewings.

CONCLUSION

These results expand understanding of sex dimorphism in stress responses and sensitivity to ionizing radiation.

Sexual selection and predation drive the repeated evolution of stridulation in Heteroptera and other arthropods

Acoustic and substrate-borne vibrations are among the most widely used signalling modalities in animals. Arthropods display a staggering diversity of vibroacoustic organs generating acoustic sound and/or substrate-borne vibrations, and are fundamental to our broader understanding of the evolution of animal signalling. The primary mechanism that arthropods use to generate vibroacoustic signals is stridulation, which involves the rubbing together of opposing body parts. Although stridulation is common, its behavioural context and evolutionary drivers are often hard to pinpoint, owing to limited synthesis of empirical observations on stridulatory species. This is exacerbated by the diversity of mechanisms involved and the sparsity of their description in the literature, which renders their documentation a challenging task. Here, we present the most comprehensive review to date on the systematic distribution and behavioural context of stridulation. We use the megadiverse heteropteran insects as a model, together with multiple arthropod outgroups (arachnids, myriapods, and selected pancrustaceans). We find that stridulatory vibroacoustic signalling has evolved independently at least 84 times and is present in roughly 20% of Heteroptera, representing a remarkable case of convergent evolution. By studying the behavioural context of stridulation across Heteroptera and 189 outgroup lineages, we find that predation pressure and sexual selection are the main behaviours associated with stridulation across arthropods, adding further evidence for their role as drivers of large-scale signalling and morphological innovation in animals. Remarkably, the absence of tympanal ears in most Heteroptera suggests that they typically cannot detect the acoustic component of their stridulatory signals. This demonstrates that the adoption of new signalling modalities is not always correlated with the ability to perceive those signals, especially when these signals are directed towards interspecific receivers in defensive contexts. Furthermore, by mapping their morphology and systematic distribution, we show that stridulatory organs tend to evolve in specific body parts, likely originating from cleaning motions and pre-copulatory displays that are common to most arthropods. By synthesising our understanding of stridulation and stridulatory organs across major arthropod groups, we create the necessary framework for future studies to explore their systematic and behavioural significance, their potential role in sensory evolution and innovation, and the biomechanics of this mode of signalling.

Fluctuating Asymmetry in the Polymorphic Sand Cricket (Gryllus firmus): Are More Functionally Important Structures Always More Symmetric?

Asymmetry in bilateral structures occurs when animals experience perturbations during development. This fluctuating asymmetry (FA) may serve as a reliable indicator of the functional importance of a structure. For example, locomotor structures often display lower levels of FA than other paired structures, highlighting that selection can maintain symmetry in traits important for survival or reproduction. Species that have multiple distinct morphs with unique behaviors and morphologies represent an attractive model for studying the relationship between symmetry and function. The sand field cricket (Gryllus firmus) has two separate morphs that allow us to directly test whether individuals maintain higher levels of symmetry in the structures most vital for maximizing fitness based on their specific life strategy. Longwing (LW) individuals can fly but postpone reproduction until after a dispersal event, whereas shortwing (SW) individuals cannot fly but begin reproducing in early adulthood. We quantified FA across a suite of key morphological structures indicative of investment in growth, reproduction, and flight capability for males and females across the morphs. Although we did not find significant differences in FA across traits, as predicted, locomotor compensation strategies may reduce selective pressures on symmetry or developmental patterns may limit the optimization between trait form and function.

Abstract

Primary locomotor structures often display lower levels of FA than other paired structures, highlighting that selection can maintain symmetry in fitness-enhancing traits. Polyphenic species represent an attractive model for studying the fine-scale relationship between trait form and function, because multiple morphs exhibit unique life history adaptations that rely on different traits to maximize fitness. Here, we investigated whether individuals of the wing polyphenic sand field cricket (Gryllus firmus) maintain higher levels of symmetry in the bilateral structures most vital for maximizing fitness based on their specific life history strategy. We quantified FA and directional asymmetry (DA) across a suite of key morphological structures indicative of investment in somatic growth, reproduction, and flight capability for males and females across the flight-capable longwing (LW) and flight-incapable shortwing (SW) morphs. Although we did not find significant differences in FA across traits, hindwings lacked DA that was found in all other structures. We predicted that functionally important traits should maintain a higher level of symmetry; however, locomotor compensation strategies may reduce the selective pressures on symmetry or developmental constraints may limit the optimization between trait form and function.
