Cardiac tumours in children: a single-centre experience and literature review

Cardiac tumours are extremely rare in children. Although more than 90% are benign, children can develop obstructive or embolisation derived symptoms, arrhythmias, constitutional symptoms, cardiac tamponade, or even sudden death. Although the majority are asymptomatic, and some spontaneously regress, appropriate follow-up is needed on a case-by-case basis, as patients may develop late symptoms. Definitive diagnosis is only possible through histological analysis; however, it is possible to infer tumour type with a high grade of certainty based on imaging features, particularly cardiac magnetic resonance. Surgical resection is advocated for those causing symptoms, obstruction, cardiac dysfunction, and high risk of embolisation. The aim of this review is to present the state of the art related to cardiac tumours in the paediatric population, in the context of our own experience.

Radiopathologic correlation of a tricuspid valve papillary fibroelastoma detected in an infant

Papillary fibroelastomas are benign primary cardiac tumors that usually arise from the valve apparatus and are rare in the pediatric population. Involvement of the tricuspid valve is even less common with only a few cases reported in the literature. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is a valuable examination that aids in differentiating a tumor from a thrombus. We present the case of an 11-month-old girl referred by her pediatrician to investigate a murmur noted since birth. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a pathologically proven papillary fibroelastoma arising from the tricuspid valve characterized by magnetic resonance imaging in an infant.

Pulmonary Eosinophilic Inflammatory Infiltration Post-Intensive Care in a Nearly Drowned Young Man with Papillary Fibroelastoma: A Rare Complication Discovered by Forensic Autopsy

Papillary fibroelastoma is a rare benign lesion of heart (1). It is the second most common primary cardiac neoplasm, accounting for 4.4-8% of all tumors of the heart (2). We described a forensic autopsy of a nearly drowned young man with cardiac papillary fibroelastoma who died because of a pulmonary inflammatory infiltration rich in granulocytes after intensive care. This occurrence is rare but possible and should be kept in mind because a lung inflammatory infiltrate rich in eosinophilic granulocytes can be present in different pathological conditions and differential diagnoses are often difficult to do.
