Font effects of Chinese characters and pseudo-characters on the N400: Evidence for an orthographic processing view

Parallel phonological processing of Chinese characters revealed by flankers tasks

An important and extensively researched question in the field of reading is whether readers can process multiple words in parallel. An unresolved issue regarding this question is whether the phonological information from foveal and parafoveal words can be processed in parallel, i.e., parallel phonological processing. The present study aims to investigate whether there is parallel phonological processing of Chinese characters. The original and the revised flankers tasks were applied. In both tasks, a foveal target character was presented in isolation in the no-flanker condition, flanked on both sides by a parafoveal homophone in the homophone-flanker condition, and by a non-homophonic character in the unrelated-flanker condition. Participants were instructed to fixate on the target characters and press two keys to indicate whether they knew the target characters (lexical vs. non-lexical). In the original flankers task, the stimuli were presented for 150 ms without a post-mask. In the revised flankers task, we set the stimulus exposure time (duration of the stimuli plus the blank interval between the stimuli and the post-mask) to each participant's lexical decision threshold to prevent participants from processing the target and flanker characters serially. In both tasks, reaction times to the lexical targets were significantly shorter in the homophone-flanker condition than in the unrelated-flanker condition, suggesting parallel phonological processing of Chinese characters. In the revised flankers task, accuracy rates to the lexical targets were significantly lower in the unrelated-flanker condition compared to the homophone-flanker condition, further supporting parallel phonological processing of Chinese characters. Moreover, reaction times to the lexical targets were the shortest in the no-flanker condition in both tasks, reflecting the attention distribution over both the target and flanker characters. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the parallel processing mechanisms involved in reading.

Interactions of stimulus quality and frequency on N400 in Chinese character recognition: Evidence for cascaded processing

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded during a delayed character-matching (target-probe matching) task to examine the joint effects of stimulus quality (blurriness) and character frequency on the N400. The behavioral results indicated robust interactive effects of stimulus quality and character frequency on response times, suggesting the cascade of pre-lexical activation to the lexical stage. The ERP results showed an interaction between stimulus quality and character frequency on N400-like amplitude. As the N400 is basically a marker of semantic processing, these ERP findings suggested that the direct impact of stimulus blurriness on pre-lexical processing could be further cascaded to semantic processing via lexical stage. The converging behavioral and N400 evidence for the interactive effects of stimulus quality and character frequency accords well with the interactive activation (IA) model, in which stimulus quality and character frequency affect at least a common stage in a cascaded processing manner.

Visual mismatch response and fMRI signal adaptation correlate in the occipital-temporal cortex

Several electrophysiological studies found response differences to a given stimulus when it is repeated frequently as compared to when it occurs rarely in oddball sequences. Initially defined in acoustic perception, such difference also exists in the visual modality and is referred to as visual mismatch negativity (vMMN). However, the repetition of a stimulus also leads to the reduction of the blood oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) signal (fMRI adaptation, fMRIa) when compared to alternating stimuli in fMRI experiments. So far no study compared the vMMN to fMRIa within the same paradigm and participants. Here we tested the possible connection between fMRIa and vMMN in a visual oddball paradigm in two separate sessions, acquiring electrophysiological and neuroimaging data for real and false characters from the same participants. We found significant visual mismatch response (vMM) as well as fMRIa for both character types. Importantly, the magnitude of the vMM over the CP1 electrode cluster showed a significant correlation with the fMRIa within the letter form area, for real characters. This finding suggests that similar neural mechanisms are responsible for the two phenomena.
