Abstract
Different lines of evidence indicate that the structure and physiology of the basal ganglia and the thalamus is disturbed in schizophrenia. However, it is unknown whether the volume and shape of these subcortical structures are affected in schizophrenia with auditory hallucinations (AH), a core positive symptom of the disorder. We took structural MRI from 63 patients with schizophrenia, including 36 patients with AH and 27 patients who had never experienced AH (NAH), and 51 matched healthy controls. We extracted volumes for the left and right thalamus, globus pallidus, putamen, caudate and nucleus accumbens. Shape analysis was also carried out. When comparing to controls, the volume of the right globus pallidus, thalamus, and putamen, was only affected in AH patients. The volume of the left putamen was also increased in individuals with AH, whereas the left globus pallidus was affected in both groups of patients. The shapes of right and left putamen and thalamus were also affected in both groups. The shape of the left globus pallidus was only altered in patients lacking AH, both in comparison to controls and to cases with AH. Lastly, the general PANSS subscale was correlated with the volume of the right thalamus, and the right and left putamen, in patients with AH. We have found volume and shape alterations of many basal ganglia and thalamus in patients with and without AH, suggesting in some cases a possible relationship between this positive symptom and these morphometric alterations.

Abstract
Newer research around extreme experiences is showing that recovery is far more prevalent than has been represented in the past. In addition, some aspects that have traditionally been considered the first line of treatment are now being found to be less effective than once believed or even harmful. However, approaches that combine new information, compassion, and that restore dignity to the individual are finally being recognized as the underpinnings of successful outcomes. Individuals who have gone through an extreme state deserve to learn about the impact of cultural aspects and childhood experiences on such. They should be reminded that many will experience positive growth from the extreme state itself. It should be normalized how frequently these experiences arise throughout the world and how often people do recover. It is important for individuals to understand the beneficial impact of enhancing relationships and connections in their daily life and of fostering empowerment for themselves and their choices. By incorporating research findings and inviting the individual to seek out a meaningful life, as determined by themselves, people can and do recover from these experiences.

Abstract
It has been documented that individuals who hear auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) exhibit diminished capabilities in processing external speech. While functional neuroimaging studies have attempted to characterise the cortical regions and networks facilitating these deficits in a bid to understand AVH, considerable methodological heterogeneity has prevented a consensus being reached. The current systematic review investigated the neurobiological underpinnings of external speech processing deficits in voice-hearers in 38 studies published between January 1990 to June 2020. AVH-specific deviations in the activity and lateralisation of the temporal auditory regions were apparent when processing speech sounds, words and sentences. During active or affective listening tasks, functional connectivity changes arose within the language, limbic and default mode networks. However, poor study quality and lack of replicable results plague the field. A detailed list of recommendations has been provided to improve the quality of future research on this topic.

Abstract
Hallucinations are elusive phenomena that have been associated with psychotic behavior, but that have a high prevalence in healthy population. Some generative mechanisms of Auditory Hallucinations (AH) have been proposed in the literature, but so far empirical evidence is scarce. The most widely accepted generative mechanism hypothesis nowadays consists in the faulty workings of a network of brain areas including the emotional control, the audio and language processing, and the inhibition and self-attribution of the signals in the auditive cortex. In this paper, we consider two methods to analyze resting state fMRI (rs-fMRI) data, in order to measure effective connections between the brain regions involved in the AH generation process. These measures are the Dynamic Causal Modeling (DCM) cross-covariance function (CCF) coefficients, and the partially directed coherence (PDC) coefficients derived from Granger Causality (GC) analysis. Effective connectivity measures are treated as input classifier features to assess their significance by means of cross-validation classification accuracy results in a wrapper feature selection approach. Experimental results using Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers on an rs-fMRI dataset of schizophrenia patients with and without a history of AH confirm that the main regions identified in the AH generative mechanism hypothesis have significant effective connection values, under both DCM and PDC evaluation.
