Abstract
To achieve the triple purpose of enhancing lutein and protein contents as well as improving organoleptic properties in biomass of Auxenochlorella pyrenoidosa mutant as raw material of future food, a novel yellow mutant, CX41 strain, was successfully selected through atmospheric and room temperature plasma (ARTP) mutagenesis and norflurazon-based screening. CX41 strain exhibited a significantly increased lutein (0.86 mg/g) and protein (49.00 % DW) contents simultaneously, while higher levels of total (33.47 % DW) and essential amino acids (14.78 % DW) were achieved with higher amino acid score (86.49) than that of the original A4-1 strain, a yellow and high protein mutant bred previously. Sensory evaluation showed that CX41 biomass has more comparable to A4-1, while in comparison to the wild type (WT), it has a more inclination towards roasted, with a fainter grassy, woody, rancid and fishy odor, and a significant improvement in taste is reflected by a decrease of 8.40 % in sweetness, a reduction of 14.86 % in bitterness, and an increase of 5.93 % in umami intensity. Metabolome analysis revealed that the superior sensory profile was due to the significantly reduced relative odor activity of β-ionone (herbaceous odor) and substances such as 1-octene, hexanal, 1-octen-3-ol, and heptanal (fishy and rancid odors). The extensive enhancements demonstrated CX41 biomass as a highly promising raw material with high nutrients of lutein and protein as well as excellent taste and flavor for future food application.

Abstract
Mixotrophic microalgal solutions are efficient nutrient recovery methods, with potential to prolong the cultivation seasons in temperate climates. To improve operation sustainability, the study used landfill leachate for nitrogen source and whey permeate for phosphorus and organic carbon. A non-axenic polyculture, dominated by green algae, was cultivated in mixotrophic mode on glucose or whey permeate compared to a photoautotrophic control in outdoor pilot-scaled raceway ponds during Nordic spring and autumn. The whey permeate treatment had the highest algal growth rate and productivity (0.48 d-1, 183.8 mg L-1 d-1), nutrient removal (total nitrogen: 21.71 mg L-1 d-1, total phosphorus: 3.05 mg L-1 d-1) and recovery rate (carbon: 85.19 mg L-1 d-1, nitrogen: 17.01 mg L-1 d-1, phosphorus: 2.58 mg L-1 d-1). When grown in whey permeate, algal cultures demonstrated consistent productivity and biochemical composition in high (spring) and low light conditions (autumn), suggesting the feasibility of year-round production in Nordic conditions.

Abstract
Due to human activity and natural processes, heavy metal contamination frequently affects the earth's water resources. The pollution can be categorized as resistant and persistent since it poses a significant risk to terrestrial and marine biological systems and human health. Because of this, several appeals and demands have been made worldwide to try and clean up these contaminants. Through bioremediation, algal cells are frequently employed to adsorb and eliminate heavy metals from the environment. Bioremediation is seen as a desirable strategy with few adverse effects and low cost. Activities and procedures for bioremediation involving algal cells depend on various environmental factors, including salinity, pH, temperature, the concentration of heavy metals, the amount of alga biomass, and food availability. Additionally, the effectiveness of removing heavy metals from the environment by assessing how environmental circumstances affect algal activities. The main issues discussed are (1) heavy metal pollution of water bodies, the role of algal cells in heavy metal removal, the methods by which algae cells take up and store heavy metals, and the process of turning the algae biomass produced into biofuel. (2) To overcome the environmental factors and improve heavy metals bioremediation, many strategies are applied, such as immobilizing the cells, consortium culture, and using dry mass rather than living cells. (3) The processes for converting produced algal biomass into biofuels like biodiesel and biomethanol. The present study discusses the life cycle assessment and the limitations of biofuel products from algae biomass.

Abstract
Sustainable energy transition has brought the attention towards microalgae utilization as potential feedstock due to its tremendous capabilities over its predecessors for generating more energy with reduced carbon footprint. However, the commercialization of microalgae feedstock remains debatable due to the various factors and considerations taken into scaling-up the conventional microalgal upstream processes. This review provides a state-of-the-art assessment over the recent developments of available and existing microalgal upstream cultivation systems catered for maximum biomass production. The key growth parameters and main cultivation modes necessary for optimized microalgal growth conditions along with the fundamental aspects were also reviewed and evaluated comprehensively. In addition, the advancements and strategies towards potential scale-up of the microalgal cultivation technologies were highlighted to provide insights for further development into the upstream processes aimed at sustainable circular bioeconomy.

Abstract
The present work evaluated the ultrasound (US) effects on the growth of Pseudoneochloris marina and Chlorella zofingiensis. For P. marina, US treatment did not increase cell proliferation and reduced cell density when used for 60 min (exponential phase, for 5 days), indicating a possible occurrence of cell damage. For C. zofingiensis, the application of discontinuous US for 10 min resulted in an increase of 65 % in biomass concentration compared to the control. These distinct behaviors indicate that microalgae species react differently to physical stimuli. After US treatment, a reduction of carotenoid, chlorophyll, lipid and protein concentrations was observed, which may be related to changes in the metabolic pathways to produce these compounds. Overall, the results of the present study show the potential of discontinuous US to enhance microalgae cell proliferation.

Abstract
Blue biotechnology can greatly help solve some of the most serious social problems due to its wide biodiversity, which includes marine environments. Microalgae are important resources for human needs as an alternative to terrestrial plants because of their rich biodiversity, rapid growth, and product contributions in many fields. The production scheme for microalgae biomass mainly consists of two processes: (I) the Build-Up process and (II) the Pull-Down process. The Build-Up process consists of (1) the super strain concept and (2) cultivation aspects. The Pull-Down process includes (1) harvesting and (2) drying algal biomass. In some cases, such as the manufacture of algal products, the (3) extraction of bioactive compounds is included. Microalgae have a wide range of commercial applications, such as in aquaculture, biofertilizer, bioenergy, pharmaceuticals, and functional foods, which have several industrial and academic applications around the world. The efficiency and success of biomedical products derived from microalgal biomass or its metabolites mainly depend on the technologies used in the cultivation, harvesting, drying, and extraction of microalgae bioactive molecules. The current review focuses on recent advanced technologies that enhance microalgae biomass within microalgae production schemes. Moreover, the current work highlights marine drugs and human health products derived from microalgae that can improve human immunity and reduce viral activities, especially COVID-19.

Abstract
A growing world population is causing hazardous compounds to form at an increasingly rapid rate, calling for ecological action. Wastewater management and treatment is an expensive process that requires appropriate integration technology to make it more feasible and cost-effective. Algae are of great interest as potential feedstocks for various applications, including environmental sustainability, biofuel production, and the manufacture of high-value bioproducts. Bioremediation with microalgae is a potential approach to reduce wastewater pollution. The need for effective nutrient recovery, greenhouse gas reduction, wastewater treatment, and biomass reuse has led to a wide interest in the use of microalgae for wastewater treatment. Furthermore, algae biomass can be used to produce bioenergy and high-value bioproducts. The use of microalgae as medicine (production of bioactive and medicinal compounds), biofuels, biofertilizers, and food additives has been explored by researchers around the world. Technological and economic barriers currently prevent the commercial use of algae, and optimal downstream processes are needed to reduce production costs. Therefore, the simultaneous use of microalgae for wastewater treatment and biofuel production could be an economical approach to address these issues. This article provides an overview of algae and their application in bioremediation, bioenergy production, and bioactive compound production. It also highlights the current problems and opportunities in the algae-based sector, which has recently become quite promising.

Abstract
Microalgae contribute significantly to the global carbon cycle through photosynthesis. Given their ability to efficiently convert solar energy and atmospheric carbon dioxide into chemical compounds, such as carbohydrates, and generate oxygen during the process, microalgae represent an excellent and feasible carbohydrate bioresource. Microalgae-based biofuels are technically viable and, delineate a green and innovative field of opportunity for bioenergy exploitation. Microalgal polysaccharides are one of the most versatile groups for biotechnological applications and its content can be increased by manipulating cultivation conditions. Microalgal carbohydrates can be used to produce a variety of biofuels, including bioethanol, biobutanol, biomethane, and biohydrogen. This review provides an overview of microalgal carbohydrates, focusing on their use as feedstock for biofuel production, highlighting the carbohydrate metabolism and approaches for their enhancement. Moreover, biofuels produced from microalgal carbohydrate are showed, in addition to a new bibliometric study of current literature on microalgal carbohydrates and their use.

Abstract
The aim of this review is to provide insights into the upstream processing of microalgae, and to highlight the advantages of each step. This review discusses the most important steps of the upstream processing in microalgae research such as cultivation modes, photobioreactors design, preparation of culture medium, control of environmental factors, supply of microalgae seeds and monitoring of microalgal growth. An extensive list of bioreactors and their working volumes used, elemental composition of some well-known formulated cultivation media, different types of wastewater used for microalgal cultivation and environmental variables studied in microalgae research has been compiled in this review from the vast literature. This review also highlights existing challenges and knowledge gaps in upstream processing of microalgae and future research needs are suggested.

Abstract
For mass culture of photosynthetic green microalgae, industrial flue gases can represent a low-cost resource of CO2. However, flue gases are often avoided, because they often also contain high levels of SO2 and/or NO2, which cause significant acidification of media to below pH 3 due to production of sulfuric and nitric acid. This creates an unsuitable environment for the neutrophilic microalgae commonly used in large-scale commercial production. To address this issue, we have looked at selecting acid-tolerant microalgae via growth at pH 2.5 carried out with samples bioprospected from an active smelter site. Of the eight wild samples collected, one consisting mainly of Coccomyxa sp. grew at pH 2.5 and achieved a density of 640 mg L-1. Furthermore, three previously bioprospected green microalgae from acidic waters (pH 3-4.5) near abandoned mine sites were also re-acclimated down to their in-situ pH environment after approximately 4 years spent at neutral pH. Of those three, an axenic culture of Coccomyxa sp. was the most successful at re-acclimating and achieved the highest density of 293.1 mg L-1 and maximum daily productivity of 38.8 mg L-1 day-1 at pH 3. Re-acclimation of acid-tolerant species is, therefore, achievable when directly placed at their original pH, but gradual reduction in pH is recommended to give the cells time to acclimate.
