Breath Versus Emotions: The Impact of Different Foci of Attention During Mindfulness Meditation on the Experience of Negative and Positive Emotions

Savoring changes novel positive mindset targets of GAD treatment: Optimism, prioritizing positivity, kill-joy thinking, and worry mediation

This study analyzed effects of savoring on unstudied positive mindset targets of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) treatment (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05040061). 85 students with GAD were randomly assigned to one of two ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) on smartphone for seven days. The SkillJoy EMI promoted practices for savoring positive emotions. An active control EMI mirrored SkillJoy, yet did not include savoring or positive emotion. Optimism, worry, kill-joy thinking (lessening positive emotion with cognition), and prioritization of positive emotion activities and goals were assessed at pre-trial, eighth-day, post-trial, and 30th-day follow-up. Savoring was assessed pre-trial and fifth-day mid-trial. Longitudinal linear mixed models and simple slope analyses examined change between and within conditions. Bias-corrected bootstrapping path analysis examined mediation of worry change by increased savoring. SkillJoy led to significantly greater increases in both optimism and prioritizing positivity than the control from pre-trial to post-trial and pre-trial to follow-up. Both interventions significantly reduced kill-joy thinking at both timepoints with Skilljoy leading to marginally greater change at post-trial. Pre- to mid-trial increases in savoring mediated the relationships between treatment condition and reductions in worry at both post-trial and follow-up.

The effect of ten versus twenty minutes of mindfulness meditation on state mindfulness and affect

We aimed to elucidate the effects of "dose" of a single-session of mindfulness meditation on state mindfulness and affect as well as moderators of effects. 372 adults recruited remotely via Amazon's MTurk platform were randomly assigned to either a: 10-min mindfulness meditation, 20-min mindfulness meditation, 10-min control, or 20-min control. Control conditions were recordings of a National Geographic article. Primary outcomes were changes in state mindfulness, anxiety, and negative and positive affect. Moderator variables included neuroticism, trait mindfulness, and prior meditation experience. Collapsing across doses, participants in mindfulness conditions reported greater increases in state mindfulness than in control conditions. There was a greater increase in state mindfulness in the 10-min mindfulness condition versus 10-min control condition. There were no differences between 10- and 20-min mindfulness conditions. Exploratory moderation analyses indicated that meditation (10 or 20) versus control (10 or 20) predicted increased state mindfulness among participants with lower trait mindfulness. Additionally, 20-min versus 10-min meditation predicted greater decreases in state anxiety among individuals with high trait mindfulness. Dose-response relationships were minimal, suggesting that 10 and 20 min of meditation may improve state mindfulness comparably. Findings support the benefits of brief mindfulness meditation and suggest that trait mindfulness moderates certain outcomes.

The search for scientific meaning in mindfulness research: Insights from a scoping review

There are on-going debates about what is and is not 'mindfulness'. These debates are stifling rigorous academic research as scientific precision is a precursor to shared meaning. While mindfulness is a growing field of research, these divergent and conflated meanings are limiting deeper interdisciplinary research. Interventions designed in one practice context may not be useful in other contexts because meaning is not transferred between settings. This review clarifies the various research domains that study mindfulness and the conceptual and operational definitions in each domain. This two-stage study comprises a scoping review of mindfulness classifications and a comparative content mapping of mindfulness studies from 2015 to 2021. The initial comprehensive search strategy followed the preferred reporting items for scoping reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) method. The comparative analysis was conducted using Leximancer. Findings illustrate a complex growing research corpus on mindfulness that is somewhat confused. The results from the scoping review show three shared domains in mindfulness classifications: short-term effects of mindfulness, long-term effects of mindfulness, and mindfulness practices. The results from the content mapping show four domains of mindfulness research: mental health, behavioural change, cognitive neuroscience, and ethical mindfulness. Operational definitions of mindfulness are not articulated clearly in these domains. Conceptual and operational definitions in the 'ethical mindfulness' domain are not yet developed. To enhance scientific progress in mindfulness research, further investigations of mindfulness classifications need to be developed. Content mapping and semantic typology is a potential candidate for future classification. More attention should be paid to developing operational definitions according to specific research domains. Scholars in the ethical mindfulness domain will need solid conceptual and operational definitions to support their research efforts.

Neural correlates of emotion acceptance and suppression in borderline personality disorder

BACKGROUND

Emotion dysregulation is a central feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Since impaired emotion regulation contributes to disturbed emotion functioning in BPD, it is crucial to study underlying neural activity. The current study aimed at investigating the neural correlates of two emotion regulation strategies, namely emotion acceptance and suppression, which are both important treatment targets in BPD.

METHODS

Twenty-one women with BPD and 23 female healthy control participants performed an emotion regulation task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). While watching fearful movie clips, participants were instructed to either accept or to suppress upcoming emotions compared to passive viewing.

RESULTS

Results revealed acceptance-related insular underactivation and suppression-related caudate overactivation in subjects with BPD during the emotion regulation task.

CONCLUSION

This is a first study on the neural correlates of emotion acceptance and suppression in BPD. Altered insula functioning during emotion acceptance may reflect impairments in emotional awareness in BPD. Increased caudate activity is linked to habitual motor and cognitive processes and therefore may accord to the well-established routine in BPD patients to suppress emotional experiences.

Caudate hyperactivation during the processing of happy faces in borderline personality disorder

BACKGROUND

Emotion dysfunction and anhedonia are main problems in borderline personality disorder (BPD). In the present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we investigated neural activation during the processing of happy faces and its correlates with habitual emotion acceptance in patients with BPD.

METHODS

22 women with BPD and 26 female healthy controls watched movie clips of happy and neutral faces during fMRI without any instruction of emotion regulation. To associate neural activation with habitual emotion acceptance, we included individual scores of the Emotion Acceptance Questionnaire (EAQ) as a covariate in brain data analysis.

RESULTS

All participants showed amygdala, temporal and occipital activation during the processing of happy compared to neutral faces. Compared with healthy controls, patients with BPD showed significantly more activation within the bilateral caudate. We did not find significant correlations with emotion acceptance.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results indicate caudate hyperactivation in patients with BPD during the processing of happy faces. Although patients reported significantly less emotion acceptance of positive emotions, an association with neural activation was not detectable.

Effects of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on Stress, Heart Rate Variability, Affect, and Wellbeing among People with Schizophrenia

Mindfulness-based stress reduction programs have been found to be effective in reducing the stress response and improving the psychological wellbeing of various populations. We aimed to confirm the effects of a mindfulness-based stress reduction program on perceived stress, heart rate variability, positive and negative affect, and subjective wellbeing of community-dwelling people with schizophrenia. The participants in this study were 26 people with schizophrenia (experimental group: 14, control group: 12) enrolled in two community mental health centers located in Gyeonggi Province in South Korea. In the experimental group, the mindfulness-based stress reduction program was applied once a week for 60 min over 8 weeks. The experimental group showed a significantly greater decrease in perceived stress and negative affect, as well as significantly greater improvement in heart rate variability than the control group. The mindfulness-based stress reduction program was an effective nursing intervention to reduce stress and negative affect in people with schizophrenia.

Impact of individualized intervention on the psychological status of patients with localized small cell lung cancer complicated with pleural effusion

To explore the intervention effects of individualized measures on the psychological status of patients with localized small cell lung cancer complicated with pleural effusion (LSCLC-PE). A total of 79 LSCLC patients were selected for comparing the source of psychological control and psychological distress between the patients with combined (group LSCLC-PE, n = 38) and non-combined pleural effusion (group LSCLC, n = 41). LSCLC-PE patients were randomly sub-divided into the control group (CON, for conventional intervention) and the observation group (OBS, for individualized intervention) for evaluating the intervention effects between these two subgroups using the SCL-90 scale. The PHLC score, psychological pain score, and sources of psychological pain (proportion of dyspnea, etc.) in group LSCLC-PE were higher than group LSCLC, but the IHLC and CHLC scores were lower; after intervention, the somatization, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and total average score in subgroup OBS were statistically lower than subgroup CON. LSCLC-PE patients have poor psychological status, and intervention can improve their psychological status.

A concept analysis: Emotional regulation of nurses

AIM

To explore the concept of emotional regulation in nursing.

BACKGROUND

People are exposed to a variety of potentially emotion-provoking stimuli almost on a daily basis. The fact that these types of stimuli do not trigger full-blown emotions every time suggests that people are able to manage their own emotions through an internal process. The process is referred to as emotional regulation (ER). Nursing is a stressful and emotionally charged profession, yet the concept of ER is not well explored in the nursing literature.

DESIGN

Concept analysis.

DATA SOURCE

Electronic databases searched were CINAHL, PubMed, PsycInfo, and Google Scholar. Forty-one articles were used in the review of this concept, of which six articles were used to review ER in nursing. Most of the articles on ER were from the field of psychology.

REVIEW METHODS

Walker and Avant's eight-step to concept analysis. Data extracted from the articles were used in identifying the definitions, related concepts, uses of the concept of ER, and antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents.

RESULTS

Four defining attributes of ER were identified as self-awareness, control, emotional expression, and active thinking. Definitions, the uses of the concept of ER, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents are discussed. Model, related and contrary cases were developed.

CONCLUSION

The concept of ER has implications and significance to nursing as nurses are exposed to a variety of emotion-provoking situations when performing nursing tasks.
