The Role of Social Network on Social Isolation and Anxiety on Attentional Switching of Students

ABSTRACT

The study is devoted to the study of the relationship between stress caused in students by social isolation and the ability to switch tasks as one of the basic functions of attention. The study draws on the theoretical background of The Attentional Control Theory as the most appropriate method to study the factors influencing attention control under the influence of the effects of stress. The experiment includes a sample of 76 Chinese university students who experienced forced social isolation for 6 months. A statistically significant increase in physiological markers of stress was found in both cases, indicating that social isolation leads to an accumulation of stress and an increase in the intensity of stress reactions when students reexperience social stress after isolation. The practical significance lies in changing the approach to coping with the results of social isolation stress in students through changing the method of presenting educational information.

Flow experience in foreign language writing: Its effect on students’ writing process and writing performance

This research investigates Chinese EFL students’ flow experience in academic writing and its effect on students’ writing performance. The research consists of two studies: (1) a preliminary study involving a survey of 162 college students immediately after their completion of a short English essay to examine whether and how intensely they experienced flow during their writing and whether their perceived levels of challenge of the writing task and their writing skills affected their flow experience, and (2) a main study including a survey of 216 different students at the end of a semester-long writing course to ascertain how frequently these students experienced flow during the course, whether their intrinsic writing motivation and attention control ability were significantly correlated with their flow experience, and whether their flow frequency had an effect on their performance in the writing course. Results of statistical tests (including Class Factor Analyses and regression analyses) of the data in the preliminary study revealed that a large majority (76%) of the students experienced a certain level of flow in their writing and their perceived levels of writing skills had a significant influence on their flow experience. The statistical test results of the main study indicated that (1) 66.4% of the students experienced flow with various frequency levels, while 33.6% of the students rarely or never experienced flow, (2) students’ level of motivation and attention control were significantly correlated with their level of flow frequency, and (3) students’ flow frequency had a significant influence on their writing course scores. Research and pedagogical implications of the study are also discussed.

Development and modelling of a school-based mental health intervention: the co-production of the R.E.A.C.T. programme

The lack of effective school-based interventions for addressing mental health issues and psychological well-being in young people, particularly those with stakeholder involvement, for reducing test anxiety in adolescents has caused a call for interventions to be developed through the process of co-production with the key stakeholders, i.e. teachers and students. The purpose of this paper is to present the development and modelling of a coproduced school-based intervention to improve mental health and psychological well-being in adolescents in the post-primary setting. The intervention was developed through a six step co-production model. This included an extensive evidence review, interviews (n = 7), focus groups (n = 6), observations in three school settings and initial modelling of the intervention programme and resources in the co-research partner school. Findings were used to identify the preferred structure and content of the intervention. A six-week intervention for 12–14 year olds was co-produced along with relevant teacher resources and student work books. The intervention consisting of a psycho-educational component and physical activity component underpinned by cognitive, behavioural and self-regulation theories aimed to reduce test anxiety and improve psychological well-being. The co-production model was a successful series of six steps used to create and refine the intervention. The programme represents a theoretically informed intervention comprising multiple components. This study contributes to a better understanding of the determinants of mental health issues among young people and how an intervention can be effectively co-produced. The results suggest that a feasibility study is warranted with teachers delivering the programme.

School educational models and child mental health among K-12 students: a scoping review

BACKGROUND

The promotion of mental health among children and adolescents is a public health imperative worldwide, and schools have been proposed as the primary and targeted settings for mental health promotion for students in grades K-12. This review sought to provide a comprehensive understanding of key factors involved in models of school education contributing to student mental health development, interrelationships among these factors and the cross-cultural differences across nations and societies.

METHODS

This scoping review followed the framework of Arksey and O'Malley and holistically reviewed the current evidence on the potential impacts of school-related factors or school-based interventions on student mental health in recent 5 years based on the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and PsycExtra databases.

RESULTS/FINDINGS

After screening 558 full-texts, this review contained a total of 197 original articles on school education and student mental health. Based on the five key factors (including curriculum, homework and tests, physical activities, interpersonal relationships and after-school activities) identified in student mental development according to thematic analyses, a multi-component school educational model integrating academic, social and physical factors was proposed so as to conceptualize the five school-based dimensions for K-12 students to promote student mental health development.

CONCLUSIONS

The lessons learned from previous studies indicate that developing multi-component school strategies to promote student mental health remains a major challenge. This review may help establish appropriate school educational models and call for a greater emphasis on advancement of student mental health in the K-12 school context among different nations or societies.

Thinking about worry: A systematic review and meta-analysis on the assessment of metacognitions in children and adolescents

BACKGROUND

The metacognitive model of generalized anxiety disorder identifies three forms of metacognition: Positive metacognitive beliefs about worry (POS), negative metacognitive beliefs about worry (NEG), and meta-worry. Though this model was originally developed relying on adult samples, it has since been applied to children and youth in different studies, and results mostly support its validity for this group. As the roles of POS, meta-worry, and age-effects do not appear to be fully clarified for children and adolescents yet, an integration of studies on children and adolescents and the metacognitive model is both timely and worthwhile.

AIM

To summarize the current research on relationships, age-effects, and measurements for POS, NEG, and meta-worry in childhood and youth.

METHODS

We carried out a literature search in the electronic databases PsycINFO, PubMed, PSYNDEX, and ERIC in 2017 and updated in 2020. Empirical research in German or English language on metacognition was included with child and adolescent samples diagnosed with anxiety disorders or healthy controls if POS, NEG, or meta-worry were measured. Studies were included for meta-analysis if they reported correlations between these metacognitions and anxiety or worry. Consensus rating for eligibility was done for 20.89% of full-texts with 90.32% agreement. Risk of bias was assessed with the appraisal tool for cross-sectional studies and consensus rating of appraisal tool for cross-sectional studies for 20.83% of included studies attaining agreement of intraclass correlation = 0.898. Overall, correlations between metacognitions, anxiety and worry were calculated with RevMan 5.4.1, assuming random-effects models. Meta-regressions with mean age as the covariate were performed via the online tool MetaMar 2.7.0. PROSPERO-ID: CRD42018078852.

RESULTS

Overall, k = 763 records and k = 78 additional records were identified. Of those, k = 48 studies with 12839 participants were included and of those, k = 24 studies were included for meta-analysis. Most studies showed consistent NEG correlations with worry and anxiety, as well as higher values for clinical than for non-clinical samples. POS findings were less consistent. Meta-analysis revealed large effects for NEG correlating with worry and anxiety, small to medium effects for POS correlating with worry and anxiety, as well as small to medium effects for POS correlating with NEG. Meta-regressions did not reveal mean age as a significant covariate. Meta-worry was assessed in only one study. We identified eight questionnaires and one interview-format that assess metacognition about worry in children and adolescents.

CONCLUSION

POS and NEG are measurable from the age of seven upwards and correlate with anxiety and worry without influences by age. Meta-worry requires further investigation.

A randomized experimental analysis of the attention training technique: Effects on worry and relevant processes in individuals with probable generalized anxiety disorder

CONTEXT

The Attention Training Technique (ATT, Wells, 1990) is an intervention guiding individuals to focus, shift, and divide their attention in response to sounds presented in an audiorecording. The ATT has long been recommended for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD); however, there is insufficient research on its effects on excessive worry and related processes.

OBJECTIVES

This experiment examined whether the ATT is more efficacious than a control intervention at reducing worry and modifying worry-related processes (e.g., attention control, negative metacognitive beliefs, attention bias, mindfulness).

PARTICIPANTS

78 adults with probable GAD.

DESIGN

Participants completed measures of worry and worry-related processes at the lab. They then monitored worry and attention daily for a week. Following this baseline, participants recompleted the lab measures and were randomly assigned to ATT or control. Participants listened to their assigned recording once/day for a week while again monitoring worry and attention daily. Participants then recompleted the lab measures.

RESULTS

The ATT did not perform better than the control condition on any measure. A variety of improvements were seen over the intervention period in both conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

ATT may not have meaningful effects on excessive worry and worry-related processes. Explanations for null findings are offered. CLINICALTRIALS.
