Abstract
Introduction Cognitive psychology is one of the important perspectives to understand depression. Compared with previous studies, recent researchers increasingly focused on the exploration of the comprehensive cognitive process of patients with depression. The cognitive operation ability of working memory is an important comprehensive cognitive process, which reflects how individuals establish representations. This is the basis for the formation of experience and schema. The purpose of this study is to explore whether there are abnormalities in cognitive manipulation in patients with depression, and to analyze its possible role in the pathogenesis and maintenance of depression. Method In this cross-sectional study, depressed patients was enrolled in the clinical psychology department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital as the case group, while healthy individuals were recruited in the hospital and social meetings as the control group. Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD)-17, Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) and rumination thinking scale (RRS) were adopted as measurement tools, and working memory operation tasks were adopted to test each subject, so as to measure their cognitive operation ability. Result A total of 78 depressed patients and 81 healthy individuals completed the study. The results showed that the rumination level of the case group was higher than that of the control group, and the difference was significant first; Second, in the "inconsistent" condition, the case group under different stimulus conditions when the response was significantly higher than the control group; Thirdly, the "cognitive operation consumption" value of the case group was significantly higher than that of the control group under the three stimulus conditions, among which, the operational cost value of sadness-neutral stimulus was significantly higher than that of the other two stimulus conditions. Conclusion Patients with depression had obvious difficulties in cognitive manipulation of information with different values in working memory, which reflected in the fact that it took them longer time to adjust the relationship between information and established new representations. Among them, patients with depression had a higher degree of cognitive manipulation of sad stimuli, indicating that their abnormal cognitive manipulation had certain emotion specificity. Finally, the difficulty of cognitive operation was closely related to the level of rumination.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to objectively evaluate the severity of impulsivity [behavior inhibitory control (BIC) impairment] among adolescents with depression. In particular, those involved in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviors, compared with those engaged in suicidal behaviors and adolescents without any self-injury behavior, using event-related potentials (ERPs) and event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP) within the two-choice oddball paradigm. Methods Participants with a current diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) engaged in repetitive NSSI for five or more days in the past year (n = 53) or having a history of at least one prior complete suicidal behavior (n = 31) were recruited in the self-injury group. Those without self-injury behavior were recruited in the MDD group (n = 40). They completed self-report scales and a computer-based two-choice oddball paradigm during which a continuous electroencephalogram was recorded. The difference waves in P3d were derived from the deviant minus standard wave, and the target index was the difference between the two conditions. We focused on latency and amplitude, and time-frequency analyses were conducted in addition to the conventional index. Results Participants with self-injury, compared to those with depression but without self-injury, exhibited specific deficits in BIC impairment, showing a significantly larger amplitude. Specifically, the NSSI group showed the highest value in amplitude and theta power, and suicidal behavior showed a high value in amplitude but the lowest value in theta power. These results may potentially predict the onset of suicide following repetitive NSSI. Conclusion These findings contribute to substantial progress in exploring neuro-electrophysiological evidence of self-injury behaviors. Furthermore, the difference between the NSSI and suicide groups might be the direction of prediction of suicidality.

Abstract
Although depression is associated with poor memory for positive material, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We used the Hierarchical Drift Diffusion Model (HDDM) to determine whether slow evidence accumulation at retrieval contributes to depressed individuals' difficulty remembering positive events. Participants completed the Beck Depression Inventory-II and were stratified into High BDI (HBDI; BDI-II > 20, n = 49) and Low BDI (LBDI; BDI-II < 6, n = 46) groups. Next, participants completed an oddball task in which neutral, negative, and positive pictures served as rare targets. One day later, recognition memory was tested by presenting the encoded ("old") pictures along with closely matched ("new") lures. Recognition accuracy was analyzed with a generalized linear model, and choice and response time data were analyzed with the HDDM. Recognition accuracy for old positive pictures was lower in HBDI versus LBDI participants, and the HDDM highlighted slow evidence accumulation during positive memory retrieval in the HBDI group. Impaired memory for positive material in depressed adults was related to slow evidence accumulation at retrieval. Because oddballs should elicit prediction errors that normally strengthen memory formation, these retrieval findings may reflect weak positive prediction errors, at encoding, in depressed adults.

Abstract
In daily life, it is important either to remember sometimes or to intentionally forget on other occasions. The issue of forgetting following instructions (i.e. directed forgetting, DF) has been broadly studied; however, whether the frequency of contents would matter in DF remains unclear, and the understanding of its neural mechanism in both circumstances of item memory and source memory requires improvement in depth. For these purposes, the current study manipulated word frequency and memory task to investigate relevant behavioral features and neural activities of DF. Adopting event-related potential (ERP) technique, this study applied two-character Chinese words of two types of word frequency (high vs low) in the item-method DF paradigm. During encoding, we found that the increased frontal positivity, an index of active inhibition, was regulated by both word frequency and memory task, while the enhanced parietal positivity reflecting selective rehearsal didn't fluctuate across conditions. In the course of test, three ERP old/new effects were identified: the familiarity-based FN400 and the recollection-driven LPC were both modulated by word frequency and memory task, but the right frontal old/new effect was significant solely in source memory; also, these effects provided compelling evidence for the influences of word frequency and memory task on DF. Our results reinforce the differentiation between absolute familiarity and relative familiarity in memory, reveal their sensitivity to DF, and also support the dual-process interpretation. Implications are made to examine more influential factors for future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with poor recollection, but the neural mechanisms responsible for this deficit are unclear. Recollection is supported by interactions between the hippocampus and cortex that appear to be mediated by oscillatory activity in the theta band (4-7 Hz) and that are elicited during source memory retrieval. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that evoked theta power during source memory retrieval would be reduced in MDD, as this would provide a physiological basis for deficient recollection in adults with depression. METHODS Morlet wavelets were applied to event-related potentials collected from 24 unmedicated adults with MDD and 24 healthy control adults during the retrieval of source and semantic memories. Whole-scalp analyses focused on group differences in evoked theta power. RESULTS There were no group differences in behavior. Nevertheless, from 400 to 799 ms, theta power was broadly reduced in adults with depression versus healthy adults. This reduction was observed during source and semantic retrieval. Parietal midline electrodes showed significantly reduced theta power during source-but not semantic-retrieval in adults with depression versus healthy adults in this interval. Furthermore, theta power over parietal midline sites from 400 to 799 ms was more strongly related to source memory accuracy in healthy adults versus adults with depression. CONCLUSIONS Relative to healthy control adults, adults with depression showed reduced theta power during memory retrieval and a weaker relationship between parietal midline theta power and source memory accuracy. These findings indicate that abnormal theta signals may contribute to memory deficits in adults with MDD.

Depression Detection Using Relative EEG Power Induced by Emotionally Positive Images and a Conformal Kernel Support Vector Machine. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2018. Abstract
Electroencephalography (EEG) can assist with the detection of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the ability to distinguish adults with MDD from healthy individuals using resting-state EEG features has reached a bottleneck. To address this limitation, we collected EEG data as participants engaged with positive pictures from the International Affective Picture System. Because MDD is associated with blunted positive emotions, we reasoned that this approach would yield highly dissimilar EEG features in healthy versus depressed adults. We extracted three types of relative EEG power features from different frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma) during the emotion task and resting state. We also applied a novel classifier, called a conformal kernel support vector machine (CK-SVM), to try to improve the generalization performance of conventional SVMs. We then compared CK-SVM performance with three machine learning classifiers: linear discriminant analysis (LDA), conventional SVM, and quadratic discriminant analysis. The results from the initial analyses using the LDA classifier on 55 participants (24 MDD, 31 healthy controls) showed that the participant-independent classification accuracy obtained by leave-one-participant-out cross-validation (LOPO-CV) was higher for the EEG recorded during the positive emotion induction versus the resting state for all types of relative EEG power. Furthermore, the CK-SVM classifier achieved higher LOPO-CV accuracy than the other classifiers. The best accuracy (83.64%; sensitivity = 87.50%, specificity = 80.65%) was achieved by the CK-SVM, using seven relative power features extracted from seven electrodes. Overall, combining positive emotion induction with the CK-SVM classifier proved useful for detecting MDD on the basis of EEG signals. In the future, this approach might be used to develop a brain–computer interface system to assist with the detection of MDD in the clinic. Importantly, such a system could be implemented with a low-density electrode montage (seven electrodes), highlighting its practical utility.
