Abstract
Introduction Depressive symptoms have been linked to difficulties in revising established negative beliefs in response to novel positive information. Recent predictive processing accounts have suggested that this bias in belief updating may be related to a blunted processing of positive prediction errors at the neural level. In this proof-of-concept study, pupil dilation in response to unexpected positive emotional information was examined as a psychophysiological marker of an attenuated processing of positive prediction errors associated with depressive symptoms. Methods Participants (N = 34) completed a modified version of the emotional Bias Against Disconfirmatory Evidence (BADE) task in which scenarios initially suggest negative interpretations that are later either confirmed or disconfirmed by additional information. Pupil dilation in response to the confirmatory and disconfirmatory information was recorded. Results Behavioral results showed that depressive symptoms were related to difficulties in revising negative interpretations despite disconfirmatory positive information. The eye tracking results pointed to a reduced pupil response to unexpected positive information among people with elevated depressive symptoms. Discussion Altogether, the present study demonstrates that the adapted emotional BADE task can be appropriate for examining psychophysiological aspects such as changes in pupil size along with behavioral responses. Furthermore, the results suggest that depression may be characterized by deviations in both behavioral (i.e., reduced updating of negative beliefs) and psychophysiological (i.e., decreased pupil dilation) responses to unexpected positive information. Future work should focus on a larger sample including clinically depressed patients to further explore these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Negative symptoms (NS) are a core symptom domain in schizophrenia spectrum disorders and are associated with poorer social and vocational functioning, and with increased likelihood and durations of hospital admission. NS are not well understood, limiting available interventions. However, numerous studies have reported associations between neurocognitive domains and NS severity. Thus, one promising area in understanding NS is in relation to neurocognition. Currently, the specificity of the relationship between NS and neurocognition is unknown, meaning that there is no consensus regarding which neurocognitive domain is most strongly associated with NS. There is a need to systematically examine the relationship between NS and various neurocognitive domains within study samples. METHODS A systematic search of Ovid PsycINFO, Ovid MEDLINE and Web of Science was performed for articles published since 2004 (year of MATRICS Consensus publication). Inclusion criteria were: 1) individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, first episode psychosis or clinical high risk 2) assessed all six MATRICS neurocognitive domains (processing speed, attention, working memory, verbal learning & memory, visual learning & memory, reasoning & problem solving), 3) reported correlations between all six MATRICS neurocognitive domains and global NS. A three-level random effects hierarchical meta-analysis was performed to assess the relationship between NS (global, expressive, and experiential dimensions) and the six MATRICS neurocognitive domains. RESULTS 21 studies were included in the review (n = 3619). All MATRICS neurocognitive domains had small significant correlations with global NS (r = -0.16 to -0.20, p < 0.0001). This relationship was significantly moderated by diagnosis and the moderating effect of sex/ gender trended on significance. Analysis of a subset of the studies revealed that MATRICS neurocognitive domains also had small significant correlations with the two NS dimensions, expressive and experiential. Correlations were stronger with the expressive NS dimension. CONCLUSIONS This review is novel in assessing the relationship between multiple neurocognitive domains and NS within the same sample, by synthesizing close to two decades of research. Our results suggest that there is a non-specific relationship between neurocognition and NS, and that expressive NS may have a stronger relationship with neurocognitive functioning-based on the MATRICS classification of neurocognition and the neurocognitive assessments used in the included studies. This has implications on our understanding of NS and neurocognition, as well as their treatments. As we gain better understanding of the directionality of the NS-cognition relationship, it could suggest that NS, particularly in the expressive domain, could be improved by targeting cognition globally or that neurocognitive treatments could be more effective if NS are addressed first. Further implications of these results are discussed.

Abstract
Rumination and its related mental phenomena share associated impairments in cognition, such as executive functions and attentional processes across different clinical conditions (e.g., in psychotic disorders). In recent decades, however, the notion of rumination has been increasingly narrowed to the "self-focused" type in depressive disorders. A closer review of the literature shows that rumination may be construed as a broader process characterized by repetitive thoughts about certain mental contents that interfere with one's daily activities, not only limited to those related to "self". A further examination of the construct of rumination beyond the narrowly focused depressive rumination would help expand intervention opportunities for mental disorders in today's context. We first review the development of the clinical construct of rumination with regard to its historical roots and its roles in psychopathology. This builds the foundation for the introduction of the "Flow Model of Rumination (FMR)", which conceptualizes rumination as a disruption of a smooth flow of mental contents in conscious experience that depends on the coordinated interactions between intention, memory, affect, and external events. The conceptual review concludes with a discussion of the impact of rapid technological advances (such as smartphones) on rumination. Particularly in contemporary societies today, a broader consideration of rumination not only from a cognition viewpoint, but also incorporating a human-device interaction perspective, is necessitated. The implications of the FMR in contemporary mental health practice are discussed.

Abstract
Since multimodal emotion classification in different human states has rarely been studied, this paper explores the emotional mechanisms of the brain functional connectivity networks after emotional stimulation. We devise a multimodal emotion classification method fusing a brain functional connectivity network based on electroencephalography (EEG) and eye gaze (ECFCEG) to study emotional mechanisms. First, the nonlinear phase lag index (PLI) and phase-locked value (PLV) are calculated to construct the multiband brain functional connectivity networks, which are then converted into binary brain networks, and the seven features of the binary brain networks are extracted. At the same time, the features of the eye gaze signals are extracted. Then, a fusion algorithm called kernel canonical correlation analysis, based on feature level and randomization (FRKCCA), is executed for feature-level fusion (FLF) of brain functional connectivity networks and eye gaze. Finally, support vector machines (SVMs) are utilized to classify positive and negative emotions in multiple frequency bands with single modal features and multimodal features. The experimental results demonstrate that multimodal complementary representation properties can effectively improve the accuracy of emotion classification, achieving a classification accuracy of 91.32±1.81%. The classification accuracy of pupil diameter in the valence dimension is higher than that of additional features. In addition, the average emotion classification effect of the valence dimension is preferable to that of arousal. Our findings demonstrate that the brain functional connectivity networks of the right brain exhibit a deficiency. In particular, the information processing ability of the right temporal (RT) and right posterior (RP) regions is weak in the low frequency after emotional stimulation; Conversely, phase synchronization of the brain functional connectivity networks based on PLI is stronger than that of PLV.

Abstract
Recently, researchers have expanded the investigation into attentional biases toward positive stimuli; however, few studies have examined attentional biases toward positive auditory information. In three experiments, the present study employed an emotional spatial cueing task using emotional sounds as cues and auditory stimuli (Experiment 1) or visual stimuli (Experiment 2 and Experiment 3) as targets to explore whether auditory or visual spatial attention could be modulated by positive auditory cues. Experiment 3 also examined the temporal dynamics of cross-modal auditory bias toward positive natural sounds using event-related potentials (ERPs). The behavioral results of the three experiments consistently demonstrated that response times to targets were faster after positive auditory cues than they were after neutral auditory cues in the valid condition, indicating that healthy participants showed a selective auditory attentional bias (Experiment 1) and cross-modal attentional bias (Experiment 2 and Experiment 3) toward positive natural sounds. The results of Experiment 3 showed that N1 amplitudes were more negative after positive sounds than they were after neutral sounds, which further provided electrophysiological evidence that positive auditory information enhances attention at early stages in healthy adults. The results of the experiments performed in the present study suggest that humans exhibit an attentional bias toward positive natural sounds.

Abstract
Background Eye movement abnormality in schizophrenia has been studied for several decades. However, patient differences in eye movements across phases of schizophrenia from eye-tracking studies have not been well documented. Aims This pilot study used eye-tracking technology to investigate attentive bias towards interpersonal communication information across different clinical phases of schizophrenia. Methods This study included 78 persons at clinical high risk (CHR) for schizophrenia, 68 first-episode (FEZ) patients, and 39 chronically ill patients from the Shanghai At Risk for Psychosis Extending Project (SHARP Extending cohort) as well as 74 healthy controls (HCs). The experiment was an unguided-viewing task composed of 24 trials showing three types of pictures which varied in the degree of interpersonal communication. Type 1 was a scenery picture without people, type 2 was a picture with four people not communicating, and type 3 was a picture with four people communicating. We used two measures: (1) initial fixation duration and (2) total fixation duration. Results A ratio for both measures was calculated between measures for pictures with more or less interpersonal communication. The ratio of initial fixation duration for pictures with people communicating versus pictures with people not communicating was lowest in chronically ill patients (0.13 (0.34))compared with HCs (0.31 (0.36)), FEZ patients (0.31 (0.46)), and CHR patients (0.36 (0.42)). The difference in the ratios of initial fixation duration for type 2 and type 3 pictures was also significant for female participants (HCs vs chronically ill patients, t=2.706, p=0.009; CHR patients vs chronically ill patients, t=4.079, p<0.001). In addition, the ratio of initial fixation duration on pictures with people not communicating versus pictures without people negatively correlated with participants’ high-risk symptoms (r=−0.35, p=0.002) among the CHR group and also correlated with the negative symptom subscore on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) among chronically ill patients (r=−0.33, p=0.037). The ratio of initial fixation duration between type 1 and type 3 pictures was associated with PANSS negative symptoms only in female patients with schizophrenia (r=−0.46, p=0.004). Conclusions These findings suggest an altered attentive bias towards pictures with a high degree of interpersonal communication information across different clinical phases in schizophrenia. The ratio of initial attentive orienting was associated with negative symptoms in female patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Facial emotion identification (FEI) deficits are associated with impaired social functioning in persons living with schizophrenia (PLwS), but the research on emotion-specific FEI deficits remains inconclusive. Furthermore, existing studies on FEI deficits are limited by their small sample sizes. We performed a meta-analysis of studies comparing the FEI abilities between Chinese PLwS and healthy controls in terms of the six basic facial emotions (happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, anger, and surprise), as well as contempt, calmness, and neutral facial expressions. METHODS Major Chinese- and English-language databases were searched to retrieve case-control studies that compared the FEI task performance between Chinese PLwS and healthy controls (HCs) and reported the emotion-specific correct identification scores for PLwS and HCs. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Case-control Studies ("JBI checklist," hereafter) was used to assess the risk of bias (RoB) of the included studies. Statistical analysis was performed using the "meta" package of R 4.1.2. RESULTS Twenty-three studies with a total of 28 case-control cohorts and 1,894 PLwS and 1,267 HCs were included. The RoB scores of the included studies ranged from two to seven. PLwS had statistically significantly lower FEI scores than HCs and the corresponding emotion-specific pooled standard mean differences (95% confidence intervals) were -0.69 (-0.88, -0.50) for happiness, -0.88 (-1.12, -0.63) for sadness, -1.44 (-1.83, -1.06) for fear, -1.18 (-1.60, -0.76) for disgust, -0.91 (-1.24, -0.57) for anger, -1.09 (-1.39, -0.78) for surprise, -0.26 (-0.51, -0.01) for contempt, -0.31 (-0.52, -0.09) for calmness, and -0.42 (-0.65, -0.18) for neutral. In the analyses of sources of heterogeneity, drug-naïve status, clinical setting, positive and negative psychotic symptoms, and RoB were significant moderators of the magnitudes of FEI deficits. CONCLUSIONS Chinese PLwS have significant FEI impairments in terms of recognizing the six basic facial emotions, contempt, calmness, and neutral emotions, and the magnitude of impairment varies depending on the type of emotion, clinical characteristics, and the level of RoB of the study. It is necessary to consider the characteristics of FEI deficits and the clinical moderators in the FEI deficits to develop remediation strategies targeting FEI deficits in schizophrenia.

Abstract
Attentional biases to threatening stimuli have been suggested to play a key role in the onset and course of schizophrenia. However, current research has not completely demonstrated this assumption. The aim of this eye-tracking study was to shed light on the underlying psychological mechanisms of schizophrenia by examining the attentional processing of socio-emotional information. Forty-four individuals with schizophrenia and 47 healthy controls were assessed in a 3-s free-viewing task with a social scene (i.e., happy, threatening, or neutral) in competition with a non-social one to determine the effects of emotional information on the different stages of the attentional processing. The location and latency of initial fixations (i.e., initial orienting), the firs-pass fixations and gaze duration (i.e., attentional engagement), and the percentage of total duration and total fixations (i.e., attentional maintenance) were analyzed. It was found that the schizophrenia group showed longer first-pass gaze duration, as well as higher percentage of total fixations and total duration toward threatening scenes in relation to the non-social ones, compared to controls. Therefore, an attentional bias toward threatening scenes in schizophrenia was found in the attentional maintenance and engagement, but not in the initial orienting of attention. Of note, the threat-related attentional bias was not associated with positive symptoms of schizophrenia. These findings offer empirical support to affective-information processing models stating that threatening information may confer psychological vulnerability to develop schizophrenia. Moreover, the results can improve psychological treatments, such as attentional bias modification paradigms or cognitive-behavior interventions managing maladaptive schemas related to threat.
