Co-Management of Sewage Sludge and Other Organic Wastes: A Scandinavian Case Study

Wastewater and sewage sludge contain organic matter that can be valorized through conversion into energy and/or green chemicals. Moreover, resource recovery from these wastes has become the new focus of wastewater management, to develop more sustainable processes in a circular economy approach. The aim of this review was to analyze current sewage sludge management systems in Scandinavia with respect to resource recovery, in combination with other organic wastes. As anaerobic digestion (AD) was found to be the common sludge treatment approach in Scandinavia, different available organic municipal and industrial wastes were identified and compared, to evaluate the potential for expanding the resource recovery by anaerobic co-digestion. Additionally, a full-scale case study of co-digestion, as strategy for optimization of the anaerobic digestion treatment, was presented for each country, together with advanced biorefinery approaches to wastewater treatment and resource recovery.

Towards a new biological control approach for Photorhabdus temperata bioinsecticide production through the bioconversion of Tunisian industrial wastewater

A novel bioconversion approach of Tunisian wastewater to low-cost Photorhabdus temperata bioinsecticide is presented in this study. Our results showed that when cultured on the food industry wastewater (WS4), P. temperata cells exhibited oral toxicity of about 42%, which is the same as those cultured in complex medium (CM), used as control. Moreover, variants small colony polymorphism (Vsm) of the strain K122 was completely avoided after a prolonged incubation. However, viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state was enhanced with the maximum colony-forming units (CFU) count of 9 × 106 cells/mL obtained after 48 h of incubation in the WS4. According to flow cytometry analysis, almost 100% of P. temperata cells were viable until 48 h of incubation. The appearance of propidium iodide (PI) positively stained cells was observed after a prolonged incubation with a maximum of 17% of damaged cells in WS1. In order to follow the progress of P. temperata fermentation process carried out in industrial wastewater, we established for the first time, the mathematical relationship between total cell counts, CFU counts and oral toxicity of P. temperata strain K122. Indeed, irrespective of the medium used, the relationship between CFU count and total cell count followed a power law. Additionally, when plotting CFU count, or total cell count against toxicity, a semi-log linear relationship was obtained. Our results proved the efficiency of this bioconversion approach to produce bioinsecticide based on the entomopathogenic bacterium P. temperata, with practical benefits in terms of cost production and wastewater management.

Cost-effective production of Bacillus thuringiensis biopesticides by solid-state fermentation using wastewater sludge: effects of heavy metals

This study demonstrated the feasibility to produce Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki (Btk) based biopesticides using wastewater sludge as raw materials under solid-state fermentation (SSF). More than 10(10) CFU/g viable cells of Btk were obtained using sludge or its mixture with agricultural wastes. This study well considered the effect of heavy metals on Btk growth and their changes of chemical speciation caused by SSF. The IC(50) (concentration causing 50% inhibition in total cell biomass) for Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III) on Btk were determined to be 227, 82, 15 and 263 mg/L, respectively. Exposure to 150 mg/L of Cu(II) severely reduced the amount and size of toxin crystals, which decreased the endotoxin synthesis and entomotoxicity potency of Btk cells. Using Tessier's sequential extraction procedure, the exchangeable heavy metals in sludge were shown to be transformed into residual fractions after SSF, and thus significantly reduced their bioavailability and potential environmental risks.

Mosquito biolarvicide production by sequential fermentation with dual strains of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis and Bacillus sphaericus using sewage sludge

This study demonstrated the bioconversion of sewage sludge into a composite biolarvicide for mosquito control based on sequential fermentation with dual strains of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti) and Bacillus sphaericus (Bs). Results showed that sewage sludge was a suitable fermentation substrate for supporting growth, sporulation and mosquitocidal proteins synthesis by Bti and Bs. Through sequential fermentation with dual strains, a 10-L bench-scale fermentor was capable of producing Bti and Bs at a cell concentration of 2.1×10(9) and 6.8×10(8) CFU/mL, respectively. Such sequential fermentation can save half of raw materials and energy consumption comparing with the sludge fermentation with single strain. The toxic activity and persistence of the composite biolarvicide against mosquito larvae in the polluted waters were enhanced by the increased toxin complexity and synergistic interactions. This study, for the first time, validates the technical feasibility of using sewage sludge to produce a cost-effective composite biolarvicide based on Bti and Bs.

Physico-chemical pre-treatment and biotransformation of wastewater and wastewater sludge--fate of bisphenol A

Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disrupting compound largely used in plastic and paper industry, ends up in aquatic systems via wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) among other sources. The identification and quantification of BPA in wastewater (WW) and wastewater sludge (WWS) is of major interest to assess the endocrine activity of treated effluent discharged into the environment. Many treatment technologies, including various pre-treatment methods, such as hydrolysis, Fenton oxidation, peroxidation, ultrasonication and ozonation have been developed in order to degrade BPA in WW and WWS and for the production of WWS based value-added products (VAPs). WWS based VAPs, such as biopesticides, bioherbicides, biofertilizers, bioplastics and enzymes are low cost biological alternatives that can compete with chemicals or other cost intensive biological products in the current markets. However, this field application is disputable due to the presence of these organic compounds which has been discussed with a perspective of simultaneous degradation. The pre-treatment produces an impact on rheology as well as value-addition which has been reviewed in this paper. Various analytical techniques available for the detection of BPA in WW and WWS are also discussed. Presence of heavy metals and possible thermodynamical behavior of the compound in WW and WWS can have major impact on BPA removal, which is also included in the review.
