Effects of pre-treatment and bioaugmentation strategies on the anaerobic digestion of chicken feathers

Bioenergy production from chicken feather waste by anaerobic digestion and bioelectrochemical systems

BACKGROUND

Poultry feather waste has a potential for bioenergy production because of its high protein content. This research explored the use of chicken feather hydrolysate for methane and hydrogen production via anaerobic digestion and bioelectrochemical systems, respectively. Solid state fermentation of chicken waste was conducted using a recombinant strain of Bacillus subtilis DB100 (p5.2).

RESULTS

In the anaerobic digestion, feather hydrolysate produced maximally 0.67 Nm3 CH4/kg feathers and 0.85 mmol H2/day.L concomitant to COD removal of 86% and 93%, respectively. The bioelectrochemical systems used were microbial fuel and electrolysis cells. In the first using a microbial fuel cell, feather hydrolysate produced electricity with a maximum cell potential of 375 mV and a current of 0.52 mA. In the microbial electrolysis cell, the hydrolysate enhanced the hydrogen production rate to 7.5 mmol/day.L, with a current density of 11.5 A/m2 and a power density of 9.26 W/m2.

CONCLUSIONS

The data indicated that the sustainable utilization of keratin hydrolysate to produce electricity and biohydrogen via bioelectrical chemical systems is feasible. Keratin hydrolysate can produce electricity and biofuels through an integrated aerobic-anaerobic fermentation system.

A fully green sample preparation method for synthetic antioxidants determination in edible oils based on natural feather fiber-supported liquid extraction

The current study proposed a novel feather fiber-supported liquid extraction (FF-SLE) method for extracting analytes from oil samples. The natural feather fibers were used as the oil support material and directly loaded in the plastic tube of a disposable syringe to construct the low-cost extraction device (∼0.5 CNY). The edible oil without any pretreatment including dilution was added directly to the extraction device, followed by the addition of the green extraction solvent of ethanol. As an example, the proposed method was applied to extract nine synthetic antioxidants from edible oils. The optimized extraction conditions for processing 0.5 g of oil were obtained when the syringe dimension was 5 mL, the extraction solvent was 0.5 mL of ethanol, the amount of feather fibers was 200 mg of duck feather fibers and the static extraction time was 10 min. The applications to seven kinds of feathers and seven kinds of edible oils all indicated the excellent oil removal efficiencies (>98.0%). Combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet, a quantification method was validated with satisfied linearity (R²≥0.994), accuracy (95.8-114.6%) and precision (≤8.3%) with the limits of detection ranging from 50 to 100 ng/g. The proposed FF-SLE method was simple, effective, convenient, low-cost, green and environmental-friendly for the extraction of analytes from oil samples prior to instrument analysis.

Use of additives to improve collective biogas plant performances: A comprehensive review

Nowadays, anaerobic digestion (AD) is being increasingly encouraged to increase the production of biogas and thus of biomethane. Due to the high diversity among feedstocks used, the variability of operating parameters and the size of collective biogas plants, different incidents and limitations may occur (e.g., inhibitions, foaming, complex rheology). To improve performance and overcome these limitations, several additives can be used. This literature review aims to summarize the effects of the addition of various additives in co-digestion continuous or semi-continuous reactors to fit as much as possible with collective biogas plant challenges. The addition of (i) microbial strains or consortia, (ii) enzymes and (iii) inorganic additives (trace elements, carbon-based materials) in digester is analyzed and discussed. Several challenges associated with the use of additives for AD process at collective biogas plant scale requiring further research work are highlighted: elucidation of mechanisms, dosage and combination of additives, environmental assessment, economic feasibility, etc.

Chicken Feather Waste Hydrolysate as a Superior Biofertilizer in Agroindustry

Billions of tons of keratinous waste in the form of feathers, antlers, bristles, claws, hair, hoofs, horns, and wool are generated by different industries and their demolition causes environmental deterioration. Chicken feathers have 92% keratin that can be a good source of peptides, amino acids, and minerals. Traditional methods of feather hydrolysis require large energy inputs, and also reduce the content of amino acids and net protein utilization values. Biological treatment of feathers with keratinolytic microbes is a feasible and environmental favorable preference for the formulation of hydrolysate that can be used as bioactive peptides, protein supplement, livestock feed, biofertilizer, etc. The presence of amino acids, soluble proteins, and peptides in hydrolysate facilitates the growth of microbes in rhizosphere that promotes the uptake and utilization of nutrients from soil. Application of hydrolysate enhances water holding capacity, C/N ratio, and mineral content of soil. The plant growth promoting activities of hydrolysate potentiates its possible use in organic farming, and improves soil ecosystem and microbiota. This paper reviews the current scenario on the methods available for management of keratinous waste, nutritional quality of hydrolysate generated using keratinolytic microbes, and its possible application as plant growth promoter in agroindustry.

Effect of bioaugmentation on digestate metal concentrations in anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge

This study examined the influence of bioaugmentation on metal concentrations (aluminum, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, molybdenum, nickel and zinc) in anaerobically digested sewage sludge. To improve the digestion efficiency, bioaugmentation with a mixture of wild-living Archaea and Bacteria (MAB) from Yellowstone National Park, USA, was used. The total concentration of all metals was higher in the digestate than in the feedstock. During anaerobic digestion, the percent increase in the concentration of most of metals was slightly higher in the bioaugmented runs than in the un-augmented runs, but these differences were not statistically significant. However, the percent increase in cadmium and cobalt concentration was significantly higher in the bioaugmented runs than in the un-augmented runs. At MAB doses of 9 and 13% v/v, cadmium concentration in the digestate was 211 and 308% higher than in the feedstock, respectively, and cobalt concentration was 138 and 165%, respectively. Bioaugmentation increased over 4 times the percentage of Pseudomonas sp. in the biomass that are able to efficiently accumulate metals by both extracellular adsorption and intracellular uptake. Biogas production was not affected by the increased metal concentrations. In conclusion, bioaugmentation increased the concentration of metals in dry sludge, which means that it could potentially have negative effects on the environment.

Beyond plucking: Feathers bioprocessing into valuable protein hydrolysates

The livestock production and subsequent processing of meat results in huge quantities of solid waste such as viscera, bones, skin and keratin-rich materials, including feathers, hair, wool, claws and hooves. In particular, the continuous growth of poultry industry generates massive amounts of feathers as major waste material. The conversion of such by-products into materials with increased value has been studied. Hydrothermal, chemical or biological approaches have been investigated to achive effective conversion of highly recalcitrant proteins that are abundant in animal waste, but increasing interest is devoted to the development of biotechnological methods. The processing of feathers and other by-products into protein hydrolysates may have industrial and commercial significance. Therefore, this review comprehensively addresses the postulated applications of hydrolysates obtained from keratinous biomasses. Examples on the utilization of feather hydrolysates as organic soil fertilizers, feed ingredients, cosmetic formulations and biofuel production are described in the literature. Microbial feather hydrolysis can generate bioactive peptides as well. The use of protein-rich waste from meat industry to produce hydrolysates with biological activities constitutes a point of utmost interest for development of functional ingredients with elevated value.

Long-Term Storage and Use of Artificially Immobilized Anaerobic Sludge as a Powerful Biocatalyst for Conversion of Various Wastes Including Those Containing Xenobiotics to Biogas

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the possibilities of anaerobic sludge cells immobilized into poly(vinyl alcohol) cryogel for the methanogenic conversion of various lignocellulosic waste and other media containing antibiotics (ampicillin, kanamycin, benzylpenicillin) or pesticides (chlorpyrifos or methiocarb and its derivatives). It was established that the immobilized cells of the anaerobic consortium can be stored frozen for at least three years while preserving a high level of metabolic activity. The cells after the long-term storage in an immobilized and frozen state were applied for the methanogenesis of a wide number of wastes, and an increase in both methane yield and methane portion in the produced biogas as compared to the conventionally used suspended anaerobic sludge cells, was ensured. It was shown that the “additional” introduction of bacterial Clostridium acetobutylicum, Pseudomonas sp., Enterococcus faecalis cells (also immobilized using same support) improves characteristics of methanogenesis catalyzed by immobilized anaerobic sludge.

Anaerobic treatability of liquid residue from wet oxidation of sewage sludge

Wet Oxidation (WO) of sewage sludge is a chemical oxidation of sludge at high temperatures and pressures by means of an oxygen-containing gas. The liquid stream originated by WO is easily biodegradable, and therefore, the recirculation to the biological Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) may be a feasible solution. However, the WO effluent has a residual organic and nitrogen content so that its treatment may be required when the receiving WWTP has no surplus treatment capacity left. The aim of this research was the assessment of the anaerobic treatability of the WO liquid residue, in order to reduce the organic load to be recirculated to the WWTP, simultaneously promoting energy recovery. For this purpose, the liquid residue obtained during full scale WO tests on two different types of sludge was submitted to anaerobic digestion in a continuous flow pilot reactor (V = 5 L). Furthermore, batch tests were carried out in order to evaluate possible inhibition factors. Experimental results showed that, after the start-up/acclimation period (~130 days), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal efficiency was stably around 60% for about 120 days, despite the change in operating conditions. In the last phase of the experimental activity, COD removal reached 70% under the following treatment conditions: Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) = 20 days, Volumetric Organic Loading Rate (VOLR) = 0.868 kg COD/m(3)/day, Organic Loading Rate per Volatile Suspended Solids (OLRvss) = 0.078 kg COD/kg VSS/day, temperature (T) = 36.5 °C, pH = 8. Energy balance calculation demonstrated anaerobic treatment sustainability.
