Membrane fouling behavior in anaerobic baffled membrane bioreactor under static operating condition

Operation of a modified anaerobic baffled reactor coupled with a membrane bioreactor for the treatment of municipal wastewater in Taiwan

A modified anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) combined with a submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) was applied to treat municipal wastewater. The performance of this process was examined in terms of the removal of organic matter, suspended solids, turbidity and nitrogen. The raw wastewater was fed to the 105 L ABR and then the treated effluent was driven to a 58 L MBR equipped with a submerged hollow fibre ultrafiltration membrane module. The integrated modified ABR-MBR process resulted in the complete removal of total suspended solids (TSS) and in very high chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal (93.3 ± 3.8%). Furthermore, the recycling of mixed liquor from the MBR to the modified ABR resulted in some denitrification occurring in the first compartment of the ABR, resulting in 53 ± 6% removal of nitrogen by the integrated process. The membrane flux was stable and above 20 L/m²h. Membrane examination at the nanoscale indicated the deposition of small particles on the surface of the membranes.

Entrapped cells-based-anaerobic membrane bioreactor treating domestic wastewater: Performances, fouling, and bacterial community structure

A laboratory scale study on treatment performances and fouling of entrapped cells-based-anaerobic membrane bioreactor (E-AnMBR) in comparison with suspended cells-based-bioreactor (S-AnMBR) treating domestic wastewater was conducted. The difference between E-AnMBR and S-AnMBR was the uses of cells entrapped in phosphorylated polyvinyl alcohol versus planktonic cells. Bulk organic removal efficiencies by the two AnMBRs were comparable. Lower concentrations of suspended biomass, bound extracellular polymeric substances and soluble microbial products in E-AnMBR resulted in less fouling compared to S-AnMBR. S-AnMBR provided 7 days of operation time versus 11 days for E-AnMBR before chemical cleaning was required. The less frequent chemical cleaning potentially leads to a longer membrane life-span for E-AnMBR compared to S-AnMBR. Phyla Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes and Acidobacteria were dominant in cake sludge from both AnMBRs but their abundances were different between the two AnMBRs, suggesting influence of cell entrapment on the bacteria community.

Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor Effluent Reuse: A Review of Microbial Safety Concerns

Broad and increasing interest in sustainable wastewater treatment has led a paradigm shift towards more efficient means of treatment system operation. A key aspect of improving overall sustainability is the potential for direct wastewater effluent reuse. Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) have been identified as an attractive option for producing high quality and nutrient-rich effluents during the treatment of municipal wastewaters. The introduction of direct effluent reuse does, however, raise several safety concerns related to its application. Among those concerns are the microbial threats associated with pathogenic bacteria as well as the emerging issues associated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the potential for proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes. Although there is substantial research evaluating these topics from the perspectives of anaerobic digestion and membrane bioreactors separately, little is known regarding how AnMBR systems can contribute to pathogen and antibiotic resistance removal and propagation in wastewater effluents. The aim of this review is to provide a current assessment of existing literature on anaerobic and membrane-based treatment systems as they relate to these microbial safety issues and utilize this assessment to identify areas of potential future research to evaluate the suitability of AnMBRs for direct effluent reuse.
