A comprehensive review of enhanced CO2 capture using activated carbon derived from biomass feedstock

The increasing level of atmospheric CO2 requires the urgent development of effective capture technologies. This comprehensive review thoroughly examines various methods for the synthesis of carbon materials, modification techniques for converting biomass feedstock into carbon materials and pivotal factors impacting their properties. The novel aspect of this review is its in-depth comparison of how these modifications specifically affect the pore structure and surface area together with the exploration of the mechanism underlying the enhancement of CO2 adsorption performance. Additionally, this review addresses research gaps and provides recommendations for future studies concerning the advantages and drawbacks of CO2 adsorbents and their prospects for commercialization and economic feasibility. This article revealed that among the various strategies, template carbonization offers a viable option for providing control of the material pore diameter and structure without additional modification treatments. Optimizing the pore structure of activated carbons, particularly those activated with agents such as KOH and ZnCl2, together with synthesizing hybrid activated carbons using multiple activating agents, is crucial for enhancing their CO2 capture performance. Cost-benefit analysis suggests that biomass-derived activated carbons can significantly meet the escalating demand for CO2 capture materials, offering economic advantages and supporting sustainable waste management.

Cooperative production of monophenolic chemicals and carbon adsorption materials from cascade pyrolysis of acid hydrolysis lignin

A novel cascade pyrolysis upgrading process for acid hydrolysis lignin (AHL), consisting of pyrolysis, catalytic upgrading of pyrolysis vapors, and pyrolysis char, was developed to improve the yield of value-added products (monophenolic chemicals and carbon materials). Pyrolysis of AHL at 450 °C and subsequent catalytic upgrading of pyrolysis vapors over Ni/H-ZSM-5 boosted the concentration of monophenolic chemicals in pyrolysis liquids by 58%. The carbon material prepared from pyrolysis char using KOH as activating agent exhibited a large specific surface area of 2902.5 m2/g and a large total pore volume of 1.45 cm3/g, thus affording good adsorption capacity for methylene blue (824.87 mg/g) and iodine (2333.17 mg/g). Moreover, the cascade pyrolysis upgrading of AHL achieved a yield of 68.52% desired products, which was much higher than the reported results (single production of monophenols and pyrolysis char). In summary, this work provides a potential reference for efficient utilization of lignin in large-scale applications.

Sustainable exploitation and safe utilization of biochar: Multiphase characterization and potential hazard analysis

Pyrolysis temperature determines the multiphase (solid and dissolved) structure of biochar (BC). In this study, the temperature-dependent evolution of characteristics and potential hazards of three crop (cotton, alfalfa, and wheat) residue BC were systematically investigated. The results showed that pyrolysis temperature significantly affected the elemental composition and morphology of BC. A higher pyrolysis temperature led to a higher aromatization and graphitization degree of BC. A numerical relationship between pyrolysis temperature and BC surface properties (functional groups, carbonization degree) was established. Pyrolysis temperature controlled the content, composition, and functional group evolution of BC-derived dissolved organic matter. Although the amount of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in BC was concentrated after pyrolysis, the potentially risk of PTEs significantly decreased. The spin concentration of persistent free radicals in BC prepared at 500 °C was the highest. These findings will hopefully offer comprehensive guidance for sustainable utilization of crop straw and fit-for-purpose exploitation of BC.

A review on lignin pyrolysis: pyrolytic behavior, mechanism, and relevant upgrading for improving process efficiency

Lignin is a promising alternative to traditional fossil resources for producing biofuels due to its aromaticity and renewability. Pyrolysis is an efficient technology to convert lignin to valuable chemicals, which is beneficial for improving lignin valorization. In this review, pyrolytic behaviors of various lignin were included, as well as the pyrolytic mechanism consisting of initial, primary, and charring stages were also introduced. Several parallel reactions, such as demethoxylation, demethylation, decarboxylation, and decarbonylation of lignin side chains to form light gases, major lignin structure decomposition to generate phenolic compounds, and polymerization of active lignin intermediates to yield char, can be observed through the whole pyrolysis process. Several parameters, such as pyrolytic temperature, time, lignin type, and functional groups (hydroxyl, methoxy), were also investigated to figure out their effects on lignin pyrolysis. On the other hand, zeolite-driven lignin catalytic pyrolysis and lignin co-pyrolysis with other hydrogen-rich co-feedings were also introduced for improving process efficiency to produce more aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs). During the pyrolysis process, phenolic compounds and/or AHs can be produced, showing promising applications in biochemical intermediates and biofuel additives. Finally, some challenges and future perspectives for lignin pyrolysis have been discussed.
