Effect of fish waste augmentation on anaerobic co-digestion of sludge with food waste

Novel strategy for efficient energy recovery and pollutant control from sewage sludge and food waste treatment

Considering the high organic matter contents and pollutants in sewage sludge (SS) and food waste (FW), seeking green and effective technology for energy recovery and pollutant control is a big challenge. In this study, we proposed a integrated technology combing SS mass separation by hydrothermal pretreatment, methane production from co-digestion of hydrothermally treated sewage sludge (HSS) centrate and FW, and biochar production from co-pyrolysis of HSS cake and digestate with heavy metal immobilization for synergistic utilization of SS and FW. The results showed that the co-digestion of HSS centrate with FW reduced the NH4+-N concentration and promoted volatile fatty acids conversion, leading to a more robust anaerobic system for better methane generation. Among the co-pyrolysis of HSS cake and digestate, digestate addition improved biochar quality with heavy metals immobilization and toxicity reduction. Following the lab-scale investigation, the pilot-scale verification was successfully performed (except the co-digestion process). The mass and energy balance revealed that the produced methane could supply the whole energy consumption of the integrated system with 26.2 t biochar generation for treating 300 t SS and 120 t FW. This study presents a new strategy and technology validation for synergistic treatment of SS and FW with resource recovery and pollutants control.

Optimization of methane production from solid tuna waste: Thermal pretreatment and co-digestion

Fish canning industries generate large amounts of solid waste during their processing operations, creating a significant environmental challenge. Nonetheless, this waste can be efficiently and sustainably treated through anaerobic digestion. In this study, the potential of biogas production from anaerobic digestion of thermally pretreated and co-digested solid tuna waste was investigated. The thermal pretreatment of raw fish viscera resulted in a 50 % increase in methane yield, with a production of 0.27 g COD-CH4/g COD added. However, this pretreatment did not lead to a significant increase in biogas production for cooked tuna viscera. When non-thermally pretreated raw viscera was tested, a large accumulation of volatile fatty acids and long chain fatty acids was observed, with levels reaching 21 and 6 g COD/L, respectively. On the other hand, anaerobic co-digestion of cooked tuna viscera with fat waste significantly enhanced methane production, achieving 0.87 g COD-CH4/g COD added. In contrast, co-digestion of cooked tuna viscera with dairy waste and sewage sludge resulted in notably lower yields of 0.36 and 0.46 g COD-CH4/g COD added, respectively. These results may be related to the C/N ratio, which was found to be within the optimal range for anaerobic digestion only in the tuna and fat waste co-digestion assay.

Effects of Co-Digestion Sludge Application on Soil Productivity

Anaerobic digestion and agricultural use of sewage sludge are effective methods to treat and dispose of sewage sludge, respectively. Then, the anaerobic digested sewage sludge is applied in agricultural land and the improvement of soil properties can be expected. In this study, with the purpose of evaluating the potential of co-digestion sludge for agricultural use, plot experiments with two vegetable species (radish and Chinese cabbage) and three application dosages were carried out in a short term of six months. Focus was on soil physical properties, soil nutrient change and plant growth responses during the whole process. Results showed that application of co-digestion sludge had little effect on soil physical properties, including the bulk density, porosity, capillary porosity and non-capillary porosity. However, after the application of co-digestion sludge, the maximum increase in content of organic matter, total nitrogen, hydrolysable nitrogen, total phosphorus and available phosphorus in soil reached 51%, 125%, 212%, 15% and 87%, respectively, which supplied the available nutrients quickly and continuously. The application of co-digestion sludge promoted the growth of radish and Chinese cabbage, which was observed through increase of the leaf, root biomass and plants height. Consequently, co-digestion sludge has a good application prospect for improving soil productivity as fertilizer.
