Abstract
The hydrolysis phase is recognized as the bottleneck in the anaerobic conversion of food waste. This study firstly investigates an innovative surfactant-enhanced thermal hydrolysis (STH) process, using alkyl polyglucoside (APG), a bio-based surfactant, in combination with improved response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize pretreatment conditions for volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production in anaerobic digestion (AD) of food waste. The synergistic effects of the coupled technology and its impact on acid production were explored, and the contributions of the pretreatment techniques were quantified. Results show that STH significantly enhances the solubilization of organic matter and VFAs yield. Under optimal conditions (110 °C, 0.005 g APG/g TSS), fermentation time is reduced in half, and VFAs production increases to 33.72 g COD/L. Overall, this research solidifies the substantial potential of STH in improving the solubilization, hydrolysis, and VFAs production efficiency from food waste and sets the stage for its industrial-scale application in VFA production, offering valuable insights into optimizing food waste resource utilization.

Abstract
Large amounts of waste activated sludge are generated daily worldwide, posing significant environmental challenges. Anaerobic fermentation is a promising method for sludge disposal, but it has two technical bottlenecks: the availability of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)-producing substrates and SCFAs consumption by methanogenesis. This study proposes a pretreatment strategy combining sodium percarbonate (SPC) and magnetite (Fe3O4) to address these issues. Under optimized conditions (20 mg Fe3O4/g TSS and 15 mg SPC/g TSS), SCFAs production increased to 3244.10 ± 216.31 mg COD/L, about 3.06 times the control (1057.29 ± 35.06 mg COD/L) and surpassing reported treatments. The combined pretreatment enhanced the disruption of extracellular polymeric substances, increased the release of biodegradable matters, improved acidogenesis enzyme activities, and inhibited methanogenesis. Additionally, it increased NH4+-N release in favor of the recovery of phosphorus from sludge residual. This study demonstrates an efficient pretreatment for high SCFAs production and resource recovery from WAS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The escalating global concerns about food waste and the imperative need for sustainable practices have fuelled a burgeoning interest in the valorization of food waste. This comprehensive review delves into various technologies employed for converting food waste into valuable bio-based products. The article surveys individual technologies, ranging from traditional to cutting-edge methods, highlighting their respective mechanisms, advantages, and challenges. SCOPE AND APPROACH The exploration encompasses enzymatic processes, microbial fermentation, anaerobic digestion, and emerging technologies such as pyrolysis and hydrothermal processing. Each technology's efficacy in transforming food waste into bio-based products such as biofuels, enzymes, organic acids, prebiotics, and biopolymers is critically assessed. The review also considers the environmental and economic implications of these technologies, shedding light on their sustainability and scalability. The article discusses the role of technological integration and synergies in creating holistic approaches for maximizing the valorization potential of food waste. Key finding and conclusion: This review consolidates current knowledge on the valorization of food waste, offering a comprehensive understanding of individual technologies and their contributions to the sustainable production of bio-based products. The synthesis of information presented here aims to guide researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders in making informed decisions to address the global challenge of food waste while fostering a circular and eco-friendly economy.

Abstract
High value-added products from organic waste fermentation have garnered increasing concern in modern society. VFAs are short-chain fatty acids, produced as intermediate products during the anaerobic fermentation of organic matter. VFAs can serve as an essential organic carbon source to produce substitutable fuels, microbial fats and oils, and synthetic biodegradable plastics et al. Extracting VFAs from the fermentation broths is a challenging task as the composition of suspensions is rather complex. In this paper, a comprehensive review of methods for VFAs production, extraction and separation are provided. Firstly, the methods to enhance VFAs production and significant operating parameters are briefly reviewed. Secondly, the evaluation and detailed discussion of various VFAs extraction and separation technologies, including membrane separation, complex extraction, and adsorption methods, are presented, highlighting their specific advantages and limitations. Finally, the challenges encountered by different separation technologies and novel approaches to enhance process performance are highlighted, providing theoretical guidance for recycling VFAs from organic wastes efficiently.

Abstract
The use of different types of chemicals in upstream oilfield operations is critical for optimizing the different operations involved in hydrocarbon exploration and production. Surfactants are a type chemical that are applied in various upstream operations, such as drilling, fracturing, and enhanced oil recovery. However, due to their nonbiodegradability and toxicity, the use of synthetic surfactants has raised environmental concerns. Natural surfactants have emerged because of the hunt for sustainable and environmentally suitable substitutes. This Review discusses the role of natural surfactants in upstream operations as well as their benefits and drawbacks. The Review discusses the basic characteristics of surfactants, their classification, and the variables that affect their performance. Finally, the Review examines the possible applications of natural surfactants in the upstream oil sector and identifies areas that require further research.

Abstract
Surfactant-assisted pretreatment has been widely reported to improve the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose by promoting removal of xylan and lignin. Hence, this work innovatively proposed the use of sodium lignosulfonate (SL) as an additive of alkaline pretreatment (AP), and evaluated its influence on the cellulosic digestibility of wheat straw (WS). The results displayed that the maximum of 72-h cellulosic digestibility could reach 83.5% as 15 g/L SL was introduced to the AP process (SAP), while the cellulosic digestibility of hydrothermal and alkaline pretreated WS was only 63.6% and 70.2%, respectively. These increments were subsequently attributed to the improvement of 6.5% xylan and 26.8% lignin accelerated by SAP, resulting in positive changes in structural characteristics such as accessibility, specific surface area, and cellulosic crystalline structure. The utilization of lignin-based surfactants in pretreatment has realized the economic feasibility of lignocellulosic biorefining and broadened the application prospect of surfactants.
