Preparation of graphene nanoplatelet-titanate nanotube composite and its advantages over the two single components as biosensor immobilization materials

A solid-state electrochemiluminescence aptasensor for β-lactoglobulin using Ru-AuNP/GNP/Naf nanocomposite-modified printed sensor

An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor for the detection of the milk protein allergen β-lactoglobulin (β-LG) using nanocomposite as luminophore was fabricated. The Ru-AuNPs/GNP/Naf complex was formed by combining the Rubpy₃²⁺-AuNPs complex (Ru-AuNPs), prepared by modifying the negatively charged surface of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with positively charged Rubpy₃²⁺ through electrostatic interactions and the graphene nanoplatelets-Nafion (GNP/Naf) at a ratio of 2:1. The nanocomposite was coated on the surface of the screen-printed electrode (SPCE) through the film-forming properties of Nafion. A layer of chitosan (CS) was coated onto this modified electrode, and later amine-terminated β-LG aptamers were covalently attached to the CS/Ru-AuNP/GNP/Naf via glutaraldehyde (GLUT) cross-linking. When β-LG was incubated with the aptasensor, a subsequent decrease in ECL intensity was recorded. Under the optimal conditions, the ECL intensity of the aptasensor changed linearly with the logarithmic concentration of β-LG, in the range 0.1 to 1000 pg/ml, and the detection limit was 0.02 pg/mL (3σ/m). The constructed aptasensor displayed simple and fast determination of β-LG with excellent reproducibility, stability, and high specificity. Additionally, the proposed ECL aptasensor displayed high recoveries (92.5-112%) and low coefficients of variation (1.6-7.8%), when β-LG fortified samples were analyzed. Integrating Ru-AuNPs/GNP/Naf nanocomposite in the ECL aptasensor paves the way towards a cost-effective and sensitive detection of the milk allergen β-LG.

MoS2 Nanoparticles Decorating Titanate-Nanotube Surfaces: Combined Microscopy, Spectroscopy, and Catalytic Studies

MoS2/TNTs composites have been obtained by impregnation of titanate nanotubes (TNTs) with a centrifuged solution of nanosized MoS2 particles in isopropyl alcohol (IPA). The characterization has been performed by combining UV-vis-NIR, Raman, AFM, and HRTEM analyses, before and after impregnation. HRTEM images show that the contact between single-layer MoS2 nanoparticles and the support is efficient, so justifying the decoration concept. The volatility of IPA solvent allows the preparation of composites at low temperature and free of carbonaceous impurities. MoS2 nanoparticles have strong excitonic transitions, which are only slightly shifted with respect to the bulk because of quantum size effects. Concentrations of MoS2, less than 0.1 wt %, are enough to induce strong absorption in the visible. Photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) has been performed on TNTs and MoS2/TNTs to verify the effect of the presence of MoS2. The first layer of adsorbed MB is consumed first, followed by clustered MB in the second and more external layers. The presence of low concentrated MoS2 nanoparticles does not substantially alter the photocatalytic properties of TNTs. This result is due to poor overlapping between the high frequency of MoS2 C, D excitonic transitions and the TNTs band gap transition.

Graphene based enzymatic bioelectrodes and biofuel cells

The excellent electrical conductivity and ease of functionalization make graphene a promising material for use in enzymatic bioelectrodes and biofuel cells. Enzyme based biofuel cells have attracted substantial interest due to their potential to harvest energy from organic materials. This review provides an overview of the functional properties and applications of graphene in the construction of biofuel cells as alternative power sources. The review covers the current state-of-the-art research in graphene based nanomaterials (physicochemical properties and surface functionalities), the role of these parameters in enhancing electron transfer, the stability and activity of immobilized enzymes, and how enhanced power density can be achieved. Specific examples of enzyme immobilization methods, enzyme loading, stability and function on graphene, functionalized graphene and graphene based nanocomposite materials are discussed along with their advantages and limitations. Finally, a critical evaluation of the performance of graphene based enzymatic biofuel cells, the current status, challenges and future research needs are provided.

Current Trends in Nanomaterial-Based Amperometric Biosensors

The last decade has witnessed an intensive research effort in the field of electrochemical sensors, with a particular focus on the design of amperometric biosensors for diverse analytical applications. In this context, nanomaterial integration in the construction of amperometric biosensors may constitute one of the most exciting approaches. The attractive properties of nanomaterials have paved the way for the design of a wide variety of biosensors based on various electrochemical detection methods to enhance the analytical characteristics. However, most of these nanostructured materials are not explored in the design of amperometric biosensors. This review aims to provide insight into the diverse properties of nanomaterials that can be possibly explored in the construction of amperometric biosensors.

Graphene-based nanobiocatalytic systems: recent advances and future prospects

Graphene-based nanomaterials are particularly useful nanostructured materials that show great promise in biotechnology and biomedicine. Owing to their unique structural features, exceptional chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties, and their ability to affect the microenvironment of biomolecules, graphene-based nanomaterials are suitable for use in various applications, such as immobilization of enzymes. We present the current advances in research on graphene-based nanomaterials used as novel scaffolds to build robust nanobiocatalytic systems. Their catalytic behavior is affected by the nature of enzyme-nanomaterial interactions and, thus, the availability of methods to couple enzymes with nanomaterials is an important issue. We discuss the implications of such interactions along with future prospects and possible challenges in this rapidly developing area.
