Flexible Epidermal Sensor Power Systems: Innovations in Multidimensional Materials and Biomedical Applications

Epidermal sensors are pivotal components of next-generation wearable technologies. They offer transformative potential in health monitoring, motion tracking, and biomedical applications. This potential stems from their ultra-thin design, skin compatibility, and ability to continuously detect physiological signals. The long-term functionality relies on advanced power systems balancing flexibility, energy density, and environmental resilience. This review highlights four key power strategies: chemical batteries, biofuel cells, environmental energy harvesters, and wireless power transfer. Breakthroughs in multidimensional materials address challenges in ion transport, catalytic stability, and mechanical durability. Structural innovations mitigate issues like dendrite growth and enzyme degradation. These systems enable applications spanning biomarker analysis, motion sensing, and environmental monitoring. By integrating these advancements, this review concludes with a prospective outlook on future directions for epidermal sensor power systems.

New trends in potentiometric sensors: From design to clinical and biomedical applications

Potentiometry, a well-established electrochemical technique, provides a powerful and versatile method for the sensitive and selective measurement of a variety of analytes by measuring the potential difference between two electrodes, allowing for a direct and rapid readout of ion concentrations. This makes it a valuable tool in a variety of applications including industry, agriculture, forensics, medical, environmental assessment, and pharmaceutical drug analysis, therefore it has received significant attention from the scientific community. Their broad implementation in sensing applications arises through their many benefits, including ease of design, fabrication, and modification; rapid response time; high selectivity; suitability for use with colored and/or turbid solutions; and potential for integration into embedded systems interfaces. Owing to these advantages and diverse applicability, sustained research and development in the field has resulted in the emergence of several notable trends in the field. 3D printing is the most recent technique used in potentiometry which offers many benefits such as improved flexibility and precision in the manufacturing of ion-selective electrodes and rapid prototyping decreases the time needed during optimization of important electrochemical parameters. Additionally, paper-based sensors are cost-effective and versatile platforms for in-field (point-of-care, POC) analysis, permitting rapid determination of a variety of analytes. One of the most interesting applications of potentiometry are wearable sensors which allow for the continuous monitoring of biomarkers, electrolytes and even pharmaceuticals, especially those with a narrow therapeutic index. Herein this review, we discuss several recent trends in potentiometric sensors since 2010, including 3D printing, paper-based devices, and other emerging techniques and the translation of potentiometric systems to wearable devices for the determination of ionic species or pharmaceuticals in biological fluids paving the way to various clinical and biomedical uses.

A Gold Nanoparticles and MXene Nanocomposite Based Electrochemical Sensor for Point-of-Care Monitoring of Serum Biomarkers

The development of portable, cost-effective, and highly sensitive biosensors for real-time biomarker detection is crucial for advancing point-of-care testing (POCT) and wearable health monitoring. Here, we present an integrated portable electrochemical sensor (ip-ECS) that combines gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and MXene-modified screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) with a custom-designed, low-power electronic system for point-of-care monitoring of serum biomarkers. The AuNPs and MXene nanocomposite significantly enhances the electrochemical performance of the SPE by providing a high density of active sites, improved conductivity, and catalytic activity. The detection of two model molecules (DA and UA) validated the feasibility of ip-ECS, achieving detection limits as low as 1.12 and 1.11 μM for UA and DA, respectively. Furthermore, the ip-ECS was successfully applied to detect Cys C in human serum, showing a linear response in the range of 50-5000 ng/mL and a strong correlation (ρ = 0.9556) with conventional latex immunoturbidimetry (LIA). Clinical validation using serum samples from pregnant women revealed elevated Cys C levels in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) patients, highlighting the sensor's potential for early GDM risk prediction. The ip-ECS represents a significant step forward in the development of next-generation biosensors for POCT, wearable diagnostics, and personalized medicine.

Nanoscale Strategies for Enhancing the Performance of Adhesive Dry Electrodes for the Skin

High-quality electrophysiological monitoring requires electrodes to maintain a compliant and stable skin contact. This necessitates low impedance, good skin compliance, and strong adhesion to ensure continuous and stable contact under dynamic conditions. In this context, adhesive epidermal dry electrodes are advancing rapidly, which is promising for long-term applications in clinical diagnosis, wearable health monitoring, and human-machine interfaces. However, challenges persist, as conventional technologies usually fall short of meeting the high standards required for electrophysiological electrodes. This Perspective discusses four key aspects for high-performance epidermal electrodes from an adhesive perspective: initial adhesion, water resistance, dynamic stability, and removal simplicity. We review recent nanoscale strategies addressing these issues, providing a comprehensive guideline to enhance the application performance of epidermal dry electrodes. Additionally, we explore key nanoscale strategies and their associated functions, future technology roadmaps, and prospects for dry adhesive epidermal electrodes.

Recent progress in multifunctional, reconfigurable, integrated liquid metal-based stretchable sensors and standalone systems

Possessing a unique combination of properties that are traditionally contradictory in other natural or synthetical materials, Ga-based liquid metals (LMs) exhibit low mechanical stiffness and flowability like a liquid, with good electrical and thermal conductivity like metal, as well as good biocompatibility and room-temperature phase transformation. These remarkable properties have paved the way for the development of novel reconfigurable or stretchable electronics and devices. Despite these outstanding properties, the easy oxidation, high surface tension, and low rheological viscosity of LMs have presented formidable challenges in high-resolution patterning. To address this challenge, various surface modifications or additives have been employed to tailor the oxidation state, viscosity, and patterning capability of LMs. One effective approach for LM patterning is breaking down LMs into microparticles known as liquid metal particles (LMPs). This facilitates LM patterning using conventional techniques such as stencil, screening, or inkjet printing. Judiciously formulated photo-curable LMP inks or the introduction of an adhesive seed layer combined with a modified lift-off process further provide the micrometer-level LM patterns. Incorporating porous and adhesive substrates in LM-based electronics allows direct interfacing with the skin for robust and long-term monitoring of physiological signals. Combined with self-healing polymers in the form of substrates or composites, LM-based electronics can provide mechanical-robust devices to heal after damage for working in harsh environments. This review provides the latest advances in LM-based composites, fabrication methods, and their novel and unique applications in stretchable or reconfigurable sensors and resulting integrated systems. It is believed that the advancements in LM-based material preparation and high-resolution techniques have opened up opportunities for customized designs of LM-based stretchable sensors, as well as multifunctional, reconfigurable, highly integrated, and even standalone systems.

Liquid Metal-Polymer Conductor-Based Conformal Cyborg Devices

Gallium-based liquid metal (LM) exhibits exceptional properties such as high conductivity and biocompatibility, rendering it highly valuable for the development of conformal bioelectronics. When combined with polymers, liquid metal-polymer conductors (MPC) offer a versatile platform for fabricating conformal cyborg devices, enabling functions such as sensing, restoration, and augmentation within the human body. This review focuses on the synthesis, fabrication, and application of MPC-based cyborg devices. The synthesis of functional materials based on LM and the fabrication techniques for MPC-based devices are elucidated. The review provides a comprehensive overview of MPC-based cyborg devices, encompassing their applications in sensing diverse signals, therapeutic interventions, and augmentation. The objective of this review is to serve as a valuable resource that bridges the gap between the fabrication of MPC-based conformal devices and their potential biomedical applications.

Functional micro-/nanostructured gallium-based liquid metal for biochemical sensing and imaging applications

In recent years, liquid metals (LMs) have garnered increasing attention for their expanded applicability, and wide application potential in various research fields. Among them, gallium (Ga)-based LMs exhibit remarkable analytical performance in electrical and optical sensors, thanks to their excellent conductivity, large surface area, biocompatibility, small bandgap, and high elasticity. This review comprehensively summarizes the latest advancements in functional micro-/nanostructured Ga-based LMs for biochemical sensing and imaging applications. Firstly, the electrical, optical, and biocompatible features of Ga-based LM micro-/nanoparticles are briefly discussed, along with the manufacturing and functionalization processes. Subsequently, we demonstrate the utilization of Ga-based LMs in biochemical sensing techniques, encompassing electrochemistry, electrochemiluminescence, optical sensing techniques, and various biomedical imaging. Lastly, we present an insightful perspective on promising research directions and remaining challenges in LM-based biochemical sensing and imaging applications.

Bionanotechnology and bioMEMS (BNM): state-of-the-art applications, opportunities, and challenges

The development of micro- and nanotechnology for biomedical applications has defined the cutting edge of medical technology for over three decades, as advancements in fabrication technology developed originally in the semiconductor industry have been applied to solving ever-more complex problems in medicine and biology. These technologies are ideally suited to interfacing with life sciences, since they are on the scale lengths as cells (microns) and biomacromolecules (nanometers). In this paper, we review the state of the art in bionanotechnology and bioMEMS (collectively BNM), including developments and challenges in the areas of BNM, such as microfluidic organ-on-chip devices, oral drug delivery, emerging technologies for managing infectious diseases, 3D printed microfluidic devices, AC electrokinetics, flexible MEMS devices, implantable microdevices, paper-based microfluidic platforms for cellular analysis, and wearable sensors for point-of-care testing.

Flexible Sweat Sensors: From Films to Textiles

Flexible sweat sensors have found widespread potential applications for long-term wear and tracking and real-time monitoring of human health. However, the main substrate currently used in common flexible sweat sensors is thin film, which has disadvantages such as poor air permeability and the need for additional wearables. In this Review, the recent progress of sweat sensors has been systematically summarized by the types of monitoring methods of sweat sensors. In addition, this Review introduces and compares the performance of sweat sensors based on thin film and textile substrates such as fiber/yarn. Finally, opportunities and suggestions for the development of flexible sweat sensors are presented by summarizing the integration methods of sensors and human body monitoring sites.

Recent progress in fiber-based soft electronics enabled by liquid metal

Soft electronics can seamlessly integrate with the human skin which will greatly improve the quality of life in the fields of healthcare monitoring, disease treatment, virtual reality, and human-machine interfaces. Currently, the stretchability of most soft electronics is achieved by incorporating stretchable conductors with elastic substrates. Among stretchable conductors, liquid metals stand out for their metal-grade conductivity, liquid-grade deformability, and relatively low cost. However, the elastic substrates usually composed of silicone rubber, polyurethane, and hydrogels have poor air permeability, and long-term exposure can cause skin redness and irritation. The substrates composed of fibers usually have excellent air permeability due to their high porosity, making them ideal substrates for soft electronics in long-term applications. Fibers can be woven directly into various shapes, or formed into various shapes on the mold by spinning techniques such as electrospinning. Here, we provide an overview of fiber-based soft electronics enabled by liquid metals. An introduction to the spinning technology is provided. Typical applications and patterning strategies of liquid metal are presented. We review the latest progress in the design and fabrication of representative liquid metal fibers and their application in soft electronics such as conductors, sensors, and energy harvesting. Finally, we discuss the challenges of fiber-based soft electronics and provide an outlook on future prospects.

The development of wearable technologies and their potential for measuring nutrient intake: Towards precision nutrition

Appropriate food intake and nutritional status are crucial for the maintenance of health and disease prevention. Conventional dietary assessment is mainly based on comparisons of nutrient intakes with reference intakes, failing to meet the needs of personalised nutritional guidance based on individual nutritional status. Given their capability of providing insights into health information non-invasively in real time, wearable technologies offer great opportunities for nutrition monitoring. Nutrient metabolic profiles can be monitored immediately and continuously which could potentially offer the possibility for the tracking and guiding of nutrient intake. Here, we review and highlight the recent advances in wearable sensors from the perspective of sensing technologies for nutrient detection in biofluids. The integration of biosensors with wearable devices serves as an ideal platform for the analysis of biofluids including sweat, saliva and tears. The wearable sensing systems applied to the analysis of typical nutrients and important metabolites are demonstrated in terms of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals and others. Taking advantage of their high flexibility and lightweight, wearable sensors have been widely developed for the in situ quantitative detection of metabolic biomarkers. The technical principles, detection methods and applications are summarised. The challenges and future perspectives for wearable nutrition monitoring devices are discussed including the need to better determine relationships among nutrient metabolic profile, nutrient intake and food intake. With the development of materials, sensing techniques and manufacturing processes, wearable technologies are paving the way towards personalised precision nutrition, although there is still a long way to go before they can be utilised for practical clinical applications. Joint research efforts between nutrition scientists, doctors, engineers and sensor researchers are essential to further accelerate the realisation of reliable and practical wearable nutrition monitoring platforms.

Integrated biosensors for monitoring microphysiological systems

Microphysiological systems (MPSs), also known as organ-on-a-chip models, aim to recapitulate the functional components of human tissues or organs in vitro. Over the last decade, with the advances in biomaterials, 3D bioprinting, and microfluidics, numerous MPSs have emerged with applications to study diseased and healthy tissue models. Various organs have been modeled using MPS technology, such as the heart, liver, lung, and blood-brain barrier. An important aspect of in vitro modeling is the accurate phenotypical and functional characterization of the modeled organ. However, most conventional characterization methods are invasive and destructive and do not allow continuous monitoring of the cells in culture. On the other hand, microfluidic biosensors enable in-line, real-time sensing of target molecules with an excellent limit of detection and in a non-invasive manner, thereby effectively overcoming the limitation of the traditional techniques. Consequently, microfluidic biosensors have been increasingly integrated into MPSs and used for in-line target detection. This review discusses the state-of-the-art microfluidic biosensors by providing specific examples, detailing their main advantages in monitoring MPSs, and highlighting current developments in this field. Finally, we describe the remaining challenges and potential future developments to advance the current state-of-the-art in integrated microfluidic biosensors.
