Abstract
BACKGROUND Following an episode of hereditary angioedema (HAE), dental anxiety commonly arises, and many patients find it challenging to access proper care. While the use of virtual reality (VR) for pain and anxiety management in dentistry is on the rise, its application in individuals with angioedema remains largely unexplored. In a case series conducted at a specialized dental clinic, three patients with a history of acute angioedema attacks and dental anxiety engaged with 360° VR videos while seated in the dental chair, utilizing a virtual reality device. METHODS Three patients with hereditary angioedema were treated by subjecting them to virtual immersion using VR glasses. Intraoperative reactions were analyzed using VAS scales in order to report the patients' level of anxiety and pain. RESULTS The outcomes, evaluated through a standard observation tool, surveys, and interviews, encompass the assessment of patient anxiety and pain, responses to VR, and the evaluation of system usability along with its impact on the dental team's workflow Three individuals underwent examination, from which three reliable questionnaires were obtained, demonstrating a success rate of 99.9%. The group included one male and two females, with their ages spanning from 6 to 58 years. The findings revealed an average anxiety score of 1.80 with a standard deviation of 0.6 points, and an average pain score of 1.98 with a standard deviation of 0.3, thus validating full immersion in distraction. Statistical analysis using independent-sample t-tests and ANOVA indicated no significant differences in anxiety levels among the patients based on gender. Both patients wore the VR device throughout the procedure, expressing that it was comfortable, diverting, and held the potential to alleviate anxiety and pain. The dentist noted a positive influence on patient anxiety levels and procedure completion times, expressing an intention to continue employing VR with other angioedema patients and across diverse clinical populations. CONCLUSIONS Virtual reality can be an excellent distraction tool in patients with hereditary angioedema who present at least one acute attack per year.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is common today to encounter anxiety in patients facing dental treatment. Virtual reality (VR) is presented as a high-performing and innovative procedure because it can distract patients undergoing dental procedures or prepare them for such treatments. In addition, this meta-analysis has gathered evidence on VR and its ability to reduce dental anxiety in pediatric patients undergoing different treatments. METHODS The major Scopus, PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science databases were searched for scientific articles published up to 2023. Studies in which VR was used for children and adults as a measure against anxiety during dental treatments were included. VR was defined as a three-dimensional place where patients experience a sense of immersion as they find themselves in attractive and interactive environments that detach them from reality. Anxiety and pain were examined and measured during dental treatments in which VR was used by comparing them with standard care situations. RESULTS Twenty-five studies were identified, of which eleven met the inclusion criteria. The effect of VR was studied mainly in the pediatric population as a distractive method. Only two studies (not significant) on an adult population were considered. CONCLUSIONS this review shows that VR is an excellent distraction method that is effective in reducing anxiety before dental treatment; however, due to the few studies in this area, further research on VR as a tool to prepare patients for dental treatment is needed.

Abstract
Objective The present study investigated the clinical potential of managing anxiety during dental procedures to reduce acute attacks in patients with hereditary angioedema (HAE). HAE is a rare disease, little known to physicians and dentists, but with an increased hospitalization rate over the years. HAE is due to a deficiency/dysfunction of the C1 esterase inhibitor, leading to increased vascular permeability. Recommendations for HAE management include long-term and short-term prophylaxis and treatment of acute attacks, but the importance of anxiety control is underestimated. Materials and methods The authors reviewed the literature to provide the scientific community with an overview of possible protocols for managing anxiety in dental practice and their effectiveness. Management can be used in prosthetics, periodontal and implant surgery, endodontics, and oral surgery. Discussions Our analysis shows that although there are few articles in the indexed literature, protocols for managing anxiety in HAE patients in dentistry will become increasingly prevalent in the daily clinical practice of dentists due to its benefits. Conclusions The benefits and better control of intraoperative complications and risks may lead clinicians to use sedation, assessment, or anxiety control techniques in daily clinical practice to reduce such attacks. Clinical relevance: This study suggests that controlling and managing anxiety can help prevent and reduce acute angioedema attacks.

Abstract
A quantitative method for the evaluation of facial swelling in rats with middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was established using a mathematical method for the first time. The rat model of MCAO was established via bilateral common carotid artery ligation. Three groups of rats with the same baseline were selected (model group, positive drug group, and control group) according to their behavioral score and body weight 24 h after surgery. Drug administration was initiated on post-MCAO day 8 and was continued for 28 days. Mobile phones were used to collect facial images at different time points after surgery. In facial image analysis, the outer canthi of both eyes were used as the facial dividing line, and the outer edge of the rat's face was framed using the marking method, and the framed part was regarded as the facial area (S) of the rats. The histogram created with Photoshop CS5 was used to measure the face area in pixels. The distance between the outer canthi of both eyes (Le) and vertical line from the tip of the nose to the line joining the eyes was recorded as H1, and the line from the tip of the nose to the midpoint of the line joining the eyes was recorded as H2. The facial area was calibrated based on the relationship between H1 and H2. The distance between the eyes was inversely proportional to the distance between the rats and mobile phone such that the face area was calibrated by unifying Le. The size of Le between the eyes was inversely proportional to the distance between the rats and mobile phone. This was used to calibrate the face area. When compared with the control group, the facial area of the model group gradually increased from postoperative day 1 to day 7, and there was a significant difference in the facial area of the model group on postoperative day 7. Hence, positive drugs exhibited the effect of improving facial swelling. H1 and H2 can reflect the state of turning the head and raising the head of the rats, respectively. Facial area was calibrated according to the relationship between H1 and H2, which had no obvious effect on the overall conclusion. Furthermore, mobile phone lens was used to capture the picture of rat face, and the distance between the eyes and H1 and H2 was used to calibrate the facial area. Hence, this method is convenient and can be used to evaluate subjective judgment of the human eyes via a quantitative method.

Abstract
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare genetic condition whose main symptoms are recurrent swelling in the skin, mucosa, and internal organs. Recent studies suggested that the regulation of the inflammatory response and the complement cascade are two of the pathways significantly enriched in the Canary Islands, Spain. Here, we describe the first HAE patient series in this region. Forty-one patients (33 F, 8 M) and nine healthy relatives belonging to twenty-nine families were recruited for this study, obtaining their clinical and demographic features using a data collection form, as well as blood samples for biochemical analysis. The mean age of patients was 36.8 years (ranging from 4 to 72 years). Positive family history of HAE was reported in 13 patients (32.5%), and a mean diagnosis delay of 7.9 (±12.5) years was estimated, ranging from months to 50 years. Cutaneous edema was the most common symptom (53.6%), while airway symptoms was present in 11 patients. Prophylactic treatment was indicated for 23 patients, while 14 also require on-demand rescue treatment. We estimate a minimum prevalence of 1.25:100,000 for HAE due to C1-INH deficiency or dysfunction in the Canary Islands, which is higher than the estimates for mainland Spanish populations. HAE continues to be a disease poorly recognized by health care professionals due to its confusing symptoms, leading to longer diagnosis delay. Altogether, the evidence reinforces the need for a rapid and accurate diagnosis and precision medicine-based studies to improve the patient's quality of life.
