Automatic detection of ictal activity in EEG using synchronization and chaos-based attributes

Automatic seizure onset detectors (SODs) have been proposed to alert epileptic patients when a seizure is about to happen and in turn improve their quality of life. Yet, the detectors proposed in literature are complex and difficult to implement in real-time as they utilize large feature sets with redundant and irrelevant features. Hence, the aim of this work is to propose a simple and lightweight SOD that exploits two characteristics that reflect the neuronal behavior during a seizure. Namely, the synchronization between EEG channels and the chaoticity of the EEG; synchronization was measured by the condition number while the recurrence period density entropy estimated the chaoticity of an EEG signal. A support vector machine was trained and tested on 10 patients from a scalp EEG dataset and was able to detect the considered seizures with a sensitivity of 100% and a false positives rate of 0.5 per hour. The results indicate that synchronization and chaos attributes can reflect the manifestation of seizures in EEG data and can be used to develop SODs. This work emphasizes that even a single relevant feature can produce an SOD with comparable performance to SODs that use many features.

Seizure Prediction Based on Transformer Using Scalp Electroencephalogram

Epilepsy is a chronic and recurrent brain dysfunction disease. An acute epileptic attack will interfere with a patient’s normal behavior and consciousness, having a great impact on their life. The purpose of this study was to design a seizure prediction model to improve the quality of patients’ lives and assist doctors in making diagnostic decisions. This paper presents a transformer-based seizure prediction model. Firstly, the time-frequency characteristics of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were extracted by short-time Fourier transform (STFT). Secondly, a three transformer tower model was used to fuse and classify the features of the EEG signals. Finally, when combined with the attention mechanism of transformer networks, the EEG signal was processed as a whole, which solves the problem of length limitations in deep learning models. Experiments were conducted with a Children’s Hospital Boston and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology database to evaluate the performance of the model. The experimental results show that, compared with previous EEG classification models, our model can enhance the ability to use time, frequency, and channel information from EEG signals to improve the accuracy of seizure prediction.

Machine Learning-Based Epileptic Seizure Detection Methods Using Wavelet and EMD-Based Decomposition Techniques: A Review

Epileptic seizures are temporary episodes of convulsions, where approximately 70 percent of the diagnosed population can successfully manage their condition with proper medication and lead a normal life. Over 50 million people worldwide are affected by some form of epileptic seizures, and their accurate detection can help millions in the proper management of this condition. Increasing research in machine learning has made a great impact on biomedical signal processing and especially in electroencephalogram (EEG) data analysis. The availability of various feature extraction techniques and classification methods makes it difficult to choose the most suitable combination for resource-efficient and correct detection. This paper intends to review the relevant studies of wavelet and empirical mode decomposition-based feature extraction techniques used for seizure detection in epileptic EEG data. The articles were chosen for review based on their Journal Citation Report, feature selection methods, and classifiers used. The high-dimensional EEG data falls under the category of ‘3N’ biosignals—nonstationary, nonlinear, and noisy; hence, two popular classifiers, namely random forest and support vector machine, were taken for review, as they are capable of handling high-dimensional data and have a low risk of over-fitting. The main metrics used are sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy; hence, some papers reviewed were excluded due to insufficient metrics. To evaluate the overall performances of the reviewed papers, a simple mean value of all metrics was used. This review indicates that the system that used a Stockwell transform wavelet variant as a feature extractor and SVM classifiers led to a potentially better result.

Machine learning based intelligent automated neonatal epileptic seizure detection

Epilepsy is found to be the fourth most common chronic neurological disorder that tends to abnormal and unpredictable brain activity and seizure states. According to statistics, 70% of the epilepsy patients can be cured if identified and treated with anti-epileptic drugs or shock stimulations. Only about 7% to 8% need to be operated. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a cheap and effective way to record the prolonged activities of the brain through electrical impulses between neural cells. Seizure is difficult to detect in neonates as the signal involves a lot of disturbances and the existing high accuracy system for adults can’t be used for neonates. In an attempt to build an impregnable system to detect seizure in early stages, EEG signals of neonates procured from Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Helsinki University Hospital. These signals were processed and fed into three different robust algorithms –Support Vector Machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and 1-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN). The experimental results were compared and the proposed CNN model with 95.99% accuracy outperforms all the state-of-art models for automated Epileptic Seizure prediction in Neonates. Deep CNN has been a powerful tool in extracting robust features from EEG signals. This generalized system can be used by medical experts for detecting Seizure in neonates with better accuracy and reliability.

Epileptic Seizure Detection with EEG Textural Features and Imbalanced Classification Based on EasyEnsemble Learning

Imbalance data classification is a challenging task in automatic seizure detection from electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings when the durations of non-seizure periods are much longer than those of seizure activities. An imbalanced learning model is proposed in this paper to improve the identification of seizure events in long-term EEG signals. To better represent the underlying microstructure distributions of EEG signals while preserving the non-stationary nature, discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and uniform 1D-LBP feature extraction procedure are introduced. A learning framework is then designed by the ensemble of weakly trained support vector machines (SVMs). Under-sampling is employed to split the imbalanced seizure and non-seizure samples into multiple balanced subsets where each of them is utilized to train an individual SVM classifier. The weak SVMs are incorporated to build a strong classifier which emphasizes seizure samples and in the meantime analyzing the imbalanced class distribution of EEG data. Final seizure detection results are obtained in a multi-level decision fusion process by considering temporal and frequency factors. The model was validated over two long-term and one short-term public EEG databases. The model achieved a [Formula: see text]-mean of 97.14% with respect to epoch-level assessment, an event-level sensitivity of 96.67%, and a false detection rate of 0.86/h on the long-term intracranial database. An epoch-level [Formula: see text]-mean of 95.28% and event-level false detection rate of 0.81/h were yielded over the long-term scalp database. The comparisons with 14 published methods demonstrated the improved detection performance for imbalanced EEG signals and the generalizability of the proposed model.
