PocketNet: A Smaller Neural Network for Medical Image Analysis

Medical imaging deep learning models are often large and complex, requiring specialized hardware to train and evaluate these models. To address such issues, we propose the PocketNet paradigm to reduce the size of deep learning models by throttling the growth of the number of channels in convolutional neural networks. We demonstrate that, for a range of segmentation and classification tasks, PocketNet architectures produce results comparable to that of conventional neural networks while reducing the number of parameters by multiple orders of magnitude, using up to 90% less GPU memory, and speeding up training times by up to 40%, thereby allowing such models to be trained and deployed in resource-constrained settings.

A Machine-Learning-Based Medical Imaging Fast Recognition of Injury Mechanism for Athletes of Winter Sports

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics will begin soon, which is mainly focused on winter sports. Athletes from different countries will arrive in Beijing one after another for training and competition. The health protection of athletes of winter sports is very important in training and competition. The occurrence of sports injury is characterized by multiple factors, uncertainty, and accidents. This paper mainly pays attention to the head injury with the highest severity. Athletes' high safety awareness is a part of reducing injury, but safety awareness cannot effectively reduce the occurrence of injury in competition, and timely treatment of injured athletes is particularly important. After athletes are injured, a telemedicine image acquisition system can be built, so that medical experts can identify athletes' injuries in time and provide the basis for further diagnosis and treatment. In order to improve the accuracy of medical image processing, a C-support vector machine (SVM) medical image segmentation method combining the Chan-Vese (CV) model and SVM is proposed in this paper. After segmentation, the edge and detail features of the image are more prominent, which meet the requirements of high precision for medical image segmentation. Meanwhile, a high-precision registration algorithm of brain functional time-series images based on machine learning (ML) is proposed, and the automatic optimization of high-precision registration of brain function time-series images is performed by ML algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has higher segmentation accuracy above 80% and less registration time below 40 ms, which can provide a reference for doctors to quickly identify the injury and shorten the time.

TopoResNet: A Hybrid Deep Learning Architecture and Its Application to Skin Lesion Classification

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) to various medical subfields has been a popular topic of research in recent years. In particular, deep learning has been widely used and has proven effective in many cases. Topological data analysis (TDA)—a rising field at the intersection of mathematics, statistics, and computer science—offers new insights into data. In this work, we develop a novel deep learning architecture that we call TopoResNet that integrates topological information into the residual neural network architecture. To demonstrate TopoResNet, we apply it to a skin lesion classification problem. We find that TopoResNet improves the accuracy and the stability of the training process.

A Novel Negative-Transfer-Resistant Fuzzy Clustering Model With a Shared Cross-Domain Transfer Latent Space and its Application to Brain CT Image Segmentation

Traditional clustering algorithms for medical image segmentation can only achieve satisfactory clustering performance under relatively ideal conditions, in which there is adequate data from the same distribution, and the data is rarely disturbed by noise or outliers. However, a sufficient amount of medical images with representative manual labels are often not available, because medical images are frequently acquired with different scanners (or different scan protocols) or polluted by various noises. Transfer learning improves learning in the target domain by leveraging knowledge from related domains. Given some target data, the performance of transfer learning is determined by the degree of relevance between the source and target domains. To achieve positive transfer and avoid negative transfer, a negative-transfer-resistant mechanism is proposed by computing the weight of transferred knowledge. Extracting a negative-transfer-resistant fuzzy clustering model with a shared cross-domain transfer latent space (called NTR-FC-SCT) is proposed by integrating negative-transfer-resistant and maximum mean discrepancy (MMD) into the framework of fuzzy c-means clustering. Experimental results show that the proposed NTR-FC-SCT model outperformed several traditional non-transfer and related transfer clustering algorithms.

Fully 3D Active Surface with Machine Learning for PET Image Segmentation

In order to tackle three-dimensional tumor volume reconstruction from Positron Emission Tomography (PET) images, most of the existing algorithms rely on the segmentation of independent PET slices. To exploit cross-slice information, typically overlooked in these 2D implementations, I present an algorithm capable of achieving the volume reconstruction directly in 3D, by leveraging an active surface algorithm. The evolution of such surface performs the segmentation of the whole stack of slices simultaneously and can handle changes in topology. Furthermore, no artificial stop condition is required, as the active surface will naturally converge to a stable topology. In addition, I include a machine learning component to enhance the accuracy of the segmentation process. The latter consists of a forcing term based on classification results from a discriminant analysis algorithm, which is included directly in the mathematical formulation of the energy function driving surface evolution. It is worth noting that the training of such a component requires minimal data compared to more involved deep learning methods. Only eight patients (i.e., two lung, four head and neck, and two brain cancers) were used for training and testing the machine learning component, while fifty patients (i.e., 10 lung, 25 head and neck, and 15 brain cancers) were used to test the full 3D reconstruction algorithm. Performance evaluation is based on the same dataset of patients discussed in my previous work, where the segmentation was performed using the 2D active contour. The results confirm that the active surface algorithm is superior to the active contour algorithm, outperforming the earlier approach on all the investigated anatomical districts with a dice similarity coefficient of 90.47 ± 2.36% for lung cancer, 88.30 ± 2.89% for head and neck cancer, and 90.29 ± 2.52% for brain cancer. Based on the reported results, it can be claimed that the migration into a 3D system yielded a practical benefit justifying the effort to rewrite an existing 2D system for PET imaging segmentation.

Path Tracking Control of Field Information-Collecting Robot Based on Improved Convolutional Neural Network Algorithm

Due to the narrow row spacing of corn, the lack of light in the field caused by the blocking of branches, leaves and weeds in the middle and late stages of corn growth, it is generally difficult for machinery to move between rows and also impossible to observe the corn growth in real time. To solve the problem, a robot for corn interlines information collection thus is designed. First, the mathematical model of the robot is established using the designed control system. Second, an improved convolutional neural network model is proposed for training and learning, and the driving path is fitted by detecting and identifying corn rhizomes. Next, a multi-body dynamics simulation software, RecurDyn/track, is used to establish a dynamic model of the robot movement in soft soil conditions, and a control system is developed in MATLAB/SIMULINK for joint simulation experiments. Simulation results show that the method for controlling a sliding-mode variable structure can achieve better control results. Finally, experiments on the ground and in a simulated field environment show that the robot for field information collection based on the method developed runs stably and shows little deviation. The robot can be well applied for field plant protection, the control of corn diseases and insect pests, and the realization of human–machine separation.
