Closed-Loop Implantable Neurostimulators for Individualized Treatment of Intractable Epilepsy: A Review of Recent Developments, Ongoing Challenges, and Future Opportunities

Driven by its proven therapeutic efficacy in treating movement disorders and psychiatric conditions, neurostimulation has emerged as a promising intervention for intractable epilepsy. Researchers envision an advanced implantable device capable of long-term neuronal monitoring, high spatio-temporal resolution data processing, and timely responsive neurostimulation upon seizure detection. However, the stringent energy constraints of implantable devices and significant inter-patient variability in neural activity pose substantial challenges and opportunities for biomedical circuits and systems researchers. For seizure detection, various ASIC solutions employing both deterministic and data-driven algorithms have been developed. These solutions leverage a subset of numerous signal features (spanning time and frequency domains) and classifiers (such as SVMs, DNNs, SNNs) to achieve notable success in terms of detection accuracy, latency, and energy efficiency. Implementations vary widely in computational approaches (digital, mixed-signal, analog, spike-based), training strategies (online versus offline), and application targets (patient-specific versus cross-patient). In terms of treatment, recent efforts have focused on the personalization of stimulation waveforms to enhance therapeutic efficacy. This personalization faces complex challenges, including a limited understanding of how stimulation parameters influence neuronal activity, the lack of a comprehensive brain model to capture its intricate electrochemical dynamics, and recording neural signals in the presence of stimulation artifacts. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the field, detailing the foundational principles, recent advancements, and ongoing challenges in enhancing the diagnostic accuracy, treatment efficacy, and energy efficiency of implantable patient-optimized neurostimulators. We also discuss potential future directions, emphasizing the need for standardized performance metrics, advanced computational models, and adaptive stimulation protocols to realize the full potential of this transformative technology.

Energy efficiency identification and surface roughness prediction using cutting force signal for computer numerical controlled machine systems

The energy efficiency identification of machining process plays an indispensable part in achieving energy-efficient manufacturing and improving energy utilization as well as productivity and surface quality. However, there is a great difficulty to track energy efficiency in real-time based on one kind of traditional power signal. Because energy consumption is affected by many factors such as machine tool current performance, tool wear conditions and cutting parameters selection. This paper puts forward an energy efficiency recognition method as well as surface roughness prediction model based on the cutting force signals. The CEEMDAN (Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise) algorithm is employed to decompose the cutting force signal into multiple IMF (intrinsic mode function) components; and characterization of energy efficiency of machining process is recognized through proportion of components based on PCA-Fast ICA algorithm. Then, a surface roughness prediction model is proposed using support vector regression (SVR) based on specific cutting energy consumption (SCEC). The orthogonal test is designed considering spindle speed, feed rate, depth of cutting and width of cutting in 3 levels to obtain the influence degree of cutting parameters on cutting force, specific energy consumption, and the surface roughness. The energy efficiency of 27 group experiments is classified into high, medium and low levels according to energy efficiency value. Finally, using the data of orthogonal test, energy efficiency state was identified. The result show that time-frequency of cutting force signals for high, medium and low energy efficiency could be extracted, and the average absolute error of surface roughness predict is 0.058. That illustrated that the proposed method could meet the industry requirement for energy efficiency monitoring and surface roughness prediction to achieve sustainable manufacturing.

Robust Epileptic Seizure Detection Using Long Short-Term Memory and Feature Fusion of Compressed Time-Frequency EEG Images

Epilepsy is a prevalent neurological disorder with considerable risks, including physical impairment and irreversible brain damage from seizures. Given these challenges, the urgency for prompt and accurate seizure detection cannot be overstated. Traditionally, experts have relied on manual EEG signal analyses for seizure detection, which is labor-intensive and prone to human error. Recognizing this limitation, the rise in deep learning methods has been heralded as a promising avenue, offering more refined diagnostic precision. On the other hand, the prevailing challenge in many models is their constrained emphasis on specific domains, potentially diminishing their robustness and precision in complex real-world environments. This paper presents a novel model that seamlessly integrates the salient features from the time-frequency domain along with pivotal statistical attributes derived from EEG signals. This fusion process involves the integration of essential statistics, including the mean, median, and variance, combined with the rich data from compressed time-frequency (CWT) images processed using autoencoders. This multidimensional feature set provides a robust foundation for subsequent analytic steps. A long short-term memory (LSTM) network, meticulously optimized for the renowned Bonn Epilepsy dataset, was used to enhance the capability of the proposed model. Preliminary evaluations underscore the prowess of the proposed model: a remarkable 100% accuracy in most of the binary classifications, exceeding 95% accuracy in three-class and four-class challenges, and a commendable rate, exceeding 93.5% for the five-class classification.

Statistical Analysis Based Feature Selection Enhanced RF-PUF With >99.8% Accuracy on Unmodified Commodity Transmitters for IoT Physical Security

Due to the diverse and mobile nature of the deployment environment, smart commodity devices are vulnerable to various spoofing attacks which can allow a rogue device to get access to a large network. The vulnerability of the traditional digital signature-based authentication system lies in the fact that it uses only a key/pin, ignoring the device fingerprint. To circumvent the inherent weakness of the traditional system, various physical signature-based RF fingerprinting methods have been proposed in literature and RF-PUF is a promising choice among them. RF-PUF utilizes the inherent nonidealities of the traditional RF communication system as features at the receiver to uniquely identify a transmitter. It is resilient to key-hacking methods due to the absence of secret key requirements and does not require any additional circuitry on the transmitter end (no additional power, area, and computational burden). However, the concept of RF-PUF was proposed using MATLAB-generated data, which cannot ensure the presence of device entropy mapped to the system-level nonidealities. Hence, an experimental validation using commercial devices is necessary to prove its efficacy. In this work, for the first time, we analyze the effectiveness of RF-PUF on commodity devices, purchased off-the-shelf, without any modifications whatsoever. We have collected data from 30 Xbee S2C modules used as transmitters and released as a public dataset. A new feature has been engineered through PCA and statistical property analysis. With a new and robust feature set, it has been shown that 95% accuracy can be achieved using only ∼1.8 ms of test data fed into a neural network of 10 neurons in 1 layer, reaching >99.8% accuracy with a network of higher model capacity, for the first time in literature without any assisting digital preamble. The design space has been explored in detail and the effect of the wireless channel has been investigated. The performance of some popular machine learning algorithms has been tested and compared with the neural network approach. A thorough investigation of various PUF properties has been done. With extensive testing of 41238000 cases, the detection probability for RF-PUF for our data is found to be 0.9987, which, for the first time, experimentally establishes RF-PUF as a strong authentication method. Finally, the potential attack models and the robustness of RF-PUF against them have been discussed.
