The absolute previously infected novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was found in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The COVID-19 epidemic has spread to more than 220 nations and territories globally and has altogether influenced each part of our day-to-day lives. As of 9th March 2022, a total aggregate of 44,78,82,185 (60,07,317) contaminated (dead) COVID-19 cases were accounted for all over the world. The quantities of contaminated cases passing despite everything increment essentially and do not indicate a controlled circumstance. The scope of this paper is to address this issue by presenting a comprehensive and comparative analysis of the existing Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based approaches used in significance in reacting to the COVID-19 epidemic and diagnosing the severe impacts. The paper provides, firstly, an overview of COVID-19 infection and highlights of this article; Secondly, an overview of exploring various executive innovations by utilizing different resources to stop the spread of COVID-19; Thirdly, a comparison of existing predicting methods of COVID-19 in the literature, with focus on ML, DL and AI-driven techniques with performance metrics; and finally, a discussion on the results of the work as well as future scope.

A transfer learning based deep learning model to diagnose covid-19 CT scan images

To save the life of human beings during the pandemic conditions we need an effective automated method to deal with this situation. In pandemic conditions when the available resources becomes insufficient to handle the patient's load, then we needed some fast and reliable method which analyse the patient medical data with high efficiency and accuracy within time limitations. In this manuscript, an effective and efficient method is proposed for exact diagnosis of the patient whether it is coronavirus disease-2019 (covid-19) positive or negative with the help of deep learning. To find the correct diagnosis with high accuracy we use pre-processed segmented images for the analysis with deep learning. In the first step the X-ray image or computed tomography (CT) of a covid-19 infected person is analysed with various schemes of image segmentation like simple thresholding at 0.3, simple thresholding at 0.6, multiple thresholding (between 26-230) and Otsu's algorithm. On comparative analysis of all these methods, it is found that the Otsu's algorithm is a simple and optimum scheme to improve the segmented outcome of binary image for the diagnosis point of view. Otsu's segmentation scheme gives more precise values in comparison to other methods on the scale of various image quality parameters like accuracy, sensitivity, f-measure, precision, and specificity. For image classification here we use Resnet-50, MobileNet and VGG-16 models of deep learning which gives accuracy 70.24%, 72.95% and 83.18% respectively with non-segmented CT scan images and 75.08%, 80.12% and 99.28% respectively with Otsu's segmented CT scan images. On a comparative study we find that the VGG-16 models with CT scan image segmented with Otsu's segmentation gives very high accuracy of 99.28%. On the basis of the diagnosis of the patient firstly we go for an arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis and then on the behalf of this diagnosis and ABG report, the severity level of the patient can be decided and according to this severity level, proper treatment protocols can be followed immediately to save the patient's life. Compared with the existing works, our deep learning based novel method reduces the complexity, takes much less time and has a greater accuracy for exact diagnosis of coronavirus disease-2019 (covid-19).

Three-dimensional dispersion entropy for uterine fibroid texture quantification and post-embolization evaluation

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that could lead to symptoms complicating a patient's daily life. Those fibroids can be treated using uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), an effective non-surgical procedure. However, objectively quantifying the benefits of such a procedure, and the patient's quality of life, is rather challenging.

METHODS

With a novel multiscale three-dimensional (3D) entropy-based texture analysis, the multiscale 3D dispersion entropy (MDispEn_3D), this work aims to objectively quantify the evolution -  after UFE  -  of patients' health in terms of quality of life, symptoms severity, and sexual function. For this purpose, clinical data and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of fibroids are analyzed before UFE (D0), ten days after (D10), and six months after (M6).

RESULTS

An inverse correlation is observed between MDispEn_3D entropy values and both size and volume of fibroids. An inverse correlation is also observed between MDispEn_3D at M6 and the scores of symptoms severity. Moreover, the patient age is found to be related to the relative difference of DispEn_3D and MDispEn_3D values, between D0 and M6, translating into an increasing entropy value. Furthermore, we show that history of fibroma plays a role in determining the obtained DispEn_3D values at D0. Finally, we observe that the lower MDispEn_3D values at D0, the larger the size of the fibroid at M6.

CONCLUSIONS

The proposed MDispEn_3D method - by quantifying fibroid texture - could assist the medical doctors in the prognosis of uterine fibroids and the patients' quality of life assessment post-UFE. It could therefore favor the choice of this treatment compared to other more invasive surgical treatments.

COVID-index: A texture-based approach to classifying lung lesions based on CT images

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered type of coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. Since the discovery of this disease in late 2019, COVID-19 has become a worldwide concern, mainly due to its high degree of contagion. As of April 2021, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported to the World Health Organization has already exceeded 135 million worldwide, while the number of deaths exceeds 2.9 million. Due to the impacts of the disease, efforts in the literature have intensified in terms of studying approaches aiming to detect COVID-19, with a focus on supporting and facilitating the process of disease diagnosis. This work proposes the application of texture descriptors based on phylogenetic relationships between species to characterize segmented CT volumes, and the subsequent classification of regions into COVID-19, solid lesion or healthy tissue. To evaluate our method, we use images from three different datasets. The results are promising, with an accuracy of 99.93%, a recall of 99.93%, a precision of 99.93%, an F1-score of 99.93%, and an AUC of 0.997. We present a robust, simple, and efficient method that can be easily applied to 2D and/or 3D images without limitations on their dimensionality.
