Functionalization of cotton fabrics with plasmonic photo-active nanostructured Au-TiO2 layer

Effect of the Photoreduction Process on the Self-Cleaning and Antibacterial Activity of Au-Doped TiO2 Colloids on Cotton Fabric

This study aims at understanding the effect of the photoreduction process during the synthesis of gold (Au)-doped TiO2 colloids on the conferred functionalities on cotton fabrics. TiO2/Au and TiO2/Au/SiO2 colloids were synthesized through the sol-gel method with and without undergoing the photoreduction step based on different molar ratios of Au:Ti (0.001 and 0.01) and TiO2/SiO2 (1:1 and 1:2.3). The colloids were applied to cotton fabrics, and the obtained photocatalytic self-cleaning, wet photocatalytic activity, UV protection, and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria were investigated. The obtained results demonstrated that the photoreduction of Au weakened the self-cleaning effect and reduced the photocatalytic activity of coated fabrics. Also, an excess amount of Au deteriorated the photocatalytic activity under both UV and visible light. The most efficient self-cleaning effect was obtained on fabrics coated with a ternary TiO2/Au/SiO2 colloid containing ionic Au, where it decomposed coffee and red-wine stains after 3 h of illumination. Adding silica (SiO2) made the fabrics superhydrophilic and led to greater methylene blue (MB) dye adsorption, a faster dye degradation pace, and more efficient stain removal. Moreover, the photoreduction process affected the size of Au nanoparticles (NPs), weakened the antibacterial activity of fabrics against both types of tested bacteria, and modestly increased the UV protection. In general, the photoactivity of Au-doped colloids was influenced by the synthesis method, the ionic and metallic states of the Au dopant, the concentration of the Au dopant, and the presence and concentration of silica.

HAuCl4-mediated green synthesis of highly stable Au NPs from natural active polysaccharides: Synthetic mechanism and antioxidant property

Polysaccharide-functionalized gold nanoparticles (Polysaccharide-Au NPs) with high stability were successfully prepared by a straightforward method. Notably, the Au (III) ion acts as a strong Lewis acid to facilitate glycosidic bond breaking. Subsequently, the polysaccharide conformation was transformed to an open-chain form, exposing highly reduced aldehyde or ketone groups that reduce Au (III) to Au (0) crystal species, further growing into Au NPs. As-prepared Au NPs displayed excellent stability over a longer storage period (more than 70 days), a wide range of temperatures (25-60 °C), and pH range (3-11), varying concentrations (0-200 mM) and types of salt ions (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+), and glutathione solutions (5 mM). More interestingly, polysaccharide-Au NPs retained the antioxidant activity of polysaccharides and reduced oxidative damage at the cellular level through decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The intracellular levels of ROS pretreated with polysaccharide and polysaccharide-Au NPs were decreased 53.12-75.85 % compared to the H2O2 group, respectively. Therefore, the green synthesized Au NPs from natural active polysaccharides exhibit potential applications in biomedical fields.

Green synthesis of Ag@AgCl/Elaeagnus angustifolia seed nanocomposite using Elaeagnus angustifolia leaves: an amazing nanophotocatalyst with highly photocatalytic activity under sunlight irradiation

In this investigation, Ag@AgCl nanoparticles were synthesized by a green and inexpensive method using Elaeagnus angustifolia leaves, as a reducing and stabilizing agent without using any toxic solvent, external halide source, harsh chemicals, or capping agents. In this protocol, the nanophotocatalyst was synthesized via immobilization of Ag@AgCl NPs on the surface of biowaste Elaeagnus angustifolia seed (EAS) as a green support, which prevents the agglomeration Ag@AgCl NPs and improves the catalytic activity. The biosynthesized nanophotocatalyst were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and transform electron microscopy (TEM) and inductively couple plasma mass spectrometry (ICP). In order to investigate the photocatalytic activity of the biosynthesized nanophotocatalyst, it was used in the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under sunlight. The results showed that nanophotocatalyst had an excellent photo activity without any agglomeration. In addition, the nanophotocatalyst can be easily be recycled and reused several times without losing its activity. Graphical abstract.
