Abstract
Vegetable waste, including mixed cabbage residue (MCR), is considered a promising raw material for bioenergy production because of its high lignocellulosic component. In this study, the pretreatment of MCR by ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim][OAc]) was optimized based on response surface methodology. The optimal condition for MCR pretreatment was determined at 55.8 °C, with a reaction of 2.65 h and liquid-solid ratio of 4.60:1 v/w. Hydrolysis of pretreated MCR from optimal pretreatment conditions generated a maximum glucose yield of 156.65 ± 7.66 mg/g MCR. Untreated and pretreated MCRs were successfully characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The pretreated MCR exhibited increased clear pores and incomplete structure. Moreover, compared with untreated biomass, decreased lignin, decreased hemicellulose, increased surface area, and cellulose crystallinity were observed. Thus, [Emim][OAc] pretreatment is a promising alternative approach for higher glucose production from MCR.

Abstract
Chameleon skin is naturally adaptive and can sense environmental changes and transform sensing into bioelectrical and optical signals by manipulating ion transduction and photonic nanostructures. The increasing interest in mimicking biological skins has considerably promoted the development of advanced photonic materials with an increasing ionic conductivity. Herein, we report the judicious design and fabrication of a bioinspired mechanochromic chiral nematic nanostructured film with good ionic conductivity by infiltrating fluorine-rich ionic liquids (FILs) into a swollen self-assembled cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) film with helical nanoarchitectures. Notably, the introduction of 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate considerably enhances the compatibility of hydrophobic FILs and hydrophilic CNCs. The resulting FIL-CNC nanostructured films exhibited excellent mechanochromism, good ionic conductivity, and outstanding optical/electrical dual-signal sensing performance when used as a bioinspired ionic skin for real-time monitoring of human motions. Owing to the integration of FILs, the underwater stability of the chiral liquid crystal nanostructures of CNCs was significantly enhanced. Notably, underwater contact/contactless sensing modes and encrypted information transmission have been achieved with the FIL-CNC nanostructured film. This study can offer great insights for the advancement of biomimetic multifunctional artificial skins and emerging interactive devices, which can find important applications in wearable iontronics, human-machine interactions, and intelligent robots.

Abstract
This study aims to establish an efficient pretreatment method that facilitates the conversion of sugars from macroalgae wastes, Eucheuma cottonii residues (ECRs) during hydrolysis and subsequently enhances l-lactic acid (L-LA) production. Hence, ultrasonic-assisted molten salt hydrates (UMSHs) pretreatment was proposed to enhance the accessibility of ECRs to hydrolyze into glucose through dilute acid hydrolysis (DAH). The obtained hydrolysates were employed as the substrate in producing L-LA by separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF). The maximum glucose yield (97.75 %) was achieved using UMSHs pretreated ECRs with 40 wt% ZnCl2 at 80 °C for 2 h and followed with DAH. The optimum glucose to L-LA yield obtained for SHF was 90.08 % using 5 % (w/w) inoculum cell densities of B. coagulans ATCC 7050 with yeast extract (YE). A comparable performance (89.65 %) was obtained using a nutrient combination (lipid-extracted Chlorella vulgaris residues (CVRs), vitamin B3, and vitamin B5) as a partial alternative for YE.

Abstract
As a new generation of green solvents, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been considered as a promising alternative to classical organic solvents and ionic liquids (ILs). DESs are normally formed by two or more components via various h-bonds interactions. Up to date, four types of DESs are found, namely, type I DESs (formed by MClx, namely FeCl2, AlCl3, ZnCl2, CuCl2 and AgCl et al., and quaternary ammonium salts); type II DESs (formed by metal chloride hydrates and quaternary ammonium salts); type III DESs (formed by choline chlorides and different kinds of HBDs) and type IV DESs (formed by salts of transition metals and urea). DESs share many advantages, such as low vapor pressure, good substrate solubility and thermal stability, with ILs, and offering a high potential to be the medium of biocatalysis reactions. In this case, this paper reviews the applications of DESs in enzymatic reactions. Lipases are the most widely used enzyme in DESs systems as their versatile applications in various reactions and robustness. Interestingly, DESs can improve the efficiency of these reactions via enhancing the substrates solubility and the activity and stability of enzymes. Therefore, the directed engineering of DESs for special reactions such as degradation of polymers in high temperature or strong acid-base conditions will be one of the future perspectives of the investigation DESs.

Abstract
An integrated treatment coupling alkali, steam explosion and ammonia/chlorine-free bleaching with sequential mild acid pretreatment were performed to isolate and characterize cellulose from banana agrowastes followed by optimized enzymatic hydrolysis to glucose. The cellulose yield, compositional, microstructural, and morphological analysis initially obtained from three post-harvest banana agrowastes (peel, pseudostem, and peduncle) were surveyed. Isolation parameters for banana peduncle agrowastes, the most efficient precursor, were reconfigured for acid hydrolysis by applying an orthogonal L9 array of Taguchi design. Effects of solution-to-pulp ratio, acid concentration, temperature, and reaction time on physicochemical parameters were assessed resulting in ~81% cellulose recovery. Subsequently, cellulase driven enzymatic conversion to glucose was modelled using response surface methodology (RSM), where the mutual influences of incubation time, enzyme concentration, substrate concentration, and surfactant concentration were investigated. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modelling further improved upon RSM optimizations ensuing ~97% optimized glucose yield, verified experimentally.

Abstract
In this study, an economically competitive and sustainable levulinic acid-based protic ionic liquids were identified to be good solvents for the dissolution pretreatment of cellulose towards enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis. The influences of protic ionic liquids species, dissolution pretreatment time, and pretreatment temperature on the physico-chemical structures of cellulose were systematically investigated by various analytical techniques. The findings indicate that the pretreatment efficiency was correlated to the basicity of the organic bases, and the presence of ketone group in the levulinate anion with particular hydrogen bonding forming ability via keto-enol tautomerism. The DBN derived protic ionic liquids exhibited best performance at 100 °C in 1 h, as evidenced by a 94% glucose yield. This solvent system was also suitable for the dissolution pretreatment of corn stover-based lignocellulosic biomass for sugars production, although a higher temperature and longer pretreatment time was required. Furthermore, the solvent system could be recycled and reused.

Organosolv pretreatment assisted by carbocation scavenger to mitigate surface barrier effect of lignin for improving biomass saccharification and utilization. BIOTECHNOLOGY FOR BIOFUELS 2021; 14:136. [PMID: 34118969 PMCID: PMC8199801 DOI: 10.1186/s13068-021-01988-w] [Citation(s) in RCA: 3] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/07/2021] [Accepted: 06/05/2021] [Indexed: 05/03/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Ethanol organosolv (EOS) pretreatment is one of the most efficient methods for boosting biomass saccharification as it can achieve an efficient fractionation of three major constituents in lignocellulose. However, lignin repolymerization often occurs in acid EOS pretreatment, which impairs subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis. This study investigated acid EOS pretreatment assisted by carbocation scavenger (2-naphthol, 2-naphthol-7-sulfonate, mannitol and syringic acid) to improve biomass fractionation, coproduction of fermentable sugars and lignin adsorbents. In addition, surface barrier effect of lignin on cellulose hydrolysis was isolated from unproductive binding effect of lignin, and the analyses of surface chemistry, surface morphology and surface area were carried out to reveal the lignin inhibition mitigating effect of various additives. RESULTS Four different additives all helped mitigate lignin inhibition on cellulose hydrolysis in particular diminishing surface barrier effect, among which 2-naphthol-7-sulfonate showed the best performance in improving pretreatment efficacy, while mannitol and syringic acid could serve as novel green additives. Through the addition of 2-naphthol-7-sulfonate, selective lignin removal was increased up to 76%, while cellulose hydrolysis yield was improved by 85%. As a result, 35.78 kg cellulose and 16.63 kg hemicellulose from 100 kg poplar could be released and recovered as fermentable sugars, corresponding to a sugar yield of 78%. Moreover, 22.56 kg ethanol organosolv lignin and 17.53 kg enzymatic hydrolysis residue could be recovered as lignin adsorbents for textile dye removal, with the adsorption capacities of 45.87 and 103.09 mg g-1, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Results in this work indicated proper additives could give rise to the form of less repolymerized surface lignin, which would decrease the unproductive binding of cellulase enzymes to surface lignin. Besides, the supplementation of additives (NS, MT and SA) resulted in a simultaneously increased surface area and decreased lignin coverage. All these factors contributed to the diminished surface barrier effect of lignin, thereby improving the ease of enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. The biorefinery process based on acidic EOS pretreatment assisted by carbocation scavenger was proved to enable the coproduction of fermentable sugars and lignin adsorbents, allowing the holistic utilization of lignocellulosic biomass for a sustainable biorefinery.

Abstract
This review addresses composites prepared from cellulose (Cel) and silk fibroin (SF) to generate multifunctional, biocompatible, biodegradable materials such as fibers, films and scaffolds for tissue engineering. First, we discuss briefly the molecular structures of Cel and SF. Their structural features explain why certain solvents, e.g., ionic liquids, inorganic electrolyte solutions dissolve both biopolymers. We discuss the mechanisms of Cel dissolution because in many cases they also apply to (much less studied) SF dissolution. Subsequently, we discuss the fabrication and characterization of Cel/SF composite biomaterials. We show how the composition of these materials beneficially affects their mechanical properties, compared to those of the precursor biopolymers. We also show that Cel/SF materials are excellent and versatile candidates for biomedical applications because of the inherent biocompatibility of their components.

Abstract
A novel natural deep eutectic solvent (NDES) with water content ranging from 65 to 93 wt%, in which betaine (Bet) acts as the cation and amino acids (AAs) as the anions, was prepared by a simple and green chemical route. [Bet][AA] NDES showed excellent xylan and lignin solubility, however, scare cellulose solubility. A mild and facile pretreatment process with [Bet][AA] NDES was carried out at 60 °C for 5 h. The enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of cellulose and corncob was significantly improved. Detailed characterization showed that the enhancement of cellulose digestibility derived mainly from xylan and lignin removal. Xylan and lignin removal for [Bet][Lys]-W87 was 47.68 and 49.06%, while it was 42.20% and 57.01% for [Bet][Arg]-W82, respectively. FT-IR, SEM, XRD, and HSQC NMR studies confirmed the effectiveness and mechanism of [Bet][Lys]-W87 and [Bet][Arg]-W82 on biomass pretreatment.

Abstract
To overcoming the natural recalcitrance of cellulose for glucose production via enzymatic hydrolysis, a new strategy of destroying hydrogen bond donor to reconstruct cellulose's hydrogen bonding network was developed via a mild reversible reaction of cellulose with CO2 catalyzed by organic bases. The reaction dynamics of cellulose with CO2 in the presence of organic bases was studied by using in situ IR. Investigation also included how the organic bases in pretreatment media and pretreatment parameters including CO2 pressure, pretreatment temperature and time affected the physical-chemical structure of cellulose by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and subsequent enzymatic scarification of cellulose. The findings showed that dissolution activation efficiency significantly correlated to various parameters, that can be optimized to be the tetramethyl guanidine (TMG)/CO2/DMSO solvent system at 50 °C, 2 MPa of CO2 for 2 h, by which a complete transformation the cellulose crystalline structure from I to II, and 100% glucose yield were achieved. The recyclability and usability are also investigated.

Abstract
Gelation and rheological behaviors of cellulose/CO2-based reversible ionic liquid (RIL)/DMSO solutions were investigated. The exponents of specific viscosity ηsp versus concentration c were determined for wood pulp (WP) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) solutions. The complex viscosity acquired using oscillatory shear closely follows the steady shear viscosity, thus revealing the applicability of Cox-Merz rule. The influence of RIL content in the solvent on apparent viscosities, activation energy, intrinsic viscosities, specific viscosity-c[η] master curve, and relaxation time were also investigated. Gelation occurred in this cellulose solution system due to thermal-induced CO2 release from the decomposition of the CO2-based reversible ionic liquid. The formed gel was stable in air, but re-dissolved when exposed to CO2, indicating the switch-on and switch-off effects of CO2 in cellulose dissolution and gelation.
