Abstract
Chitosan (CS) based nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated via an ionic gelation reaction modified by flaxseed gum (FG) or sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP). The average particle size, morphology, interfacial tension, and wettability of NPs were characterized. The particle size of CS-STPP-HA (hyaluronic acid)-FA (ferulic acid) NPs and CS-FG-HA-FA NPs was 400.8 nm and 262.4 nm, respectively under the optimized conditions of CS/STPP = 5:1 (w/w) or CS/FG = 1:1 (v/v) with HA concentration of 0.25 mg/mL and FA dosage of 25 μM. FG acted as a good alternative for STPP to form particles with CS in stabilizing Pickering emulsion with an internal diacylglycerol (DAG) phase of 50-80 % (v/v). The complex nanoparticles had high surface activity and contact angle close to 90 °C, being able to tightly packed at the droplet surface. The emulsions had high thermal, ionic and oxidative stability. With the aid of moisturizing polysaccharides and DAG oil, the emulsions had a good sustained-release ability for FA with deeper penetration and retention into the dermis of the skin. Thus, FG and HA-based NPs serve as green vehicles for the fabrication of novel Pickering emulsions and possess great potential to be applied as a delivery system for lipophilic active agents in functional food and cosmetic products.

Abstract
The present paper aims to use natural biodegradable polymers of chitosan (CS) and cellulose (CEL) to synthesize green chitosan-cellulose (CS-CEL) nanocomposite as a new clarifying agent. This is the cutting-edge of the sugar industry's clarification process. The CS-CEL nanocomposite showed outstanding results in zeta potential analysis, with a maximum value (+) 57.73 mV, leading to remarkableresults in coloradsorption via electrostatic attraction. It was also observed that CS-CEL has high mechanical stability. When CS and CS-CEL nanocomposite were used in the clarification of sugarcane (MJ), the findings demonstrated an improvement in colorremoval of up to 8.7% using CS and 18.1%using CS-CEL nanocomposite compared to currently phosphotation clarification process. Also, Turbidity decreased using CS-CEL nanocomposite compared to the traditional phosphotation clarification process. Overall, we can conclude that CS-CEL nanocomposite has considerable efficiency in sugarcane juice clarification process as a green biodegradable adsorbent and flocculating material to produce sulfur-free sugar.

Abstract
In this study, chitosan (CS) film containing covalent organic frameworks (COFs) immobilized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were developed for food packaging with improved antibacterial activities and film properties. COFs-AgNPs were fabricated via in-situ synthesis of immobilizing AgNPs on COFs. Transmission electron microscope, Zeta potential, X-ray diffraction, element mapping and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the successful fabrication of COFs-AgNPs, and COFs-AgNPs showed superior antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. Furthermore, the as-prepared COFs-AgNPs composite was further used to fabricate CS composite films (CS/COFs-AgNPs) by a solution casting method. The findings showed that the tensile strength of the nanocomposite films enhanced dramatically with the increase of the COFs-AgNPs content, while the UV-visible light barrier property, water swelling and solubility properties, and water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased significantly. Not only that, the CS/COFs-AgNPs nanocomposite films also showed outstanding antibacterial activity and effectively prolonged the storage time of white crucian carp (Carassius auratus). As a result, CS/COFs-AgNPs nanocomposite films show great potential in active food packaging.

Abstract
This study investigates a fast dissolution and regeneration pretreatment to produce regenerated cellulose nanofibers (RCNFs) via mechanical disintegration. Two cellulose pulps, namely, birch and dissolving pulps, with degree of polymerizations of 1800 and 3600, respectively, were rapidly dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) by using tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) as aqueous electrolyte at room temperature. When TEAOH (35 wt % in water) was added to the pulp-DMSO dispersion (pulp:DMSO and TEAOH:DMSO weight ratios of 1:90 and 1:9, respectively), 95% of the dissolving pulp and 85% of the birch pulp fibers dissolved almost immediately. Addition of water caused the regeneration of cellulose without any chemical modification and only a minor decrease of DP, whereas the crystallinity structure of cellulose transformed from cellulose I to cellulose II. The regenerated cellulose could then be mechanically disintegrated into nanosized fibers with only a few passes through a microfluidizer, and RCNF showed fibrous structure. The specific tensile strength of the film produced from both RCNFs exceeded 100 kN·m/kg, and overall mechanical properties of RCNF produced from birch pulp were in line with reference CNF produced by using extensive mechanical disintegration. Although the thermal stability of RCNFs was slightly lower compared to their corresponding original cellulose pulp, the onset temperature of degradation of RCNFs was over 270 °C.

Abstract
Dewatering in the preparation of cellulose nanopapers can take up to a few hours, which is a notable bottleneck in the commercialization of nanopapers. As a solution, we report a filtration-free method that is capable of preparing lactic acid-modified cellulose nanopapers within a few minutes. The bleached cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), obtained using a Masuko grinder, were functionalized by sonication-assisted lactic acid modification and centrifuged at 14 000 rpm to achieve a doughlike, concentrated mass. The concentrated CNFs were rolled into a wet sheet and dried in a vacuum drier to obtain nanopapers. The nanopaper preparation time was 10 min, which is significantly faster than the earlier time period reported in the literature (up to a few hours of preparation time). The mechanical properties of nanopaper were comparable to the previous values reported for nanopapers. In addition, the method was successfully used to prepare highly conductive functional nanopapers containing carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes.

Polysaccharide-Based Packaging Functionalized with Inorganic Nanoparticles for Food Preservation. POLYSACCHARIDES 2021. Abstract
Functionalization of polysaccharide-based packaging incorporating inorganic nanoparticles for food preservation is an active research area. This review summarizes the use of polysaccharide-based materials functionalized with inorganic nanoparticles (TiO2, ZnO, Ag, SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Zr, MgO, halloysite, and montmorillonite) to develop hybrid packaging for fruit, vegetables, meat (lamb, minced, pork, and poultry), mushrooms, cheese, eggs, and Ginkgo biloba seeds preservation. Their effects on quality parameters and shelf life are also discussed. In general, treated fruit, vegetables, mushrooms, and G. biloba seeds markedly increased their shelf life without significant changes in their sensory attributes, associated with a slowdown effect in the ripening process (respiration rate) due to the excellent gas exchange and barrier properties that effectively prevented dehydration, weight loss, enzymatic browning, microbial infections by spoilage and foodborne pathogenic bacteria, and mildew apparition in comparison with uncoated or polysaccharide-coated samples. Similarly, hybrid packaging showed protective effects to preserve meat products, cheese, and eggs by preventing microbial infections and lipid peroxidation, extending the food product’s shelf life without changes in their sensory attributes. According to the evidence, polysaccharide-hybrid packaging can preserve the quality parameters of different food products. However, further studies are needed to guarantee the safe implementation of these organic–inorganic packaging materials in the food industry.

Abstract
This study focusses on the effect of chitosan coating with eggshell membranes for the reduction of different organic pollutants. Chickens eggs were collected from the local market and utilized to extract the enrich eggshell membranes (ESM). The chicken eggshell membranes are abundant waste material which is inexpensive and illustrates remarkable physiognomies for many possible applications. Fresh fibers/strips coated by chitosan (CS) were prepared by mixing the eggshell membranes with CS solution (2 wt%/v) in different proportions i.e., 10 %, 30 %, 50 %, 60 %, 70 %, 80 %, and 90 %. These strips were then templated with copper and iron metal nanoparticles by putting them in their metal ions aqueous solution to adsorb the metals ions and were then reduced to zero-valent metal nanoparticles (MNPS) by using NaBH4 aqueous solution. These prepared materials (MNPS@ESM-CS) were characterized by using XRD, XPS, FE-SEM, and EDS to confirm the successful preparation of MNPs over the surface of ESM coated with CS. Afterwards, these prepared materials were investigated as a catalyst for the reduction of different organic pollutants, such as 4-nitroaniline (4-NA), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and methylene blue (MB) dye. The catalytic efficiency of ESM was enhanced 5.7-fold by adding only 20 % CS solution. It was observed that Cu@ESM-CS-80 % took 7 min for reduction of 4-NA, 6 min for 4-NP, and 7 min for MB dye. The reusability of the catalytic strip was also investigated for four cycles and found efficient and can be easily recovered by simply pulling it from the reaction mixture.

Abstract
Research on nanocomposite film from natural polymers such as cellulose and chitosan is of great importance to promote the development and highly efficient utilization of green and renewable bioresources. In this study, enzymatic pretreatment cellulose nanofibril (ETCNF) derived from licorice residues was prepared, and further processed into nanocomposite film with addition of chitosan nanofibril (CHN). This study focused on the effects of CHN dosage on the main properties of resultant nanocomposite film in terms of crystallinity, thermal stability, light transmittance, hydrophobicity, mechanical properties, and antibacterial activity. The results showed that ETCNF/CHN nanocomposite film exhibited good hydrophobicity especially at higher dosage of CHN, good light transmittance and mechanical properties (tensile strain can reach 39.6 MPa for ETCNF/CHN-10.0%). The as-prepared ETCNF/CHN nanocomposite film also showed good antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. It was expected that the ETCNF/CHN nanocomposite film would help to realize transformation and high value-added utilization of these biomass residues.

Abstract
A novel nanocomposite film was developed by incorporating functionalized carbon nanotube (PCNT) and gallic acid (GA) into carboxymethyl konjac glucomannan (CKGM) and gelatin (GL) matrix. The influences of the PCNT content on the structural, morphological, mechanical, barrier, thermal and antimicrobial properties of CKGM/GL nanocomposite film were discussed. The structure of PCNT@CKGM/GL nanocomposite film was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, and AFM. The crystal structure and thermal ability of the film were generated by XRD and TGA-DTG. The analyses of FT-IR revealed that the amide linkage and strong hydrogen bonding were formed between CKGM, GL, and PCNT. Moreover, the characterization of mechanical properties, moisture barrier, and antimicrobial activities indicated the benefits of adding PCNT into CKGM/GL films. The results suggested that the PCNT@CKGM/GL films exhibited antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Therefore, such antimicrobial nanocomposite films have the potential of maintaining the quality and prolong the shelf life of food products.
