Prussian blue-embedded carboxymethyl cellulose nanofibril membranes for removing radioactive cesium from aqueous solution

The rapid development of nuclear energy in China has led to increased attention to the treatment of radioactive wastewaters. Herein, a novel magnetic adsorbent, magnetic Prussian blue‑molybdenum disulfide (PB/Fe3O4/MoS2) nanocomposite, was prepared by a simple in-situ fixation of ferric oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) and Prussian Blue (PB) shell layers on the surface of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets carrier. The prepared PB/Fe3O4/MoS2 nanocomposites adsorbent displayed excellent fast magnetic separation and adsorption capacity of Cs+ (Qm = 80.51 mg/g) from water. The adsorption behavior of Cs+ by PB/Fe3O4/MoS2 conformed to Langmuir isothermal and second-order kinetic model, which belonged to chemical adsorption and endothermic reaction. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of PB/Fe3O4/MoS2 to Cs+ has reached 90 % in less than 110 min. Moreover, the adsorption properties of PB/Fe3O4/MoS2 remained good in the pH range of 2-7. Based on this, PB/Fe3O4/MoS2 complex was a fast and high selectivity adsorption material for Cs+, which was expected to be used in the practical treatment of cesium-containing radioactive wastewater.

High hydrophobic ZIF-8@cellulose nanofibers/chitosan double network aerogel for oil adsorbent and oil/water separation

Ultralight aerogels with low bulk density, highly porous nature, and functional performance have received significant focus in the field of water pollution treatment. Here, high-crystallinity, large surface-aera metal frame-work (ZIF-8) was efficiently utilized to assist in the preparation of ultralight yet highly oil and organic solvent adsorption capacity, double-network cellulose nanofibers/chitosan-based aerogels through a physical entanglement and scalable freeze-drying approach. After chemical vapor deposition with methyltrimethoxysilane, a hydrophobic surface was obtained with a water contact angle of 132.6°. The synthetic ultralight aerogel had low density (15.87 mg/cm³) and high porosity (99.01 %). Moreover, the aerogel had a three-dimensional porous structure, which endowed it with high adsorption capacity (35.99 to 74.55 g/g) for organic solvent, and outstanding cyclic stability (>88 % of the adsorption capacity after 20 cycles). At the same time, aerogel removes oil from various oil/water mixtures by gravity alone and has excellent separation performance. This work holding excellent properties in terms of convenient, low-cost, scalability to manufacture environmentally friendly biomass-based materials for oily water pollution treatment.

Tannic acid-assisted in-situ interfacial formation of Prussian blue-assembled adsorptive membranes for radioactive cesium removal

There is a growing interest in advanced materials that can effectively treat wastewater contaminated with radioactive cesium (¹³⁷Cs), which is an extremely hazardous material. Here, we report a new class of Cs-adsorptive membranes compactly assembled with Cs-adsorptive Prussian blue (PB) particles. The PB particle assembly was formed via an in-situ interfacial reaction between two PB precursors in the presence of tannic acid (TA) as a binder on a porous support. While the interfacial reaction enabled the formation of a defect-less PB network, TA enhanced the PB-PB and PB-support compatibilities, consequently producing a uniform, densely packed PB assembly near the support surface. The fabricated TA-assisted PB membrane (PB/TA-M) synergistically rejected Cs via a combination of adsorption and membrane filtration, although adsorption predominantly determined Cs rejection initially. Hence, the PB/TA-M membrane showed considerably higher Cs removal performance than commercial nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) polyamide (PA) membranes for a sufficiently long operation time. Furthermore, the PB/TA-M membrane displayed excellent radioactive ¹³⁷Cs removal performance, significantly exceeding those of commercial NF and RO PA membranes due to its higher radiation stability, indicating its viability for application in treating actual radioactive wastewater.

Nanocellulose-Based Adsorbents for Heavy Metal Ion

Heavy metal ions in industrial sewage constitute a serious threat to human health. Nanocellulose-based adsorbents are emerging as an environmentally friendly material platform for heavy metal ion removal based on their unique properties, which include high specific surface area, excellent mechanical properties, and biocompatibility. In this review, we cover the most recent works on nanocellulose-based adsorbents for heavy metal ion removal and present an in-depth discussion of the modification technologies for nanocellulose in the process of assembling high-performance heavy ion adsorbents. By introducing functional groups, such as amino, carboxyl, aldehyde, and thiol, the assembled nanocellulose-based adsorbents both remove single heavy metal ions and can selectively adsorb multiple heavy ions in water. Finally, the remaining challenges of nanocellulose-based adsorbents are pointed out. We anticipate that this review will provide indispensable guidance on the application of nanocellulose-based adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal ions.

Biofibrous nanomaterials for extracting strategic metal ions from water

Strategic metals play an indispensable role in the related industries. Their extraction and recovery from water are of great significance due to both their rapid consumption and environmental concern. Biofibrous nanomaterials have shown great advantages in capturing metal ions from water. Recent progress in extraction of typical strategic metal ions such as noble metal ions, nuclear metal ions, and Li-battery related metal ions is reviewed here using typical biological nanofibrils like cellulose nanofibrils, chitin nanofibrils, and protein nanofibrils, as well as their assembly forms like fibers, aerogels/hydrogels, and membranes. An overview of advances in material design and preparation, extraction mechanism, dynamics/thermodynamics, and performance improvement in the last decade is provided. And at last, we propose the current challenges and future perspectives for promoting biological nanofibrous materials toward extracting strategic metal ions in practical conditions of natural seawater, brine, and wastewater.

Cesium ion adsorption and desorption on electrospun mesoporous silica nanofibers immobilized with Prussian blue

To fabricate an efficient Cs ion adsorbent and prevent unexpected loss of Prussian blue (PB) colloidal particles during use, PB was immobilized on the surface of electrospun mesoporous silica nanofibers (MSFs) via a newly developed method of double exposure to Fe (III) ions. To introduce PB on MSFs, the MSFs were functionalized with ethylenediamine moiety to bind to Fe (III) ions, which would firmly anchor PB. MSFs were pretreated with Fe (III) ions and exposed to K₄ [Fe(II) (CN)₆] to form PB. We found that this process did not provide a sufficient PB amount on the MSFs. To increase the PB amount, after initial PB formation, the MSFs were treated with Fe (III) ions again so that the unreacted K₄ [Fe(II) (CN)₆] remaining on the MSFs could become PB. An investigation of the adsorption isotherms and kinetics of the nanofibrous adsorbent indicated that monolayer chemisorption had occurred. The maximum Cs ion adsorption capacity using the method of double exposure to Fe (III) ions was determined to be 14.66 mg/g, which was higher by a factor of 2.24 than the case that was not prepared by this method. Cs ions were selectively adsorbed over other cations and could be removed in both acidic and basic conditions, presumably because of the robust MSFs.

One-pot synthesis of magnetic Prussian blue for the highly selective removal of thallium(I) from wastewater: Mechanism and implications

Thallium (Tl) often enters the environment via mineral exploitation and utilization. The main restriction of Tl removal is the interference of high concentrations of coexisting ions in wastewater, therefore, enhancing the selectivity for Tl is essential to its treatment. Magnetic Prussian blue particles (Fe₃O₄@PB), an ion-sieving material with an open structure, were synthesized through a "one-pot" method at room temperature for the highly selective removal of Tl⁺. The removal percentage of Tl⁺ was over 92% even when the concentration of coexisting ions (e.g. Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Pb²⁺) were 10,000 times higher than the initial concentration of Tl⁺. The maximal experimental removal capacity was 528 mg Tl/g Fe₃O₄@PB, and the removal percentage remained steady at pH 3-10. The high selectivity of Fe₃O₄@PB for Tl⁺ is attributed to the fact that hydrated Tl⁺ has a smaller hydrated diameter and a lower hydration free energy than other coexisting ions, while the rapid adsorption kinetics of Tl⁺ results from the negative surface charge and the network of nanocapillaries of the Fe₃O₄@PB. Overall, a new low-cost material that is easy to synthesize and has superior Tl⁺ removal capacity with extremely high selectivity for Tl⁺ was obtained for effective magnetic removal of thallium from wastewater.

Highly-efficient PVDF adsorptive membrane filtration based on chitosan@CNTs-COOH simultaneous removal of anionic and cationic dyes

An adsorptive membrane filtration based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with chitosan (CS) and carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-COOH) is prepared by method of phase conversion, and the PVDF-CS@CNTs-COOH membranes can effectively separate anionic and cationic dye wastewater. Compared to pure PVDF membranes, PVDF-CS@CNTs-COOH increases pure water flux from 36.39 (L·m^-2·h^-1) to 85.25 (L·m^-2·h^-1), an increase of nearly 230%. The membrane exhibits excellent rejection performance in the filtration of six types of dye wastewater. The modified membranes also performed well in terms of rejection of mixed anionic and cationic dyes and also have a high performance in recycling, with a flux of over 94% for both anionic and cationic dyes. In addition, the adsorption curve fitting results showed that the adsorption process was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model and Langmuir mode.

Simultaneous removal of radioactive cesium and strontium from seawater using a highly efficient Prussian blue-embedded alginate aerogel

Radioactive cesium (¹³⁷Cs) and strontium (⁹⁰Sr) contaminants in seawater have been a serious problem since the Fukushima accident in 2011 due to their long-term health risks. For the effective and simultaneous removal of radioactive cesium (¹³⁷Cs) and strontium (⁹⁰Sr) from seawater, a Prussian blue (PB)-immobilized alginate aerogel (PB-alginate aerogel) was fabricated and its adsorption performance was evaluated. PB nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in the three-dimensional porous alginate aerogel matrix, which enabled facile contact with seawater. The PB-alginate aerogel exhibited Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺ adsorption capacities of 19.88 and 20.10 mg/g, respectively, without substantial interference because Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺ adsorption occurred at different adsorption sites on the composite. The Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺ adsorption onto the PB-alginate aerogel was completed within 3 h due to the highly porous morphology of the aerogel. The Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺ adsorption behaviors on the PB-alginate aerogel were systematically investigated under various conditions. Compared with Cs⁺ adsorption, Sr²⁺ adsorption onto the PB-alginate aerogel was more strongly influenced by competing cations (Na⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, and K⁺) in seawater. ¹³⁷Cs and ⁹⁰Sr removal tests in real seawater demonstrated the practical feasibility of the PB-alginate aerogel as an adsorbent.

Securely anchored Prussian blue nanocrystals on the surface of porous PAAm sphere for high and selective cesium removal

Prussian blue (PB) has been well known as a pigment crystal to selectively sequestrate the radioactive cesium ion released from aqueous solutions owing to PB cage size similar to the cesium ion. Because the small size of PB is hard to deal with, the adsorbents containing PB have been prepared in the form of composites causing low sequestration efficiency of cesium. In this study, securely anchored PB nanocrystals on the surface of millimeter-sized porous polyacrylamide (PAAm) spheres (PB@PAAm) have been prepared by the crystallization of PB on the Fe³⁺ adsorbed PAAm. The securely anchored PB nanocrystals have been demonstrated to be selective and efficient adsorbents for sequestration of the radioactive cesium. The well-interconnected-spherical pores and millimeter-sized diameter of the PB@PAAm adsorbents facilitated permeation of Cs⁺ into the adsorbent and ease of handling respectively. Especially the well-interconnected-spherical pores allowed that PB@PAAm showed 90% of its maximum Cs⁺ adsorption capacity within 30 min. The PB@PAAm showed an outstanding Cs⁺ capture ability of 374 mg/g, high removal efficiency of 85% even at low concentration of Cs⁺ (10 ng/L), and superior selectivity of Cs⁺ against interference ions of Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, and Ca²⁺.

Prussian Blue: A Safe Pigment with Zeolitic-Like Activity

Prussian blue (PB) and PB analogues (PBA) are coordination network materials that present important similarities with zeolites concretely with their ability of adsorbing cations. Depending on the conditions of preparation, which is cheap and easy, PB can be classified into soluble PB and insoluble PB. The zeolitic-like properties are mainly inherent to insoluble form. This form presents some defects in its cubic lattice resulting in an open structure. The vacancies make PB capable of taking up and trapping ions or molecules into the lattice. Important adsorption characteristics of PB are a high specific area (370 m2 g-1 determined according the BET theory), uniform pore diameter, and large pore width. PB has numerous applications in many scientific and technological fields. PB are assembled into nanoparticles that, due to their biosafety and biocompatibility, can be used for biomedical applications. PB and PBA have been shown to be excellent sorbents of radioactive cesium and radioactive and nonradioactive thallium. Other cations adsorbed by PB are K+, Na+, NH4+, and some divalent cations. PB can also capture gaseous molecules, hydrocarbons, and even luminescent molecules such as 2-aminoanthracene. As the main adsorptive application of PB is the selective removal of cations from the environment, it is important to easily separate the sorbent of the purified solution. To facilitate this, PB is encapsulated into a polymer or coats a support, sometimes magnetic particles. Finally, is remarkable to point out that PB can be recycled and the adsorbed material can be recovered.
