Abstract
Colon specific delivery of therapeutics have gained much attention of pharmaceutical researchers in the recent past. Colonic specific targeting of drugs is used not only for facilitating absorption of protein or peptide drugs, but also localization of therapeutic agents in colon to treat several colonic disorders. Among various biopolymers, guar gum (GG) exhibits pH dependent swelling, which allows colon specific release of drug. GG also shows microbial degradation in the colonic environment which makes it a suitable excipient for developing colon specific drug delivery systems. The uncontrolled swelling and hydration of GG can be controlled by structural modification or by grafting with another polymeric moiety. Several graft copolymerized guar gum derivatives are investigated for colon targeting of drugs. The efficacy of various guar gum derivatives are evaluated for colon specific delivery of drugs. The reviewed literature evidenced the potentiality of guar gum in localizing drugs in the colonic environment. This review focuses on the synthesis of several guar gum derivatives and their application in developing various colon specific drug delivery systems including matrix tablets, coated formulations, nano or microparticulate delivery systems and hydrogels.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of varying doses of dietary aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) on the growth, intestinal health, and muscle quality of hybrid grouper. Four diets with varying AFB1 concentrations (0, 30, 445, and 2,230 μg kg-1) were used. Elevating AFB1 concentrations led to a decline in growth indexes, specifically the weight gain rate and the specific growth rate, although the survival rate remained unchanged. Morphological indicators showed a dose-dependent decline with AFB1 exposure. Intestinal MDA content and hindgut reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels increased, while antioxidant indexes and digestive enzymes decreased with higher AFB1 levels. AFB1 negatively influenced hindgut tight junction protein and antioxidant-related gene expression while promoting inflammation-related gene expression. The presence of AFB1 in the experiment led to a decrease in beneficial intestinal bacteria, such as Prevotella, and an increase in harmful intestinal bacteria, such as Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group. Muscle lipid and unsaturated fatty acid content significantly decreased, while muscle protein and liver AFB1 content increased dramatically with higher AFB1 concentrations. AFB1 caused myofibrillar cleavage and myofilament damage, leading to increased spaces between muscle fibers. In conclusion, diets with AFB1 levels exceeding 30 μg kg-1 inhibited hybrid grouper growth, while levels surpassing 445 μg kg-1 resulted in hindgut ROS accumulation, inflammation, elevated intestinal permeability, reduced digestive enzyme activity, and compromised muscle quality.

Abstract
The anoxic/oxic systems are a widely used biological strategy for wastewater treatment. However, little is known about the performance and microbial community correlation of different combined bioreactors in the treatment of high-COD and high-salinity hydraulic fracturing flowback and produced water (HF-FPW). In this study, the performance of Up-flow anaerobic sludge bed-bio-contact oxidation reactor (UASB-BCOR) and Fixed-bed baffled reactor (FBR-BCOR) in treating HF-FPW was investigated and compared. The results suggested the FBR-BCOR could efficiently remove COD, SS, NH4+-N, and oil pollutants, and it exhibited better resistance to the negative interference of hydraulic shock load on it. Besides, the correlation analysis first disclosed the key functional genera during the degradation process, including Ignavibacterium, Ellin6067, and Zixibacteria. Moreover, network analysis revealed that the difference of microbial co-occurrence network structure is the main driving factor for the difference of bioreactor processing capacity. This work demonstrates the feasibility and potential of FBR-BCOR in treating HF-FPW.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the structural characteristics and in vitro fermentation patterns of polysaccharides from Boletus mushrooms. Polysaccharides were solubilized from fruit bodies of selected mushrooms Boletus auripes, B. bicolor, and B. griseus using subcritical water extraction. Boletus polysaccharides were characterized for their general physicochemical pattern, constituent monosaccharides and molecular weight. A simulated in vitro fermentation model was used to study the utilization of Boletus polysaccharides by the gut microbiota and their consequent modulation of microbial communities. Results showed that the main constituent monosaccharides of Boletus polysaccharides were glucose, galactose and mannose, followed by fucose, xylose and rhamnose, with glucose being the most abundant. The polysaccharides from B. bicolor and B. griseus exhibited a relatively high proportion of galactose and mannose, respectively. Boletus polysaccharides exhibited a wide range of molecular weights (5 kDa to 2000 kDa), which covered multiple polysaccharide populations, but the proportions of these populations varied among the samples. Boletus polysaccharides were gradually utilized by the human fecal microbiota, promoting the production of SCFAs. Boletus polysaccharides contributed to a healthier gut microbiota composition by increasing the relative abundance of beneficial bacterial genera such as Bacteroides and Faecalibacterium and reducing the relative abundance of harmful bacterial genera such as Sutterella and Escherichia-Shigella. B. bicolor polysaccharides showed better fermentability and prebiotic effects than the other Boletus polysaccharide groups. Therefore, the consumption of select Boletus mushrooms, particularly B. bicolor, could be a potential approach to obtain polysaccharides for microbiota modulation and to support gut health.

Effects of Physical Properties of Konjac Glucomannan on Appetite Response of Rats. Foods 2023; 12:foods12040743. Abstract
Dietary fiber has been widely used in designing foods with a high satiating capacity, as the use of satiety-enhancing food is considered to be a promising strategy for combating obesity and the overweight condition. In the present study, partially degraded konjac glucomannan (DKGM) diets with different water-holding capacities, swelling capacities, and viscosities were used to feed rats to investigate the effects of the fiber's physical properties in regulating the appetite response of the animals. The results showed that the mass and water content of the gastrointestinal chyme increased as the diet's physical properties were enhanced by the DKGM, which increased the stomach distention of the rats and promoted satiation. Besides, the hydrated DKGM elevated the chyme's viscosity, and the retention time of the digesta in the small intestine was prolonged significantly, which resulted in an increased concentration of cholecystokinin-8, glucagon-like peptide 1, and peptide tyrosine-tyrosine in the plasma, thus helping to maintain the satiety of rats. Furthermore, the results of the behavioral satiety sequence and meal pattern analysis showed that DKGM in the diets is more likely to reduce the food intake of rats by enhancing satiety rather than satiation, and will finally inhibit excessive weight gain. In conclusion, the physical properties of dietary fiber are highly related to the appetite response, which is a powerful tool in designing food with a high satiating capacity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Zein as a sole material is not suitable for technological applications since it is not flexible. A possible solution to extend the applications of zein is the formation of zein-polysaccharide complexes. As a first step, sonication parameters were optimized to obtain finer emulsions formulated with zein, rosemary essential oil as food preservative, and sunflower oil, by means of response surface methodology. After the formation of these guar- or diutan-zein complexes the rheological properties of these food emulsions were evaluated. RESULTS An increase in sonication power, sonication time and cycles provoked a decrease in mean droplet size and a lack of recoalescence. The optimized emulsion was the starting point to form two different complexes: zein with diutan gum and zein with guar gum at different concentrations. Rheological properties as well as the microstructure observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were analyzed. Interestingly, zein-guar gum complexes did not form a rheological gel; as a consequence, emulsions containing them seem to undergo a destabilization process with aging time. In contrast, emulsions formulated with zein-diutan gum presented a 3D network, observed by FESEM technique and proved by rheological measurements. CONCLUSION While emulsions containing zein-guar gum complexes did not form networks to stabilize oil droplets, zein-diutan gum complexes did. This work brings to light the importance of the selection of polysaccharide used in food emulsions formulated with zein. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.
