Abstract
As the industrialization process accelerates, environmental pollution issues are becoming increasingly severe, especially water pollution, which poses a serious threat to the ecosystem and human health. Pollutants in water bodies that are difficult to degrade not only exert toxicity to aquatic life but may also accumulate through the food chain, affecting human health. Therefore, the development of efficient and environmentally friendly pollutant treatment technologies has become a popular topic in the field of environmental science. Chitosan (CS), as a natural polysaccharide, is considered an ideal choice for preparing environmentally friendly green materials due to its excellent compatibility, and rich functional groups. CS-based hydrogels, with their unique three-dimensional network structure, high specific surface area, and good hydrophilicity, show great potential in environmental purification. This review aims to systematically summarize and analyze the latest research progress of high-performance chitosan-based hydrogels (HPCSHs) in the field of environment, exploring their performance characteristics, enhancement strategies, and sustainability. Firstly, the structure and characteristics of HPCSHs are introduced, with an emphasis on their adsorptivity, degradability, reusability, environmental responsiveness, biocompatibility, and multifunctionality. Subsequently, four enhancement strategies for hydrogel performance are discussed in detail, including crosslinking modification, surface functionalization, nanomaterials composite, and structure regulation. Then, the environmental impact and sustainability of HPCSHs are assessed. Finally, the current challenges and future development trends are explored. This review provides references and guidance for the research of HPCSHs in the environmental field, offering new solutions for environmental pollution issues.

Abstract
In this study, we synthesized a fluorescent material by modifying the C-2 amino group of carboxymethyl chitosan with a rhodamine B derivative, which was proposed and demonstrated using 1H NMR and FT-IR measurements. A series of experiments including selectivity, sensitivity, reversibility, pH, and water content were conducted to investigate the fluorometric and colorimetric properties of the grafted polymer. Utilizing a Fe3+-induced ring-opening mechanism of the rhodamine B spirolactam, we found that the grafted polymer exhibited a highly selective fluorescence response to Fe3+, with enhanced fluorescence at 583 nm compared to other tested metal ions and anions, accompanied by the characteristic absorption peak of rhodamine B that appeared at 561 nm with a noticeable color change from colorless to pink, facilitating visual observation. Additionally, the modified probe, composed of carboxymethyl chitosan, was easily regenerated through treatment with EDTA.

Abstract
The combination of bio-imaging with photodynamic therapy (PDT) to accomplish theranostics is promising in cancer treatment. Three chitosan-naphthalimide probes were studied in this work. 4-(5-Bromothiophen-2-yl)-1,8-naphthalic anhydride was first synthesized, and then reacted with chitosan to obtain the macromolecules (CS-N-Br). The recognition group thiomorpholine or its derivatives were introduced into CS-N-Br to obtain nano-probes (CS-N-ML, CS-N-BSZ, CS-N-FSQ) eventually. The studies revealed that CS-N-ML and CS-N-FSQ exhibit high selectivity and can specifically recognize HClO and H2S. CS-N-ML and CS-N-FSQ can perform exogenous and endogenous confocal imaging of HClO and H2S in cells also. CS-N-ML's ability to target lysosomes positions indicated it could act as a lysosome-specific probe. It was discovered that the probes generate superoxide anions (O2•-) via a Type I mechanism. This discovery endows the probes with high photosensitizing activity even under hypoxic conditions. There is a positive correlation between the extent of the conjugated system and the photosensitivity of the probes, indicating that an enhanced conjugation leads to increased photosensitivity. Upon light irradiation, the probes generate ROS within HeLa cells. These results suggested that these probes can achieve theranostics for diseases associated with abnormal levels of HClO and H2S.

Abstract
To replace traditional petrochemical-based thermal insulation materials, in this work, the chitosan (CHI)/alginate (ALG) (CA) aerogels with three-dimensional hierarchical pore network structure were constructed by compositing CHI and ALG using a synergistic strategy of hydrogen bonding dissolution and covalent crosslinking. The structure and properties were further regulated by crosslinking the CA aerogels with epichlorohydrin (ECH). The CA aerogels exhibited various forms of covalent crosslinking, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, with hydrogen bonding content reaching 79.12 %. The CA aerogels showed an excellent three-dimensional hierarchical pore network structure, with an average pore size minimum of 15.92 nm. The structure regulation of CA aerogels obtained excellent compressive properties, with an increase of stress and strain by 137.61 % and 45.05 %, which can support a heavy object 5000 times its weight. Additionally, CA aerogels demonstrate excellent thermal insulation properties and low thermal conductivity, comparable to commercially available insulation materials. More importantly, CA aerogels have good cyclic insulation stability and thermal properties, and they have a flame retardancy rating of V-0, which shows the stability of insulation properties and excellent safety. CA aerogels provide new ideas for the development of biomass thermal insulation materials and are expected to be candidates for thermal management applications.

Abstract
Hydrogels are widely used as excellent drug carriers in the field of biomedicine. However, their application in medicine is limited by their poor mechanical properties and softness. To improve the mechanical properties of hydrogels, a novel triple-network amphiphilic hydrogel with three overlapping crosslinking methods using a one-pot free-radical polymerization was synthesized in this study. Temperature-sensitive and pH-sensitive monomers were incorporated into the hydrogel to confer stimulus responsiveness, making the hydrogel stimuli-responsive. The successful synthesis of the hydrogel was confirmed using techniques, such as proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In order to compare and analyze the properties of physically crosslinked hydrogels, physically-chemically double-crosslinked hydrogels, and physically-chemically clicked triple-crosslinked hydrogels, various tests were conducted on the gels' morphology, swelling behavior, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and drug loading capacity. The results indicate that the triple-crosslinked hydrogel maintains low swelling, high mechanical strength, and good thermal stability while not significantly compromising its drug delivery capability.

Abstract
Chitosan, as a natural biomass material, is green, recyclable, sustainable and well biocompatible. The molecular chain is rich in active groups such as amino and hydroxyl groups, and its preparation of fluorescent probes has the advantages of biocompatibility and efficient detection performance. In this study, a bis(benzaldehyde) (BHD) fluorescent functional molecule was designed. Then a series of fluorescent chitosan-based hydrogel films (CSBHD) were prepared using chitosan as raw material and BHD as cross-linking agent. As a fluorescent probe for metal ions, CSBHD was able to efficiently detect Fe2+ with a linear correlation of fluorescence intensity in the range of 0-160 μM, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.55 μM. Moreover, it has excellent adsorption performance for Fe2+ ions, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 223.5 g/mg at 500 mg/L Fe2+ concentration. Finally, we characterised the structure and microscopic morphology of CSBHD films and found that CSBHD as a hydrogel film has a high cross-linking density, good water resistance, excellent thermal stability, strong resistance to swelling, and excellent stability in cycling tests. Hence, it has great potential for application in adsorption and detection of Fe2+ ions. It also provides a good strategy for the application of chitosan based fluorescent probe materials in environmental monitoring and heavy metal ion adsorption.

Abstract
A fluorescent probe (L) of bis Schiff base secondary amine ligand was designed and synthesized from 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, ethylenediamine and salicylaldehyde by condensation and reduction reaction. Its structure was characterized by IR, UV-Vis, LIF, 1HNMR, 13C NMR, MS and elementary analysis. Investigation of binding test indicated that probe L could sensitively and selectively detect Cu2+ ion with striking fluorescent signaling responses in anhydrous ethanol solvent. Results from Job's plot, fluorescent titration, and MS experiments indicated a 1:1 binding ratio between probe L and Cu2+, with a complexation constant of 1.28 × 108 M-1. According to MS, IR and molar conductivity analysis, the mechanism of the probes' detection of Cu2+ may due to CHEF mechanism by the lone electron pairs in the N atom, and the enhancement of the molecular rigidity caused by disruption of intermolecular hydrogen bonding force, which leading to the occurrence of chelation fluorescence enhancement. The detection limit of complexation constant was 2.69 × 10-8 M in the linear range of 0-40 μM, which provided an effective and convenient testing for trace copper in surface water and drinking water.

Abstract
The design and development of a rapid and quantitative method for the detection of heavy metal ions is of great importance for environmental protection. We have prepared a 1,8-Naphthalimide modified cellulose composite fluorescent hydrogel (CENAEA/PAA) with a stereo double network structure. Characterized by excellent hydrogel functional structure and fluorescence detection performance, it can efficiently and selectively identify and detect Cr(VI) with linear quenching in the range of 0-400 μmol/L and detection limit of 0.58 μmol/L for Cr(VI). The results show that the CENAEA/PAA can effectively adsorb Cr(VI) with a maximum adsorption capacity of 189.04 mg/g. Finally, the morphological characteristics, chemical structure, fluorescence properties and adsorption behavior of CENAEA/PAA were analyzed and fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich model. Thus, the present work provides a green and sustainable approach for the synthesis of a functional material that can be used for the detection and adsorption of heavy metal ions.

Abstract
In this work, the preparation of a pH-responsive fluorescent microgel, (NANO-PAMAM-CHT), is presented for the selective detection of Cu2+ and Cr2O72- ions. The NANO-PAMAM-CHT (nanosized polyaminoamide-chitosan microgel) is synthesized via aza-Michael addition reactions in a controlled and stepwise manner in water, using easily affordable starting materials like 1,4-diaminobutane, N,N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide, NIPAM and chitosan. NANO-PAMAM-CHT shows pH-responsive fluorescent properties, whereas the fluorescence intensity shows a pH-responsive change. Due to the selective fluorescence quenching, the microgel can detect both Cu2+ ions and Cr2O72- ions selectively at ambient pH in aqueous medium. Moreover, it can selectively differentiate between Cu2+ ion and Cr2O72- ions at pH ∼3 in water. The limits of detection for Cu2+ ions and Cr2O72- ions are reported as 16.9 μM and 2.62 μM, respectively (lower than the minimum allowed level in drinking water) at pH ∼7. Mechanistic study further reveals the dynamic quenching phenomenon in the presence of Cu2+ ions and static quenching in the presence of Cr2O72- ions.

Abstract
The quality of wine can be affected by excess Cu2+ due to the occurrence of oxidation reactions or precipitation. Therefore, it is essential to use simple and effective testing methods to ensure the Cu2+ content in wine. In this work, we designed and synthesized a rhodamine polymer fluorescent probe (PEG-R). The water solubility of PEG-R was improved by the introduction of polyethylene glycol, which improved the performance and broadened its application in the food field. The PEG-R was characterized by high sensitivity, selectivity and fast response to Cu2+ and was able to complete the response process within 30 s, with approximately 29-fold fluorescence enhancement of the probe after exposure to Cu2+, the limit of detection (LOD) was 1.295 × 10-6 M. The probe can be used for the determination of Cu2+ in living cells, zebrafish, white wine and food products, and it was made into practical gels and test strips.

Abstract
Chitosan is a kind of natural polysaccharide biomass with the second highest content in nature after cellulose, which has good biological properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, hemostasis, mucosal adsorption, non-toxicity, and antibacterial properties. Therefore, hydrogels prepared from chitosan have the advantages of good hydrophilicity, unique three-dimensional network structure, and good biocompatibility, so they have received extensive attention and research in environmental testing, adsorption, medical materials, and catalytic supports. Compared with traditional polymer hydrogels, biomass chitosan-based hydrogels have advantages such as low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, outstanding processability, and low cost. This paper reviews the preparation of various chitosan-based hydrogels using chitosan as raw material and their applications in the fields of medical materials, environmental detection, catalytic carriers, and adsorption. Some views and prospects are put forward for the future research and development of chitosan-based hydrogels, and it is believed that chitosan-based hydrogels will be able to obtain more valuable applications.

Abstract
Chitosan as the plentiful and easily available natural polymer, its solubility in organic solvents is still a challenge. In this article, three different chitosan-based fluorescent co-polymers were prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. They could not only dissolve in several organic solvents, but also could selectively recognize Hg2+/Hg+ ions. Firstly, allyl boron-dipyrrolemethene (bodipy) was prepared, and used as one of the monomers in the subsequent RAFT polymerization. Secondly, chitosan-based chain transfer agent (CS-RAFT) was synthesized through classical reactions for dithioester preparation. Finally, three methacrylic ester monomers and bodipy bearing monomers were polymerized and grafted as branched-chains onto chitosan respectively. By RAFT polymerization, three chitosan-based macromolecular fluorescent probes were prepared. These probes could be readily dissolved in DMF, THF, DCM, and acetone. All of them exhibited the 'turn-on' fluorescence with selective and sensitive detection for Hg2+/Hg+. Among them, chitosan-g-polyhexyl methacrylate-bodipy (CS-g-PHMA-BDP) had the best performance, its fluorescence intensity could be increased to 2.7 folds. In addition, CS-g-PHMA-BDP could be processed into films and coatings. When loading on the filter paper, fluorescent test paper was prepared and it could realize the portable detection of Hg2+/Hg+ ions. These organic-soluble chitosan-based fluorescent probes could enlarge the applications of chitosan.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to investigate the ability of a solid-state material, prepared by crosslinking chitosan with a phenothiazine-based aldehyde, to remove copper (II) ions from aqueous solutions, in a fast and selective manner. The metal uptake experiments, including the retention, sensibility, and selectivity against eight different metal ions, were realized via batch adsorption studies. The capacity of the material to retain copper (II) ions was investigated by spectrophotometric measurements, using poly(ethyleneimine) complexation agent, which allowed detection in a concentration range of 5-500 µM. The forces driving the copper sorption were monitored using various methods, such as FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, SEM-EDAX technique, and optical polarized microscopy, and the adsorption kinetics were assessed by fitting the in vitro sorption data on different mathematical models. The phenothiazine-imine-chitosan material proved high ability to recover copper from aqueous media, reaching a maximum retention capacity of 4.394 g Cu (II)/g adsorbent when using a 0.5 M copper solution, which is an outstanding value compared to other chitosan-based materials reported in the literature to this date. It was concluded that the high ability of the studied xerogel to retain Cu (II) ions was the result of both physio- and chemo-sorption processes. This particular behavior was favored on one hand by the porous nature of the material and on the other hand by the presence of amine, hydroxyl, imine, and amide groups with the role of copper ligands.

Abstract
In this article, a novel metal-organic framework, namely MIL-101(FeII), was firstly synthesized via a facile method. In the presence of H2O2, MIL-101(FeII) possesses excellent peroxidase-like activity toward the classical chromogenic substrate, N,N-Diethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulfate salt (DPD). The substitution of Fe2+ enhances the construction of Fe(II)-oxo nodes and accelerates electrons transfer between DPD and H2O2, thereby improving the peroxidase-mimicking catalytic activity of MIL-101(FeII) nanoenzyme. Additionally, DPD molecules could be adsorbed readily onto the surface of the nanoparticles due to the π-π interaction. The study of Michaelis constant indicates that the MIL-101(FeII) exhibits a higher affinity towards DPD (0.16 mM) in contrast to horseradish peroxidase (0.78 mM). In view of the impressive catalytic performance of MIL-101(FeII), two reliable monitoring platforms for the rapid detection of H2O2 and glucose were established with extremely low detection limits of 18.04 nM and 0.87 μM in the ranges of 40-5000 nM and 1.2-300 μM, respectively. The study of the catalytic mechanism indicates that DPD oxidation is attributed to the hydroxyl radical (·OH) produced from the decomposition of H2O2 catalyzed by MIL-101(FeII). Furthermore, the developed sensor indicates high selectivity and stability and can be effectively appropriate for the detection of H2O2 and glucose in real samples. This work not only provides a novel nanozyme with superior catalytic performance for biological analysis, but also broadens the application field of MIL-101(FeII) material.

Abstract
With the rapid development of the textile industry, a large amount of dyeing wastewater discharge has caused great harm to the ecological environment. In this work, a dual-network, composite hydrogel adsorbent with excellent mechanical properties, good reusability, and large adsorption capacity was prepared by introducing chitosan cross-linked polyvinylamine into the N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide cross-linked polyacrylic acid network. The dual cross-linking network gave the hydrogel excellent mechanical properties with maximum tensile stress and strain up to 1.9 MPa and 920 %. The adsorption capacity of methylene blue on hydrogel was up to 596.14 mg/g. In addition, the prepared hydrogel exhibited good reusability, and their adsorption efficiency remained above 85 % in five consecutive cycles. The adsorption behavior was well fitted by Pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir equation, indicating that the hydrogel was chemisorbed to the dye as a monolayer. The adsorption mechanism analysis showed that the electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding between the functional groups of the hydrogels and methylene blue molecules contributed to the good adsorption capacity. Overall, the synthesized composite hydrogels could be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue dye, particularly from textile industry wastewater.

Abstract
Fluorescent chitosan-based hydrogel for the selective detection and adsorption of Hg2+/Hg+ in aqueous environment was prepared through three-step synthesis strategy. NO2-Boron-dipyrrolemethene (BODIPY) was prepared firstly, and then the -NO2 group was reduced to -NH2 group. Finally, the NH2-BODIPY was introduced to chitosan by Schiff base formation reaction through bi-aldehyde. Eventually, fluorescent chitosan hydrogel was obtained. The as-prepared fluorescent hydrogel probe could detect Hg2+/Hg+ through PET mechanism with the detection limit of 0.3 μM. The recognition site which combines Hg2+/Hg+ is CN, it is just formed in the reaction with chitosan and the amino group on BODIPY. Adsorption capacity of the fluorescent hydrogel is 121 mg·g-1, which is almost seven times of the original chitosan. The isotherm and kinetics of Hg2+/Hg+ removal follows Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetics, respectively. Besides, a series of fluorescent hydrogels were prepared to compare the elasticity, hydropHilicity, fluorescence intensity and adsorption capacity.
