Abstract
Cellulose-based adsorbents have been extensively developed in heavy metal capture and wastewater treatment. However, most of the reported powder adsorbents suffer from the difficulties in recycling due to their small sizes and limitations in detecting the targets for the lack of sensitive sensor moieties in the structure. Accordingly, carbon dots (CDs) were proposed to be encapsulated in cellulosic hydrogel beads to realize the simultaneous detection and adsorption of Hg (II) in water due to their excellent fluorescence sensing performance. Besides, the molding of cellulose was beneficial to its recycling and further reduced the potential environmental risk generated by secondary pollution caused by adsorbent decomposition. In addition, the detection limit of the hydrogel beads towards Hg (II) reached as low as 8.8 × 10-8 M, which was below the mercury effluent standard declared by WHO, exhibiting excellent practicability in Hg (II) detection and water treatment. The maximum adsorption capacity of CB-50 % for Hg (II) was 290.70 mg/g. Moreover, the adsorbent materials also had preeminent stability that the hydrogel beads could maintain sensitive and selective sensing performance towards Hg (II) after 2 months of storage. Additionally, only 3.3% of the CDs leaked out after 2 weeks of immersion in water, ensuring the accuracy of Hg (II) evaluation. Notably, the adsorbent retained over 80% of its original adsorption capacity after five consecutive regeneration cycles, underscoring its robustness and potential for sustainable environmental applications.

Abstract
Various methods have been used to cope with heavy metal ion contamination in wastewater, which caused serious hazards to ecological and human health. Adsorption is one of the most frequent, economical and effective methods for removing these contaminants. Herein, a porous and amino-rich cellulose-based composite adsorbent (PEI-PCS) with anisotropic property was successfully prepared by covalently cross-linking polyethyleneimine on delignified corn straw. Combined with the porosity of straw substrate and the chelating ability of amino group to metal ions, the as-prepared PEI-PCS exhibited universality (various metal ions), rapid adsorption behavior (within 180 min achieve adsorption equilibrium), high adsorption capacity (85.47 mg g-1 for Cu(II)), and good durability (70 % of adsorption efficiency after 5 cycles). In addition, the adsorption process was conformed to pseudo-second-order dynamics and the Langmuir isotherm models. Lastly, the adsorption mechanism was also elucidated. This study provides a sustainable pathway for the manufacture of efficient biomass-based adsorbents and confirms that functionalized corn straw is a promising material for the treatment of heavy metal ions.

Abstract
Chitosan has several shortcomings that limit its practical application for the adsorption of heavy metals: mechanical instability, a challenging separation and recovery process, and low equilibrium capacity. This study describes the synthesis of a magnetic xanthate-modified polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan composite (XMPC) for the efficient removal and recovery of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. The XMPC was synthesized from polyvinyl alcohol, chitosan, and magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles. The XMPC was characterized, and its adsorption performance in removing heavy metal ions was studied under different experimental conditions. The adsorption kinetics fit a pseudo-second-order kinetic model well. This showed that the adsorption of heavy metal ions by the XMPC is a chemical adsorption and is affected by intra-particle diffusion. The equilibrium adsorption isotherm was well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich equations. The XMPC reached adsorption equilibrium at 303 K after approximately 120 min, and the removal rate of Cd(II) ions was 307 mg/g. The composite material can be reused many times and is easily magnetically separated from the solution. This makes the XMPC a promising candidate for widespread application in sewage treatment systems for the removal of heavy metals.

Abstract
Developing multi-functional media for effectively removing different contaminants coexisted in wastewater system is highly desired. Herein, zein, a natural protein possessing abundant functional groups in molecule, is chosen to be fabricated into micro/nanofibrous membranes as adsorbents and separation media. Zein fibers with novel groove ribbon structures, which possess better structural characteristics, are designed for obtaining good adsorption performance. The adsorption performances of zein fiber membranes are evaluated. The results show that zein fiber membranes have the adsorption capacities up to 94 g/g for motor oil, 168 mg/g for Congo red, and 189 mg/g for Pb2+ ion for 1000 mg/L initial solution concentration, showing considerable competitiveness as compared with the reported adsorbents. The zein membrane with groove ribbon fiber morphology exhibits optimal adsorption capability and can be attractive multi-functional separation media.
