Advances in the application of chitosan-based metal organic frameworks as adsorbents for environmental remediation

Recyclable chitosan adsorbent: Facile functionalization strategy, excellent removal capacity of dyes and adsorption mechanism

The development of chitosan-based adsorbents with facile preparation, high adsorption performance and reusability for the removal of contaminant dyes remains a persistent challenge. To overcome this challenge, herein, we have developed a novel and extremely facile one-step strategy by which a new high-performance chitosan/polyethyleneimine/polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether adsorbent (named as CC/PEI/PGDE) has been successfully fabricated via direct functionalization of CC by PEI at ambient temperature followed by subsequent freeze-drying. The Box-Behnken Design was employed to optimize the concentrations of adsorbent components. Attractively, this adsorbent exhibit outstanding adsorption performances to congo red (RED), acid blue-25 (BLUE) and amino black-10B (BLACK) with 2901 mg g-1 (90.9 %), 3434 mg g-1 (90.9 %), and 1438 mg g-1 (90.1 %) of adsorption capacities (removal efficiencies), respectively, and maintains nearly the same adsorption behaviors to original adsorbent even after 6 cycles of adsorption-desorption processes. Meanwhile, three kinetic models, three isothermal models, and the Vant Hoff model are employed to further investigate the adsorption behaviors of RED, BLUE, and BLACK dyes by CC/PEI/PGDE. The results from SEM, EDS, BET, FT-IR, pHZPC and XPS confirm that hydrogen bond interactions and electrostatic attractions play crucial roles in facilitating dyes adsorption by CC/PEI/PGDE. It is expected that this work can bring forward a new perspective for the facile design of high-performance adsorbent for removing anionic dyes from wastewater.

Determination of Azole Fungicide Residues in Fresh Juice by Magnetic Solid Phase Extraction Based on Fe3O4@ZnAl-LDH@MIL-53(Al) Sorbent in Combination with High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph

In this work, a magnetic adsorption material based on metal-organic framework (Fe3O4@ZnAl-LDH@MIL-53(Al)) was synthesized and used as an adsorbent in the process of magnetic solid phase extraction. Then, a high-performance liquid chromatograph was used to quantitatively detect triazole fungicides in samples. In order to verify the successful preparation of the material, a series of characterization analyses were carried out. Besides, the key parameters that may affect the extraction efficiency have been optimized, and under optimal conditions the three triazole fungicides showed good linearity in the range of 10-1000 μg/L (R2 ≥ 0.9796); Limit of detections were ranged from 0.013 to 0.030 μg/mL. Finally, the established method was applied to the detection of triazole fungicides in four fresh juice samples. The results showed that the target analyte was not detected in all the test samples. By detecting the recoveries (73.3-104.3%) and coefficient variation (RSD ≤ 6.8%) of triazole fungicides in fortified samples, it proved that this established method meets the requirements of pesticide residue analysis and showed excellent application potential.

Preparation of a novel CSM@ZIF-67 composite microsphere to facilitate Congo red adsorption from dyeing wastewater

ABSTRACTChitosan (CS) is commonly used as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment because of its low cost, strong adsorption properties, and high availability of raw materials required for its production. However, CS exhibits limited adaptability to pH, poor mechanical properties, and high swelling in aqueous media; these limitations restrict its widespread use. To address these issues, herein, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) is loaded onto crosslinked CS microspheres (CSM) to prepare CSM@ZIF-67, a composite adsorbent. Next, the CSM@ZIF-67 is applied to the treatment of Congo red (CR) dye, which is typically present in printing and dyeing wastewater. The results demonstrate that the in situ synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on CSM improve the dispersion of MOFs and preserve the morphology of the MOFs. The adsorption equilibrium of CSM@ZIF-67 is reached within 150 min, and its adsorption capacity is as high as 538.4 mg/g at a pH of 9 and temperature of 25 °C. The CR adsorption process is consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, thus revealing that chemisorption is the primary rate-limiting step, and the pollutants are adsorbed on the adsorbent surface in a monolayer. Experiments on material cycling and regeneration performance reveal that the removal efficiency of CSM@ZIF-67 remains above 90%, even after five rounds of adsorption. CSM@ZIF-67 has abundant functional groups and adsorption sites and can efficiently remove CR through mutual interactions between the metal coordination effect, π-π conjugation, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions.

One-Step Prepared Multifunctional Polyacrylonitrile/MIL-100(Fe) Membrane with High-Density Porous Fibers for Efficient Dye/Oil Wastewater Remediation

With environmental pollution becoming more serious, developing efficient treatment technologies for all kinds of organic wastewater has become the focus of current research. In this work, the coaxial electrospinning technology was used to one-step fabricate a porous and underwater superoleophobic polyacrylonitrile nanofibrous membrane with an Fe-based metal-organic framework (MIL-100(Fe)). Benefiting from the synergistic effect of two jets, the nanofibers are smaller and denser, which prompt the exposure of more nanomaterial additives (MIL-100(Fe)). The BET surface area increased to 202.888 m2/g, and the membranes demonstrated outstanding underwater superoleophobicity. Moreover, compared with traditional blended matrix membranes by the single-axis method, separation of the modifier and membrane matrix material by coaxial methods also maintained excellent mechanical properties, which enhanced Young's modulus 3.4 times (∼1.34 MPa). As a result, facing soluble dyes, the porous C-PAN/MIL-100(Fe) membrane can demonstrate outstanding and fast adsorptive property (the Qm of MB and CR reached 44.71 and 88.74 mg g-1, respectively). For oily emulsion, the hydrophilic and oleophobic nanofibrous reticular surface provided excellent separation performance (flux: 1124.0-1549.3 L m-2 h-1, R > 98%). Moreover, the porous and underwater superoleophobic C-PAN/MIL-100(Fe)-0.5 membrane can synchronously purify the dye/oil mixture emulsions by one-step filtration. Based on the above performance, we believe that the modified nanofibrous membrane prepared by one-step coaxial electrospinning technology can promote more studies of the development of membrane preparation technology in the field of oily wastewater treatment.

The effect of synthesis conditions on the in situ grown MIL-100(Fe)-chitosan beads: Interplay between structural properties and arsenic adsorption

Efficient sequestration of arsenic from drinking water is a global need. Herein we report eco-friendly porous hybrid adsorbent beads for removal of arsenic, through in situ synthesis of MIL-100(Fe) in the chitosan solvogel. To understand the structural vs. performance correlation, series of hybrid adsorbents were synthesized by modulating synthesis conditions like temperature, crystallization time, and concentration. Adsorbents were investigated using PXRD, FT-IR, SEM, and ICP-OES. Intriguing correlation between crystallinity and adsorption performance was observed as low and high crystalline MIL-100(Fe)-chitosan (ChitFe5 and ChitFe7, respectively) exhibited exceptional adsorption towards As5+ by removing it from water with 99% efficiency, whereas for As3+ species removal of about 85% was afforded. Adsorption isotherms indicated that increase in crystallinity (ChitFe5 -> ChitFe7), adsorption capacities of As5+ and As3+ increased from 23.2 to 64.5, and from 28.1 to 35.3 mg/g, respectively. Selectivity tests of the adsorbents towards As5+ and As3+ over competitive anions in the equimolar competitive systems having nitrates, sulfates, and carbonates demonstrated that the performance of the absorbents was fully maintained, relative to the control system. Through this study a highly selective and efficient adsorbent for arsenic species is designed and a clear insight into the structural tuning and its effect on adsorption performance is provided.

Lewis Acidic Metal-Organic Framework Assisted Ambient Liquid Extraction Mass Spectrometry Imaging for Enhancing the Coverage of Poorly Ionizable Lipids in Brain Tissue

The spatial distribution of lipidomes in tissues is of great importance in studies of living processes, diseases, and therapies. Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) has become a critical technique for spatial lipidomics. However, MSI of low-abundance or poorly ionizable lipids is still challenging because of the ion suppression from high-abundance lipids. Here, a metal-organic framework (MOF) Zr6O4(OH)4(1,3,5-Tris(4-carboxyphenyl) benzene)2(triflate)6(Zr6OTf-BTB) was prepared and used for selective on-tissue adsorption of phospholipids to reduce ion suppression from them to poorly ionizable lipids. The results show that Zr6OTf-BTB with strong Lewis acidic sites and a large specific surface area (647.9 m2·g-1) could selectively adsorb phospholipids under 1% FA-MeOH. Adsorption efficiencies of phospholipids are 88.4-144.9 times higher than those of other neutral lipids. Moreover, the adsorption capacity and the adsorption kinetic rate constant of the new material to phospholipids are higher than those of Zr6-BTB (242.72 vs 73.96 mg·g-1, 0.0442 vs 0.0220 g·mg-1·min-1). A Zr6OTf-BTB sheet was prepared by a lamination technique for on-tissue phospholipid adsorption from brain tissue. Then, the tissue section on the Zr6OTf-BTB sheet was directly imaged via ambient liquid extraction-MSI with 1% FA-MeOH as the sampling solvent. The results showed that phospholipids could be 100% removed directly on tissue, and the detection coverage of the Zr6OTf-BTB-enhanced MSI method to ceramides (Cers) and hexosylceramides (HexCers) was increased by 5-26 times compared with direct tissue MSI (26 vs 1 and 17 vs 3). The new method provides an efficient and convenient way to eliminate the ion suppression from phospholipids in MSI, largely improving the detection coverage of low-abundance and poorly ionizable lipids.

Thermally-activated gelatin-chitosan-MOF hybrid aerogels for efficient removal of ibuprofen and naproxen

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most frequently used drugs and have been frequently detected in aquatic environments. This paper demonstrates a thermally-activated gelatin-chitosan and amine-functionalized metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH2) aerogel (CGC-MOF), which was successfully synthesized for the efficient removal of ibuprofen (IBP) and naproxen (NPX). Various characterization tools were used to systematically analyze the microstructure and physicochemical properties of the synthesized aerogel. In addition, the effect of key reaction parameters as well as batch and continuous-flow fixed-bed column experiments were carried out to elucidate the adsorption process. Several functional groups in the biopolymer network, combined with excellent MOF properties, synergistically couple to form an adsorbent with great performance. The mesoporous aerogel activated at 200 °C (CGC-MOF200) exhibited a high specific surface area (819.6 m2/g) that is valuable in providing abundant adsorption active sites that facilitate the efficient adsorption of IBP and NPX. CGC-MOF200 exhibited an excellent removal of IBP and NPX, accounting to 99.28 % and 96.39 %, respectively. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm models, suggesting heterogeneous and chemisorption adsorption processes. Overall, this work provides new and valuable insights into the development of a promising biopolymer-MOF composite aerogel for environmental remediation.

Bisphenol-A-diglycidyl ether modified chitosan/nano-SiO2 via hydrothermal process: A statistical modeling and adsorption mechanism for reactive orange 16 dye removal

In this study, chitosan/nano SiO2 (CTS/NS) was chemically modified with bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) cross-linker-assisted hydrothermal process to create an effective adsorbent, CTS-BADGE/NS, for the removal of reactive orange 16 (RO16) dye from aquatic systems. Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to optimize the adsorption process by varying the adsorbent dose (0.02-0.1 g/100 mL), pH (4-10), and time (20-360 min). The adsorption isotherm results indicated that the Langmuir model fits the experimental data well, suggesting that the adsorption process involves a monolayer formation of RO16 on the surface of CTS-BADGE/NS. The kinetic modeling of RO16 adsorption by CTS-BADGE/NS demonstrated that the pseudo-first-order model fits the adsorption data. CTS-BADGE/NS achieved an adsorption capacity of 97.8 mg/g for RO16 dye at optimum desirability functions of dosage 0.099 g/100 mL, solution pH of 4.44, and temperature of 25 °C. Overall, the π-π electron donor-acceptor system significantly improved the adsorption performance of the CTS-BADGE/NS. The results of the regeneration investigation demonstrate that the CTS-BADGE/NS exhibits effective adsorption of RO16, even after undergoing five consecutive cycles. The results of this study suggest that the developed CTS-BADGE/NS composite can be a promising adsorbent for water purification applications.

Biopolymer-Based Composite Hydrogels Embedding Small Silver Nanoparticles for Advanced Antimicrobial Applications: Experimental and Theoretical Insights

In this work, we report a two-step methodology for the synthesis of small silver nanoparticles embedded into hydrogels based on chitosan (CS) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) biopolymers. This method uses d-glucose as an external green reducing agent and purified water as a solvent, leading to an eco-friendly, cost-effective, and biocompatible process for the synthesis of silver nanocomposite hydrogels. Their characterization comprises ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectra, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy assays. Moreover, the structural stability of the hydrogels was investigated through sequential swelling-deswelling cycles. The nanomaterials showed good mechanical properties in terms of their structural stability and revealed prominent antibacterial properties due to the reduced-size particles that promote their use as new advanced antimicrobial agents, an advantage compared to conventional particles in aqueous suspension that lose stability and effectiveness. Finally, theoretical analyses provided insights into the possible interactions, charge transfer, and stabilization process of nanoclusters mediated by the high-electron-density groups belonging to CS and HPMC, revealing their unique structural properties in the preparation of nano-scaled materials.

Comparison of shrimp waste-derived chitosan produced through conventional and microwave-assisted extraction processes: Physicochemical properties and antibacterial activity assessment

Depending on its physicochemical properties and antibacterial activities, chitosan can have a wide range of applications in food, pharmaceutical, medicine, cosmetics, agriculture, and aquaculture. In this experimental study, chitosan was extracted from shrimp waste through conventional extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, and conventional extraction under microwave process conditions. The effects of the heating source on the physicochemical properties and antibacterial activity were investigated. The results showed that the heating process parameters affected the physicochemical properties considerably. The conventional procedure yielded high molecular weight chitosan with a 12.7 % yield, while the microwave extraction procedure yielded a porous medium molecular weight chitosan at 11.8 %. The conventional extraction under microwave process conditions led to medium molecular weight chitosan with the lowest yield (10.8 %) and crystallinity index (79 %). Antibacterial assessment findings revealed that the chitosan extracted using the conventional method had the best antibacterial activity in the agar disk diffusion assay against Listeria monocytogenes (9.48 mm), Escherichia coli. (8.79 mm), and Salmonella Typhimurium (8.57 mm). While the chitosan obtained by microwave-assisted extraction possessed the highest activity against E. coli. (8.37 mm), and Staphylococcus aureus (8.05 mm), with comparable antibacterial activity against S. typhimurium (7.34 mm) and L. monocytogenes (6.52 mm). Moreover, the minimal inhibitory concentration and minimal bactericidal concentration assays demonstrated that among the chitosan samples investigated, the conventionally-extracted chitosan, followed by the chitosan extracted by microwave, had the best antibacterial activity against the target bacteria.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles functionalized chitosan toward bio-based antibacterial adsorbent for enhanced phosphate capture

Developing an eco-friendly, sustainable and antibacterial adsorbent is significant for actual water treatment. Herein, a new bio-based antibacterial adsorbent based on titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles functionalized chitosan (CS) was prepared through an in-situ hydrolysis strategy using titanium oxysulfate as the source of TiO₂. The as-obtained CS/TiO₂ nanocomposite was characterized by a variety of analytical techniques. According to the Langmuir mode, the adsorption capacity of CS/TiO₂ reached 23.64 mg P g^-1, almost 8 times higher than that of CS. In addition, the normalized adsorption capacity (adsorption value per Ti) of CS/TiO₂ was calculated to be 102.68 mg P g^-1 Ti^-1, much higher than pure TiO₂ (60.11 mg P g^-1 Ti^-1). Moreover, CS/TiO₂ exhibited a highly selective capacity for phosphate removal in the presence of competing anions, and showed high stability in a wide pH range of 3.0-9.0. When the phosphate concentration was 2.0 mg P L^-1, the removal efficiency of phosphate reached 99.5 % and the residual concentration was only 10 μg P L^-1, which meets the USEPA standards for eutrophication prevention and control. In addition, after treatment by CS/TiO₂, the phosphate concentration of two sewage water samples decreased from 1.50 and 1.0 mg P L^-1 to <0.010 mg P L^-1, meeting the standard of level II water based on the Environmental Quality Standard of China (GB3838-2002). Ligand exchange and electrostatic interactions are mainly responsible for phosphate adsorption by CS/TiO₂. Furthermore, the CS/TiO₂ nanocomposites exhibited excellent antibacterial activity, which could avoid biofouling contamination caused by microorganisms. Benefiting from the above advantages, the as-designed CS/TiO₂ nanocomposite has great potential as a bio-based antibacterial adsorbent for phosphate removal or capture from wastewater.

Preparation of metal organic frameworks modified chitosan composite with high capacity for Hg(II) adsorption

In this study, a novel modified chitosan composite adsorbent (UNCS) was prepared by crosslinking between chitosan and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) material UiO-66-NH₂ using epichlorohydrin as crosslinker. The influence of the prepared conditions was investigated. The structure and morphology of the composite were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TGA, BET and zeta potential analysis. Effects of different variables for adsorption of Hg(II) on this adsorbent were explored. The kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 2 h. The adsorption was mainly controlled by chemical process. Adsorption isothermal studies illustrated that the adsorption fitted Langmuir isotherm model, implying the homogeneous adsorption on the surface of the adsorbent. The adsorbent exhibited high uptake and the maximum capacity from Langmuir model could reach 896.8 mg g^-1 at pH 6. Thermodynamic studies showed the spontaneous nature and exothermic nature of the adsorption process. Additionally, the removal of Hg(II) on UNCS could achieve over 90 %. The adsorption-desorption cycled experiments indicated the appropriate reusability of the adsorbent. Hence, this adsorbent would be promising for the removal of Hg(II) from wastewater.

Feather-weight cryostructured thiourea-chitosan aerogels for highly efficient removal of heavy metal ions and bacterial pathogens

Designing of economically feasible and recyclable polysaccharide-based materials with thiourea functional groups for removal of specific metal ions such as Ag(I), Au(I), Pb(II) or Hg(II) remains a major challenge for environmental applications. Here, we introduce ultra-lightweight thiourea-chitosan (CSTU) aerogels engineered by combining successive freeze-thawing cycles with covalent formaldehyde-mediated cross-linking and lyophilization. All aerogels exhibited outstanding low densities (0.0021-0.0103 g/cm³) and remarkable high specific surface areas (416.64-447.26 m²/g), outperforming the common polysaccharide-based aerogels. Benefitting from their superior structural features (honeycomb interconnected pores and high porosity), CSTU aerogels demonstrate fast sorption rates and excellent performance in sorption of heavy metal ions from highly-concentrated single or binary-component mixtures (1.11 mmol Ag (I)/g and 0.48 mmol Pb(II)/g). A remarkable recycling stability was observed after five sorption-desorption-regeneration cycles when the removal efficiency was up to 80 %. These results support the high potential of CSTU aerogels in the treatment of metal-containing wastewater. Moreover, the Ag(I)-loaded CSTU aerogels exhibited excellent antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strains, the killing rate being around 100 %. This data points towards the potential application of developed aerogels in circular economy, by employing the spent Ag(I)-loaded aerogels in the biological decontamination of waters.

Recent Advancements in MOF/Biomass and Bio-MOF Multifunctional Materials: A Review

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives have delivered perfect answers in detection, separation, solving water and electromagnetic pollution and improving catalysis and energy storage efficiency due to their advantages including their highly tunable porosity, structure and versatility. Recently, MOF/biomass, bio-MOFs and their derivatives have gradually become a shining star in the MOF family due to the improvement in the application performance of MOFs using biomass and biomolecules. However, current studies lack a systematic summary of the synthesis and advancements of MOF/biomass, bio-MOFs and their derivatives. In this review, we describe their research progress in detail from the following two aspects: (1) synthesis of MOF/biomass using biomass as a template to achieve good dispersion and connectivity at the same time; (2) preparing bio-MOFs by replacing traditional organic linkers with biomolecules to enhance the connection stability between metal ions/clusters and ligands and avoid the formation of toxic by-products. This enables MOFs to possess additional unique advantages, such as improved biocompatibility and mechanical strength, ideal reusability and stability and lower production costs. Most importantly, this is a further step towards green and sustainable development. Additionally, we showcase some typical application examples to show their great potential, including in the fields of environmental remediation, energy storage and electromagnetic wave absorption.

Study on the Performance of Composite Adsorption of Cu2+ by Chitosan/β-Cyclodextrin Cross-Linked Zeolite

In order to remove Cu2+ from wastewater, a kind of microsphere adsorbent (SCDO) with high efficiency for Cu2+ adsorption was prepared by the microdrop condensation method, where chitosan (CTS) and sodium alginate (SA) were used as the matrix to crosslink β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and zeolite (Zeo). The structure and properties of SCDO were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Upon that, the adsorption performance of SCDO for Cu2+ was studied, in which the effects of pH, initial concentration, dosage, adsorption time and temperature were investigated. The results showed that the removal rate of Cu2+ reached 97.08%, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 24.32 mg/g with the temperature at 30 °C, the dosage of SCDO at 12 g/L, the initial concentration of Cu2+ at 100 mg/L, the pH of the solution at 6.0 and the adsorption time at 120 min, respectively. The adsorption process of Cu2+ by SCDO occurred in accordance with quasi-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. After four repeats of continuous adsorption and desorption, the regenerative removal rate of Cu2+ could still reach 84.28%, which indicated that SCDO had outstanding reusability.
