Abstract
Researchers are addressing environmental concerns related to petroleum-based plastic packaging by exploring biopolymers from natural sources, chemical synthesis, and microbial fermentation. Despite the potential of individual biopolymers, they often exhibit limitations like low water resistance and poor mechanical properties. Blending polymers emerges as a promising strategy to overcome these challenges, creating films with enhanced performance. This review focuses on recent advancements in chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend food packaging films. It covers molecular structure, properties, strategies for performance improvement, and applications in food preservation. The blend's excellent compatibility and intermolecular interactions make it a promising candidate for biodegradable films. Future research should explore large-scale thermoplastic technologies and investigate the incorporation of additives like natural extracts and nanoparticles to enhance film properties. Chitosan/PVA blend films offer a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastic packaging, with potential applications in practical food preservation.

Abstract
Although the active and intelligent properties of rich in anthocyanin extracts added to films have been extensively studied, there remains a sparsity of research pertaining to the miscibility of blended films. This work focused on the miscibility of the chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (CP) film caused by the addition of Aronia melanocarpa extracts (AME), which are rich anthocyanins and phenolic acids, and its effect on physicochemical and functional properties. AME facilitated the amidation reaction and ionic interaction of chitosan in CP films, leading to loss of the crystallinity degree of chitosan. Furthermore, the crystal disruption promoted the formation of hydrogen bonds with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with the promoted miscibility. CP film incorporated with 8 % AME possessed the highest tensile strength (26.79 MPa), and elongation at break (66.38 %) as well as excellent ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) light barrier property, water vapor barrier properties, due to its high miscibility degree. Moreover, this film also showed excellent antioxidant, antibacterial activity, and pH response function, which could be used to monitor the storage of highly perishable shrimp. Hence, the AME provided extra functionality and improved miscibility between chitosan and PVA, which showed great potential for the preparation of high-performance bioactive-fortified and intelligent food packaging films.

Abstract
The use of plant gum-based biodegradable bioplastic films as a packaging material is limited due to their poor physicochemical properties. However, combining plant gum with synthetic degradable polymer and some additives can improve these properties. Keeping in view, the present study aimed to synthesize a series of bioplastic films using Moringa oleifera gum, polyvinyl alcohol, glycerol, and citric acid via thermal treatment followed by a solution casting method. The films were characterized using analytical techniques such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, AFM, TGA, and DSC. The study examined properties such as water sensitivity, gas barrier attributes, tensile strength, the shelf life of food, and biodegradability. The films containing higher citric acid amounts showed appreciable %elongation without compromising tensile strength, good oxygen barrier properties, and biodegradation rates (>95%). Varying the amounts of glycerol and citric acid in the films broadened their physicochemical properties ranging from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity and rigidity to flexibility. As all the films were synthesized using economical and environmentally safe materials, and showed better physicochemical and barrier properties, this study suggests that these bioplastic films can prove to be a potential alternative for various packaging applications.

Abstract
Active compounds are integrated into food packaging films to enhance their food protection capabilities. Understanding the release of these components in films, particularly in crosslinking scenarios, is crucial. This study aimed to mathematically model the release of phenolic compounds from chitosan/teff flour films to understand how active compounds gradually release. Moreover, it was aimed to study the effects of incorporation of beetroot leaf extract and citric acid crosslinking. The collective observations, encompassing increased density and thermal stability, alongside concurrent reductions in moisture content, water solubility, water vapor permeability and swelling index following citric acid addition, strongly suggested the presence of crosslinking. Applying Fick's law and the finite element method revealed a substantial influence of the crosslinking agent on diffusion coefficients. The model exhibited strong agreement with experimental data, as reflected in low root mean square error values ranging from 3.02 to 8.50 mmol/m3 for films. Furthermore, the influence of citric acid crosslinking on the release of TPC was evident, as indicated by a decrease in average diffusion coefficient values from 3.499 × 10-13 m2 s-1 to 1.770 × 10-13 m2 s-1 with the formula with 1.5 % citric acid and 0.5 % beetroot leaf extract. This showcases the impact of various parameters on controlled release in food packaging.

Abstract
Chitosan is a product of deacetylated chitin and a natural polymer that is attractive as a functional and biocompatible material in the pursuit of alternative materials to synthetic plastics for a sustainable society. Although hierarchical architectures, from precise molecular structures to nanofibers and twisted structures, have been clarified, the expansion of the anisotropic microstructures of chitosan into millimeter-scale materials is in the process of development. In this study, a chitosan network was reconstructed from an aqueous solution by using the meniscus splitting method to form a three-dimensionally ordered microstructure. A chitosan membrane deposited on the millimeter scale formed a useful anisotropically pH-responsive hydrogel. During the evaporation of the aqueous solution from a finite space, chitosan underwent ordered deposition by capillary force to form a membrane with oriented microstructures and microlayers. Unlike the cast films formed between solid-liquid and air-liquid interfaces, this membrane formed between two air-liquid interfaces. As a result, the membranes with ordered microstructures were capable of signifying directional swelling in aqueous environments and reversible/irreversible swelling-deswelling changes by controlling the pH range. We envision that the anisotropic pH response of the chitosan network can be utilized under physiological conditions as a next-generation material.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) were derived using eggplant peel by a hydrothermal approach and incorporated into the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and gelatin (Gel) blend to develop sustainable and functional packaging films for fruit preservation. The CD was uniformly dispersed within the CMC/Gel blend to form a dense and continuous film and fashioned a strong interaction with the polymer chain, increasing the tensile strength of the film by 5.0-16.0 %. Also, with the impregnation of CDs, the UV-blocking potential of the CMC/Gel film was greatly improved to the extent of blocking 94.3 % of UV-B and 72.5 % of UV-A, while the water vapor permeability slightly decreased (by 2.7-5.4 %), and the water contact angle of the film marginally expand (by 6.2-19.1 %). The CMC/Gel film with 3 wt% of CD added depicted strong antioxidant efficacy of 100 % against ABTS and 59.1 % against DPPH and displayed strong antibacterial action that inhibited the progress of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli by 99.8 %. In addition, when table grapes were packaged using a CMC/Gel composite film containing CD and stored at 4 °C for 24 days, the fruits packed with the composite film maintained excellent external quality and extended the shelf life.

Abstract
The development of bio-based hemodialysis membranes continues to be a challenge. Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) membranes show potential in hemodialysis but can hardly retain beneficial proteins. Here, chitosan particles/bacterial nanocellulose (CSP/BNC) membranes were designed to efficiently remove uremic toxins and retain beneficial proteins. First, CSPs were synthesized in situ within a BNC membrane by ionic gelation following negative pressure impregnation. Subsequently, these membranes were thoroughly characterized. Compared with the BNC membrane, the pore volume and pore size of the 3 % CSP/BNC membrane decreased by 42.2 % and 32.1 %, respectively. The increased 22.2 times of Young's modulus and 88.9 % of tensile strength in the 3 % CSP/BNC membrane confirmed enhanced mechanical property. The sieving coefficient of bovine serum albumin decreased to 0.05 ± 0.03 in the 3 % CSP/BNC membrane. Moreover, the CSP/BNC membrane exhibited good hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. The simulated dialysis results showed that the 3 % CSP/BNC membrane exhibited high clearance of urea (16.37 %/cm2) and lysozyme (3.54 %/cm2), while efficiently retaining bovine serum albumin (98.04 %/cm2). This is the first demonstration of the construction of a BNC-based hemodialysis membrane with in situ CSP formation to effectively regulate the pore properties of the membrane, making the CSP/BNC membrane a promising candidate for hemodialysis applications.

Abstract
While oral administration offers safety benefits, its therapeutic efficacy is hindered by various physiological factors within the body. In this study, a novel approach was explored using a matrix consisting of 2 % chitosan and 2 % gelatin, with citric acid (CA) serving as a green cross-linking agent (ranging from 0.4 % to 1.0 %), and curcumin (Cur) as the model drug to formulate hydrogel carriers. The results showed that a 0.4 % CA concentration, the hydrogel (CGA0.4) reached swelling equilibrium in deionized water within 40 min, exhibiting a maximum swelling index was 539 g/g. The addition of Cur to the CGA hydrogel (CGACur) notably enhanced release efficiency, particularly in simulated intestinal fluid, where Cur release rates exceeded 40 % within 100 min compared to below 8 % in other solutions. Among these hydrogels, CGA0.4Cur exhibited the fastest degradation rate in the combined solution, reaching >90 % degradation after 7 days. Additionally, Cur and CA demonstrated positive effects on the tensile strength, antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity of hydrogels. Compare to the bioaccessibility of CGC (27 %), those of CGACur had increased to over 34 %. These findings offer provide theoretical support for CA-crosslinked chitosan/gelatin gels in delivering hydrophobic bioactive molecules and their application in intestinal drug delivery system.

Abstract
Chitosan exhibits a wide source, non-toxic and biodegradable, and is the optimal functional raw material for preparing food packaging materials. However, the pure chitosan film has some disadvantages such as limited antibacterial activity and weak mechanical properties. In this study, sulfobetaines modified chitosan (CS-SBMA) was synthesized by grafting copolymerized betaine methacrylate sulfonate onto the chain of chitosan to improve the anti-bacterial adhesion and antibacterial properties of chitosan, aiming to develop antibacterial and anti-bacterial adhesion films based on CS-SBMA and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by the casting method. The structure of CS-SBMA was characterized by 1H NMR and FTIR. The appropriate proportion of CS-SBMA/PVA was determined to be 1/1 and 1/2, by characterizing the composite films with FTIR, XRD, SEM, mechanical, optical, and water resistance behaviors. In addition, CS-SBMA/PVA films showed excellent antibacterial, anti-bacterial adhesion and biofilm control function. The colonies number of E. coli and S. aureus on the surface of CS-SBMA/PVA 1/1 film decreased 94.15 % and 94.27 %, respectively, and 92.93 % of S. aureus and 94.87 % of E. coli colonies were inactivated within 60 min contact. These results indicate that CS-SBMA/PVA film exhibits potential antibacterial and anti-bacterial adhesion properties, which is suitable for food packaging materials.

Abstract
Till now, a wide range of chitosan (CHS)-based food packaging films have been developed. Yet, the role of molecular weight (MW), which is an important physical property of CHS, in determining the physicochemical and biochemical properties of vanillic acid (VA)-grafted CHS hydrogel films synthesized using CHS with different MWs has not been investigated until now. Three kinds of CHS including low, medium, and high MWs were grafted separately with VA through a carbodiimide mediated coupling reaction. No significant difference in water resistance properties was observed with increasing MW of CHS, in contrast to obvious decrease in light transmittance and opacity. The VA-g-CHS hydrogel films exhibited significantly improved light blocking capacity. A significant improvement in antioxidant (~6-fold) and antimicrobial (~1.2-fold) activity was observed after grafting with VA. In contrast, the free radical scavenging and antimicrobial activity decreased with increasing MW of CHS. Most importantly, VA-g-CHS hydrogel films could maintain the freshness of cherry tomatoes for up to 10 days at ~25 °C. However, no significant difference was observed depending on the MW value of CHS. This pioneering work is of great importance in guiding the selection of MW of CHS biomacromolecule to design hydrogel films with desired physicochemical and biochemical properties.

Abstract
In this work, the PVA-chitosan composite packaging films doped with biomass-fabricated zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and dragon fruit waste extract (DFE) were developed for potential use in food packaging applications. ZnO NPs were synthesized using a sustainable method employing C. sinensis waste extract as a reducing agent. Chitosan and PVA were blended in a specific ratio (1: 1 w/w) to obtain a film-forming solution, into which the ZnO NPs and dragon fruit waste extract were incorporated. The resulting solution was cast into films, which were characterized using various analytical techniques. Mechanical properties, water solubility, and thermal stability of the films were also evaluated. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of green ZnO NPs and dragon fruit waste extract enhanced the mechanical strength and thermal stability of the films while reducing water vapor permeability. Moreover, the films exhibited biocidal and excellent 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging properties, indicating their use in the food packaging sector. The production of these films offers a practical approach to produce bioactive food packaging materials. The use of plant extract and waste material as reducing agents can reduce the overall cost of production while providing added benefits, such as antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

Abstract
The evolution of respiratory diseases represents a considerable public health challenge, as they are among the leading causes of death worldwide. In this sense, in addition to the high prevalence of diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, and lung cancer, emerging respiratory diseases, particularly those caused by members of the coronavirus family, have contributed to a significant number of deaths on a global scale over the last two decades. Therefore, several studies have been conducted to optimize the efficacy of treatments against these diseases, focusing on pulmonary drug delivery using nanomedicine. Thus, the development of nanocarriers has emerged as a promising alternative to overcome the limitations of conventional therapy, by increasing drug bioavailability at the target site and reducing unwanted side effects. In this context, nanoparticles composed of chitosan (CS) show advantages over other nanocarriers because chitosan possesses intrinsic biological properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and mucoadhesive capacity. Moreover, CS nanoparticles have the potential to enhance drug stability, prolong the duration of action, improve drug targeting, control drug release, optimize dissolution of poorly soluble drugs, and increase cell membrane permeability of hydrophobic drugs. These properties could optimize the performance of the drug after its pulmonary administration. Therefore, this review aims to discuss the potential of chitosan nanoparticles for pulmonary drug delivery, highlighting how their biological properties can improve the treatment of pulmonary diseases, including their synergistic action with the encapsulated drug.

Abstract
Chitosan is a natural and biodegradable polymer with promising potential for biomedical applications. This study concerns the production of chitosan-based materials for future use in the medical industry. Bioactive substances-caffeine and ethanolic propolis extract (EEP)-were incorporated into a chitosan matrix to increase the bioactivity of the obtained films and improve their mechanical properties. Acetic and citric acids were used as solvents in the production of the chitosan-based films. The obtained materials were characterized in terms of their antibacterial and antifungal activities, as well as their mechanical properties, including tensile strength and elongation at break. Moreover, the chemical structures and surface morphologies of the films were assessed. The results showed that the solution consisting of chitosan, citric acid, caffeine, and EEP exhibited an excellent antiradical effect. The activity of this solution (99.13%) was comparable to that of the standard antioxidant Trolox (92.82%). In addition, the film obtained from this solution showed good antibacterial activity, mainly against Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis. The results also revealed that the films produced with citric acid exhibited higher activity levels against pathogenic bacteria than the films obtained with acetic acid. The antimicrobial effect of the chitosan-based films could be further enhanced by adding bioactive additives such as caffeine and propolis extract. The mechanical tests showed that the solvents and additives used affected the mechanical properties of the films obtained. The film produced from chitosan and acetic acid was characterized by the highest tensile strength value (46.95 MPa) while the chitosan-based film with citric acid showed the lowest value (2.28 MPa). The addition of caffeine and propolis to the film based on chitosan with acetic acid decreased its tensile strength while in the case of the chitosan-based film with citric acid, an increase in strength was observed. The obtained results suggested that chitosan films with natural bioactive substances can be a promising alternative to the traditional materials used in the medical industry, for example, as including biodegradable wound dressings or probiotic encapsulation materials.
