Multi-responsive supramolecular organogel with a crystalline-like structure

Thermal Chiroptical Switch Based on an Ultrahigh Temperature-Initiated Macrocycle Gel Platform

Responsive chiral optical materials have gained considerable interests from the fields of sensing, display, and optical devices. Materials that are capable of changing chiral optics under harsh conditions such as strong basic/acidic or ultrahigh temperature provides thoughts for the design of materials working at special environments, which however, are still underdeveloped. Here, a proof-of-concept design of organogel is reported that acts as matrices for thermal chiroptical switch with critical working temperature above 100 °C. The reversible solution-to-gel transition of the specific β-cyclodextrin/dimethyl formide/LiCl system is initialized at about 130 °C, when the luminophores with aggregation-induced-emission property shall be lighted up with transferred chirality from inherent chiral β-cyclodextrin. It allows for the controlled emergence of circularly polarized luminescence. This delicate design enables successful fabrication of ultrahigh temperature thermal chiroptical switch.

Supramolecular self-assembly of the γ-cyclodextrin and perfluorononanoic acid system in aqueous solution

Recently, inclusion complexes formed from cyclodextrins (CDs) and surfactants have been found to play complex and important roles in supramolecular self-assembly. In this work, the self-assembly of perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA)/γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) in aqueous solution was investigated. The sole PFNA solution assembled into spherical uni-lamellar vesicles under certain concentrations as revealed by freeze-fracture transmission electron microscopy (FF-TEM) images. Interestingly, when γ-CD was added into the PFNA solution, one novel kind of cyclodextrin-based hydrogel with a crystal-like structure was obtained. The morphology of the hydrogels was inerratic parallel hexahedron or regular hexahedron as revealed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. Furthermore, the hydrogels were transformed into crystalline precipitates, which were composed of highly uniform tetragonal sheets with excellent crystallinity and homogeneous size distribution just by changing the γ-CD concentration. More amazingly, the crystal-like hydrogels were sensitive to shear and switched to solutions in their morphology with bar-like and rod-like aggregates and smaller square sheets under different shear rates, and the hydrogel-solution transition behavior was a reversable process. 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD) measurements were performed to lead us to propose the formation mechanism of the above aggregates. Hopefully, our studies will cast new light on the fundamental investigations into the self-assembly of supramolecular systems of fluorinated surfactants and CD molecules and provide a new idea for smart material design.

pH-Responsive Dipeptide-Based Dynamic Covalent Chemistry Systems Whose Products and Self-Assemblies Depend on the Structure of Isomeric Aromatic Dialdehydes

Facile control over preparation of organic building blocks and self-assembled aggregations to construct the desired materials remains challenges. This article reports selective dynamic covalent bonds formation and the corresponding self-assembly behaviors by using a dipeptide, glycylglycine (GlyGly), reacting with isomeric aromatic dialdehydes o-phthalaldehyde (OPA), p-phthalaldehyde (PPA), and m-phthalaldehyde (MPA) to demonstrate diversified aggregation forms caused by structure topology variations. Under alkaline condition, the aldehyde groups of phthalaldehydes can be connected with the amino groups of GlyGly by imine bonds as the dynamic chemical bonds. Owing to the fact that formation and dissociation of the imine bonds were reversibly pH-responsive, the reactions and aggregates assembled by their products were also reversibly controlled by changing pH. Three products, including two-armed product (OPGG, in which two GlyGly molecules were connected with one OPA molecule), single-armed product (PPG, in which only one GlyGly molecule was connected with a PPA molecule), and a mixture product (MPGG and MPG), as well as their different self-assembly behaviors, were obtained from OPA/GlyGly, PPA/GlyGly, and MPA/GlyGly systems, respectively, at the same condition of pH 8.6 in 90% methanol aqueous solution. However, for OPA/GlyGly system, another different type of product with benzopyrrole structure (OPG) was obtained by nucleophilic substitution via mixing OPA and GlyGly in water, which generated organic nanoparticles. Based on the results above, we conjectured the differences in dynamic covalent bond formation and supramolecular assembly clearly were influenced by the structure topologies of phthalaldehydes (OPA, PPA, and MPA). The experimental phenomenon verified the hypothesis as well, which may guide us to realize facile construction of selective reaction products and intelligent reversibly responsive materials with diverse morphologies and functions.

Gels with sense: supramolecular materials that respond to heat, light and sound

Advances in the field of supramolecular chemistry have made it possible, in many situations, to reliably engineer soft materials to address a specific technological problem. Particularly exciting are "smart" gels that undergo reversible physical changes on exposure to remote, non-invasive environmental stimuli. This review explores the development of gels which are transformed by heat, light and ultrasound, as well as other mechanical inputs, applied voltages and magnetic fields. Focusing on small-molecule gelators, but with reference to organic polymers and metal-organic systems, we examine how the structures of gelator assemblies influence the physical and chemical mechanisms leading to thermo-, photo- and mechano-switchable behaviour. In addition, we evaluate how the unique and versatile properties of smart materials may be exploited in a wide range of applications, including catalysis, crystal growth, ion sensing, drug delivery, data storage and biomaterial replacement.

Modulation of Cyclodextrin Particle Amphiphilic Properties to Stabilize Pickering Emulsion

Cyclodextrins have been proven to form complexes with linear oil molecules and stabilize emulsions. Amphiphilic properties of cyclodextrin particles were modulated through esterification reaction between β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and octadecenyl succinic anhydride (ODSA) under alkaline conditions. ODS-β-CD particles with degree of substitution (DS) of 0.003, 0.011, and 0.019 were obtained. The introduced hydrophobic long chain that was linked within β-CD cavity led to the change of ODS-β-CD in terms of morphological structure, surface charge density, size, and contact angle, upon which the properties and stability of the emulsions stabilized by ODS-β-CD were highly dependent. The average diameter of ODS-β-CD particles ranged from 449 to 1484 nm. With the DS increased from 0.003 to 0.019, the contact angle and absolute zeta potential value of these ODS-β-CD particles improved from 25.7° to 47.3° and 48.1 to 62.8 mV, respectively. The cage structure of β-CD crystals was transformed to channel structure, then further to amorphous structure after introduction of the octadecenyl succinylation chain. ODS-β-CD particles exhibited higher emulsifying ability compared to β-CD. The resulting Pickering emulsions formed by ODS-β-CD particles were more stable during storage. This study investigates the ability of these ODS-β-CD particles to stabilize oil-in-water emulsions with respect to their amphiphilic character and structural properties.
