The effect of sodium chloride concentration on the mutarotation and structure of d-xylose in water: Experimental and theoretical investigation

Study on the role of alkali halides on the mutarotation and dehydration of d-xylose in aqueous solution

Although the xylose mutarotation and transformation have been investigated largely separately, their relationship has been rarely systematically elaborated. The effect of several factors such as xylose concentration, temperature, and salt concentration, affecting the mutarotation of xylose are discussed. Nine alkali halides (LiCl, NaCl, KCl, LiBr, NaBr, KBr, LiI, NaI, and KI) are used to test salt effects. The relationship between xylose rotation rate constant (kM), specific optical rotation at equilibrium ([α]eqm), α/β ratio, H chemical shift difference (ΔΔδ), Gibbs free energy difference (ΔG), hydrogen ion or hydroxide ion concentration ([H+] or [OH-]), and xylose conversion is discussed. Different salts dissolved in water result in different pH of the solutions, which affect the mutarotation of xylose, with the nature of both cation and anion. Shortly, the smaller the cation radius is and the larger the anion radius is, the greater the mutarotation rate is. In the dehydration of xylose to furfural in salty solutions, xylose conversion is positively correlated to mutarotation rate, H+ or OH- concentration, and the energy difference between α-xylopyranose and β-xylopyranose. Although the [α]eqm of xylose is positively correlated with α/β configuration ratio, there is no obvious correlation with xylose dehydration. The conversion to furfural in chlorides is superior to that in bromines and iodides, which is due to the fact that the pH of chloride salts is smaller than that of the corresponding bromide and iodized salts. Higher H+ concentration prefers to accelerate the formation of furfural. In basic salt solutions, the xylulose selectivity is higher than that of furfural at the initial stage of reaction. The furfural selectivity and carbon balance are better in acidic condition rather than in basic condition. In H2O-MTHF (2-Methyltetrahydrofuran) biphasic system, the optimal furfural selectivity of 81.0 % is achieved at 190 °C in 1 h with the assistance of LiI and a little HCl (0.2 mmol, 8 mmol/L in aqueous phase). A high mutarotation rate represents rapid xylose conversion, but a high furfural selectivity prefers in acidic solutions, which would be perfect if organic solvents were available to form biphasic systems.

Investigation of the structure of gallate xylose polymers and their antioxidant properties for skin care products

Xylose is the second most abundant monosaccharide in nature, and gallic acid (GA) has properties of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. Hence, the gallate xylose (GX) polymers were synthesized from d-xylose and gallic acid for skin care applications in this paper. Then, the structure, generation mechanisms and the antioxidant activity of the generated polymer were studied. It got the results that: The generated GX polymers have strong antioxidant properties, yielded in 80.1% of GA mass. The DPPH scavenging activity was over 80.0% under the polymer's solution over 0.2 mg/mL. Moreover, the reaction mechanisms of DPPH removal were explained in a new theory based on Mass spectral analysis. Therefore, it demonstrates that the GX polymers of is a potential antioxidant material for skin care products, and it does contribution to the theory of DPPH removal for application in the fields of chemistry, biology and medicine researches.

Crystallization Behavior and Crystallographic Properties of dl-Arabinose and dl-Xylose Diastereomer Sugars

Natural sugar molecules such as xylose and arabinose exhibit sweetness profiles similar to sucrose, which makes them a valuable alternative in low-calorie foods as well as excipients or cocrystallization agents in pharmaceutical formulations. Xylose and arabinose are also chiral diastereomers that can exhibit specific crystallization behavior. In this work, the solid-state landscapes of the chiral pairs of both xylose and arabinose have been investigated to determine whether racemic compounds or conglomerates are formed. Furthermore, single crystals of xylose and arabinose have been grown and characterized by X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy to study their crystallographic properties and relate them to the crystallization behavior. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements were used to determine the phase diagrams of the two analyzed chiral systems. The solubilities of the different solid forms of xylose and arabinose were measured in different solvent mixtures by a thermogravimetric method. An analysis was conducted to assess the main thermodynamic parameters and the activity coefficients of the compounds in solution. Finally, slurry experiments in a 50:50 w/w ethanol/water solvent have also been performed to determine the relative stability of each solid form and the kinetics of transformation in this solvent mixture. It was found that dl-arabinose crystallizes as a stable racemic compound, which transforms quickly from its constituent enantiomers when in solution; whereas d- and l-xylose molecules crystallize separately as a conglomerate.
