Experimental and computational study of metal oxide nanoparticles for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants: a review

Photocatalysis is a more proficient technique that involves the breakdown or decomposition of different organic contaminants, various dyes, and harmful viruses and fungi using UV or visible light solar spectrum. Metal oxides are considered promising candidate photocatalysts owing to their low cost, efficiency, simple fabricating method, sufficient availability, and environment-friendliness for photocatalytic applications. Among metal oxides, TiO2 is the most studied photocatalyst and is highly applied in wastewater treatment and hydrogen production. However, TiO2 is relatively active only under ultraviolet light due to its wide bandgap, which limits its applicability because the production of ultraviolet is expensive. At present, the discovery of a photocatalyst of suitable bandgap with visible light or modification of the existing photocatalyst is becoming very attractive for photocatalysis technology. However, the major drawbacks of photocatalysts are the high recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, the ultraviolet light activity limitations, and low surface coverage. In this review, the most commonly used synthesis method for metal oxide nanoparticles, photocatalytic applications of metal oxides, and applications and toxicity of different dyes are comprehensively highlighted. In addition, the challenges in the photocatalytic applications of metal oxides, strategies to suppress these challenges, and metal oxide studied by density functional theory for photocatalytic applications are described in detail.

Carbon Quantum Dots Accelerating Surface Charge Transfer of 3D PbBiO2I Microspheres with Enhanced Broad Spectrum Photocatalytic Activity-Development and Mechanism Insight

The development of a highly efficient, visible-light responsive catalyst for environment purification has been a long-standing exploit, with obstacles to overcome, including inefficient capture of near-infrared photons, undesirable recombination of photo-generated carriers, and insufficient accessible reaction sites. Hence, novel carbon quantum dots (CQDs) modified PbBiO₂I photocatalyst were synthesized for the first time through an in-situ ionic liquid-induced method. The bridging function of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide ([Bmim]I) guarantees the even dispersion of CQDs around PbBiO₂I surface, for synchronically overcoming the above drawbacks and markedly promoting the degradation efficiency of organic contaminants: (i) CQDs decoration harness solar photons in the near-infrared region; (ii) particular delocalized conjugated construction of CQDs strength via the utilization of photo-induced carriers; (iii) π-π interactions increase the contact between catalyst and organic molecules. Benefiting from these distinguished features, the optimized CQDs/PbBiO₂I nanocomposite displays significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance towards the elimination of rhodamine B and ciprofloxacin under visible/near-infrared light irradiation. The spin-trapping ESR analysis demonstrates that CQDs modification can boost the concentration of reactive oxygen species (O₂^•-). Combined with radicals trapping tests, valence-band spectra, and Mott-Schottky results, a possible photocatalytic mechanism is proposed. This work establishes a significant milestone in constructing CQDs-modified, bismuth-based catalysts for solar energy conversion applications.

Novel application of Ag/PbBiO2I nanocomposite in piezocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B via harvesting ultrasonic vibration energy

Ag/PbBiO2I nanocomposite was synthesized and firstly applied in piezocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under ultrasonic vibration. The two-dimensional structure endows PbBiO2I nanosheets piezoelectric property, so that it can drive the piezocatalytic reaction under ultrasonic vibration. The loading of Ag nanoparticles forms Schottky barriers between the Ag-PbBiO2I contact region, which improves the separation of charge carriers and subsequently increases the piezocatalytic efficiency. The RhB degradation rate of the optimal Ag/PbBiO2I sample is 0.0165 min-1, which reaches 6.8 times that of pure PbBiO2I. This work indicates that the PbBiO2I nanosheet shows promising potential in utilizing ultrasonic vibration energy.

Visible-light-driven photocatalysis of carbon dioxide and organic pollutants by MFeO2 (M = Li, Na, or K)

In recent years, lithium-containing ceramic materials have attracted considerable research attention as high-temperature adsorbents of carbon dioxide. The recycling of electrode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries for use as photocatalysts in recovering CO₂ and degrading organic pollutants is worthy of exploration. Solid, magnetic ferrite-containing photocatalysts are easily separated from reaction solutions by using magnetic devices. Solid catalysts (e.g., LiFeO₂, LiFe₅O₈, NaFeO₂, and K₂Fe₂O₄) were prepared through the calcination of Fe₂O₃ and M₂CO₃. CO₂ was photoreduced and crystal violet (CV) and 2-hydroxybenzoic acid (2-HBA) were photodegraded under visible light irradiation. The optimized K₂Fe₂O₄ photocatalyst increased the rate of photocatalytic conversion from CO₂ to methane at 20.9 µmol g^-1 h^-1. The catalytic efficiency indicated that the optimized reaction rate constants of CV with LiFeO₂, NaFeO₂, and K₂Fe₂O₄ were 2.98 × 10^-1, 5.32 × 10^-1, and 4.36 × 10^-1 h^-1, respectively. The quenching effect achieved through the use of various scavengers and the electron paramagnetic resonance in CV degradation revealed the substantial contribution of the reactive superoxide anion radical O₂^- and the minor roles of h⁺ and the OH radical. Its usefulness in the synthesis of solid-base catalyst MFeO₂ is promising for environmental control and relevant applications, particularly in solar energy manufacturing.

CuO/PbO Nanocomposite: Preparation and Catalysis for Ammonium Perchlorate Thermal Decomposition

In this present article, we reported a facile and efficient milling method to prepare a series of CuO/PbO nanocomposite metal oxides (CuO/PbO NMOs), with CuO/PbO molar ratios of 1:2, 1:1, 1:0.5, and 1:0.25 as a potential catalyst to catalyze the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP). The obtained CuO/PbO NMOs were systematically characterized. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses showed that the characteristic peaks of CuO/PbO NMOs were almost the superposition of nano CuO and nano PbO, while few new weak peaks were observed resulting from the lattice defects and new structural arrangements and chemical bonds between nano CuO and nano PbO during a high-energy grinding process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transition electron microscopy (TEM) observations exhibited that the particle sizes of the CuO/PbO NMOs were distributed in the range of 10-20 nm. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) techniques verified that CuO/PbO NMOs with a CuO/PbO molar ratio of 1:1 presented the best catalytic effect for AP thermal decomposition among the other CuO/PbO NMOs, as well as the single nano CuO and nano PbO. The outstanding catalytic performance is mainly reflected as follows: shifting the peak temperature of AP in high-temperature decomposition stages from 441.3 to 347.6 °C, increasing the decomposition heat of AP from 941 to 1711 J/g, and decreasing the Gibbs free energy of AP from 199.8 to 172.1 kJ/mol, supporting the existence of a synergistic catalytic effect between nano CuO and nano PbO.

Mineralization of aniline in aqueous solution by sono-activated peroxydisulfate enhanced with PbO semiconductor

Oxidative degradation of aniline in aqueous solution was performed by the sono-activated peroxydisulfate coupled with PbO process, wherein a dramatic synergistic effect was found. Experiments were carried out in the batch-wise mode to investigate the influence of various operation parameters on the sonocatalytic behavior, such as ultrasonic power intensity, peroxydisulfate anion concentrations and PbO dosages. According to the scavenging effect of ethanol, methanol and tert-butyl alcohol, the principal oxidizing agents were presumed to be sulfate radicals descended from peroxydisulfate anions, activated via ultrasound or sonocatalysis of PbO. Based on the results attained from gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer, it was hypothesized that aniline was initially oxidized into iminobenzene radicals, followed with formation of nitrosobenzene, p-benzoquinonimine and nitrobenzene respectively. Condensation of nitrosobenzene with aniline generated azobenzene. Phenol was detected as one of degradation intermediates, which was sequentially converted into hydroquinone and p-benzoquinone.

One-dimensional polymeric iodoplumbate hybrids with lanthanide complex cations: syntheses, crystal structures, and photoelectric and photocatalytic properties

New iodoplumbate hybrids were prepared using lanthanide complexes as SDAs. They exhibit a high photocurrent response, current density and photocatalytic activity in the degradation of CV.
