Abstract
Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a major complication of diabetes and is associated with a high risk of lower limb amputation and mortality. During their lifetime, 19%-34% of patients with diabetes can develop DFU. It is estimated that 61% of DFU become infected and 15% of those with DFU require amputation. Furthermore, developing a DFU increases the risk of mortality by 50%-68% at 5 years, higher than some cancers. Current standard management of DFU includes surgical debridement, the use of topical dressings and wound decompression, vascular assessment, and glycemic control. Among these methods, local treatment with dressings builds a protective physical barrier, maintains a moist environment, and drains the exudate from DFU wounds. This review summarizes the development, pathophysiology, and healing mechanisms of DFU. The latest research progress and the main application of dressings in laboratory and clinical stage are also summarized. The dressings discussed in this review include traditional dressings (gauze, oil yarn, traditional Chinese medicine, and others), basic dressings (hydrogel, hydrocolloid, sponge, foam, film agents, and others), bacteriostatic dressings, composite dressings (collagen, nanomaterials, chitosan dressings, and others), bioactive dressings (scaffold dressings with stem cells, decellularized wound matrix, autologous platelet enrichment plasma, and others), and dressings that use modern technology (3D bioprinting, photothermal effects, bioelectric dressings, microneedle dressings, smart bandages, orthopedic prosthetics and regenerative medicine). The dressing management challenges and limitations are also summarized. The purpose of this review is to help readers understand the pathogenesis and healing mechanism of DFU, help physicians select dressings correctly, provide an updated overview of the potential of biomaterials and devices and their application in DFU management, and provide ideas for further exploration and development of dressings. Proper use of dressings can promote DFU healing, reduce the cost of treating DFU, and reduce patient pain.

Abstract
The contamination of water by dyes in high concentrations is a worldwide concern, and it has prompted the development of efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly materials and technologies for water purification. The hydration and adsorption capacity for methylene blue (MB) in biocomposites (BCs) based on cellulose nanofiber (CNF) (0 to 2 wt%) were studied. BCs were synthesized through a simple and straightforward route and characterized by spectroscopy, microscopic techniques and thermogravimetric analysis, among others. Hydration studies showed that BCs prepared with 2 wt% of CNF can absorb large volumes of water, approximately 2274 % in the case of poly 2-acrylamide-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (PAMPS)-CNF and 2408 % in poly sodium 4-styrene sulfonate (PSSNa)-CNF. These BCs showed outstanding adsorption capacity for highly concentrated MB solutions (4536 mg g-1 PAMPS-CNF and 11,930 mg g-1 PSSNa-CNF). It was confirmed that the adsorption mechanism is through electrostatic interactions. Finally, BCs showed high MB adsorption efficiency after several sorption-desorption cycles and on a simulated textile effluent. Furthermore, the theoretical results showed a preferential interaction between MB and the semiflexible polymer chains at the lowest energy setting. The development and study of a new adsorbent material with high MB removal performance that is easy to prepare, economical and reusable for potential use in water purification treatments was successfully achieved.

Abstract
A novel gelator (1) based on a bis-pyridine derivative was designed and synthesized, which could form stable gels in methanol, ethanol, acetonitrile, ethyl acetate, DMF/H2O (4/1, v/v) and DMSO/H2O (4/1, v/v). The self-assembly process of gelator 1 was studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence emission spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction and a water contact angle experiment. Gelator 1 exhibited obvious AIE behavior. On the base of its AIE, the gel of 1 could detect Hg2+, which resulted in fluorescence quenching and a gel–sol transition. 1H NMR titration experiments with Hg2+ revealed that the metal coordination interaction induced the fluorescence quenching and the breakdown of the noncovalent interaction in the gel system. This research provides a new molecular mode for designing a functional self-assembly gel system.

Abstract
Primary bone tumors especially, sarcomas affect adolescents the most because it originates from osteoblasts cells responsible for bone growth. Chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy are the most often used clinical treatments. Regrettably, surgical resection frequently fails to entirely eradicate the tumor, which is the primary cause of metastasis and postoperative recurrence, leading to a high death rate. Additionally, bone tumors frequently penetrate significant regions of bone, rendering them incapable of self-repair, and impairing patients' quality of life. As a result, treating bone tumors and regenerating bone in the clinic is difficult. In recent decades, numerous sorts of alternative therapy approaches have been investigated due to a lack of approved treatments. Among the novel therapeutic approaches, hydrogel-based anticancer therapy has cleared the way for the development of new targeted techniques for treating bone cancer and bone regeneration. They include strategies such as co-delivery of several drug payloads, enhancing their biodistribution and transport capabilities, normalizing accumulation, and optimizing drug release profiles to decrease the limitations of current therapy. This review discusses current advances in functionalized hydrogels to develop a new technique for treating bone tumors by reducing postoperative tumor recurrence and promoting tissue repair.

Abstract
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) accounts for 8.7% of the global blindness and neovascular form of AMD (nAMD) occupies a large proportion of severe visual loss and legal blindness caused by AMD with a relatively low incidence rate. Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is overwhelmingly responsible for the occurrence of nAMD as bleeding and fluid leakage followed by abnormal formation of blood vessels could directly lead to loss of central vision so that reduce the choroidal angiogenesis is an ideal treatment method of nAMD. VEGF is an important cytokine which promote the signaling pathway of angiogenesis and the abnormal expression of VEGF is verified in great many CNV cases. Several anti-VEGF drugs have been widely used in clinical treatments such as ranibizumab, bevacizumab and aflibercept. Conbercept, as an originally developed drug in China, has attracted great attention. For the purpose of better treatment efficacy, our group designed a short chain peptide (Sequence: DDIIIRH-NH₂, M.W.880.99) for controlled drug release to remedy the drawback of the short half-time period. The peptide could self-assembled into a stable 'hydrogel under pH 7.4 condition and the 3D structure was clearly observed in TEM study. Rheological study exhibited its great injectability so that the hydrogel was a material for intravitreal injection. Statistics exhibited that the hydrogel could release approximately 50% of total conbercept. The In vitro experiments showed that either dose-dependent or the time-dependent incubation with peptide would not decrease the cell viability of HREC, revealing that the peptide was biocompatible. The most important is that co-incubation with HREC obviously reduced the HREC proliferation and tube formation induced by VEGF, ensuring its potential for the treatment efficacy of nAMD.

Abstract
Osteoarticular Tuberculosis (TB) is a challenging issue because of its chronicity and recurrence. Many drug delivery systems (DDSs) have been developed for general chemotherapy. Herein, we take advantage of instant hydrogelation to in situ encapsulate drugs onto implants intraoperatively, optimizing the drug release profile against osteoarticular TB. First-line chemodrugs, i.e. rifampicin (RFP) and isoniazid (INH) are firstly loaded on tricalcium phosphate (TCP). Then, the encapsulating hydrogel is fabricated by dipping in chitosan (CS) and β-glycerophosphate (β-GP) solution and heating at 80 °C for 40 min. The hydrogel encapsulation inhibits explosive drug release initially, but maintains long-term drug release (INH, 158 days; RFP, 53 days) in vitro. Therefore, this technique could inhibit bone destruction and inflammation from TB effectively in vivo, better than our previous ex situ prepared DDSs. The encapsulating technology, i.e. instant hydrogelation of drug-loaded implants, shows potential for regulating the type and ratio of drugs, elastic and viscous modulus of the hydrogel according to the state of illness intraoperatively for optimal drug release.

Abstract
AIM Folate-conjugated Pluronic F87-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) block copolymer (FA-F87-PLGA) was synthesized to encapsulate anticancer drug Paclitaxel (PTX) for targeted drug delivery. To further improve the curative effect, D-α-tocopheryl poly(ethylene glycol) 1000 succinate (TPGS or Vitamin E TPGS) was added to form FA-F87-PLGA/TPGS mixed NPs. METHODS FA-F87-PLGA was synthesized by the ring-opening polymerization and the structure was characterized. PTX-loaded nanoparticles were prepared with the nanoprecipitation method. The physicochemical characteristics were studied to determine the appropriate dose ratio of the FA-F87-PLGA to TPGS. The cytotoxicity against Ovarian Cancer Cells (OVCAR-3) was determined by MTT assay. The Area-Under-the Curve (AUC) and half-life were measured in the vivo pharmacokinetic studies. RESULTS Based on the optimization of particle size and embedding rate of PTX-loaded mixed NPs, the appropriate dosage ratio of FA-F87-PLGA to TPGS was finally determined to be 5:3. According to in vitro release studies, the cumulative release rate of PTX-loaded FA-F87-PLGA/TPGS mixed NPs was 92.04%, which was higher than that of nanoparticles without TPGS. The cytotoxicity studies showed that the IC50 value of PTX-loaded FA-F87-PLGA/TPGS decreased by 75.4 times and 19.7 times after 72 h treatment compared with free PTX injections and PTX-loaded FA-F87-PLGA NPs, respectively. In vivo pharmacokinetic studies indicated that FA-F87-PLGA/TPGS mixed NPs had a longer drug metabolism time and a larger Area-Under-the-Curve (AUC) compared with free PTX injections. CONCLUSION FA-F87-PLGA/TPGS mixed NPs are potential candidates for targeted drug delivery systems.

Abstract
Issues caused by maxillofacial tumours involve not only dealing with tumours but also repairing jaw bone defects. In traditional tumour therapy, the systemic toxicity of chemotherapeutic drugs, invasive surgical resection, intractable tumour recurrence, and metastasis are major threats to the patients' lives in the clinic. Fortunately, biomaterial-based intervention can improve the efficiency of tumour treatment and decrease the possibility of recurrence and metastasis, suggesting new promising antitumour therapies. In addition, maxillofacial bone tissue defects caused by tumours and their treatment can negatively affect the physiological and psychological health of patients, and investment in treatment can result in a multitude of burdens to society. Biomaterials are promising options because they have good biocompatibility and bioactive properties for stimulation of bone regeneration. More interestingly, an integrated material regimen that combines tumour therapy with bone repair is a promising treatment option. Herein, we summarized traditional and biomaterial-mediated maxillofacial tumour treatments and analysed biomaterials for bone defect repair. Furthermore, we proposed a promising and superior design of dual-functional biomaterials for simultaneous tumour therapy and bone regeneration to provide a new strategy for managing maxillofacial tumours and improve the quality of life of patients in the future.

Abstract
Major trends in controlled radical polymerization (CRP) or reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP), the most efficient method of synthesis of well-defined homo- and copolymers with specified parameters and properties, are critically analyzed. Recent advances associated with the three classical versions of CRP: nitroxide mediated polymerization, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization, are considered. Particular attention is paid to the prospects for the application of photoinitiation and photocatalysis in CRP. This approach, which has been intensively explored recently, brings synthetic methods of polymer chemistry closer to the light-induced processes of macromolecular synthesis occurring in living organisms. Examples are given of practical application of CRP techniques to obtain industrially valuable, high-tech polymeric products.

Abstract
The fabrication of functional tissue or organs substitutes has always been the pursuit of goals in the field of tissue engineering. But even biocompatible tissue-engineered scaffolds still suffer from immune rejection, subsequent long-term oxidative stress and inflammation, which can delay normal tissue repair and regeneration. As a well-known natural antioxidant, polyphenols have been widely used in tissue engineering in recent years. The introduced polyphenols not only reduce the damage of oxidative stress to normal tissues, but show specific affinity to functional molecules, such as receptors, enzyme, transcription and transduction factors, etc. Therefore, polyphenols can promote the recovery process of damaged tissues by both regulating tissue microenvironment and participating in cell events, which embody specifically in antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and growth-promoting properties. In addition, based on its hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties, polyphenols have been widely used to improve the mechanical properties and anti-degradation properties of tissue engineering scaffolds. In this review, the research advances of tissue engineering scaffolds containing polyphenols is discussed systematically from the aspects of action mechanism, introduction method and regulation effect of polyphenols, in order to provide references for the rational design of polyphenol-related functional scaffolds.

Abstract
We here describe the synthesis of a novel peptide/polymer-conjugate, embedding the amyloid-β (Aβ) protein core sequence Leu-Val-Phe-Phe (LVFF, Aβ17-20) via RAFT polymerization. Based on a novel chain transfer-agent, the "grafting-from" approach effectively generates the well-defined peptide-polymer conjugates with appreciably high monomer conversion rate, resulting in mechanically stiffer peptide-functional cross-linked polymeric hydrogels.

A bio-inspired magnetic natural hydrogel containing gelatin and alginate as a drug delivery system for cancer chemotherapy. Int J Biol Macromol 2020; 156:438-445. [PMID: 32298719 DOI: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2020.04.074] [Citation(s) in RCA: 66] [Impact Index Per Article: 16.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/29/2020] [Revised: 04/09/2020] [Accepted: 04/11/2020] [Indexed: 12/11/2022]
Abstract
This study aimed to design and development of a magnetic natural hydrogel based on alginate (Alg), gelatin (Gel), and Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as an efficient and "smart" drug delivery system (DDS) for cancer therapy. First, Alg was partially oxidized (OAlg), and then the Alg-Gel chemical hydrogel was synthesized through "Shift-Base" condensation reaction. Afterward, Fe3O4 NPs were incorporated into the hydrogel through in situ chemical co-precipitation approach. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image exhibited that the fabricated Alg-Gel hydrogel has porous microstructure without microphase separation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the well-defined formation of Fe3O4 NPs throughout the Alg-Gel hydrogel with spherical shapes in the size range of 25 ± 10 nm. Saturation magnetization (δs) value of the Alg-Gel/Fe3O4 was obtained to be 31 emu g-1 that represent proper magnetic property for "smart" drug delivery purposes. The obtained Alg-Gel/Fe3O4 was loaded with doxorubicin hydrochloride (Dox), and its drug loading and encapsulation efficiencies as well as its anticancer activity was investigated against Hela cells. The formulated Alg-Gel/Fe3O4-Dox exhibited pH-dependent drug release behavior due to presence of carboxylic acid groups in the DDS. According to the results, the Alg-Gel/Fe3O4 magnetic hydrogel can be considered as an efficient and "smart" DDS for cancer therapy and diagnosis.
