A review on treatment of disinfection byproduct precursors by biological activated carbon process

The insightful water quality analysis and predictive model establishment via machine learning in dual-source drinking water distribution system

Dual-source drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) over single-source water supply systems are becoming more practical in providing water for megacities. However, the more complex water supply problems are also generated, especially at the hydraulic junction. Herein, we have sampled for a one-year and analyzed the water quality at the hydraulic junction of a dual-source DWDS. The results show that visible changes in drinking water quality, including turbidity, pH, UV254, DOC, residual chlorine, and trihalomethanes (TMHs), are observed at the sample point between 10 and 12 km to one drinking water plant. The average concentration of residual chlorine decreases from 0.74 ± 0.05 mg/L to 0.31 ± 0.11 mg/L during the water supplied from 0 to 10 km and then increases to 0.75 ± 0.05 mg/L at the end of 22 km. Whereas the THMs shows an opposite trend, the concentration reaches to a peak level at hydraulic junction area (10-12 km). According to parallel factor (PARAFAC) and high-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) analysis, organic matters vary significantly during water distribution, and tryptophan-like substances and amino acids are closely related to the level of THMs. The hydraulic junction area is confirmed to be located at 10-12 km based on the water quality variation. Furthermore, data-driven models are established by machine learning (ML) with test R2 higher than 0.8 for THMs prediction. And the SHAP analysis explains the model results and identifies the positive (water temperature and water supply distance) and negative (residual chlorine and pH) key factors influencing the THMs formation. This study conducts a deep understanding of water quality at the hydraulic junction areas and establishes predictive models for THMs formation in dual-sources DWDS.

Analysis of the seasonal water quality variation at the hydraulic junction of a dual-source water distribution system

The implementation of a dual-source water supply system offers an increased level of reliability in water provision; however, intricate hydraulic dynamics introduce apprehensions regarding water safety at the hydraulic junction. In this study, we gathered data of the water quality at the hydraulic junction of a dual-source water supply system (plant A and plant B, sampling site A10 was near plant A, and sampling site A12 was near plant B) for one year in Suzhou Industrial Park. Our findings indicated that seasonal variations and water temperature exerted significant influence on the composition and formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Notably, during the warmer months spanning from June to September, the concentration of trihalomethanes was the highest at the hydraulic junction, whereas the concentration of residual chloride was the lowest. The analysis on DBPs revealed that more Br-containing precursors in water in plant A resulted in the accumulation of more Br-containing DBPs at A10, whereas the highest concentration of Cl-containing DBPs accumulated at A12. The analysis of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition indicated an increase in concentration at A10 and A12 compared with that in plant A and plant B. The highest concentration of humic acids was observed at A10, whereas A12 accumulated the highest concentration of aromatic proteins and microbial metabolites. Owing to the fluctuations in water consumption patterns at the hydraulic junction, the water quality was susceptible to variability, thereby posing an elevated risk. Consequently, extensive efforts are warranted to ensure the maintenance of water safety and quality at this critical interface.

Microplastics and associated chemicals in drinking water: A review of their occurrence and human health implications

Microplastics (MPs) have entered drinking water (DW) via various pathways, raising concerns about their potential health impacts. This study provides a comprehensive review of MP-associated chemicals, such as oligomers, plasticizers, stabilizers, and ultraviolet (UV) filters that can be leached out during DW treatment and distribution. The leaching of these chemicals is influenced by various environmental and operating factors, with three major ones identified: MP concentration and polymer type, pH, and contact time. The leaching process is substantially enhanced during the disinfection step of DW treatment, due to ultraviolet light and/or disinfectant-triggered reactions. The study also reviewed human exposure to MPs and associated chemicals in DW, as well as their health impacts on the human nervous, digestive, reproductive, and hepatic systems, especially the neuroendocrine toxicity of endocrine-disrupting chemicals. An overview of MPs in DW, including tap water and bottled water, was also presented to enable a background understanding of MPs-associated chemicals. In short, certain chemicals leached from MPs in DW can have significant implications for human health and demand further research on their long-term health impacts, mitigation strategies, and interactions with other pollutants such as disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). This study is anticipated to facilitate the research and management of MPs in DW and beverages.

Effect of micropollutants on disinfection byproducts and antibiotic resistance genes in drinking water in the process of biological activated carbon treatment

The biofilm stress response of biological activated carbon (BAC) was investigated under prolonged exposure to sulfadiazine and 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, simulating complex emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) that are mainly involved in the formation of nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Under trace complex EOCs condition (2 µg/L), N-DBP precursors and abundance of ARGs increased significantly in BAC effluent. The total formation potential of haloacetonitriles (HANs) and halonitromethanes (HNMs) was 751.47 ± 2.98 ng/L, which was much higher than the control group (440.67 ± 13.38 ng/L without EOCs). Similarly, the relative abundance of ARGs was more than twice that in the control group. The complex EOCs induce excessive extracellular polymeric substance secretion (EPS), thereby causing more N-DBP precursors and stronger horizontal gene transfer. Metagenome analysis revealed that functional amino acid and protein biosynthesis genes were overexpressed compared to the control group, causing more EPS to be secreted into the external environment. Complex EOCs promote Cobetia, Clostridium, and Streptomyces dominance, contributing to the production of N-DBP precursors and ARGs. For the first time, in addition to the direct hazards of the EOCs, this study successfully revealed the indirect water quality risks of complex EOCs from the microbial stress response during BAC treatment. Synergistic regulation of EOCs and microorganisms is important for tap water security.

Total organic halogen (TOX) in drinking water: Occurrence, correlation analysis, and precursor removal during drinking water treatment

Total organic halogen (TOX) in drinking water provides a measurement of the overall organic halogenated disinfection by-products (DBPs) formed during disinfection. Yangtze River Delta is one of the regions with the highest population density, the fastest urbanization process, and the most severe water pollution in China. Collecting water samples from full-scale drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) in this region, this study firstly surveyed TOX occurrence in drinking water. Besides, the correlation of TOX formation potential (TOXFP) and trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) with general water quality parameters (e.g., dissolved organic carbon [DOC], UV254, and specific ultraviolet absorbance) and the removal efficiencies of TOX precursors by different water treatment processes were also investigated. TOX levels in DWTP effluents (i.e., finished water) ranged from 29 to 165 μg/L (median 67 μg/L), and those in simulated distribution system waters ranged from 101 to 276 μg/L (median 158 μg/L). There were generally higher linear regression coefficient values for raw water (R2 = 0.51-0.88) than for treated water (R2 = 0.33-0.64) in terms of the relationship between DBP formation potentials and general parameters. However, a relatively stronger correlation between THMFP and TOXFP was observed for treated water (R2 = 0.80, p < 0.001) than for raw water (R2 = 0.64, p < 0.001). The overall treatment efficiencies of investigated parameters in DWTPs generally followed the order of UV254 > DOC > TOX precursors > THM precursors. Notably, the overall removal rates of DOC and TOX precursors in summer (averaging 59 % and 54 %, respectively) were obviously higher than those in winter (averaging 39 % and 38 %, respectively), which was assumed to be related to the seasonal variation of bioactivity in sand filter. These results could expand the knowledge of TOX in drinking water, and provide valuable perspectives to water industry and DBP research.

Pressure-driven membrane filtration technology for terminal control of organic DBPs: A review

Disinfection by-products (DBPs), a series of undesired secondary contaminants formed during the disinfection processes, deteriorate water quality, threaten human health and endanger ecological safety. Membrane-filtration technologies are commonly used in the advanced water treatment and have shown a promising performance for removing trace contaminants. In order to gain a clearer understanding of the behavior of DBPs in membrane-filtration processes, this work dedicated to: (1) comprehensively reviewed the retention efficiency of microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) for DBPs. (2) summarized the mechanisms involved size exclusion, electrostatic repulsion and adsorption in the membrane retention of DBPs. (3) In conjunction with principal component analysis, discussed the influence of various factors (such as the characteristics of membrane and DBPs, feed solution composition and operating conditions) on the removal efficiency. In general, the characteristics of the membranes (salt rejection, molecular weight cut-off, zeta potential, etc.) and DBPs (molecular size, electrical property, hydrophobicity, polarity, etc.) fundamentally determine the membrane-filtration performance on retaining DBPs, and the actual operating environmental factors (such as solute concentration, coexisting ions/NOMs, pH and transmembrane pressure) exert a positive/negative impact on performance to some extent. Current researches indicate that NF and RO can be effective in removing DBPs, and looking forward, we recommend that multiple factors should be taken into account that optimize the existed membrane-filtration technologies, rationalize the selection of membrane products, and develop novel membrane materials targeting the removal of DBPs.

Traditional methods and biosensors for detecting disinfection by-products in water: A review

In recent years, pollution caused by disinfection by-products (DBPs) has become a global concern. Initially, there were fewer contaminants, and the mechanism of their generation was unclear; however, the number of contaminants has increased exponentially as a result of rapid industrialization and numerous economic activities (e.q., during the outbreak of COVID-19 a surge in the use of chlorinated disinfectants was observed). DBP toxicity results in various adverse health effects and organ failure in humans. In addition, it profoundly affects other forms of life, including animals, plants, and microorganisms. This review comprehensively discusses the pre-treatment methods of traditional and emerging DBPs and the technologies applied for their detection. Additionally, this paper provides a detailed discussion of the principles, applicability, and characteristics of traditional large-scale instrumentation methods (such as gas/liquid/ion chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry) for detecting DBPs based on their respective detection techniques. At the same time, the design, functionality, classification, and characteristics of rapid detection technologies (such as biosensors) are also detailed and analyzed.

Trace determination of disinfection by-products in drinking water by cyclic ion chromatography with large-volume direct injection

A novel cyclic ion chromatography (IC) system was developed for the simultaneous determination of trace disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water. Five DBPs (chlorite, bromate, chlorate, dichloroacetic acid, and trichloroacetic acid) were sensitively determined by large-volume direct injection, and the interferences of dominant inorganic anions present in water were eliminated online through the cyclic determination of the target analytes. Under optimized conditions, the obtained limits of detection (LODs) were in the range of 0.18-1.91 μg L^-1 based on a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 3 and an injection volume of 1.0 mL. The RSDs for peak area and retention time were in the range of 0.13-1.03% and 1.24-4.29%, respectively. Satisfactory recoveries between 92.3% and 106.4% were obtained by adding three concentration gradients of standards to the drinking water samples. The proposed method has advantages such as high sensitivity, facile automation, and no sample pretreatment, and might be a promising approach for routine analysis.

Identification of key precursors contributing to the formation of CX3R-type disinfection by-products along the typical full-scale drinking water treatment processes

Identification and characterization of disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors could help optimize drinking water treatment processes and improve the quality of finished water. This study comprehensively investigated the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM), the hydrophilicity and molecule weight (MW) of DBP precursor and DBP-associated toxicity along the typical full-scale treatment processes. The results showed that dissolved organic carbon and dissolved organic nitrogen content, the fluorescence intensity and the SUVA₂₅₄ value in raw water significantly decreased after the whole treatment processes. Conventional treatment processes were in favor of the removal of high-MW and hydrophobic DOM, which are important precursors of trihalomethane and haloacetic acid. Compared with conventional treatment processes, Ozone integrated with biological activated carbon (O₃-BAC) processes enhanced the removal efficiencies of DOM with different MW and hydrophobic fractions, leading to a further decrease in almost all DBP formation potential and DBP-associated toxicity. However, almost 50% of the detected DBP precursors in raw water has not been removed after the coagulation-sedimentation-filtration integrated with O₃-BAC advanced treatment processes. These remaining precursors were found to be mainly hydrophilic and low-MW (< 1.0 kDa) organics. Moreover, they would largely contribute to the formation of haloacetaldehydes and haloacetonitriles, which dominated the calculated cytotoxicity. Since current drinking water treatment process could not effectively control the highly toxic DBPs, the removal of hydrophilic and low-MW organics in drinking water treatment plants should be focused on in the future.

Transformation of dissolved organic matter during UV/peracetic acid treatment

Peracetic acid combined ultraviolet (UV/PAA) process has garnered growing attention as a promising advanced oxidation process (AOP) for wastewater treatment, but the corresponding transformation of ubiquitous dissolved organic matter (DOM) under this AOP remains unknown. This study systematically investigated the changes in characteristics and composition of DOM under UV/PAA, as well as the underlying mechanisms by multiple spectroscopic analyses and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. UV/PAA treatment dramatically decreased aromaticity, apparent molecular weight, and fluorescent abundance of DOM with the production of more oxidized and saturated compounds. The reactive species (i.e., ^·OH and CH₃C(O)O^·/CH₃C(O)OO^·) in UV/PAA contributed primarily to DOM changes but showed different reaction selectivity and mechanisms. ^·OH reacts with DOM components and mainly yields oxygenation products via a radical addition pathway. Comparatively, the electron transfer route is more likely to occur in CH₃C(O)O^·/CH₃C(O)OO^·-induced DOM transformation. Aside from oxygenation products, electron transfer could exclusively generate decarboxylation products and distinguishes CH₃C(O)O^·/CH₃C(O)OO^·-based AOPs from ^·OH-based AOPs. These findings significantly improve knowledge of DOM alterations under UV/PAA AOP at both the bulk and molecular levels.

Chlorination disinfection by-products in Southeast Asia: A review on potential precursor, formation, toxicity assessment, and removal technologies

This review discusses disinfection by-products' (DBPs) potential precursors, formation, and toxicity, alongside available research on the treatment of DBPs in Southeast Asian countries' water sources. Although natural organic matter (NOM) in the form of humic and fulvic acids is the major precursor of DBPs formation, the presence of anthropogenic organic matter (AOM) also plays essential roles during disinfection using chlorine. NOM has been observed in water sources in Southeast Asian countries, with a relatively high concentration in peat-influenced water sources and a relatively low concentration in non-peat-influenced water sources. Similarly, AOMs, such as microplastics, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), have also been detected in water sources in Southeast Asian countries. Although studies regarding DBPs in Southeast Asian countries are available, they focus on regulated DBPs. Here, the formation potential of unregulated DBPs is also discussed. In addition, the toxicity associated with extreme DBPs' formation potential, as well as the effectiveness of treatments such as conventional coagulation, filtration, adsorption, and ozonation in reducing DBPs' formation potential in Southeast Asian sources of water, is also analyzed.

A review of long-term change in surface water natural organic matter concentration in the northern hemisphere and the implications for drinking water treatment

Reduced atmospheric acid deposition has given rise to recovery from acidification - defined as increasing pH, acid neutralization capacity (ANC), or alkalinity in surface waters. Strong evidence of recovery has been reported across North America and Europe, driving chemical responses. The primary chemical responses identified in this review were increasing concentration and changing character of natural organic matter (NOM) towards predominantly hydrophobic nature. The concentration of NOM also influenced trace metal cycling as many browning surface waters also reported increases in Fe and Al. Further, climate change and other factors (e.g., changing land use) act in concert with reductions in atmospheric deposition to contribute to widespread browning and will have a more pronounced effect as deposition stabilizes. The observed water quality trends have presented challenges for drinking water treatment (e.g., increased chemical dosing, poor filter operations, formation of disinfection by-products) and many facilities may be under designed as a result. This comprehensive review has identified key research areas to be addressed, including 1) a need for comprehensive monitoring programs (e.g., larger timescales; consistency in measurements) to assess climate change impacts on recovery responses and NOM dynamics, and 2) a better understanding of drinking water treatment vulnerabilities and the transition towards robust treatment technologies and solutions that can adapt to climate change and other drivers of changing water quality.

Fluorescence Detection of Trace Disinfection Byproducts by Ag Nanoprism-Modulated Lanthanide MOFs

Disinfection byproducts (DBPs), as an emerging water pollutant, present increasing concern and risk in public health and water safety. Due to their low concentration levels and inherent similarity in molecular structures, sensitive and accurate determination of DBPs is still a challenge especially for onsite or online detection. Herein, a self-regulated fluorescent probe based on the Ag nanoprism-modified lanthanide metal-organic framework (AgNPR@EuMOF) is designed for trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) detection. The EuMOF is constructed with Eu as the metal node and 5-boronoisophthalic acid as the ligand. By introducing sulfhydryl groups into EuMOF, AgNPR can be anchored on the EuMOF surface through Ag-S bonds, enabling the synthesis of stable AgNPR@EuMOF composites. During the sensing process, the triangle AgNPR will react with the organic halogen molecule, accomplished with the blue shift of surface plasmon resonance absorption peak and the significant change in the fluorescence of EuMOF. This probe can detect TCAA in a wide concentration range (0.1-40 μM) with high sensitivity and specificity. The density functional theory calculation on binding energies between DBPs and AgNPR suggests that TCAA has the largest interaction ability with AgNPR than other DBPs. Moreover, the detection of TCAA in real tap water and swimming pool water is also demonstrated with high accuracy. The reported AgNPR@EuMOF represents one of the pioneer fluorescence probes in DBP detection, which holds great promise for onsite or online analysis of trace DBPs in water.
