Abstract
An unprecedented divergent aromatization reaction of α-halobenzyl γ-butenolides has been described for the selective and concise synthesis of highly substituted benzo and higher π-extended fluorenones, and 1,3-disubstituted naphthalenes depending on the migration ability of the quaternary α-substituent. This aromatization switch from Ag+-mediated planarization to ylidenebutenolides likely originates from selective protonation on the enolic double bond rather than the benzyl halides by TfOH.

Abstract
An asymmetric desymmetrization of fluorene-derived meso-epoxides is disclosed for the construction of chiral fluorenes bearing an all-carbon quaternary stereocenter at C9. This desymmetrization is catalyzed by a chiral (salen)CrIII complex via remote stereocontrol, producing diverse chiral fluorenes with excellent yields and stereoselectivity. The practicality of this protocol was demonstrated through the transformation of the obtained products to some intriguing enantioenriched polymerizable monomers.

Abstract
Stable organic radicals, which possess half-filled orbitals in the vicinity of the Fermi energy, are promising candidates for electronic devices. In this Letter, using a combination of scanning-tunneling-microscopy-based break junction (STM-BJ) experiments and quantum transport theory, a stable fluorene-based radical is investigated. We demonstrate that the transport properties of a series of fluorene derivatives can be tuned by controlling the degree of localization of certain orbitals. More specifically, radical 36-FR has a delocalized half-filled orbital resulting in Breit-Wigner resonances, leading to an unprecedented conductance enhancement of 2 orders of magnitude larger than the neutral nonradical counterpart (36-FOH). In other words, conversion from a closed-shell fluorene derivative to the free radical in 36-FR opens an electron transport path which massively enhances the conductance. This new understanding of the role of radicals in single-molecule junctions opens up a novel design strategy for single-molecule-based spintronic devices.

Abstract
A series of 3-hydroxy-fluorene-2-carboxylate compounds were prepared from Michael addition of acetoacetate to 2-benzylideneindan-l-one followed by Robinson annulation and aromatization. In this reaction, we were able to isolate two Robinson annulation products and characterize them. This sequential reaction could proceed without the isolation of intermediates to give the desired products directly in reasonable yields.

Abstract
Ligands based upon the 4,5-diazafluorene core are an important class of emerging ligands in organometallic chemistry, but the structure and electronic properties of these ligands have received less attention than they deserve. Here, we show that 9,9'-dimethyl-4,5-diazafluorene (Me2 daf) can stabilize low-valent complexes through charge delocalization into its conjugated π-system. Using a new platform of [Cp*Rh] complexes with three accessible formal oxidation states (+III, +II, and +I), we show that the methylation in Me2 daf is protective, blocking Brønsted acid-base chemistry commonly encountered with other daf-based ligands. Electronic absorption spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of a family of eleven new compounds, including the unusual Cp*Rh(Me2 daf), reveal features consistent with charge delocalization driven by π-backbonding into the LUMO of Me2 daf, reminiscent of behavior displayed by the workhorse 2,2'-bipyridyl ligand. Taken together with spectrochemical data demonstrating clean conversion between oxidation states, our findings show that 9,9'-dialkylated daf-type ligands are promising building blocks for applications in reductive chemistry and catalysis.

Abstract
Two new smectic C* mesogens containing a hexyloxy side chain and an azafluorenone (3a) or azafluorenol (3b) core were synthesized using a combined directed ortho metalation-directed remote metalation-Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling strategy. 3b was formed in 10 steps and 25% overall yield based on starting benzamide 1a. 3a forms a nematic phase, while 3b forms a smectic A phase. The large temperature range of the smectic phase for the azafluorenol 3b is indicative of mesophase stabilization by intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl group and pyridine nitrogen of neighboring 3b molecules.

Abstract
An appropriate and efficient Q-tube-assisted palladium-catalyzed strategy for the synthesis of novel, unparalleled diaza-dibenzo[a,e]azulene and diaza-benzo[a]fluorene derivatives has been sophisticated, which includes oxygen and AcOH-induced oxidative C(sp3)-C(sp2) cross-dehydrogenative coupling reactions of 1-amino-2-imino-4-arylpyridine-3-carbonitriles with benzocyclic ketones such as benzosuberone, tetralone, thiochromone, and chromone, respectively. This Q-tube gas purging kit assisted-protocol features safe due to easy pressing and sealing, a wide substrate scope, easy workup and purifying phases, and the use of O2 as a benign oxidant, in addition to being scalable and having a high atom economy. The suggested mechanistic pathway includes a formal dehydrative step followed by palladium AcOH-induced CH(sp3)-CH(sp2) oxidative cross-coupling. In this study, X-ray crystallographic analysis has been used to authenticate the targeted products.

Abstract
A three-component synthesis of multisubstituted fluorene derivatives has been developed by devising a rhodium-catalyzed stitching reaction/remote nucleophilic substitution sequence. A variety of nucleophiles can be installed in the second step including both heteroatom and carbon nucleophiles. An efficient synthesis of 5H-benzo[a]fluoren-5-ones has also been realized using N-(2-alkynyl)benzoylpyrrole as the reaction partner through a new reaction pathway.

An Application Exploiting Aurophilic Bonding and iClick to Produce White Light Emitting Materials. Inorg Chem 2020; 59:1893-1904. Abstract
The paper focuses on exploiting aurophilic bonding to produce white light emitting materials. Inorganic Click (iClick) is employed to link two or four Au(I) metal ions through a triazolate bridge. Depending on the choice of phosphine ligand (PEt3 or PPh3), dinuclear Au2-FO or tetranuclear Au4-FO complexes can be controllably synthesized (FO = 2-(9,9-dioctylfluoreneyl-)). The iClick products Au2-FO and Au4-FO are characterized by combustion analysis and multinuclear NMR, TOCSY 1D, 1H-13C gHMBC, and 1H-13C gHSQC. In addition, the photophysical properties of Au2-FO and Au4-FO were examined in THF solution. Transient absorption spectroscopy was employed to elucidate the excited state features of the gold compounds. Solution processed OLEDs were fabricated and characterized, which gave white light electroluminescence with CIE coordinates (0.34, 0.36), as seen referenced to CIE standard illuminant D65 (0.31, 0.32). TDDFT computational analysis of Au2-FO and Au4-FO reveals the origin of light emission. In the case of Au4-FO, direct excitation leads to increased aurophilic bonding in the excited state, and as a result the emission profile is broadened to cover a larger region of the visible spectrum, thus giving white light emission. Designing molecules that can access or increase aurophilic bonding in the excited state provides another tool for fine-tuning the emission profiles of gold complexes.

Abstract
In this work, a series of hyperbranched copolymers with fluorene-alt-carbazole as the branches, three-dimensional-structured spiro[3.3]heptane-2,6-dispirofluorene (SDF) as the core, and iridium 1-(4-bromophenyl)-isoquinoline (acetylacetone) (Ir(Brpiq)2acac) as the dimming group were synthesized by one-pot Suzuki polycondensation for white emission. All copolymers show great thermal stabilities and high hole-transporting ability due to the introduction of the carbazole unit. The hyperbranched structures for copolymers can suppress the interchain interactions efficiently, and help to form amorphous films. The fabricated polymer light-emitting devices (PLEDs) based on the above synthesized copolymers realize good white light emission, and achieve high electroluminescence (EL) performance. For example, for the optimized PLED, the maximum luminance and current efficiency reach 6210 cd m-2 and 6.30 cd A-1, respectively, indicating the synthesized hyperbranched copolymers have potential application in solution-processable white polymer light-emitting diodes.

Abstract
In this study, five ruthenium arene complexes with fluorene-bearing N,N-(1) and N,O-(2) donor Schiff base ligands were synthesized and fully characterized. Cationic ruthenium complexes 3[X], ([Ru(η6-C6H6)(Cl)(fluorene-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-pyridine)][X] (where X = BF4, PF6, BPh4), were obtained by reacting ligand 1 with [Ru(η6-C6H6)Cl2]2 in the presence of NH4X salts, whereas neutral complex 4, Ru(η6-C6H6)(Cl)(fluorene-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-naphtholate), was isolated by reacting ligand 2 with the same precursor. It was possible to obtain a cationic version of the latter, 5[BF4], by reacting 4 with AgBF4 in the presence of pyridine. All compounds were fully characterized by NMR and HR-ESI-MS whereas some of them were also analyzed by single crystal X-ray analysis. Their in vitro antiproliferative activity was also assessed in human breast cancer cell lines, notably MCF-7 and T47D. Complex 4 and its cationic counterpart 5[BF4] were found to be the most cytotoxic compounds of the series (IC50 = 6.2-16.2 μM) and displayed higher antiproliferative activities than cisplatin in both cell lines. It was found that 5[BF4] undergoes a ligand exchange reaction and readily converts to 4 in the presence of 0.1 M NaCl, explaining the similarity in their observed cytotoxicities. Whereas 3[BF4] and 3[PF6] were found inactive at the tested concentrations, 3[BPh4] displayed a considerable cytotoxicity (IC50 = 16.7-27.8 μM). Notably, 3[BPh4], 4 (and 5[BF4]) were active against T47D, a cisplatin resistant cell line. Interestingly, 4 (16.4 μM) was found to be less cytotoxic than 3[BPh4] and cisplatin (6.6 and 7.9 μM, respectively) in breast healthy cells (MCF-12A). However, in comparison to 4 and cisplatin (at 10 μM), a lower in vivo toxicity was observed for complex 3[BPh4] on the development of zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos.

Abstract
Encouraging efforts on the design of high-performance organic materials and smart architecture during the past two decades have made organic light-emitting device (OLED) technology an important competitor for the existing liquid crystal displays. Particularly, the development of phosphorescent materials based on transition metals plays a crucial role for this success. Apart from the extensively studied iridium(III) complexes with d(6) electronic configuration and octahedral geometry, the coordination-unsaturated nature of d(8) transition metal complexes with square-planar structures has been found to provide intriguing spectroscopic and luminescence properties. This article briefly summarizes the development of d(8) platinum(II) and gold(III) complexes and their application studies in the fabrication of phosphorescent OLEDs. An in-depth understanding of the nature of the excited states has offered a great opportunity to fine-tune the emission colors covering the entire visible spectrum as well as to improve their photophysical properties. With good device engineering, high performance vacuum-deposited OLEDs with external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of up to 30 % and solution-processable OLEDs with EQEs of up to 10 % have been realized by modifying the cyclometalated or pincer ligands of these metal complexes. These impressive demonstrations reveal that d(8) metal complexes are promising candidates as phosphorescent materials for OLED applications in displays as well as in solid-state lighting in the future.

Abstract
Metal organic materials are widely investigated to find their suitability for nonlinear optical applications due to the advantage of combined organic and inorganic properties. In this work benzimidazole based metal organic thin films of dichlorobis (1H-Benzimidazole) Co(II) and dichlorobis (1H-Benzimidazole) Cu(II) were deposited by chemical bath deposition method. The deposited films were annealed at 100, 150 and 200 °C to investigate the effect of annealing on the properties of thin films. Surface homogeneity of the films was increased with the annealing temperature due to the surface diffusion of the films and the same was evidently shown by Raman spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy studies. But annealing the films at 200 °C yielded bulk patches on the surface due to the distortion of molecules. Linear and nonlinear optical properties of the films annealed at 150 °C showed relatively higher transmittance and improved nonlinear optical properties than the other as prepared and annealed samples.
