A Chromogenic Probe for Detection of Biologically Important Anions and its Implications for Designing Molecular Logic Gates

Detection of fluoride (F-), acetate (AcO-), and cyanide (CN-) anions is vital from the biological and environmental aspects. In the present contributions, we have introduced a simple Salen-type chromogenic sensor, BEN, to detect these biologically important anions. Changes in UV-visible absorption spectra and color of BEN solution from very pale yellow to pink color are similar for each of these anions and found to be reversible only in the case of F- ions in attendance of HSO4- ions. The estimated limit of detection of BEN solution for detecting F-, AcO-, and CN- anions is found to be below the micromolar (μM) concentration level. Our fabricated handy paper test kit is suitable for qualitatively naked-eye detection of the anions. An immediate quantitative estimation of these important anions is possible using our BEN employing a smartphone, avoiding any costly experimental setup.

Metal element-based adsorbents for phosphorus capture: Chaperone effect, performance and mechanism

Excessive phosphorus (P) enters the water bodies via wastewater discharges or agricultural runoff, triggering serious environmental problems such as eutrophication. In contrast, P as an irreplaceable key resource, presents notable supply-demand contradictions due to ineffective recovery mechanisms. Hence, constructing a system that simultaneously reduce P contaminants and effective recycling has profound theoretical and practical implications. Metal element-based adsorbents, including metal (hydro) oxides, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), exhibit a significant chaperone effect stemming from strong orbital hybridization between their intrinsic Lewis acid sites and P (Lewis base). This review aims to parse the structure-effect relationship between metal element-based adsorbents and P, and explores how to optimize the P removal properties. Special emphasis is given to the formation of the metal-P chemical bond, which not only depends on the type of metal in the adsorbent but also closely relates to its surface activity and pore structure. Then, we delve into the intrinsic mechanisms behind these adsorbents' remarkable adsorption capacity and precise targeting. Finally, we offer an insightful discussion of the prospects and challenges of metal element-based adsorbents in terms of precise material control, large-scale production, P-directed adsorption and effective utilization.

A squaramide cage capable of binding and extracting H2PO4- and HP2O73- in highly polar protic media

A novel squaramide cage (2) binds H2PO4- and HP2O73- with high selectivity and affinity in a highly polar protic solvent system. Receptor 2 is also able to extract these hydrophilic anions into a chloroform phase from water. The X-ray crystal structure demonstrated that compound 2 forms a complex with H2PO4- with 1 : 1 stoichiometry in the solid state.

Anion-exchange facilitated selective extraction of sulfate and phosphate by overcoming the Hofmeister bias

Selective recognition and removal of sulfate and phosphates from aqueous media in the presence of highly competing anions is very demanding because of their biological and environmental implications. In this paper, we present the anion recognition approach for the selective and efficient extraction of sulfate by nitrophenyl-functionalized tris-urea receptors (L₁-L₂) from highly competitive aqueous media with an equivalent concentration of nitrate and other anions. Tetrabutylammonium hydroxide has been used for the first time as a phase transfer anionic extractant for sulfate-exchange from the aqueous phase to the organic phase (dichloromethane) containing a tris-urea receptor (L₁-L₃). The sulfate extraction efficacy of L₂ (≈84-90%) was observed to be higher than those of L₁ (≈76-82%) and L₃ (≈68-75%) in competitive extraction experiments. In contrast, an analogous nitrophenyl-functionalized tris-thiourea receptor (L₄) has been recognized for the selective and efficient extraction of phosphates from aqueous media in the presence of several competing anions including sulfate and nitrate, with ≈85-92% extraction efficiency. In this case, tetrabutylammonium acetate has been used as a phase transfer anionic extractant for phosphate exchange between the two immiscible phases. Due to the higher acidity of tris-thiourea -NH groups in comparison to the analogous tris-urea, tetrabutylammonium hydroxide could deprotonate a hydrogen bond donating -NH group of the thiourea receptor and phosphate extraction was observed to be inefficient in such a case. Several liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) experiments have been carried out to establish the selective removal of sulfate and phosphates by the tripodal receptors from competitive aqueous media having different combinations of two or more anions. The LLE products obtained from organic phases were characterized by NMR (¹H, ¹³C, ³¹P, and ¹⁹F) spectroscopy to affirm the oxoanion selectivity of the receptors and purity of the complexes. The tripodal receptors can easily be recycled for successive extraction cycles by simply washing the LLE products (oxoanion complexes) with a methanol-water (1 : 1, v/v) solvent system followed by filtration.

Selectivity adsorption of sulfate by amino-modified activated carbon during capacitive deionization

ABSTRACTCapacitive deionization (CDI) is an environmentally friendly desalination technique with low energy consumption. However, unmodified carbon electrode materials have poor sulfate selectivity and adsorption capacity. In this work, to improve sulfate selectivity, we prepared activated carbon materials loaded with different amino contents by grafting amino groups via acid treatment for different times. In the competitive ion adsorption experiments, the sulfate selectivity of AC was only 0.64 and the amino-modified AC increased by 1.98-2.52 times due to the formation of stronger hydrogen bonds between the amino group and sulfate. AC-NH₂-4 had the best selectivity and the sulfate selective coefficient was 2.25. The desorption of sulfate was 92.46% within one hour. In addition, the surface of the amino-modified activated carbon showed significantly improved electrochemical properties and better capacitance. The specific capacitance of amino-modified AC in different electrolyte solutions was consistent with the competitive adsorption results. The specific capacitance of amino-modified AC in Na₂SO₄ electrolyte solution was the highest. The modified electrode material also had the advantages of a higher adsorption capacity and excellent regeneration performance after continuous electric adsorption-desorption cycles. Therefore, it may have development potential to selectively adsorb sulfate in practical applications.

Development and Application of Ruthenium(II) and Iridium(III) Based Complexes for Anion Sensing

Improvements in the design of receptors for the detection and quantification of anions are desirable and ongoing in the field of anion chemistry, and remarkable progress has been made in this direction. In this regard, the development of luminescent chemosensors for sensing anions is an imperative and demanding sub-area in supramolecular chemistry. This decade, in particular, witnessed advancements in chemosensors based on ruthenium and iridium complexes for anion sensing by virtue of their modular synthesis and rich chemical and photophysical properties, such as visible excitation wavelength, high quantum efficiency, high luminescence intensity, long lifetimes of phosphorescence, and large Stokes shifts, etc. Thus, this review aims to summarize the recent advances in the development of ruthenium(II) and iridium(III)-based complexes for their application as luminescent chemosensors for anion sensing. In addition, the focus was devoted to designing aspects of polypyridyl complexes of these two transition metals with different recognition motifs, which upon interacting with different inorganic anions, produces desirable quantifiable outputs.

Spectroscopic and Density Functional Studies on the Interaction of a Naphthalene Derivative with Anions

This article highlights the investigation of anion interactions and recognition abilities of naphthalene derivative, [(E)-1-(((4-nitrophenyl)imino)methyl)naphthalen-2-ol], (NIMO) by UV-visible spectroscopically and colorimetrically. NIMO shows selective recognition of F^- ions colorimetrically, and a visual color change from yellow to pink is observed by the naked eye. The F^- ions recognition is fully reversible in the presence of HSO₄^- ions. The limit of F^- ions detection by NIMO could be possible down to 0.033 ppm-level. A paper strips-based test kit has been demonstrated to detect F^- ions selectively by the naked eye, and a smartphone-based method for real sample analysis in the non-aqueous medium has also been demostrated. Spectroscopic behavior is well supported by pK_a value calculation and DFT analysis, to find a correlation with receptor analyte interaction. The optical response of NIMO towards the accumulation of F^- ions and, subsequently, HSO₄^- ions as chemical inputs provides an opportunity to construct INH and IMP molecular logic gates.

Anion Recognition by Benzoxaborole

The binding types (H-bonding or coordinate) and stability constants for complexes of 11 mono- and di-anions with benzoxaborole (1) were determined by ¹H and ¹¹B NMR titrations in DMSO or MeCN. Compared to phenylboronic acid (PBA), 1 is a stronger Lewis acid and a poorer H-bond donor with only one B-OH group, which is expected therefore to recognize anions mostly through the coordinate bonding. This is the case however only with F^-, HPO₄^2-, and PhPO₃^2- anions, which are coordinately bonded to 1, and partially with SO₄^2-, which forms only the H-bonded complex with PBA, but both H-bonded and coordinate complexes with 1. The majority of tested anions (AcO^-, PhPO₃H^-, (PhO)₂PO₂^-, Cl^-, and Br^-) form H-bonded complexes with both 1 and PBA, whereas H₂PO₄^- changes the binding mode from coordinate for PBA to H-bonded for 1. The preferable binding type for each anion is confirmed by calculations of DFT-optimized structures of the anion complexes of 1. The preferable binding type can be rationalized considering the effects of the steric hindrance, more significant for the coordinate bonding, and of increased anion basicity, which is favorable for both binding types, but enhances the strength of coordinate bonding more significantly than the strength of H-bonding.

Picking on Carbonate: Kinetic Selectivity in the Encapsulation of Anions

Supramolecular hosts bind to inorganic anions at a fast rate and select them in proportion with thermodynamic stability of the corresponding [anion⊂host] complexes, forming in a reversible manner. In this study, we describe the action of hexapodal capsule 1 and its remarkable ability to select anions based on a large span of rates by which they enter this host. The thermodynamic affinity of 1 toward eighteen anions extends over eight orders of magnitude (0<K_a <10⁸  M^-1 ; ¹ H NMR spectroscopy). The capsule would retain CO₃ ^2- (K_a =10⁷  M^-1 ) for hours in the presence of eleven competing anions, including stronger binding SO₄ ^2- , HAsO₄ ^2- and HPO₄ ^2- (K_a =10⁷ -10⁸  M^-1 ). The observed selection resulted from 1 possessing narrow apertures (ca. 3×6 Å) comparable in size to anions (d=3.5-7.1 Å) slowing down the encapsulation to last from seconds to days. The unorthodox mode of action of 1 sets the stage for creating hosts that pick anions by their ability to access the host.

Bis[squaramido]ferrocenes as electrochemical sulfate receptors

The bis[squaramido]ferrocene scaffold is introduced and shown to selectively bind and electrochemically report sulfate in competitive water/DMSO mixtures.

Photoresponsive macrocycles for selective binding and release of sulfate

A series of new photoresponsive macrocyclic anion receptors were synthesized via integration of an azobenzene unit and multiple anion binding sites. They exhibited highly selective binding to dianionic sulfate over other tested anions and the reversible release of sulfate could be triggered by visible light as inferred from mass spectroscopy, crystallographical analysis, NMR spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations.

Fluorescence Recognition of Anions Using a Heteroditopic Receptor: Homogenous and Two-Phase Sensing

In contrast to monotopic receptor 3, the anthracene functionalized squaramide dual-host receptor 1 is capable of selectively extracting sulfate salts, as was evidenced unambiguously by DOSY, mass spectrometry, fluorescent and ion chromatography measurements. The receptors were investigated in terms of anion and ion pair binding using the UV-vis and 1H NMR titrations method in acetonitrile. The reference anion receptor 3, lacking a crown ether unit, was found to lose the enhancement in anion binding induced by the presence of cations. Besides the ability to bind anions in an enhanced manner exhibited by ion pair receptors 2 and 4, changing the 1-aminoanthracene substituent resulted in their exhibiting a lower anion affinity than receptor 1. By using receptor 1 and adjusting the water content in organic phase it was possible to selectively detect sulfates both by "turn-off" and "turn-on" fluorescence, and to do so homogenously and under interfacial conditions. Such properties of receptor 1 have allowed the development of a new type of sensor capable of recognizing and extracting potassium sulfate from the aqueous medium across a phase boundary, resulting in an appropriate fluorescent response in the organic solution.

Mesoporous Poly(melamine-co-formaldehyde) Particles for Efficient and Selective Phosphate and Sulfate Removal

Due to the existence-threatening risk to aquatic life and entire ecosystems, the removal of oxyanions such as sulfate and phosphate from anthropogenic wastewaters, such as municipal effluents and acid mine drainage, is inevitable. Furthermore, phosphorus is an indispensable resource for worldwide plant fertilization, which cannot be replaced by any other substance. This raises phosphate to one of the most important mineral resources worldwide. Thus, efficient recovery of phosphate is essential for ecosystems and the economy. To face the harsh acidic conditions, such as for acid mine drainage, an adsorber material with a high chemical resistivity is beneficial. Poly(melamine-co-formaldehyde) (PMF) sustains these conditions whilst its very high amount of nitrogen functionalities (up to 53.7 wt.%) act as efficient adsorption sides. To increase adsorption capacities, PMF was synthesized in the form of mesoporous particles using a hard-templating approach yielding specific surface areas up to 409 m2/g. Different amounts of silica nanospheres were utilized as template and evaluated for the adsorption of sulfate and phosphate ions. The adsorption isotherms were validated by the Langmuir model. Due to their properties, the PMF particles possessed outperforming maximum adsorption capacities of 341 and 251 mg/g for phosphate and sulfate, respectively. Furthermore, selective adsorption of sulfate from mixed solutions of phosphate and sulfate was found for silica/PMF hybrid particles.

Novel Fluorescence Guanidine Molecules for Selective Sulfate Anion Detection in Water Complex Samples over a Wide pH Range

Quantitative analysis of sulfate anions in water still remains an important challenge for the society. Among all the methodologies, the most successful one is based on optical supramolecular receptors because the presence of small concentrations of sulfate anion modifies the photophysical properties of the receptor. In this case, fluorescence anion sensors have been designed by the incorporation of guanidine motifs into fluorenyl cores. The photophysical behaviors of the new mono- (M) and bis-guanidine (B) derivatives were studied through pH dependence, solvent effects, and ion sensing on steady-state spectra and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. In more detail, the results demonstrate that M is a highly selective and sensitive sulfate ion receptor in real water samples and, even more importantly, its function remains unchanged at different ranges of pH. The reason behind this resides on the fluorescence quenching produced by an internal charge-transfer process when the sulfate anion is complexed with M. It is worth noting that the global and partial affinity constants (10¹⁰ M^-2 and 10⁵ M^-1, respectively) of complex formation are far above from the current sulfate sensors in water (10⁴ M^-1) which give an LOD of 0.10 μM in water with an analytical range of 2.5-10 μM. On the other hand, although it would seem, at first sight, that the B derivate will be the most promising one, the possibility of having two simultaneous protonation states reduces the complex formation and, therefore, its sensitivity to sulfate anions. The results presented here offer the possibility of using a new molecule in water environments, which opens the door to infinite applications such as the detection of trace amounts of sulfate ions in food or water.

Selective binding of anions by rigidified nanojars: sulfate vs. carbonate

Selective binding and transport of highly hydrophilic anions is ubiquitous in nature, as anion binding proteins can differentiate between similar anions with over a million-fold efficiency. While comparable selectivity has occasionally been achieved for certain anions using small, artificial receptors, the selective binding of certain anions, such as sulfate in the presence of carbonate, remains a very challenging task. Nanojars of the formula [anion⊂{Cu(OH)(pz)}_n]^2- (pz = pyrazolate; n = 27-33) are totally selective for either CO₃^2- or SO₄^2- over anions such as NO₃^-, ClO₄^-, BF₄^-, Cl^-, Br^- and I^-, but cannot differentiate between the two. We hypothesized that rigidification of the nanojar outer shell by tethering pairs of pyrazole moieties together will restrict the possible orientations of the OH hydrogen-bond donor groups in the anion-binding cavity of nanojars, similarly to anion-binding proteins, and will lead to selectivity. Indeed, by using either homoleptic or heteroleptic nanojars of the general formula [anion⊂Cu_n(OH)_n(L2-L6)_y(pz)_n-2y]^2- (n = 26-31) based on a series of homologous ligands HpzCH₂(CH₂)_xCH₂pzH (x = 0-4; H₂L2-H₂L6), selectivity for carbonate (with L2 and with L4-L6/pz mixtures) or for sulfate (with L3) has been achieved. The synthesis of new ligands H₂L3, H₂L4 and H₂L5, X-ray crystal structures of H₂L4 and the tetrahydropyranyl-protected derivatives (THP)₂L4 and (THP)₂L5, synthesis and characterization by electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) of carbonate- and sulfate-nanojars derived from ligands H₂L2-H₂L6, as well as detailed selectivity studies for CO₃^2-vs. SO₄^2- using these novel nanojars are presented.

Influence of Triazole Substituents of Bis-Heteroleptic Ru(II) Probes toward Selective Sensing of Dihydrogen Phosphate

A series of seven new bis-heteroleptic Ru(II) probes (1[PF₆]₂-7[PF₆]₂) along with two previously reported probes (8[PF₆]₂ and 9[PF₆]₂) containing a similar anion binding triazole unit (hydrogen bond donor) functionalized with various substituents are employed in a detailed comparative investigation for the development of superior selective probes for H₂PO₄^-. Various solution- and solid-state studies, such as ¹H-DOSY NMR, dynamic light scattering (DLS), single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), have established that the selective sensing of H₂PO₄^- by this series of probes is primarily due to supramolecular aggregation driven enhancement of ³MLCT emission. Intestingly, 1[PF₆]₂ and 7[PF₆]₂, having an electron-deficient (π-acidic) aromatic pentafluorophenyl substituent are found to be superior probes for H₂PO₄^- in comparison to the other aryl- and polyaromatic-substituted analogues (2[PF₆]₂-6[PF₆]₂, 8[PF₆]₂, and 9[PF₆]₂), in terms of a higher enhancement of the ³MLCT emission band, a greater binding constant, and a lower detection limit. The superiority of 1[PF₆]₂ and 7[PF₆]₂ could be due to better supramolecular aggregation properties in the cases of pentafluorophenyl analogues via both hydrogen bonding and anion-fluorine/anion-π noncovalent interactions.

Revisiting salicylidene-based anion receptors

Several salicylidene-based colorimetric and fluorimetric anion sensors are known in the literature. However, our ¹H-NMR experimental results (in DMSO-d₆) showed hydrolysis of imine (–N Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> CH–) bonds in salicylidene-based receptors (SL, CL1 and CL2) in the presence of quaternary ammonium salts (n-Bu₄N⁺) of halides (Cl⁻ and Br⁻) and oxo-anions (H₂PO₄⁻, HSO₄⁻ and CH₃COO⁻). The mono-salicylidene compound CL1 showed the most extensive –NCH– bond hydrolysis in the presence of anions. In contrast, the di-salicylidene compound CL2 and the tris-salicylidene compound SL showed comparatively slow hydrolysis of –NCH– bonds in the presence of anions. Anion-induced imine bond cleavage in salicylidene compounds could easily be detected in ¹H-NMR due to the appearance of the salicylaldehyde –CHO peak at 10.3 ppm which eventually became more intense over time, and the –NCH– peak at 8.9–9.0 ppm became considerably weaker. Furthermore, the formation of the salicylidene O–H⋯X⁻ (X⁻ = Cl⁻/Br⁻) hydrogen-bonded complex, peak broadening due to proton-exchange processes and keto–enol tautomerism have also been clearly observed in the ¹H-NMR experiments. Control ¹H-NMR experiments revealed that the presence of moisture in the organic solvents could result in gradual hydrolysis of the salicylidene compounds, and the rate of hydrolysis has further been enhanced significantly in the presence of an anion. Based on ¹H-NMR results, we have proposed a general mechanism for the anion-induced hydrolysis of imine bonds in salicylidene-based receptors.

Salicylidene Schiff bases undergo imine bond hydrolysis in the presence of halides and oxo-anions in aprotic media, raising fundamental questions on the applicability of salicylidene-based receptors as anion sensors.

This review illustrates a variety of luminescent chemosensors for the selective detection of assorted phosphates via the “Turn-On” emission mechanism with focus on their design aspects, chemical structures and sensing mechanism.

A critical review on recent developments in MOF adsorbents for the elimination of toxic heavy metals from aqueous solutions

Effective and substantial remediation of contaminants especially heavy metals from water is still a big challenge in terms of both environmental and biological perspectives because of their adverse effects on the human health. Many techniques including adsorption, ion exchange, co-precipitation, chemical reduction, ultrafiltration, etc. are reported for eliminating heavy metal ions from the water. However, adsorption has preferred because of its simple and easy handlings. Several types of adsorbents are observed and documented well for the purpose. Recently, highly porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were developed by incorporating metals and organic ligands together and claimed as potent adsorbents for the remediation of highly toxic heavy metals from the aqueous solutions due to their unique features like greater surface area, high chemical stability, green and reuse material, etc. In this review, the authors discussed systematically some recent developments about secure MOFs to eliminate the toxic metals such as arsenic (both arsenite and arsenate), chromium(VI), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb). MOFs are observed as the most efficient adsorbents with greater selectivity as well as high adsorption capacity for metallic contamination. Graphical abstract.

Metal-organic frameworks based adsorbents: A review from removal perspective of various environmental contaminants from wastewater

Rapidly increasing water contamination has turned into a major threat globally. The pollutants such as organic and inorganic compounds, heavy metals, and biological organisms are among the major contributor to water pollution. Therefore, the removal of these contaminants has attracted the researchers a lot. Various methodologies are being carried out for the purpose. Among them, the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with several active sites and tailorable porous architectures as adsorbents or photocatalytic removal agents is a fast-growing class of coordination chemistry to remove these agents from water. To date, numerous approaches dealing with water treatment including conservative and advanced technologies have been presented. This article thoroughly reviews the application of MOFs toward how to remove the toxic agents from water. The leading objective is to present up-to-date information and references regarding MOFs based materials toward wastewater treatment applications.

Cooperative Transport and Selective Extraction of Sulfates by a Squaramide-Based Ion Pair Receptor: A Case of Adaptable Selectivity

The use of a squaramide-based ion pair receptor offers a solution to the very challenging problem of extraction and transport of extremely hydrated sulfate salt. Herein we demonstrate for the first time that a neutral receptor is able not only to selectively extract but also to transport sulfates in the form of an alkali metal salt across membranes and to do so in a cooperative manner while overcoming the Hofmeister bias. This was made possible by an enhancement in anion binding promoted by cation assistance and by diversifying the stoichiometry of receptor complexes with sulfates and other ions. The existence of a peculiar 4:1 complex of receptor 2 with sulfates in solution was confirmed by UV-vis and 1H NMR titration experiments, DOSY and DLS measurements, and supported by solid-state X-ray measurements. By varying the separation technique and experimental conditions, it was possible to switch the depletion of the aqueous layer into extremely hydrophilic or less lipophilic salts, thus obtaining the desired selectivity.

Rapid Colorimetric Screening of Elevated Phosphate in Urine: A Charge-Transfer Interaction

A charge-transfer (CT) interaction between 1,3,5-trinitro-2,4-dimethylbenzene (TNX) and anionic phosphate is evaluated, yielding a high band electronic transfer interaction that can be observed as a distinct color change when phosphate is present in solution. The induced interaction was studied using ¹H NMR, UV-visible, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. The stoichiometric determination of the interaction was divined by means of continuous variation, applying the Schaeppi-Treadwell method to calculate the binding constant (k). Furthermore, the effect of the polarity of solvents toward the generation of the CT interaction was examined, with multiple solvents considered. Complex deconstruction studies were undertaken, examining the effects of water on complex destruction and understanding the volumes needed to hinder the CT interaction potency. Specificity and selectivity of the CT interaction were also studied against other biologically relevant species (CH₃CH₂OH, Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺, Cl^-, HCO₃ ^-, F^-, CH₃COO^-, and SO₄ ^2-), assessing the capabilities of the assay to differentiate anionic species and counter cations that could act as interferences. The role of TNX concentration in CT formation was also analyzed, aiming to optimize the phosphate-sensing assay and improve its limit of detection. The sensing platform was subsequently used to study phosphate concentrations in urine samples to further understand its potential application in biomedical research. To validate the developed technique, urine samples were analyzed for their phosphate content with both the developed sensor and a validated vanadate-molybdate reagent. The results indicate that the sensing method is capable of accurately reporting elevated phosphate levels in urine samples in a rapid and sensitive manner, illustrating that the colorimetric test could be used as a prescreening test for conditions such as hyperphosphatemia or chronic kidney disease.

Benzenebistriazole-strapped calix[4]pyrrole: a neutral anion receptor with CH and NH donor groups that exhibits high sulfate binding affinity and selectivity in aqueous solutions

A calix[4]pyrrole strapped by benzenebistriazole has been prepared as an artificial anion binding receptor. This neutral anion receptor shows high sulfate binding affinity and selectivity in an aqueous solution. In solid state, the receptor binds the sulfate anion in a chair-like 3D cavity via multiple N-H and C-H hydrogen bonds.

An accurate single descriptor for ion-π interactions

Non-covalent interactions between ions and π systems play an important role in molecular recognition, catalysis and biology. To guide the screen and design for artificial hosts, catalysts and drug delivery, understanding the physical nature of ion-π complexes via descriptors is indispensable. However, even with multiple descriptors that contain the leading term of electrostatic and polarized interactions, the quantitative description for the binding energies (BEs) of ion-π complexes is still lacking because of the intrinsic shortcomings of the commonly used descriptors. Here, we have shown that the impartment of orbital details into the electrostatic energy (coined as OEE) makes an excellent single descriptor for BEs of not only spherical, but also multiply-shaped, ion-π systems, highlighting the importance of an accurate description of the electrostatic interactions. Our results have further demonstrated that OEEs from a low-level method could be calibrated to BEs from a high-level method, offering a powerful practical strategy for an accurate prediction of a set of ion-π interactions.

A supramolecule based fluorescence turn-on and ratiometric sensor for ATP in aqueous solution

Considering the biological relevance of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) as an "energy currency" in all organisms and significance of its detection in various diseased conditions, enormous efforts have been made to develop selective and sensitive fluorescent sensors for the detection of ATP. However, these developed sensor probes frequently involve technically challenging and time-consuming synthetic protocols for the production of sensor molecules and often suffer from poor solubility in aqueous medium. Another major disadvantage of these developed sensor systems is their single wavelength based operation which makes their performance susceptible to minute changes in experimental conditions. Herein, we report a fluorescence turn-on ratiometric sensor for the detection of ATP which operates by the dissociation of Thioflavin-T-sulphated-β-cyclodextrin supramolecular assembly by Zn²⁺ followed by ATP induced reassociation of the same. This modulation of the monomer/aggregate equilibrium of the supramolecular assembly followed by subsequent interactions with Zn²⁺ and ATP acts as an optimal scheme for the ratiometric detection of ATP. Overall this supramolecular ensemble based sensing platform provides a simple, sensitive, selective and label free detection approach for ATP in aqueous solution. Importantly, our sensor platform responds to ATP in the biologically complex media of serum samples suggesting its potential for possible applications in real-life scenarios.

Selective Phosphate Removal from Water and Wastewater using Sorption: Process Fundamentals and Removal Mechanisms

Eutrophication of water bodies is a serious and widespread environmental problem. Achieving low levels of phosphate concentration to prevent eutrophication is one of the important goals of the wastewater engineering and surface water management. Meeting the increasingly stringent standards is feasible in using a phosphate-selective sorption system. This critical review discusses the most fundamental aspects of selective phosphate removal processes and highlights gains from the latest developments of phosphate-selective sorbents. Selective sorption of phosphate over other competing anions can be achieved based on their differences in acid-base properties, geometric shapes, and metal complexing abilities. Correspondingly, interaction mechanisms between the phosphate and sorbent are categorized as hydrogen bonding, shape complementarity, and inner-sphere complexation, and their representative sorbents are organic-functionalized materials, molecularly imprinted polymers, and metal-based materials, respectively. Dominating factors affecting the phosphate sorption performance of these sorbents are critically examined, along with a discussion of some overlooked facts regarding the development of high-performance sorbents for selective phosphate removal from water and wastewater.

Ion-pair induced supramolecular assembly formation for selective extraction and sensing of potassium sulfate

Selective extraction of sulfates in the form of alkali metal salts using charge-neutral molecular receptors is one of the holy grails of supramolecular chemistry. Herein we describe, for the first time, a squaramide-based ion pair receptor equipped with a crown ether site that is able to extract potassium sulfate from the aqueous to the organic phase (an analogous monotopic anion receptor lacking the crown ether unit lacks this ability). 1H NMR, UV-vis, DOSY-NMR, DLS, and MS experiments and the solid-state single crystal structure provided evidence of the formation of a supramolecular core-shell like assembly upon interaction of the receptor with potassium sulfate. The presence of monovalent potassium salts, in contrast, promoted the formation of simple 1 : 1 complexes. Unlike the 4 : 1 assembly, the 1 : 1 complexes are poorly soluble in organic media. This feature was utilized to overcome the Hofmeister bias and allow for selective extraction of extremely hydrophilic sulfates over lipophilic nitrate anions, which was unambiguously proved by quantitative AES and ion chromatography measurements. A simple modification of the receptor structure led to a "naked eye" optical sensor able to selectively detect sulfates under both SLE and LLE conditions.
