Abstract
Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are extensively investigated as catalyst materials for a wide range of electrochemical applications due to their high surface area and versatile electronic and chemical properties. Bulk TMDCs are van der Waals solids that possess strong in-plane bonding and weak inter-layer interactions. In the few-layer 2D TMDCs, several polymorphic structures have been reported as each individual layer can either retain octahedral or trigonal prismatic coordination. Among them, 1T (tetragonal), 2H (hexagonal) and 3R (rhombohedral) phases are very common. These polymorphs can display discrepancies in their catalytic activity as their electronic structure diverges due to different d orbital filling states. The broken inversion symmetry and large exposed edge sites of some of the 3R-phase TMDCS such as MoS2, NbS2 and TaS2 appear to be advantageous for electrocatalytic water reduction and battery applications. We describe recent studies in phase engineering of 2D TMDCs, particularly aiming at the 3R polytype and their electrocatalytic properties. Redox ability primarily depends on a distinct polymorphic phase in which TMDCs are isolated, and hence, with rich polymorphic structures being reported, numerous new catalytic applications can be realized. Phase conversion from 2H to 3R phase in some TMDCs enhances structural integrity and establishes robustness under harsh chemical conditions.

Abstract
Multicentre two-electron (mc/2e or 'pancake bonding') bonding between 7,7,8,8-tetra-cyano-quinodi-methane (TCNQ) radical anions was studied on its 14 novel salts with planar organic cations. The formal charges of the TCNQδ- moieties are -1/2 and -2/3, and they form mc/2e bonded dimers, trimers and tetramers which are further stacked into extended arrays. Multicentre bonding within these oligomers is characterized by short interplanar separations of 2.9-3.2 Å; distances between the oligomers are larger, typically >3.3 Å. The stacks are laterally connected by C-H⋯N hydrogen bonding, forming 2D arrays. The nature of mc/2e bonding is characterized by structural, magnetic and electrical data. The compounds are found to be semiconductors, and high conductivity [10-2 (Ω cm)-1] correlates with short interplanar distances between pancake-bonded oligomers.

Abstract
This work explores the relationship between the magnetic properties of salts based on [Ni(dmit)2]- radicals and different arrangements that these radicals can adopt in the crystals, induced by the packing constrains imposed by the counterions. Our analysis is based on difference dedicated configuration interaction calculations on models containing two neighbouring [Ni(dmit)2]- units with different interaction patterns. The amplitude and sign of these through-space interactions can be rationalized on the basis of a valence-only model that essentially analyzes the effective interactions between the atoms carrying the electronic density of singly occupied orbitals (SOMOs). Despite the simplicity of the model, it provides simple rules to predict the nature and the expected amplitude (strong/medium/weak) of the leading interactions in systems based on these [Ni(dmit)2]- radicals.

Abstract
The smart utilization of photons is paid global attention from the viewpoint of renewable energy and information technology. However, it is still impossible to store photons as batteries and condensers do for electrons. All the present technologies utilize (the energy of) photons in situ, such as solar panels, or in spontaneous relaxation processes, such as photoluminescence. If we can store the energy of photons over an arbitrary period and utilize them on demand, not only we will make an innovative progress in energy management, but we will also be able to replace a part of electrons by photons in the information technology for more efficient performance. In this article, we review a prototype of such a material including the current status of related research as well as where we are heading for.

Abstract
A series of two-dimensional (2D)-layered coordination polymers (CPs) based on the heterosubstituted anilate ligand ClCNAn2- derived from 3-chloro-6-cyano-2,5-dihydroxybenzoquinone and DyIII are reported. By changes in the synthetic methods (layering technique, solvothermal or conventional one-pot reactions) and conditions (solvent, concentration, etc.), different types of 2D extended networks could be prepared and structurally characterized. Compounds 1 and 1', two polymorphs with the formula [Dy2(ClCNAn)3(DMSO)6]n·(H2O)x [x = 7 (1), 0 (1')], were prepared by a conventional one-pot reaction and recrystallized at different concentrations. Compound 2, formulated as [Dy2(ClCNAn)3(DMF)6]n, was prepared by a layering technique, while compound 3, formulated as {(Me2NH2)2[Dy2(ClCNAn)4(H2O)2]·(DMF)2·(H2O)5}n, was obtained by a solvothermal method. Compounds 1 and 2 are neutral 2D CPs of the ClCNAn2- ligand and DyIII ions, while 3 presents 2D anionic layers of [Dy2(ClCNAn)4(H2O)2]2- alternating with cationic layers of Me2NH2+ ions. These compounds show very diverse networks, with compound 1 forming 2D (8,3) and (4,3) topology with eight- and four-membered rings with square cavities, 1' and 2, respectively, a 2D (6,3) topology with six-membered rings (a rectangular cavity for 1' and a regular hexagonal cavity for 2), and 3 a 2D (4,4) topology with distorted square cavities. In this respect, 1 and 1' represent the first examples of polymorphism in the family of anilate-based CPs. Thermal analysis measurements (differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry) show an exothermic polymorphic transformation from the kinetically stable 1' phase to the thermodynamically stable phase 1. The magnetic behavior of 1-3 very likely indicates depopulation of the mJ levels, while the presence of weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the DyIII centers mediated by the anilate bridge cannot be excluded.

Abstract
The Au(iii)-complex anions in a newly synthesised compound BPY[Au(dmit)2]2 (BPY = N,N'-ethylene-2,2'-bipyridinium, dmit = 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) reversibly exhibit a molecular distortion in the solid state under UV-radiation. The photoexcited state is maintained for a week at 298 K, during which time molecules relax to their original structures and energy is gradually released as heat without decomposition or light emission. Most Au atoms adopt square planar (SP) coordination geometries, but some anions have unusual non-planar (NP) coordination geometries that produce disorder at the Au sites. The total (Gibbs) energy of the system depends on the proportion of Au atoms of NP geometry, which is directly determined from the occupancy (Occ (%)) by X-ray diffractometry. Due to phase transition, Occ substantially changes at a critical temperature (TC) of ∼280 K without other structural changes; however it remains almost constant in each phase. In addition, due to UV-promoted charge-transfer transitions between BPY and Au(dmit)2, Occ can be controlled by UV irradiation (∼250-450 nm). The UV-excited states have unprecedentedly long relaxation times (t1/2 > 36 h at 298 K), which is attributed to the close connection between the degrees of freedom on charge, spin, and molecular structures.

Abstract
The first systematic study of π interactions between non-aromatic rings, based on the authors' own results from an experimental X-ray charge-density analysis assisted by quantum chemical calculations, is presented. The landmark (non-aromatic) examples include quinoid rings, planar radicals and metal-chelate rings. The results can be summarized as: (i) non-aromatic planar polyenic rings can be stacked, (ii) interactions are more pronounced between systems or rings with little or no π-electron delocalization (e.g. quinones) than those involving delocalized systems (e.g. aromatics), and (iii) the main component of the interaction is electrostatic/multipolar between closed-shell rings, whereas (iv) interactions between radicals involve a significant covalent contribution (multicentric bonding). Thus, stacking covers a wide range of interactions and energies, ranging from weak dispersion to unlocalized two-electron multicentric covalent bonding ('pancake bonding'), allowing a face-to-face stacking arrangement in some chemical species (quinone anions). The predominant interaction in a particular stacked system modulates the physical properties and defines a strategy for crystal engineering of functional materials.

Abstract
A simple change of one chloro substituent on the chloranilate ligand with a cyano group dramatically affects the electronic properties of the anilate moiety inducing unprecedented luminescence properties in the class of anilate-based ligands and their metal complexes. Here we report on the optimized synthesis and full characterization, including photoluminescence, of the chlorocyananilate ligand (ClCNAn(2-)) (dianion of the 3-chloro-6-cyano-2,5-dihydroxybenzoquinone, H2ClCNC6O4), a unique example of a heterosubstituted anilate ligand whose electronic properties, optical properties and coordination chemistry have never been investigated to date, even though it has been known since 1966. The synthesis and full characterization of its tris-chelated metal complexes with Cr(iii), Fe(iii), and Al(iii) metal ions are also described herein. These complexes, formulated as [A]3[M(III)(ClCNAn)3] (A = (n-Bu)4N(+) or Ph4P(+); M(III) = Cr (), Fe (), Al ()), are isostructural. While and are potential molecular building blocks for the preparation of molecule-based magnets or paramagnetic conducting organic-inorganic hybrid systems, , instead, where the coordinated Al(iii) metal ions retain the luminescence of the ligand, represents a unique building block to achieve heterobimetallic assemblies showing emissive properties under visible light irradiation.

Abstract
The reaction of 1,2,4-triazole and NaF with M(ox) (M = transition-metal dication; ox = oxalate dianion) under hydrothermal conditions has led to the isolation of a variety of hybrid organic-inorganic coordination polymers. Four structurally different 3D networks were obtained, depending on the transition metal, with stoichiometry [M2(H2O)(μ2-ox)][M2(μ3-trz)6] [M = Fe (1), Co (2), Ni (3)], [Zn2(H2O)(μ3-trz)2(μ2-ox)] (4), [Mn3(μ3-trz)2(μ6-ox)(μ3-F)2] (5), and [Fe3(μ3-trz)2(μ6-ox)(μ2-F)2] (6). In all cases, the magnetic behavior is dominated by antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between paramagnetic centers. Remarkably, 5 and 6 present a novel magnetic connectivity around the oxalate anion: a μ6-bridging mode. This magnetic geometry promotes multiple triangular arrangements among antiferromagnetically coupled spin carriers, resulting in a complex magnetic network because of the presence of competing interactions. These materials exhibit spontaneous magnetization below 9 and 66 K, respectively.

Abstract
The distribution of distances from atoms of a particular element E to a probe atom X (oxygen in most cases), both bonded and intermolecular non-bonded contacts, has been analyzed. In general, the distribution is characterized by a maximum at short E···X distances corresponding to chemical bonds, followed by a range of unpopulated distances--the van der Waals gap--and a second maximum at longer distances--the van der Waals peak--superimposed on a random distribution function that roughly follows a d(3) dependence. The analysis of more than five million interatomic "non-bonded" distances has led to the proposal of a consistent set of van der Waals radii for most naturally occurring elements, and its applicability to other element pairs has been tested for a set of more than three million data, all of them compared to over one million bond distances.

Abstract
Square planar complexes of the type Ni(L(1))(2), Ni(L(2))(2), Cu(L(1))(2), and Cu(L(2))(2), where L(1)H = 2-hydroxy-5-t-octylacetophenone oxime and L(2)H = 2-hydroxy-5-n-propylacetophenone oxime, have been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, UV/vis spectroscopy, field-effect-transistor measurements, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations, and, in the case of the paramagnetic species, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and magnetic susceptibility. Variation of alkyl groups on the ligand from t-octyl to n-propyl enabled electronic isolation of the complexes in the crystal structures of M(L(1))(2) contrasting with π-stacking interactions for M(L(2))(2) (M = Ni, Cu). This was evidenced by a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chain for Cu(L(2))(2) but ideal paramagnetic behavior for Cu(L(1))(2) down to 1.8 K. Despite isostructural single crystal structures for M(L(2))(2), thin-film X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed different morphologies depending on the metal and the deposition method (vapor or solution). The Cu complexes displayed limited electronic interaction between the central metal and the delocalized ligands, with more mixing in the case of Ni(II), as shown by electrochemistry and UV/vis spectroscopy. The complexes M(L(2))(2) showed poor charge transport in a field-effect transistor (FET) device despite the ability to form π-stacking structures, and this provides design insights for metal complexes to be used in conductive thin-film devices.

Abstract
The syntheses, crystal structures, and properties of three new coordination complexes [Bu4N][MIII(btdt)2] [M = Cu (1), Au (2)] and [Bu4N]2[PtII(btdt)2] (3) ({btdt}2– = 2,1,3-benzenethiadiazole-5,6-dithiolate) are described. Compounds 1–3 crystallize in a triclinic P-1, and monoclinic P2(1)/c and C2/c space groups, respectively. The {MS4} chromophore lies in almost a square-planar coordination environment in complex 1, but has a slightly distorted square-planar geometry around the central metal ion in compounds 2 and 3. Interactions in the solid state have been studied by intermolecular contacts, in particular, compounds 2 and 3 have been characterized by S⋅⋅⋅N and S⋅⋅⋅S non-covalent interactions among dithiolate complexes, resulting in two- and one-dimensional supramolecular motifs, respectively. Complexes 1–3 show broad absorption bands in the visible region, with that of 3 being sensitive to solvent polarity. Complex 1 exhibits a very low reduction potential for a CuIII-coordination complex, while the PtII complex 3 shows two irreversible oxidative responses at 0.45 V and 0.74 V versus Ag/AgCl, respectively.
