Abstract
We report a step-economic strategy for the direct synthesis of spiro polycyclic N-heterocycles and indolecarbazole-fused naphthoquinones by merging oxidative coupling and cascade palladium-catalyzed intramolecular oxidative cyclization. In the protocol, bi-indolylnaphthoquinones were first synthesized by oxidative coupling of indoles and naphthoquinones. Subsequent cascade palladium-catalyzed intramolecular oxidative cyclization of bi-indolylnaphthoquinones gave spiro polycyclic N-heterocycles and indolecarbazoles. The intramolecular oxidative cyclization approach could also be realized by the presence or absence of iron catalysts under standard conditions. This protocol is featured with moderate to excellent yields, a wide substrate scope, and divergent structures of products.

Abstract
Many efforts have been made in the last few decades to selectively transport antitumor agents to their potential target sites with the aim to improve efficacy and selectivity. Indeed, this aspect could greatly improve the beneficial effects of a specific anticancer agent especially in the case of orphan tumors like the triple negative breast cancer. A possible strategy relies on utilizing a protective leaving group like alizarin as the Pt(II) ligand to reduce the deactivation processes of the pharmacophore enacted by Pt resistant cancer cells. In this study a new series of neutral mixed-ligand Pt(II) complexes bearing alizarin and a variety of diamine ligands were synthesized and spectroscopically characterized by FT-IR, NMR and UV-Vis analyses. Three Pt(II) compounds, i.e., 2b, 6b and 7b, emerging as different both in terms of structural properties and cytotoxic effects (not effective, 10.49 ± 1.21 μM and 24.5 ± 1.5 μM, respectively), were chosen for a deeper investigation of the ability of alizarin to work as a selective carrier. The study comprises the in vitro cytotoxicity evaluation against triple negative breast cancer cell lines and ESI-MS interaction studies relative to the reaction of the selected Pt(II) complexes with model proteins and DNA fragments, mimicking potential biological targets. The results allow us to suggest the use of complex 6b as a prospective anticancer agent worthy of further investigations.

Abstract
The formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds in anthraquinones makes them inert to photoinduced reactions; therefore, it is a great challenge to phototransform these compounds. Herein, we reported a formal visible-light-induced [4 + 2] cycloaddition of both 1-hydroxyanthraquinones and 1-aminoanthraquinones with olefins under external photocatalyst-free conditions with high regioselectivity. More than 60 substrates are disclosed, demonstrating the reliability of this protocol to construct diverse functionalized anthraquinone derivatives.

Abstract
A lariat anthraquinone macrocycle functionalized with catechol (H2L) was synthesized via the Mannich reaction. The Mannich base H2L can be partially decomposed into L1·3H2O and HL1·NO3·2H2O in the presence of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide/Al(NO3)3·9H2O in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Free L1·3H2O is essentially coplanar, while protonated HL1·NO3·2H2O is highly distorted. Dark-green FeCl3·H2L·2H2O powder and Fe2(HL)2Cl4 crystal can be isolated from ethanol (C2H5OH) in high/low H2L concentration. Anthraquinone in H2L is essentially coplanar but distorted in Fe2(HL)2Cl4. The Fe(III) ion in Fe2(HL)2Cl4 adopts a less common five-coordination with three catecholate O and two Cl atoms in the dimer. The distortion of inbound C═O is much higher than that of outbound C═O in anthraquinone in all of these compounds. H2L responds to chlorides of Li+, Na+, K+, Cs+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+, Fe3+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Al3+ in a DMSO solution, which can be observed by differential pulse voltammetry, UV-vis, and 1H NMR. All of these metal ions shift Ep of anthraquinone to positive, especially the second reduction peak of anthraquinone. Fe3+, Zn2+, and Al3+ change the reduction of catechol fundamentally. H2L (0.50 mM) shows a chromogenic response to FeCl3 and Fe(NO3)3 to form uncommon 2:1 and 3:2 (H2L/Fe) complexes, both peaking at 748 nm in DMSO. In the presence of 2 equiv of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), the 748 nm absorbance shifts to 777 nm, identical with Fe2(HL)2Cl4 in DMSO. Different from the fast reaction between H2L and FeCl3, Fe(NO3)3 reacts with H2L rather slowly in DMSO. Catechol can coordinate to FeCl3 without any deprotonation in C2H5OH and DMSO. H2L also shows a chromogenic response to fluorides and hydroxides, which peak at 670 and 684 nm, respectively, in DMSO. The binding ratio between H2L and F-/OH- is 1:2. In a higher concentration of hydroxides, a 684 nm greenish-blue 1:2 complex forms immediately, which gradually transforms to a red complex and peaks at ∼530 nm in minutes at room temperature. No color change can be observed in an C2H5OH solution in the presence of OH-.

Abstract
New gold and lipoic based nanocarriers for the delivery of platinum(ii) and platinum(iv) drugs are developed, which allow enhanced loading of the drug on the surface of the nanocarriers and release in a pH-dependent fashion, with superior release at lower pHs which are associated with many tumours. The conjugate nanoparticles and their conjugates enter cells rapidly (within 3 hours). They tend to cluster in vesicles and are also observed by light and electron microscopies in the cytoplasm, endoplasmic reticulum and nucleus. We further incorporate aminoanthraquinone units that are both fluorophores and DNA intercalators. This results in nanocarriers that after drug release will remain surface decorated with DNA-binders challenging the conventional design of the nanocarrier as an inert component. The outcome is nanocarriers that themselves have distinctive, remarkable and unusual DNA binding properties being able to bind and wrap DNA (despite their anionic charge) and provide enhanced cytotoxic activity beyond that conferred by the platinum agents they release. DNA coiling is usually associated with polycations which can disrupt cell membranes; anionic nanoparticles that can cause novel and dramatic effects on DNA may have fascinating potential for new approaches to in-cell nucleic acid recognition. Our findings have implications for the understanding and interpretation of the biological activities of nanoparticles used to deliver other DNA-binding drugs including clinical drug doxorubicin and its formulations.

Abstract
The combination of molecular sensors and plasmonic materials is emerging as one of the most promising approaches for ultrasensitive SERS-based detection of metal ions in complex fluids. However, only a very small fraction of the large pool of potential chemosensors described in classical analytical chemistry has been successfully implemented into viable SERS platforms for metal ion determination. This is due to the molecular restrictions that require the chemosensor to adhere onto the plasmonic surface while retaining the capability to undergo large structural alterations upon metal ion binding. In this work, we demonstrate that the structural and functional plasticity of DNA for interacting with small aromatic molecules can be exploited to this end. DNA coating of silver nanoparticles modulates the interaction of the commercially available alizarin red S (ARS) chemosensor with the nanomaterial, translating its recognition capabilities from bulk solution onto the plasmonic surface, while simultaneously directing the particle assembling into highly efficient SERS clusters. The sensing approach was successfully applied to the multiplex, quantitative determination of Al(III) and Fe(III) in tap water in the subppb level.

Abstract
Three novel fluorescent aminophosphine ligands have been synthesised that incorporate napthyl (L1), pyrenyl (L2) and anthraquinone (L3) chromophores into their structures. The ligands react with [AuCl(tht)] (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) to give neutral complexes of the form [AuCl(L1-3)]. Solid state, X-ray crystallographic data was obtained for the anthraquinone derivative, [AuCl(L3)], and showed a distorted linear coordination geometry at Au(i). The packing structure also revealed a number of intermolecular π-π interactions that involve the anthraquinone and phenyl units of the aminophosphine ligand. 31P NMR spectroscopic data revealed δP values of +42.2 (L1), +42.1 (L2) and +26.1 (L3) ppm, which shifted downfield upon coordination to Au(i) to +64.6, +64.7, and +55.8 ppm, respectively. Supporting TD-DFT studies were able to reproduce the structure and 31P NMR chemical shifts of [AuCl(L3)] as well as rationalise the HOMO-LUMO compositions. Photophysical studies showed that the appended fluorophore dominates the absorption and emission properties for the ligands and complexes, with the anthraquinone derivatives showing visible emission at ca. 570 nm which was attributed to the intramolecular charge transfer character of the phosphinoaminoanthraquinone fragment.

Abstract
An efficient and rapid method is described for the reductive Claisen rearrangement of different propargyloxyanthraquinones to anthra[1,2-b]furan-6,11-diones for first time using iron powder in a mixture of two ionic liquids, namely 1-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [Hmim]BF4 and 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [Bzmim]Cl. The present method is able to execute single or double Claisen rearrangements of 1,4- or 1,5-bispropargyloxyanthraquinones selectively, so that the desired anthra(mono)furandiones or anthra(bis)furandiones are produced, respectively, as the major product.

Abstract
Cyanide (CN̄) is one of the most toxic material to the human and environment. It is very important to develop the diagnostic tools for the detection of CN̄ ions. Moreover, detection of the ions in an aqueous medium is a challenging task as water molecules interfere with the sensing mechanism. In this context, we prepared chemical sensor, S1, having anthraquinone as a signaling unit and thiourea as a binding site. This sensor exhibited distinct visual color and spectral changes in response to CN̄ ion over other testing anions in 50% aq. DMSO solution. However, in 20% aq. DMSO solution, S1 exhibited obvious spectral and color changes in response to CN̄, fluoride (F̄), acetate (Ac̄) and benzoate (Bz̄). Another sensor, S2, having a same signaling unit with that of S1, but a different binding site of urea group. In contrast to S1, S2 exhibited obvious spectral and color changes to F̄ in 2.5% aq. DMSO solution. NMR titration results suggested that the spectral and colorimetric responses were due to the formation of host-guest complex and deprotonation events. Finally, economically viable paper-based colorimetric "test stripes" of S1 were fabricated to detect the CN̄ ions in 100% aqueous solution.
