Pore-scale imaging of displacement patterns in an altered-wettability carbonate

Insights into the Microscopic Oil-Water Flow Characteristics and Displacement Mechanisms during Waterflooding in Sandstone Reservoir Rock Based on Micro-CT Technology: A Pore-Scale Numerical Simulation Study

The low oil recovery rate observed in current oil fields is largely attributed to the presence of remaining oil trapped in the pores of porous media during waterflooding. To improve the recovery rate, it is imperative to gain an understanding of the oil-water flow characteristics and displacement mechanisms during waterflooding, as well as to elucidate the underlying mobilization mechanisms of residual oil at the pore scale. In this paper, we explore these issues in depth by numerically investigating the influence of factors such as water injection velocities, oil-water viscosity ratios, and wettability conditions on pore-scale oil-water flow characteristics and oil recovery rate. To this end, we employ a direct numerical simulation (DNS) method in conjunction with the volume of fluid (VOF) method to study the microscopic displacement mechanisms of waterflooding in a reconstructed two-dimensional digital rock core based on micro-CT technology. In addition, the particle tracing method is adopted to identify the flow path and dominant areas during waterflooding in order to mobilize the residual oil within the pores. The findings indicate that the oil-water flow characteristics in porous media are determined by the interplay between capillary and viscous forces. Furthermore, the oil recovery rate is 10.6% and 24.7% lower under strong water-wet and oil-wet conditions than that (32.36%) under intermediate wettability conditions, and the final oil recovery rate is higher under water-wet conditions than under oil-wet conditions. The seepage path and the dominant areas are directly linked to the capillarity formed during waterflooding. The findings of this study are significant in terms of enhancing the recovery rate of residual oil and provide a novel perspective for understanding the waterflooding process.

Wettability effect on oil recovery using rock-structured microfluidics

Surface wettability has a crucial impact on drop splashing, emulsion dynamics, slip flow for drag reduction, fluid-fluid displacement, and various microfluidic applications. Targeting enhanced oil recovery (EOR) applications, we experimentally investigate the effect of matrix wettability on the invasion morphology and sweep efficiency of viscous oil displaced by different aqueous floods using microfluidics, whose porous network mimics a sandstone structure. For comparison, systematic experiments of the same oil-flood pair are done in both hydrophilic and hydrophobic microfluidic chips. The results show that the hydrophilic microfluidic rock has a remarkable increase in oil recovery by a factor of ≈1.44, compared to the hydrophobic case. In addition, we observe a more pronounced lateral growth of the displacing pattern of aqueous flood for the hydrophilic surface. Finally, we quantitatively explain the increasing factor in the recovery rate and finger width for the hydrophilic vs. hydrophobic rock-liked porous networks by incorporating the contact angle into a scaling analysis.

Live imaging of micro and macro wettability variations of carbonate oil reservoirs for enhanced oil recovery and CO2 trapping/storage

Carbonate hydrocarbon reservoirs are considered as potential candidates for chemically enhanced oil recovery and for CO₂ geological storage. However, investigation of one main controlling parameter-wettability-is usually performed by conventional integral methods at the core-scale. Moreover, literature reports show that wettability distribution may vary at the micro-scale due to the chemical heterogeneity of the reservoir and residing fluids. These differences may profoundly affect the derivation of other reservoir parameters such as relative permeability and capillary pressure, thus rendering subsequent simulations inaccurate. Here we developed an innovative approach by comparing the wettability distribution on carbonates at micro and macro-scale by combining live-imaging of controlled condensation experiments and X-ray mapping with sessile drop technique. The wettability was quantified by measuring the differences in contact angles before and after aging in palmitic, stearic and naphthenic acids. Furthermore, the influence of organic acids on wettability was examined at micro-scale, which revealed wetting heterogeneity of the surface (i.e., mixed wettability), while corresponding macro-scale measurements indicated hydrophobic wetting properties. The thickness of the adsorbed acid layer was determined, and it was correlated with the wetting properties. These findings bring into question the applicability of macro-scale data in reservoir modeling for enhanced oil recovery and geological storage of greenhouse gases.

Pore-scale imaging and analysis of low salinity waterflooding in a heterogeneous carbonate rock at reservoir conditions

X-ray micro-tomography combined with a high-pressure high-temperature flow apparatus and advanced image analysis techniques were used to image and study fluid distribution, wetting states and oil recovery during low salinity waterflooding (LSW) in a complex carbonate rock at subsurface conditions. The sample, aged with crude oil, was flooded with low salinity brine with a series of increasing flow rates, eventually recovering 85% of the oil initially in place in the resolved porosity. The pore and throat occupancy analysis revealed a change in fluid distribution in the pore space for different injection rates. Low salinity brine initially invaded large pores, consistent with displacement in an oil-wet rock. However, as more brine was injected, a redistribution of fluids was observed; smaller pores and throats were invaded by brine and the displaced oil moved into larger pore elements. Furthermore, in situ contact angles and curvatures of oil–brine interfaces were measured to characterize wettability changes within the pore space and calculate capillary pressure. Contact angles, mean curvatures and capillary pressures all showed a shift from weakly oil-wet towards a mixed-wet state as more pore volumes of low salinity brine were injected into the sample. Overall, this study establishes a methodology to characterize and quantify wettability changes at the pore scale which appears to be the dominant mechanism for oil recovery by LSW.
