Enhanced aqueous solubility of naphthalene and pyrene by binary and ternary Gemini cationic and conventional nonionic surfactants

The efficiency of micellar solubilization of naphthalene from aqueous solutions using rhamnolipid as a biological surfactant according to NMR diffusometry

The micellar solubilization of naphthalene from its saturated aqueous solutions using the biosurfactant rhamnolipid was studied. Using the NMR diffusion method, selective measurements of the self-diffusion coefficients of molecules of all components of the solution-naphthalene, rhamnolipid, and water-were carried out at various rhamnolipid concentrations from 0.06 to 100 g/L. Based on the results of diffusometry, the distribution of naphthalene molecules between the states free in solution and states bound by micelles was found. With an increase in the concentration of rhamnolipids, the proportion of bound naphthalene molecules increases from 50% at CRL = 2 g/L to 100% at CRL ≥ 50 g/L. The micelle-water partition coefficient Km and the molar solubilization ratio MSR were calculated.

Effect of in situ mixed micellization of ester-functionalized gemini surfactant at different pHs on solubilization and cosolubilization of various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons of varying hydrophobicities

A pH controlled cleavability unfolds the 3-in-1 surfactant feature of an ester-bonded gemini surfactant, 2, 2'-[(oxybis (ethane-1,2-diyl))bis (oxy)]bis (N-hexadecyl-N,Ndimethyl-2-oxoethanaminium) dichloride (C16-C4O2-C16), by reinforcing in-situ mixed micellization between cleaved components at non-neutral pH (pH 3,12). The triplicity is assigned to two mixed-micelle variants at pH 3 and pH 12 besides the unhydrolyzed C16-C4O2-C16 at pH 7. The pH-controlled aggregation of such trichotomic surfactant dramatically enhances the micellar solubilization/cosolubilization of PAHs viz. naphthalene (Np), phenanthrene (Ph), pyrene (Py), perylene (Pe). The cosolubilization of binary/ternary PAH mixtures in such remarkable micellar assemblies at pH 3, 7 and 12 yields intriguing synergistic or antagonistic solubility outcomes correlated to PAH-PAH and PAH-micelle interactions. This study provides valuable insights into the potential applications of the ester-bonded gemini surfactant for the cosolubilization of undesirable hydrophobic compounds at natural sites having variable pH.

Study on the thermal washing of oily sludge used by rhamnolipid/sophorolipid binary mixed bio-surfactant systems

Demulsification and crude oil desorption are usually a necessary step for the treatment of oily sludge in the petroleum industry. In this study a binary mixed bio-surfactant (rhamnolipid / sophorolipid, RL/SL) was used to strengthen the removing oil efficiency for oily sludge by thermal washing method. Surface tension values of the single and the mixed surfactants were carried out to investigate the effect of mixing systems on reducing critical micelle concentrations (CMC) value. The models proposed by Clint, Rubingh and Gibbs et al. had been employed to interpret the formation of mixed micelles and synergism and found out in case of the mass ratios of 4:6 the synergism was the strongest in RL and SL mixed surfactant systems, which was selected as the washing agents to treat the oily sludge produced from Huabei oilfield. Through the optimization of oil washing process parameters, the oil removal rate reached the maximum value (95.66%, residual oil rate 1.98%) at the condition of heating temperature of 45 °C, detergents concentration of 500 mg/L, washing time of 3 h, liquid/solid mass ratio of 1:4, stirring speed of 300 r/min, and washing 4 times. The factors affecting the oil washing effect were analyzed from the composition and performance characteristics of oily sludge samples, washing oil system and washing process parameters. The results showed that low oil content of oily sludge, small specific surface area, strong wetting and solubilization of the oil-washing system all can increase the oil-washing effect and the washing time and temperature had a great influence on the oil-washing effect. Compared with the results of other researchers, the oil washing temperature and the concentration of oil washing agent were significantly lower and high oil removal rate and low residual oil rate were obtained in this study. It was confirmed that thermal oil washing method using RT/SL binary bio-surfactant mixing system was proved to a high-efficiency, low-consumption and wide range of applications technology.

How surfactants affect the depuration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons adsorbed on the mangrove leaf surfaces: insight from an in situ method

The effects of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate (Tween 20), and their mixtures on the depuration of anthracene (Ant) and fluoranthene (Fla) individually adsorbed on the Kandelia obovata (Ko) leaf surfaces were in situ investigated. The Ko original leaf-wax microstructures have been destroyed by SDBS, Tween 20, and their mixtures at or above their critical micelle concentration (CMC). The volatilization rate constants (k_V) of the adsorbed PAHs decreased with surfactants at or above their CMC resulting from the plasticizing effect and a decrease in the polarity of the Ko leaf-waxes induced by surfactants. Moreover, the photolysis rate constants (k_P) of the adsorbed PAHs decreased with SDBS while increased with Tween 20 and their mixtures at or above their CMC, which can be attributed to effects of surfactants on the light adsorption behavior of Ko leaf-waxes. Overall, the effects of surfactants on the depuration of the adsorbed PAHs were dependent not only on the physical-chemical properties of surfactants but also on the micro-environment of the substrates adsorbed the PAHs. These results are of great significance for further understanding the accumulation of PAHs and could expand our knowledge about the migration mechanism of PAHs from the atmosphere by mangrove leaf surface micro-zones.

Study on the treatment of oily sludge in oil fields with lipopeptide/sophorolipid complex bio-surfactant

A systematic study had been carried out to get insight into the micellar behavior of anionic lipopeptide (LT) and nonionic sophorolipid (SL) in their different mass ratio mixed state using the technique of tensiometry. The models proposed by Clint, Rubingh and Gibbs et al. had been employed to interpret the formation of mixed micelles and found out synergism. The obtained experimental critical micelle concentrations (CMC) were lower than the ideal CMCs, indicating negative deviation from ideal behavior for all multi-component mixed micelles formation. A suited binary bio-surfactant mixing system was selected as the washing agents to treat the oily sludge produced from Huabei oilfield by the thermal bio-surfactant washing method. The results showed that in case of the mass ratios of 8:2 the CMC was dramatically decreased and synergism was the strongest in LT and SL bi mixed surfactant systems. The studied binary mixed bio-surfactant system showed higher washing efficiency for oily sludge than single surfactant system. In addition, the washing power of binary mixed bio-surfactants towards oily sludge was the best at below washing conditions: (a) the concentration of the mixed system (100 mg/L), (b) temperature (55 ℃), (c) ratio of sludge/liquid (1:3), (d) washing time (3 h), and (e) stirring speed (300 rpm). Certainly, the washing abilities of the selected surfactants not only depend on their mixing ratio and washing conditions but also associate with microstructure and mineral components of oily sludge.

Encapsulation and Characterization of Nanoemulsions Based on an Anti-oxidative Polymeric Amphiphile for Topical Apigenin Delivery

Apigenin (Apig) is used as a model drug due to its many beneficial bio-activities and therapeutic potentials. Nevertheless, its poor water solubility and low storage stability have limited its application feasibility on the pharmaceutical field. To address this issue, this study developed nanoemulsions (NEs) using an anti-oxidative polymeric amphiphile, d-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate (TPGS), hydrogenated soy lecithin (HL), black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) oil, and avocado (AV) oil through pre-homogenization and ultrasonication method. Addition of TPGS (weight ratios 100 and 50% as compared to HL) into NEs effectively reduced particle size and phase transition region area of NEs with pure HL. Incorporation of Apig into NEs made particle size increase and provided a disorder effect on intraparticle molecular packing. Nevertheless, the encapsulation efficiency of NEs for Apig approached to about 99%. The chemical stability of Apig was significantly improved and its antioxidant ability was elevated by incorporation with BSFL oil and AV oil NEs, especially for NEs with single TPGS. NEs with single TPGS also exhibited the best Apig skin deposition. For future application of topical Apig delivery, NEs-gel was formed by the addition of hyaluronic acid (HA) into NEs. Their rheological characteristics were dominated by the surfactant ratios of HL to TPGS.

Performance and kinetics of benzo(a)pyrene biodegradation in contaminated water and soil and improvement of soil properties by biosurfactant amendment

As a hydrophobic pollutant, benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) is difficult to be degraded by microbes due to its poor water solubility. To improve its water solubility, this study harvested a biosurfactant from swine wastewater. The role of the biosurfactant in BaP biodegradation in contaminated water and soil were investigated. The biodegradation kinetics of BaP in contaminated water and the improvement of soil properties were determined. Results showed that critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the biosurfactant was 46.8 mg/L. The biosurfactant has a high pH stability in range of 3-9 and a strong salt stability in NaCl concentration range of 0-20%. At concentrations of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 CMC, the biosurfactant increased BaP water solubility by 1.4, 2.6, 4.0, 5.2 and 6.6 times. BaP biodegradation in contaminated water was effectively promoted by the biosurfactant, and the concentrations of BaP in sludge phase decreased to 1.015 mg/L (47.9% decrement) and 0.675 mg/L (65.4% decrement) when the dosed biosurfactant were 1 and 3 CMC, respectively. The biodegradation kinetics of BaP in contaminated water by the biosurfactant fitted well with the two-compartment kinetic model well (R² > 0.90). For the bioremediation of BaP contaminated soil, adding 0.1%-0.5% (w/w) biosurfactant biodegraded 39.2%-84.8% of BaP, while the control without biosurfactant was 24.2%. In addition, the application of the biosurfactant significantly improved the properties of the contaminated soil, behaved as the increase in microbial quantity, water holding capacity (WHC) and dehydrogenase (DH) activity of the soil. To sum up, the biosurfactant facilitated the BaP biodegradation and can be effectively used in in-site remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (BaP in this study) contaminated water and soil.

Biosurfactant-enhanced removal of o,p-dichlorobenzene from contaminated soil

Surfactant-enhanced remediation is less applicable for the treatment of dichlorobenzene (DCB)-contaminated soil. In this study, water solubility enhancements of o-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) and p-dichlorobenzene (p-DCB) by micellar solutions of biosurfactants (saponin, alkyl polyglycoside) and chemically synthetic surfactant (Tween 80) were measured and compared. Solubilities of o,p-DCB in water were greatly enhanced in a linear fashion by each of Tween 80, saponin, and alkyl polyglycoside. Solubility enhancement efficiencies of surfactants followed the order of Tween 80 > saponin > alkyl polyglycoside. However, the ex situ soil washing experiment demonstrated the opposite result. The removal efficiency of o,p-DCB by biosurfactant saponin and alkyl polyglycoside was higher than that of chemically synthetic surfactant Tween 80 in contaminated soil. This difference may be due to the different adsorption behaviors of the surfactants onto soil. In addition, elution kinetics for o,p-DCB were relatively fast, with apparent elution equilibrium reached within 360 min, and can be described by a pseudo first-order kinetic equation. The elution process of o,p-DCB in soil-aqueous systems obeyed four-parameter biphasic first-order kinetic model including rapid and slow phases. The results confirmed potential application of saponin and alkyl polyglycoside in elution solution for enhanced remediation of DCB-contaminated soil.

Immobilization of phenanthrene onto gemini surfactant modified sepiolite at solid/aqueous interface: Equilibrium, thermodynamic and kinetic studies

The immobilization of phenanthrene from aqueous phase onto natural and gemini surfactant modified sepiolite was investigated with respect to contact time, pH, ionic strength and temperature. The surface modification was examined through FT-IR characterization, SEM technique, and the thermogravimetric analysis. The maximum sorption capacity of phenanthrene on modified sepiolite was 95.15μgg^-1 with initial PHE concentration 1.0mgL^-1, temperature 293K, pH7, and ionic strength 1M. The corresponding PHE removal efficiency was higher than 95%. The Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models were applied to describe the phenanthrene sorption behavior and the Freundlich equation agreed well with the experimental data. The evaluation of the thermodynamic parameters indicated that the immobilization of phenanthrene onto gemini surfactant modified sepiolite was a spontaneous and exothermic process from 283 to 313K. The pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion models were used to evaluate the kinetic data. According to the calculated kinetic parameters, the immobilization process of phenanthrene followed the Elovich kinetic model with the highest correlation coefficients. The obtained results show that gemini surfactant modified sepiolite could be effectively utilized as one type of low-cost clay material to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from water effluents.

Transport of anionic azo dyes from aqueous solution to gemini surfactant-modified wheat bran: Synchrotron infrared, molecular interaction and adsorption studies

From the view of economic efficiency and technology sustainability, biomass adsorbent has a high potential for pollution control. In the present study, the performance of gemini 12-2-12 surfactant-modified wheat bran (MWB) for the removal of anionic azo dyes from aqueous solution was investigated. A new insight was gained into the modification mechanism through synchrotron-assisted infrared analysis and molecular interaction simulation. The equilibrium and kinetic studies for the adsorption of Acid Red 18 (AR-18), Acid Orange 7 (AO-7) and Acid Black 1 (AB-1) on MWB were conducted. The Langmuir model well fit the adsorption isotherm data. The adsorption kinetics could be described by the pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion models. The results of thermodynamic studies indicated the adsorption of AR-18 and AB-1 onto MWB was endothermic and spontaneous, while the adsorption of AO-7 was exothermic. The optimum pH for the adsorption of anionic azo dyes on MWB was 3. The adsorbed amount of anionic azo dyes onto MWB decreased when NaCl concentration increased from 0 to 0.4molL^-1. The potential of modified wheat bran as a suitable adsorbent for the removal of dyes from wastewater was presented in this study. The results can help understand the migration patterns of organic pollutants at wheat bran-water interface.

Surfactant flushing remediation of o-dichlorobenzene and p-dichlorobenzene contaminated soil

Surfactant-enhanced remediation is used to treat dichlorobenzene (DCB) contaminated soil. In this study, soil column experiments were conducted to investigate the removal efficiencies of o-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) and p-dichlorobenzene (p-DCB) from contaminated soil using micellar solutions of biosurfactants (saponin, alkyl polyglycoside) compare to a chemically synthetic surfactant (Tween 80). Leachate was collected and analyzed for o-DCB and p-DCB content. In addition, soil was analyzed to explore the effect of surfactants on soil enzyme activities. Results showed that the removal efficiency of o-DCB and p-DCB was highest for saponin followed by alkyl polyglycoside and Tween 80. The maximum o-DCB and p-DCB removal efficiencies of 76.34% and 80.43%, respectively, were achieved with 4 g L^-1 saponin solution. However, an opposite result was observed in the cumulative mass of o-DCB and p-DCB in leachate. The cumulative extent of o-DCB and p-DCB removal by the biosurfactants saponin and alkyl polyglycoside was lower than that of the chemically synthetic surfactant Tween 80 in leachate. Soil was also analyzed to explore the effect of surfactants on soil enzyme activities. The results indicated that surfactants were potentially effective in facilitating soil enzyme activities. Thus, it was confirmed that the biosurfactants saponin and alkyl polyglycoside could be used for remediation of o-DCB and p-DCB contaminated soil.

Surfactant-enhanced remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: A review

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic organic compounds that are widely present in the environment. The bioremediation of PAHs is an economical and environmentally friendly remediation technique, but it is limited because PAHs have low water solubility and fewer bioavailable properties. The solubility and bioavailability of PAHs can be increased by using surfactants to reduce surface tension and interfacial tension; this method is called surfactant-enhanced remediation (SER). The SER of PAHs is influenced by many factors such as the type and concentration of surfactants, PAH hydrophobicity, temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved organic matter and microbial community. Furthermore, as mixed micelles have a synergistic effect on PAH solubilisation, selecting the optimum ratio of mixed surfactants leads to effective PAH remediation. Although the use of surfactants inhibits microbial activities in some cases, this could be avoided by choosing an optimum combination of surfactants and a proper microbial community for the targeted PAH(s), resulting in up to 99.99% PAH removal. This article reviews the literature on SER of PAHs, including surfactant types, the synergistic effect of mixed micelles on PAH removal, the impact of surfactants on the PAH biodegradation process, factors affecting the SER process, and the mechanisms of surfactant-enhanced solubilisation of PAHs.

Effects of freeze-thawing cycles on desorption behaviors of PAH-contaminated soil in the presence of a biosurfactant: a case study in western Canada

Many regions in Canada are facing increasing environmental threats posed by oil and gas exploitation and transportation. These contaminated lands are inevitably subjected to seasonal and diurnal freeze-thawing cycles (FTCs). However, knowledge about the effect of FTCs on the behaviours of hydrophobic contaminants during the aging process of soil is limited. This study investigated the desorption characteristics of phenanthrene in aging soils in the presence of the biosurfactant rhamnolipid under diurnal and seasonal FTC treatments. It was found that the presence of rhamnolipid in soil during the aging process was able to increase the desorption efficiency of phenanthrene. In the presence of rhamnolipid above 100 mg L^-1, FTCs could inhibit the sequestration of phenanthrene. Soil moisture and rhamnolipid concentration are two major factors affecting this effect. High moisture content and FTC frequency could lead to lower desorption in the early stage of FTCs due to the increased specific surface area. The sequestration of phenanthrene was less effectively hindered under seasonal FTCs than diurnal FTCs. The results from this study have important implications for understanding the role of surfactants in cold-region soil aging, and for the improvement of site remediation strategies of PAH contaminated soil in cold regions.

Drivers and applications of integrated clean-up technologies for surfactant-enhanced remediation of environments contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)

Surfactant-enhanced remediation (SER) is considered as a promising and efficient remediation approach. This review summarizes and discusses main drivers on the application of SER in removing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from contaminated soil and water. The effect of PAH-PAH interactions on SER efficiency is, for the first time, illustrated in an SER review. Interactions between mixed PAHs could enhance, decrease, or have no impact on surfactants' solubilization power towards PAHs, thus affecting the optimal usage of surfactants for SER. Although SER can transfer PAHs from soil/non-aqueous phase liquids to the aqueous phase, the harmful impact of PAHs still exists. To decrease the level of PAHs in SER solutions, a series of SER-based integrated cleanup technologies have been developed including surfactant-enhanced bioremediation (SEBR), surfactant-enhanced phytoremediation (SEPR) and SER-advanced oxidation processes (SER-AOPs). In this review, the general considerations and corresponding applications of the integrated cleanup technologies are summarized and discussed. Compared with SER-AOPs, SEBR and SEPR need less operation cost, yet require more treatment time. To successfully achieve the field application of surfactant-based technologies, massive production of the cost-effective green surfactants (i.e. biosurfactants) and comprehensive evaluation of the drivers and the global cost of SER-based cleanup technologies need to be performed in the future.

Cosolubilization synergism occurrence in codesorption of PAH mixtures during surfactant-enhanced remediation of contaminated soil

Surfactant-enhanced remediation (SER) has been widely applied in decontaminating PAH-polluted soil. Most researches focus on evaluating washing efficiency without considering pollutants' mutual interaction. This study aims to investigate cosolubilization effect between phenanthrene (Phe) and pyrene (Pyr) in nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 (TX100) solution on their codesorption performance from soil. Cosolubilization experiment showed that, when cosolubilized, solubility of Phe and Pyr in TX100 increased by 15.38% and 18.19%, respectively, as quantified by the deviation ratio of molar solubilization ratio in single and binary solute solubilization systems. The synergism may be due to the enlarged micelle volume caused by PAHs solubilized in the shell region of the micelle. The cosolubilization effect was further observed in the soil washing process. The strengthened TX100 solubilization capacity towards Phe and Pyr could increase the two PAHs' codesorption efficiency from soil, accompanied by synergistic extent of 6-15%. However, synergism in codesorption was weaker than that observed in the cosolubilization system, which may be related to surfactant loss to soil and PAH partition into soil organic matter and the sorbed surfactants. The improved remediation performance during codesorption of mixed PAHs implies the significance of combining PAHs' mutual interaction into evaluating SER, which may reduce the surfactant washing concentration and save remediation cost.

Enhancement of soil retention for phenanthrene in binary cationic gemini and nonionic surfactant mixtures: characterizing two-step adsorption and partition processes through experimental and modeling approaches

The enhancement of soil retention for phenanthrene (PHE) through the addition of a binary mixture of cationic gemini (12-2-12) and nonionic surfactants (C12E10) was investigated. The maximum apparent sorption coefficient Kd(*) reached 4247.8 mL/g through the addition of mixed 12-2-12 gemini and C12E10 surfactants, which was markedly higher than the summed individual results in the presence of individual 12-2-12 gemini (1148.6 mL/g) or C12E10 (210.0 mL/g) surfactant. However, the sorption of 12-2-12 gemini was inhibited by the increasing C12E10 dose; and a higher initial 12-2-12 gemini dose showed a higher "desorption" rate. The present study also addressed the sorption behavior of the single 12-2-12 gemini surfactant at the soil/aqueous interface. The sorption isotherm was divided into two steps to elucidate the sorption process; and the sorption schematics were proposed to elaborate the growth of surfactant aggregates corresponding to the various steps of the sorption isotherm. Finally, a two-step adsorption and partition model (TAPM) was developed to simulate the sorption process. Analysis of the equilibrium data indicated that the sorption isotherms of 12-2-12 gemini fitted the TAPM model better. Thermodynamic calculations confirmed that the 12-2-12 gemini sorption at the soil/aqueous interface was spontaneous and exothermic from 288 to 308K.

Studies of membrane fouling mechanisms involved in the micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration using blocking models

Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) is a promising technology to remove organic contaminants from wastewater.
