Impacts of epichlorohydrin-dimethylamine on coagulation performance and membrane fouling in coagulation/ultrafiltration combined process with different Al-based coagulants

Co-coagulation of micro-nano bubbles (MNBs) for enhanced drinking water treatment: A study on the efficiency and mechanism of a novel cleaning process

MNBs (Micro-nano bubbles) are widely used in cleaning processes for environmental treatments, but few studies have examined the interaction of MNBs with coagulation. In this study, a novel process, i.e., MNBs-coagulation, was developed for enhanced drinking water treatment. The humic acid (HA) removal efficiency was used to evaluate the effectiveness of MNBs-coagulation for drinking water treatment. The hydrolysis component ratio of polymeric aluminum chloride (PACl) with and without MNBs, the complexation strength of HA and PACl, and flocculent functional group characterization were used to analyze the mechanism of the MNBs-coagulation process to enhance drinking water treatment. The results of a Jar test showed that the MNBs-coagulation process could improve the removal efficiency of HA (up to a 27.9% increase in DOC removal). In continuous-flow experiments to remove HA, MNBs-coagulation can increase the removal efficiency of UV₂₅₄ by about 26.5% and with no significant change in turbidity. These results are attributed to the inherent hydroxyl radical generating properties of MNBs, the forced hydrolysis of PACl by MNBs to increase the Al_c percentage, and the ability of MNBs to increase the complexation strength of HA with PACl. At the same time, the MNBs-coagulation process has a strong anti-interference ability, almost no interference from anions and cations such as Cl^-, SO₄^2- and Ca²⁺, and has a good performance in natural surface water. In summary, MNBs-coagulation has strong potential for practical applications to enhance the efficiency of drinking water treatment.

Regulated-biofilms enhance the permeate flux and quality of gravity-driven membrane (GDM) by in situ coagulation combined with activated alumina filtration

It is a critical challenge for drinking water production when treating algae-contaminated surface water. In this study, the impact of in situ coagulation (C), activated alumina filtration (AA) and their combination (CAA) on the performance of gravity-driven membrane (GDM) was systematically assessed during 105-day operation. The results indicated that pretreatments in particular CAA could effectively enhance GDM flux, and the stable fluxes were increased to 3.1, 4.9 and 8.3 L/(m2·h) (LMH) for CGDM, AA/GDM and CAA/GDM, respectively when compared to the control GDM (2.0 LMH). Coagulation was beneficial to formation of thick but loose biofouling layer, while AA filtration was effective to retain foulants including extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), organics, total nitrogen and total phosphorus. The CAA/GDM could mostly remove these foulants, and facilitate the proliferation of bacterial genera that could consume EPS, further alleviating membrane fouling. The difference in loosely bound EPS and tightly bound EPS of biofouling layer attributed to the difference of reversible fouling and irreversible fouling, respectively. Morphological observations, variation in functional groups or elements further confirmed the difference in biological layers in different GDM systems. The occurrence of specific bacterial genera involving the potential to degrade protein, chitin and other high molecular weight organics was responsible for contaminant removals.

Algae-Laden Fouling Control by Gravity-Driven Membrane Ultrafiltration with Aluminum Sulfate-Chitosan: The Property of Floc and Cake Layer

Gravity-driven membrane (GDM) ultrafiltration is a promising water treatment method due to its low energy consumption and low maintenance. However, the low stable permeability in algae-laden water treatment is currently limiting its wider application. With the ultimate goal of increasing permeability, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a composite coagulant of aluminum sulfate-chitosan (AS-CS) on the GDM filtration performance. In parallel tests with a single AS coagulant and without pre-coagulation, the analysis of membrane fouling resistance and the membrane fouling mechanism were evaluated. The results indicated that the AS-CS/GDM system can alleviate 23.74% and 58.80% membrane fouling, respectively, compared with AS/GDM and the GDM system. The AS-CS/GDM system can effectively remove humic-like substances having a molecular weight (MW) of 3–100 kDa, resulting in removal of 98.32% of algae cells and removal of 66.25% of dissolved organic carbon; the AS-CS/GDM system thereby improved the concentration of attached biomass on the membrane surface with the stronger biodegradability of organic matters. The application of AS-CS pre-coagulation in the GDM process could enhance the proliferation of microorganisms and the removal of low molecular weight humic-like substances. Therefore, the AS-CS/GDM system is a potentially important approach for algae-laden water treatment.

Optimized coagulation pretreatment alleviates ultrafiltration membrane fouling: The role of floc properties and slow-mixing speed on mechanisms of chitosan-assisted coagulation

To alleviate ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fouling, the pre-coagulation of poly-aluminum chloride (PACl) with the aid of chitosan (CTS) was conducted for synthetic humic acid-kaolin water treatment. Pre-coagulation of three molecular weights (MW) CTSs (50-190 kDa (CTS_L), 190-310 kDa (CTS_M) and 310-375 kDa (CTS_H)) was optimized with slow-mixing speeds of 30, 60 and 90 r/min, respectively. The removal efficiency and floc properties as well as membrane fouling were analyzed, and were compared to results obtained by conventional coagulation with PACl. Results showed that variations in floc properties could be ascribed to the coagulation mechanisms of CTS_L/CTS_M/CTS_H at different slow-mixing speeds, resulting in reduced UF membrane fouling. Specifically, at the low speed of 30 r/min, all three CTS types produced flocs with similar properties, while CTS_L resulted in the lowest removal efficiency and aggravated irreversible fouling. At the appropriate speed of 60 r/min, CTS_M generated the most compact flocs with the combined effects of bridging and path mechanisms. The compact cake layer formed could alleviate irreversible fouling, which was beneficial for prolonging the operation of the UF membrane. At the high speed of 90 r/min, CTS_H formed fragile flocs and aggravated irreversible membrane fouling. We considered membrane fouling to be affected by floc properties and the resultant removal efficiency, which was governed by the MW of the CTS used and the slow-mixing speed applied as well.

Effects of papermaking sludge-based polymer on coagulation behavior in the disperse and reactive dyes wastewater treatment

In this study, papermaking sludge was used as the raw biomass material to produce the lignin-based flocculant (LBF) by grafting quaternary ammonium groups and acrylamide. LBF was used as a coagulant aid with polyaluminum chloride (PAC) to treat reactive and disperse dyes wastewater. Effects of dosing method, pH, hardness and stirring speed on the coagulation behavior and floc properties were studied. Results showed that the superior coagulation efficiency and recovery factor were achieved by PAC+LBF compared with PAC and LBF+PAC. The primary mechanisms of LBF in the treatment of disperse and reactive dye solutions were charge neutralization and bridging effect, respectively. In the dual-coagulation, the impact of pH on the coagulation efficiency was weak during pH range of 5-9. Moderate hardness could enhance the floc properties due to the decrease of electrostatic repulsion and the chelation of Ca(II) and LBF. Besides, flocs coagulated by PAC+LBF had a stronger anti-crush ability.
