A comparison between flow-through cathode and mixed tank cells for the electro-Fenton process with conductive diamond anode

Toward decentralized wastewater treatment: A flow-through module using microtubular gas diffusion electrodes for micropollutants removal

Electro-Fenton (EF) represents an eco-friendly and cost-effective advanced oxidation process that can remove highly persistent and hazardous pharmaceuticals, e.g., contrast media agents, from water bodies. However, up to date, EF modules incorporate a planar carbonaceous gas diffusion electrode (GDE) cathode containing fluorinated compounds as polymeric binders. Here, we introduce a novel flow-through module that deploys freestanding carbon microtubes (CMT) as microtubular GDEs, omitting any risks of secondary pollution by highly-persistent fluorinated compounds (e.g., Nafion). The flow-through module was characterized for electrochemical hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) generation and micropollutant removal via EF. H₂O₂ electro-generation experiments illustrated high production rates (1.1 ± 0.1-2.7 ± 0.1 mg cm^-2 h^-1) at an applied cathodic potential of - 0.6 V vs. SHE, depending on the porosity of CMTs. Diatrizoate (DTZ), as the model pollutant, with a high initial concentration of 100 mg L^-1 was successfully oxidized (95-100 %), reaching mineralization (TOC-total organic carbon removal) efficiencies up to 69 %. Additionally, Electro-adsorption experiments demonstrated the capability of positively charged CMTs to remove negatively charged DTZ with a capacity of 11 mg g^-1 from a 10 mg L^-1 DTZ solution. These results reveal the potential of the as-designed module to serve as an oxidation unit coupled with other separation techniques, e.g., electro-adsorption or membrane processes.

Three-dimensional structured electrode for electrocatalytic organic wastewater purification: Design, mechanism and role

Considering the growing need in decentralized water treatment, the application of electrocatalytic processes (EP) to achieve organic wastewater purification will be dominant in the near future due to high efficiency, small reactor assembly as well as the flexibility of operation and management. The catalytic performance of electrode materials determines the development of this technology. Among them, the unique three-dimensional (3D) structure electrode shows better performance than two-dimensional (2D) electrode in increasing mass transfer, enhancing adsorption and exposing more active sites. Hence, this review starts with the introduction of definition, classification, advantages and disadvantages of 3D electrode materials. Then a critical discussion on the design and construction of 3D electrode materials for organic wastewater purification application is provided. Next, the removal mechanism of organic pollutants on the surface of 3D electrode, the role of 3D structure, the design of reactor with 3D electrode, the conversion and toxicity of degradation products, electrode energy efficiency, stability and cost, are comprehensively reviewed. At last, current challenges and future perspectives for the development of 3D electrode materials are addressed. We deem that this review will provide a valuable insight into the design and application of 3D electrodes in environmental water purification.

Degradation of antibiotics, organic matters and ammonia during secondary wastewater treatment using boron-doped diamond electro-oxidation combined with ceramic ultrafiltration

In this study, a BDD electrolytic oxidation-ceramic membrane ultrafiltration (EO-CM) system for the removals of antibiotics, organic matters and ammonia in wastewater was evaluated. Sulfamethazine (SMZ) was degraded following a pseudo first-order kinetics. The removal rate of SMZ improved with the increase of electro-oxidation time (0-60 min) and current density (5-30 mA/cm²). During the BDD electro-oxidation process, H₂O₂ and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were generated which were detected by N, N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPD) method and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR), respectively. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) was able to be removed by EO and CM processes, in which proteins and humic acids were regarded as the main removed components measured using excitation-emission matrix (EEM) technique. Moreover, BDD electro-oxidation pretreatment could make the CM process maintain a high water flux and significantly control the membrane fouling and relieve transmembrane pollution. In addition, the removal of ammonia was enhanced with the increase of chloride ions (Cl^-) in wastewater during EO process due to the generation of active chlorine (i.e., ClO^-, HClO, or Cl₂) from the oxidation of Cl^-. Chloramine and nitrogen were produced in the oxidation of ammonia by active chlorine. Overall, the results of this study suggest that BDD EO-CM system is a promising process for removing antibiotics, organic matters and ammonia.
